Charlotte expects to name its new AD by early March, per the Charlotte Business Journal’s Erik Spanberg. Chancellor Sharon Gaber is leading the four-person search committee consisting of Board of Trustees Chair/Truist Chief Consumer and Small Business Banking Officer Dontá Wilson, Northwood Ravin CEO David Ravin and Assoc. AD for Governance and Regulatory Affairs Katie Renaut. When asked about the importance of candidates’ business credentials, she said, “Somebody who has experience generating new revenue is exciting to me.” TurnkeyZRG will be paid $75K for assisting in the search process. New Oklahoma AD Roger Denny “checked nearly every box OU believed mattered most in college athletics’ current moment,” per The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley, who notes Denny’s non-traditional path quickly caught the attention of OU President Joseph Harroz, who tells Sulley: “Five minutes in, I was thinking, ‘Here we are talking to a Deputy AD. This seems anathema to the direction we were going.’ The next 2 hours and 55 minutes, I was just captured. … He has four and a half years of deeper operational experience. He was directly assigned to be in charge of football. You've seen what they've done at Illinois, but he has his broader context. As I look at that legal background, as I look at that training, he speaks with knowledge of how to deploy it and employ it. Given my legal background, I know a decent amount. But when Roger’s in the room, I am learning.” Denny: “The buzzword around our industry is alignment, right? Everyone talks about alignment, top to bottom, this and that. What I would tell you about Oklahoma is it's not just alignment. It is absolute commitment to excellence and winning, and not just winning, but winning championships.” Harroz: “I can’t wait to get the guy here. When you look at this environment and all that college athletics means and what it means to Oklahoma, this guy’s a weapon.” More. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White isn’t optimistic about what he’s seeing in college sports and feels only collective bargaining, which he’s long advocated for, can improve the situation. White: “I would say it’s gotten worse and that might be a necessary evil because what I’m seeing and I’m hopeful of is more people are opening their eyes to something that our Chancellor [Donde Plowman] and I have been saying for about four years now, which is there’s only two solutions to this problem. It’s Congress changing the laws of our country, or us accepting what the antitrust law says. There is a construct in that legal environment that exists today that the NBA and the NFL are structured on, and that’s called collective bargaining. I think that there’s a way to do that in higher education that makes sense. I think we can actually have stronger connection to academics than what we have right now. I think we can slow down just the frequency of transfers…. Obviously the fan affinity, fans I think would appreciate a little more stability in that space. A lot of the players would appreciate more stability in that space. Players value leadership and continuity in the locker room. In my conversations with leaders of our teams and nationally, I think people would be surprised to hear that a lot of the things we as fans, as administrators, as coaches want, the players want, too. They want their piece of the pie. The revenue has gotten so significant, and they deserve a piece of the pie. We’ve got to organize it, though, and I think the way to do that is through collective bargaining.” Lots more. (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee's success in hiring football and basketball coaches stands out not just for the choices she’s made but for her ability to sell VU to candidates without having much tangible to sell, according to The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode. Lee: “Both sides are taking a leap of faith, right? … Everyone understood what Vanderbilt was — which was not all bad, by the way — but also had this zeal and enthusiasm for what it could be. I have that spark, but I’m looking for that spark in their eyes, and I saw it in all three.” Commodores Men’s Basketball HC Mark Byington: “First of all, I think like-minded people are attracted to each other, and I think that was part of the process with all three of us. Candice talked about wanting this to be a new age of Vanderbilt athletics, and you could tell this wasn’t just some rehearsed thing she says from one candidate to the other.” VU Football HC Clark Lea: “Candice understands people. She has incredible instincts when it comes to the human aspects of leadership.” Vandy Women’s Basketball HC Shea Ralph: “I’ve never told Candice this, but I was sold on Vanderbilt after 10 minutes talking to her. My husband knew her well, and he’s like, ‘This lady is going to do something special.’ … When it comes down to it, what Candice does is hire great human beings.” (link)

“Regardless how we slice this thing, it’s got to get better.” That’s Rutgers AD Keli Zinn discussing the Scarlet Knights’ FY25 athletics financial report that showed the department’s deficit above $70M for the third time in five years at $78M, bringing Rutgers’ athletics deficit to $516.9M since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15. Overall, RU registered $193.8M in expenses against $146.6M in total operating revenues. Zinn: “You could make the argument that we do not have an expense problem. But we do in fact have a revenue problem and a pretty significant one. … Obviously our expenses have exceeded and outpaced our revenue and in some cases year over year to a pretty significant degree. That’s a piece that we will spend quite a bit of time on, understanding that the current fiscal year that we sit in there was a $20.5M expense with the revenue sharing (for athletes) and the additional scholarship support. … I think what you’ll see a year from now is that’s going to be our worst year looking at a profit and loss scenario. But you’ll see some level of improvement that’s expected in that ‘26-‘27 year and then by ’27-’28, based upon the current projections we have, in some growth categories and opportunities with revenue, I’m hopeful you’ll actually see (the deficit) start to decline.” More. Oregon reported significant increases in both FY25 revenue ($185.4M) and expenses ($182.7M), per The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke, who notes UO witnessed gains of 9.6% and 9.3% YoY from FY24, respectively. The lone sport to generate revenue was football with a net total of $58.8M from $119.6M in total revenue, offset by $60.8M in expenses. All other Duck sports operated at a loss, including men’s basketball at a more than $2.4M net loss, while men’s and women’s track and field lost more than $6M. Oregon spent $41.6M on coaching salaries, benefits and bonuses in FY25, a more than $3.5M increase over the previous fiscal year. Support staff and administrative employees made $31.6M, up nearly $4M from FY24. Team travel also grew in cost, as expected in navigating road trips in the Big Ten: $10.9M in FY25 compared to $8.7M in FY24. More including the full FY25 financial report. (link)

FBS athletic departments have inked more than 60 deals since the NCAA ended its ban on “commercial sponsor advertisements on football fields for regular-season games” back in 2024, per SBJ’s David Broughton, who notes the SEC boasted the highest percentage of schools playing on a field with at least one sponsor logo for at least one game last year at 87.5% (only Texas A&M and Mississippi State didn’t have one). Overall, Learfield has signed 23 multi-year deals over the 19 months the assets have been sellable, by far the most of any multimedia rights partner with expectations that figure will double by summer of 2027. Navigate estimates the maximum exposure value that brands aligned with both SEC and Big Ten programs can generate is north of $3M, at $3.2M and $3.6M, respectively, while the ACC ($981.7K) and Big 12 ($735.6K) lag further behind. Navigate Senior Analyst Kellen Foster: “Brands that invest with Group of Five institutions are likely motivated less by the mass visibility of on-field exposure and more by qualitative outcomes — community engagement, local goodwill and visible support for the university.” More. NCAA Managing Director of Enterprise Risk Management Clint Hangebrauck joined College.town’s Daniel Gillman at the NCAA Convention to discuss several topics, including the association's evolving strategy regarding sports betting. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Hangebrauck highlighted the six-month-old partnership with Venmo deployed during major events like the College Football Playoff and March Madness to prevent student-athletes from receiving unsolicited payment requests from angry bettors. "We really came to Venmo because we heard heightened concerns from student-athletes, from schools, around angry betterers using their platform to reach out to student-athletes, request money, harass athletes. ... We have really like heightened digital security efforts that Venmo's put in place where, unfortunately, if you have those big moments that happen, whether it's in the [CFP] or March Madness, they could essentially put almost like a digital shield around athletes that prevents them from getting unsolicited payment requests after some of those big moments happen."
➤ While the NCAA continues petitioning state gaming commissions to eliminate risky prop bets (specifically on unders), Hangebrauck noted the growing challenge of monitoring "offshoots" like social betting apps (Fliff) and prediction markets.
➤ Hangebrauck notes that more than 50K student-athletes have completed the NCAA's free sports betting e-learning module to date. Full Q&A. (link)

Boston College AD Blake James projects a distribution cap of $21.3M for the upcoming year with 75% allocated to football, 15% to men's basketball, and 5% to women's basketball. While the internal revenue share is maxed, James admitted the program trails top peers like Indiana in "third-party NIL" deals, emphasizing the need to grow that external bucket via partners like Van Wagner. More from James…
➤ On the gap in third-party NIL: "If people are wondering what's the big difference between Boston College and we'll use the national champions Indiana. It's not going to be our revshare number. ... It's the third party NIL that we have to continue to look at. You know, we've talked with our multimedia rights partner Van Wagner about that and we're looking at other ways that we can really assist in getting that going."
➤ James also pointed to endowment funding as crucial for the Eagles: "I think there's already seven gifts of $250K or more that are being finalized... We need to fund that program to remain competitive. ... We get about $10M, a little over $10M a year right now from endowment for scholarship support, which is great, but it's a number we need to increase because my scholarship bill, I joke I'm the largest parent on campus, is well over $30M right now."
➤ On the flaws in the current football calendar: "I think we have to continue to look at how the calendar works and what makes sense recognizing the importance of the academic side of a college student-athletes experience. ... I don't know that the timing right now is ideal. ... Do you go away from spring ball and have more days in the in the summer and you give, you know, take those 15 days of practice that coaches have had historically in the spring and move those to 15 days now that maybe they have in June before, you know, before camp gets going and you do a portal in in line with the end of the school year." More from Clemson AD Graham Neff on the tampering allegations against Ole Miss involving student-athlete Luke Ferrelli, as Neff remarked on Friday: “The NCAA was surprised that a school was willing to come forward as directly and as transparently as we have. Normally, there are a lot of complaints in the media, hearsay amongst the industry, etc. Very little actually gets reported. That is coming from the NCAA directly. We are very eager to support them in the process and in the determination of the rules and go from there.” Also of note: “A lot of my colleagues across the country are starting to say that we are at a critical juncture of college athletics and have started to come forward more and more with a voice and perspective and I wanted to really encourage and extend that here today. … It is easy to point fingers. It is easy to lecture others about doing things the right way and playing by the rules and then move on to the next competitive pressure. There are a lot of those in college sports. But what is hard to do is roll up your sleeves, acting in ways that are consistent with your values and your ethics, so we are here today to add voice and perspective to that end.” (link)

William & Mary AD Brian Mann joins Collegiate Sports Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz on the latest edition of The Career Hustle to reflect on his tenure thus far and offer insight into the process of hiring coaches and staff, establishing rapport with a chancellor or president, supporting the growth of non-revenue sports, plus more. Here are the takeaways:
➤ How does he evaluate head coaching candidates? "I’ve found I'm drawn to a particular type of head coach, which is somebody who's got a really engaging, kind, warm personality on the outside and is a tough son of a gun right below the surface and is a competitive person right below the surface. That combination works really well with me. I think it works really well with the student athletes that are drawn to William & Mary."
➤ On building alignment with the university president: "I think the most important thing you can do is try your best to understand what matters the most to the president, not necessarily as it relates to athletics, but what matters the most to the president as it relates to her role for the entire university."
➤ Advice for first-time ADs: "Find somebody who you can trust to close the door to give you hard truths and feedback. Take it. Take it well. Understand it. And put those people around you as quickly as you can because they're critical to your success.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

CBS’ Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz report that Duke and QB “Darian Mensah's camp continue to be in contact, and are working to try and find a resolution outside of court that would allow Mensah to transfer to another school.” The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson adds: “There are ongoing discussions but UM is not involved in those negotiations, a source said. The hope, from a UM standpoint, is that Duke and Mensah can reach a financial settlement before a judge ruling on Thursday. Admission to spring classes closed at UM last week, but I suspect there will be a way to get Mensah enrolled at Miami this month. He hopes to get clearance to enroll at UM ASAP – he doesn't have permission legally to do that yet.” (link, link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders has implemented a strict fine schedule for the 2026 season, levying penalties of up to $5K for social media misconduct and up to $2,500 for missing practice, workouts, treatment or film sessions, acknowledging that players are "legally making more money than at any previous point." With a roster featuring at least 42 incoming transfers, Sanders has also banned athletes from wearing gear from previous schools inside the facility and issued stern warnings regarding profanity and conduct toward women in the program. Sanders to the team: "The profanity needs to stop. I heard it myself in the dining area. It needs to stop. And make sure that we respect our women. If you get out of pocket and calling our women by their first name, that's a problem with me." (link)

South Dakota State Football HC Dan Jackson points out that while much of the conversation focuses on NIL, the Jackrabbits are still trying to add more scholarships beyond the 63 they currently offer, “and that’s a significant chunk of money.” Ultimately, Jackson looks at all of it through the lens of having a “personnel department” with scholarships, Alston money and NIL money all taken together, “then you put together the best packages you can to build the best team.” Hero Sports’ Sam Herder reacts: “A good reminder that while many of us wonder how much FCS schools are paying players (NIL, rev share, cost of attendance, Alston, etc.), it’s also important to note that FCS schools can now go above 63 scholarships if they opt into the House settlement (unless a conference sets a cap). Some schools may find it easier to fundraise for more scholarship dollars than NIL dollars.” (link)

SBJ’s Austin Karp weighs in on an X conversation between ESPN SVP of Research Flora Kelly and Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill about TV viewership differences among the Big Ten and SEC: “Truth is Big Ten numbers on measured networks lagged even ACC at many times this season. Growth of Indiana+USC/Oregon additions are vital to B1G not being top heavy.” (link)
