Concord promotes Co-AD/Women’s Soccer HC Luke Duffy to be the Mountain Lions’ full-time AD, while stepping away from coaching. President Bethany Meighen: “Concord is grateful to both Luke Duffy and Tesla Southcott for coaching and serving as co-ADs when Kevin Garrett retired. Moving to one AD will streamline leadership responsibilities and allow athletics to move from a period of transition towards a focused future of growth. … Coach Duffy has built an outstanding coaching career at Concord, and his decision to step into the full-time athletic director role is a powerful example of leadership and service. NCAA SVP of Championships Lynda Tealer joined College.town’s Daniel Gillman at the NCAA Convention to discuss the impact of the NCAA’s restructured governance model, noting that sport oversight committees now manage both championship operations and regulatory policy. Tealer: “The goal really is that a particular sport oversight committee can take a step back, not just run a championship, though that's a heavy lift, but what are the things that impact the sport, they can really sort of be the steward for that particular sport at the collegiate level on a national scale. And it's empowered these folks to really take broad looks at the health of particular sports.” As for the growth of emerging sports for women: “I think for each of those emerging sports, they can point back to when women's volleyball or soccer or softball. Softball probably has sort of the newest tenure where it started and where it's ended up. I think every sport that comes online can see that trajectory and feel like, you know what, our sport can achieve that as well. We can get it in the high school, so we can get it in the club level. We can grow it at the collegiate level and then have this whole ecosystem around this sport. So, adding a sport is both sort of a recognition of work that's already been done, but also this really cool opportunity to create a whole new trajectory, a whole new fan base and excitement and bring something new to the table.” (link)

Wisconsin-Parkside AD Adam Schemm joins the NACMA Timeout Podcast with Fairfield (DI) AVP/Deputy AD Zach Dayton to dive into a number of topics. On revenue generation, Schemm notes facility rentals are the biggest revenue generator for athletics. On roster management and growth of enrollment through athletics, Schemm states Parkside had some room to grow in some sports, with cross country and track & field in the process of growing from 80 to 120 student-athletes. On his leadership growth in the chair after three years leading the Rangers: “I ultimately did it by figuring out this is who I am, this is who I believe in, and I got comfortable with myself on leading the way I'm at while still working to making sure that I'm curious and continued working to making sure that I'm growing as a leader. … I had a mentor once tell me, especially as I was transitioning from the senior associate role to the number one chair, ‘You've got to remind yourself you don't need to be at everything. You only have a certain amount of time and a certain amount of energy to be able to do that; focus on where you can make the greatest impact.’” (link)

Bama247’s Alex Scarborough profiles Susan Peal, the retired NCAA Director of Governance and Policy who architected the transfer portal following a 2017 proposal to shift from a "request-to-transfer" to a "notification-of-transfer" model. Peal, now an adjunct professor at The Citadel (DI), defends the portal as a success for its intended purpose—streamlining compliance workflows that were previously bogged down by manual emails and tracer forms—and believes that public ire is misplaced. What’s changed are policy shifts like the one-time transfer exception, COVID eligibility extensions and, most notably, NIL: "It's interesting because when you look at reasons why student-athletes transferred, it generally fell into the categories of: I'm not getting playing time. I'm not a right fit in this system or with this coach, academic reasons. If you look at now — in those revenue sports — what's the number one reason? A better NIL deal. So everything's changed. And, again, that's not because of the transfer portal. That's because of the transfer rules changing and then name, image and likeness coming into play." Therefore, she adds: "Screaming at the transfer portal is like screaming at a traffic intersection. It doesn't dictate the rules of the road." (link)
