Northern Arizona AD Uri Farkas will step down after being promoted to the permanent post last June. Farkas: “I will always be a strong advocate and supporter of Lumberjack Athletics and Northern Arizona University. At this time, I need to step away and focus on my physical and mental health, as well as the overall well-being of my family. They have been my number one supporters, and I look forward to spending more time with them as I explore my next opportunity.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports the guaranteed Group of 6 representative in the College Football Playoff does not have to be a conference champion, according to the MOU signed by all leagues and Notre Dame in 2024. Vannini adds those then-G5 leaders “were largely focused on securing a guaranteed spot in the field for 2026 and beyond and pushing back on the financial changes.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair appears on the Eric Chase podcast to touch on a wide range of topics concerning the university's athletic department and the broader community. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On the current state of the transfer portal: “We need friction in the system on the transfer portal. I don't mind the NIL. I really don't. If we want to pay players, so be it, call it good. It is what it is. The transfer portal to me gives me more heartburn because I think we need some friction that says, ‘Hey, maybe you transferred once, but after that you got a city here. I thought that was a healthy place to be.’ I think now as it is, you can just zigzag your way to four or five different institutions. It's not good. It also reinforces negative lessons to our young people. And I actually think this starts before college. I think AAUs and kids shop in high schools to figure out where they're going to play. We're not taught to fight through adversity or push through adversity. And so we've got to get a better spot there. I think employment people say, ‘well, you as AD could hop to another school.’ Yeah, but there's a buyout and there's language in my contract that restricts when and where I can go and what penalties would have to be paid.”
➤ On getting more out of Glass Bowl Stadium: “You look around the country and you see everything from dirt bikes to bull riding and rodeos to hockey to literally anything and everything when you've got a massive surface and you've got stands that [are] built to host events. How do we think about the Glass Bowl as an event center structure versus a football stadium? I think that mindset shift is something we've all got to undergo and say, ‘Hey, you can do a lot more in here.’ And people say, ‘Oh, well, if you do rodeo, well, what does that mean for the turf?’ Well, everybody else has figured it out. … What does it look like to have an outdoor boxing match in the center of the Glass Bowl or MMA, right? It's the rage right now. What does it look like to put a cage in the heart of the stadium? And certainly the weather can play a component, but when you hit it right on the right day, and you’ve got tailgating before and after and what that builds into a full day on campus, all those are possibilities. … I mean, the sky's the limit in terms of what we can host in that facility. And again, it's built to host big time events. We’ve just got to activate it more.” (link)

Duke has announced a settlement of its NIL contract dispute with Blue Devils student-athlete Darian Mensah “that enables both parties to move forward,” with Mensah now free to enroll and play at another school (expected to be Miami). The school acknowledged that pursuing legal action against Mensah was “a difficult choice” and something it sought to resolve “fairly and quickly.” (link, link)

The NCAA has confirmed it’s looking into allegations made by Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney accusing Ole Miss Football HC Pete Golding of “blatant” tampering with now-former Tigers student-athlete Luke Ferrelli, per The Athletic’s Grace Raynor, who notes the association has been in direct contract with Clemson over the allegations. “Though the NCAA would not comment on the exact documents it has received from Clemson, Swinney quoted text messages and laid out a minute-by-minute timeline in his news conference last week.” Swinney also believes the NCAA’s investigation shouldn’t take much time to reach a judgment, remarking: “This shouldn’t be a three-year or a three-month investigation. This might take three days. (Ole Miss is) either gonna tell the truth or they’re gonna lie. … All you’ve gotta do is get the phone.” More. (link)

Wichita State has cut five total positions across coaching, administrative and academic support, per The Wichita Eagle’s Taylor Eldridge, who notes the decision comes after President Richard Muma warned the campus last week to “brace for a 7% budget reduction next fiscal year.” The cuts are also part of a broader cost-cutting measure driven by House settlement-related financial pressures. Noting he couldn’t discuss specific personnel matters, Wichita State AD Kevin Saal remarked: “This is a critical moment for the industry. WSU Athletics, like most athletic departments across the country, is evaluating how to best structure and right-size our operations to remain competitive in Division I. It demands strategic and responsible management to protect the developmental experience of our student-athletes and to ensure the long-term health and viability of WSU Athletics.” (link)

College football officials plan to review potential changes to the targeting rule this offseason, such as to the disqualification punishment, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes there will be no “backing up” on the rule since “it has been successful in its goal of making the game safer by changing player behavior related to head collisions.” Since the “height of targeting fouls” in 2020, there’s been an annual decrease, moving from a targeting penalty once in every four games in 2020 to one in every seven to eight games this past season. NCAA Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw: “What targeting has driven in terms of player behavior change has been really good and the numbers reflect that. But how can we continue this trend of taking out more of these hits we don’t want in the game while being less punitive?” Dellenger: “When exploring the penalty structure this offseason, officials must determine if the disqualification — and the carryover disqualification — is still warranted. Could rules officials create two different levels of targeting fouls, similar to flagrant fouls in basketball?” In other rule-related news, Shaw observed “there’s not a medical player-safety driver to push us to change the kickoff,” and the new rule intended to prevent feigning injuries made the issue a “non-story” throughout the 2025 season. Royal Palm Invitational promoter/former Louisville Senior Assoc. AD for Development Mark Jurich describes his proposed college basketball MTE in Dubai as in “an active development phase,” per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes the new event was reported to be debuting in November of 2026. Jurich: “We have had formal discussions with multiple Division I programs, with contracts and letters of intent currently in circulation. On the commercial side, we are in advanced conversations with prospective sponsors, and discussions are ongoing regarding venue logistics and event operations in Dubai.” Libit: “According to the Dec. 3 email, the event will feature six teams who would play double-headers over the course of three days. Jurich wrote that there was already either ‘strong interest’ or ‘contracts in motion’ with Illinois, TCU, Wake Forest and Memphis. However, spokespeople for Illinois and TCU confirmed this week that their schools would not be participating, with TCU having recently announced it would be part of next season’s Players Era Championship instead. Representatives for Wake Forest and Memphis did not respond to requests for comment.” More. (link)

New Mexico turned The Pit into a time capsule on Saturday night for 90s Retro Night, a massive cross-departmental activation that saw Lobos men's basketball secure its 23rd straight home win -- the fifth-longest active streak in the nation. Led by Interim VP/AD Ryan Berryman and Sr. Associate A.D. for External Relations Kasey Byers, the experience featured a meticulous 90s-themed living room set for fan photos, exclusive retro merchandise, and a total uniform redesign. The night served as a masterclass in venue-wide storytelling, utilizing the entire marketing and event staff to create an authentic "retro" environment that extended from the social media rollout to the game-day script. Key takeaways include:
➤ Merchandise as an Event: By creating exclusive, limited-run retro gear, the Lobos turned the Lobo Den into a "must-visit" destination, with gates opening early to accommodate high fan demand.
➤ Asset Utilization: The department treated the concourse as a content studio, leveraging a custom "90s living room" set to drive thousands of organic social impressions from attending fans.
➤ Identity-Driven Design: Every detail of the uniform rollout was carefully managed to ensure the program honored its historical roots while simultaneously engaging modern boosters and partners.

UC San Diego agreed to terms with new AD Andy Fee on a contract running through June 30, 2030, with a first-year base salary of $340K, according to CollegeAD. The deal includes a $100K signing bonus and 4% annual salary increases. Fee would owe a buyout of one year's salary plus $200K if he leaves before June 30, 2027, with the figure dropping in subsequent years. Termination without cause would trigger a payout of 50% of his remaining base salary. (link)

With Randall Stephenson staying on as Chair/Special Advisor to the President, freshly minted Oklahoma AD Roger Denny was asked about the hierarchy of the department and replied: “I think the opportunity to come to Oklahoma and have a Randall Stephenson, who’s a Fortune 500 CEO, there to be someone that you can lean on as you’re making decisions and setting your path on how you’re going to lead an organization, especially an organization as high-profile as Oklahoma athletics, that’s absolutely a selling point for the job. … I told them in that interview in Dallas, I said, ‘Look, I come from a partnership. I think the best businesses in the world are run by partners.’ And I think that kind of organizational humility for every decision and every moment, I don’t have to have absolute control of that. I can have partners in this process that I can rely on, and the collective understanding and knowledge of that group is always going to be better than what you’re going to get with one person in any environment. So I’m incredibly excited by the structure. You still have Joe C. there, who has been the best athletic director in the country for three decades, that you can call and say, ‘Hey, tell me how you would have navigated this. What’s this look like in your mind?’” (link)

Akron AD Dr. Andrew Goodrich visited with the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to discuss a number of topics, including how the similarities of being an FCS AD (previously at Gardner-Webb) outnumber the differences of being an FBS AD, the school’s approach to adding jersey patches, how his decision to pursue a doctorate serves him in his AD role and how he goes about evaluating and hiring head coaches. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On similarities and differences in FBS/FCS AD jobs: “I'd argue that they’re probably far more similar than dissimilar. … If our audience here is current and prospective athletics directors, I would tell you focus more on knowing the president, know the board, know the community, know their pain, know their aspirations, know their goals, and make sure that your knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences line up with what they're looking for. If that holds out, it doesn't really matter whether you came from FCS or FBS, but I'll take this moment to speak up for FCS athletics directors. It is an incredibly difficult job. And I would tell you that we've had a lot of success here at Akron here in the first, I believe I've been here for a little bit more than seven months. And I can tell you right now, I can attribute that to learning how to sharpen your claws at a place like Gardner-Webb University where you have fewer resources than your peers, but you have the same aspirations to build championship level programs. You learn how to maximize every single budget allocation that you have. You learn how to build cultures as opposed to relying on resources in order to build championship programs.”
➤ As for his strategy around jersey patches: “If and when that's ready to go, we have someone who wants to participate. ... I think us here at Akron, every athletics director in the country, has to devise their own strategy. Are they going to limit it to, ‘Hey, I'm going to have a jersey sponsor for football and a completely different sponsor for basketball, a different sponsor for women's hoops and a different sponsor, so on and so forth.’ We’ve got to figure out what works best. That's a little bit of the unknown for us. … We don't really know what it's worth until we see what people will truly pay us for it. Knowing that the jersey is going to be seen predominantly on television, whether that's linear or digital, I think it's going to draw big opportunities for programs. And then beyond that, how do you market it inside of your program?” More. (link)

➤ The NCAA has filed a motion asking Tuscaloosa Circuit Court Judge James Roberts to recuse himself from the Charles Bediako eligibility lawsuit, citing evidence that Roberts is a donor to Alabama’s Crimson Tide Foundation. Meanwhile, The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman reports Roberts has extended Bediako’s TRO for at least 10 more days due to the winter storm preventing NCAA attorney Taylor Askew from attending Tuesday’s originally scheduled hearing. (link, link)
➤ ESPN’s Pete Thamel says on the Pat McAfee Show that Clemson’s tampering allegations against Ole Miss are “going to come to the NCAA,” adding there have been 90 tampering cases processed in the last year across all sports. If Rebels HC Pete Golding is eventually found to have tampered, Thamel asks: “Is that going to stop an environment where I would estimate 90% of schools are doing some kind of tampering? My guess would be no.” (link)

➤ Kansas State women’s basketball student-athlete Tess Heal was held out of Sunday's loss to Kansas due to an NCAA violation stemming from her reported signing with Australian pro team Keilor Thunder (NBL1), according to USA Today’s Mitchell Northam, who notes that while the NBL1 season doesn't begin until spring, signing a professional contract while participating in college athletics remains a violation. Still, Wildcats HC Jeff Mittie expressed optimism for a swift resolution: "She made a mistake in regards to the timing of it. … We feel good that as soon as she gets through the reinstatement process, we’ll have her back." (link)
➤ Stanford has settled the wrongful death lawsuit with the family of late Women’s Soccer student-athlete Katie Meyer, who passed away in 2022 by suicide. No financial terms were released. Hero Sports' KC Smurthwaite examines UTEP's pivot to an experience-driven strategy ahead of its move to the Mountain West, noting: “Rather than relying solely on price points or traditional perks, UTEP has built a six-week renewal initiative centered on experiences like sideline access, trips with the team, time in the athletic director’s suite, replica jerseys, and locker room moments. The earlier fans renew, the more opportunities they have to win.” Miners Deputy AD Michael Levy reports that early football season ticket renewals are outpacing last year, while the department's "Climb Higher" major gifts campaign has already raised nearly $8M toward its $10M goal to offset transition costs and facility upgrades. Levy adds: “People are craving experiences. We’ve been intentional about listening to our supporters and asking, what do we already have that’s valuable, and how can we share it with more people — not just our top donors?” (link)

Arkansas ended FY25 $6.89M in the black. Football generated $87.1M against $57.37M in expenses. Also of note from Whole Hog Sports’ Christina Long: “About $37M of Arkansas’ $195.9M in total operating revenues for FY25 came from ‘Contributions.’ Of that $37M, $32M came from the Razorback Foundation. …[Football] saw big increases in ticket sales, media rights and conference distributions. Ticket revenue increased by $7.9M, the largest jump since at least FY09, excluding a massive increase from the capacity-restricted 2020 season to the following year when there were no limits on attendance.” Lots more. (link)

Minnesota reported a school-record $163.6M in revenue for FY25, driven primarily by a $12M increase in media rights distributions to $63M, which offset YoY declines in ticket sales ($19.6M, down from $22.7M) and contributions ($22.4M, down from $24.1M). Expenses also reached a record high of $161.2M (+5.7%), with coaching and staff compensation rising to $62.5M and Alston-related educational benefits jumping to $2.2M (up from just ~$79k in FY24). Football generated a $54M profit, while men’s hockey revenue grew to $9.7M (yielding a $2.8M surplus) thanks to a significant spike in royalties and sponsorship income. (link)
|
Oklahoma State reported a $5.3M operating deficit for FY25—its first shortfall since the COVID-impacted FY21—as expenses surged roughly $35M to $156.1M against $150.8M in revenue. While total athletic contributions jumped to $76.5M (up from $62.3M), football-specific donations dropped nearly 43% to $12.3M, and football ticket sales fell $1.2M following a 3-9 season. The financial report included over $16M in NIL compensation permitted by state law changes, though The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright notes the full impact of the $20.5M revenue-sharing cap will not appear until FY26. Overall, football revenue was down roughly $10M at $56.9M, but still easily surpassed expenses of $32.8M. Men’s basketball posted a total profit of $6.5M, up by a total of $2.3M from the previous year. (link)

Southeast Missouri State President Brad Hodson has announced that university departments, including athletics, have been asked to model budget cuts of 10%, 15%, and 20% in anticipation of a projected state-level revenue shortfall. With Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe proposing $600M in general revenue cuts, Hodson noted that higher education is often "one of the first things to get cut," exacerbating an existing $3.4M shortfall driven by lower-than-expected state appropriations (1.5% vs. budgeted 3%) and enrollment declines. While emphasizing that "no decisions have been made" and "no programs have been cut" yet, the university introduced a Voluntary Retirement Incentive Program (VRIP) to reduce payroll costs ahead of the Board of Governors' final budget vote in June.
