UC San Diego agreed to terms with new AD Andy Fee on a contract running through June 30, 2030, with a first-year base salary of $340K, according to CollegeAD. The deal includes a $100K signing bonus and 4% annual salary increases. Fee would owe a buyout of one year's salary plus $200K if he leaves before June 30, 2027, with the figure dropping in subsequent years. Termination without cause would trigger a payout of 50% of his remaining base salary. (link)

With Randall Stephenson staying on as Chair/Special Advisor to the President, freshly minted Oklahoma AD Roger Denny was asked about the hierarchy of the department and replied: “I think the opportunity to come to Oklahoma and have a Randall Stephenson, who’s a Fortune 500 CEO, there to be someone that you can lean on as you’re making decisions and setting your path on how you’re going to lead an organization, especially an organization as high-profile as Oklahoma athletics, that’s absolutely a selling point for the job. … I told them in that interview in Dallas, I said, ‘Look, I come from a partnership. I think the best businesses in the world are run by partners.’ And I think that kind of organizational humility for every decision and every moment, I don’t have to have absolute control of that. I can have partners in this process that I can rely on, and the collective understanding and knowledge of that group is always going to be better than what you’re going to get with one person in any environment. So I’m incredibly excited by the structure. You still have Joe C. there, who has been the best athletic director in the country for three decades, that you can call and say, ‘Hey, tell me how you would have navigated this. What’s this look like in your mind?’” (link)

Akron AD Dr. Andrew Goodrich visited with the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to discuss a number of topics, including how the similarities of being an FCS AD (previously at Gardner-Webb) outnumber the differences of being an FBS AD, the school’s approach to adding jersey patches, how his decision to pursue a doctorate serves him in his AD role and how he goes about evaluating and hiring head coaches. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On similarities and differences in FBS/FCS AD jobs: “I'd argue that they’re probably far more similar than dissimilar. … If our audience here is current and prospective athletics directors, I would tell you focus more on knowing the president, know the board, know the community, know their pain, know their aspirations, know their goals, and make sure that your knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences line up with what they're looking for. If that holds out, it doesn't really matter whether you came from FCS or FBS, but I'll take this moment to speak up for FCS athletics directors. It is an incredibly difficult job. And I would tell you that we've had a lot of success here at Akron here in the first, I believe I've been here for a little bit more than seven months. And I can tell you right now, I can attribute that to learning how to sharpen your claws at a place like Gardner-Webb University where you have fewer resources than your peers, but you have the same aspirations to build championship level programs. You learn how to maximize every single budget allocation that you have. You learn how to build cultures as opposed to relying on resources in order to build championship programs.”
➤ As for his strategy around jersey patches: “If and when that's ready to go, we have someone who wants to participate. ... I think us here at Akron, every athletics director in the country, has to devise their own strategy. Are they going to limit it to, ‘Hey, I'm going to have a jersey sponsor for football and a completely different sponsor for basketball, a different sponsor for women's hoops and a different sponsor, so on and so forth.’ We’ve got to figure out what works best. That's a little bit of the unknown for us. … We don't really know what it's worth until we see what people will truly pay us for it. Knowing that the jersey is going to be seen predominantly on television, whether that's linear or digital, I think it's going to draw big opportunities for programs. And then beyond that, how do you market it inside of your program?” More. (link)

➤ The NCAA has filed a motion asking Tuscaloosa Circuit Court Judge James Roberts to recuse himself from the Charles Bediako eligibility lawsuit, citing evidence that Roberts is a donor to Alabama’s Crimson Tide Foundation. Meanwhile, The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman reports Roberts has extended Bediako’s TRO for at least 10 more days due to the winter storm preventing NCAA attorney Taylor Askew from attending Tuesday’s originally scheduled hearing. (link, link)
➤ ESPN’s Pete Thamel says on the Pat McAfee Show that Clemson’s tampering allegations against Ole Miss are “going to come to the NCAA,” adding there have been 90 tampering cases processed in the last year across all sports. If Rebels HC Pete Golding is eventually found to have tampered, Thamel asks: “Is that going to stop an environment where I would estimate 90% of schools are doing some kind of tampering? My guess would be no.” (link)

➤ Kansas State women’s basketball student-athlete Tess Heal was held out of Sunday's loss to Kansas due to an NCAA violation stemming from her reported signing with Australian pro team Keilor Thunder (NBL1), according to USA Today’s Mitchell Northam, who notes that while the NBL1 season doesn't begin until spring, signing a professional contract while participating in college athletics remains a violation. Still, Wildcats HC Jeff Mittie expressed optimism for a swift resolution: "She made a mistake in regards to the timing of it. … We feel good that as soon as she gets through the reinstatement process, we’ll have her back." (link)
➤ Stanford has settled the wrongful death lawsuit with the family of late Women’s Soccer student-athlete Katie Meyer, who passed away in 2022 by suicide. No financial terms were released. ➤ The DePaud’s Nick Palazzolo reports DePaul “has secured the $20M in cash required to start building the New Athletics Practice Facility, President Rob Manuel and AD DeWayne Peevy said in an email to faculty and students. Onsite work is expected to begin in July. With grand opening in Fall 2027. The letter highlights that the facility will be funded by philanthropy generated by DePaul Athletics. However, it states: ‘If needed, the university may use short-term borrowing to keep the project on schedule, repaying any loans in full as gifts are received.’” (link)

Hero Sports' KC Smurthwaite examines UTEP's pivot to an experience-driven strategy ahead of its move to the Mountain West, noting: “Rather than relying solely on price points or traditional perks, UTEP has built a six-week renewal initiative centered on experiences like sideline access, trips with the team, time in the athletic director’s suite, replica jerseys, and locker room moments. The earlier fans renew, the more opportunities they have to win.” Miners Deputy AD Michael Levy reports that early football season ticket renewals are outpacing last year, while the department's "Climb Higher" major gifts campaign has already raised nearly $8M toward its $10M goal to offset transition costs and facility upgrades. Levy adds: “People are craving experiences. We’ve been intentional about listening to our supporters and asking, what do we already have that’s valuable, and how can we share it with more people — not just our top donors?” (link)

Arkansas ended FY25 $6.89M in the black. Football generated $87.1M against $57.37M in expenses. Also of note from Whole Hog Sports’ Christina Long: “About $37M of Arkansas’ $195.9M in total operating revenues for FY25 came from ‘Contributions.’ Of that $37M, $32M came from the Razorback Foundation. …[Football] saw big increases in ticket sales, media rights and conference distributions. Ticket revenue increased by $7.9M, the largest jump since at least FY09, excluding a massive increase from the capacity-restricted 2020 season to the following year when there were no limits on attendance.” Lots more. Minnesota reported a school-record $163.6M in revenue for FY25, driven primarily by a $12M increase in media rights distributions to $63M, which offset YoY declines in ticket sales ($19.6M, down from $22.7M) and contributions ($22.4M, down from $24.1M). Expenses also reached a record high of $161.2M (+5.7%), with coaching and staff compensation rising to $62.5M and Alston-related educational benefits jumping to $2.2M (up from just ~$79k in FY24). Football generated a $54M profit, while men’s hockey revenue grew to $9.7M (yielding a $2.8M surplus) thanks to a significant spike in royalties and sponsorship income. (link)

Oklahoma State reported a $5.3M operating deficit for FY25—its first shortfall since the COVID-impacted FY21—as expenses surged roughly $35M to $156.1M against $150.8M in revenue. While total athletic contributions jumped to $76.5M (up from $62.3M), football-specific donations dropped nearly 43% to $12.3M, and football ticket sales fell $1.2M following a 3-9 season. The financial report included over $16M in NIL compensation permitted by state law changes, though The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright notes the full impact of the $20.5M revenue-sharing cap will not appear until FY26. Overall, football revenue was down roughly $10M at $56.9M, but still easily surpassed expenses of $32.8M. Men’s basketball posted a total profit of $6.5M, up by a total of $2.3M from the previous year. (link)

Southeast Missouri State President Brad Hodson has announced that university departments, including athletics, have been asked to model budget cuts of 10%, 15%, and 20% in anticipation of a projected state-level revenue shortfall. With Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe proposing $600M in general revenue cuts, Hodson noted that higher education is often "one of the first things to get cut," exacerbating an existing $3.4M shortfall driven by lower-than-expected state appropriations (1.5% vs. budgeted 3%) and enrollment declines. While emphasizing that "no decisions have been made" and "no programs have been cut" yet, the university introduced a Voluntary Retirement Incentive Program (VRIP) to reduce payroll costs ahead of the Board of Governors' final budget vote in June. Charlotte expects to name its new AD by early March, per the Charlotte Business Journal’s Erik Spanberg. Chancellor Sharon Gaber is leading the four-person search committee consisting of Board of Trustees Chair/Truist Chief Consumer and Small Business Banking Officer Dontá Wilson, Northwood Ravin CEO David Ravin and Assoc. AD for Governance and Regulatory Affairs Katie Renaut. When asked about the importance of candidates’ business credentials, she said, “Somebody who has experience generating new revenue is exciting to me.” TurnkeyZRG will be paid $75K for assisting in the search process. New Oklahoma AD Roger Denny “checked nearly every box OU believed mattered most in college athletics’ current moment,” per The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley, who notes Denny’s non-traditional path quickly caught the attention of OU President Joseph Harroz, who tells Sulley: “Five minutes in, I was thinking, ‘Here we are talking to a Deputy AD. This seems anathema to the direction we were going.’ The next 2 hours and 55 minutes, I was just captured. … He has four and a half years of deeper operational experience. He was directly assigned to be in charge of football. You've seen what they've done at Illinois, but he has his broader context. As I look at that legal background, as I look at that training, he speaks with knowledge of how to deploy it and employ it. Given my legal background, I know a decent amount. But when Roger’s in the room, I am learning.” Denny: “The buzzword around our industry is alignment, right? Everyone talks about alignment, top to bottom, this and that. What I would tell you about Oklahoma is it's not just alignment. It is absolute commitment to excellence and winning, and not just winning, but winning championships.” Harroz: “I can’t wait to get the guy here. When you look at this environment and all that college athletics means and what it means to Oklahoma, this guy’s a weapon.” More. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White isn’t optimistic about what he’s seeing in college sports and feels only collective bargaining, which he’s long advocated for, can improve the situation. White: “I would say it’s gotten worse and that might be a necessary evil because what I’m seeing and I’m hopeful of is more people are opening their eyes to something that our Chancellor [Donde Plowman] and I have been saying for about four years now, which is there’s only two solutions to this problem. It’s Congress changing the laws of our country, or us accepting what the antitrust law says. There is a construct in that legal environment that exists today that the NBA and the NFL are structured on, and that’s called collective bargaining. I think that there’s a way to do that in higher education that makes sense. I think we can actually have stronger connection to academics than what we have right now. I think we can slow down just the frequency of transfers…. Obviously the fan affinity, fans I think would appreciate a little more stability in that space. A lot of the players would appreciate more stability in that space. Players value leadership and continuity in the locker room. In my conversations with leaders of our teams and nationally, I think people would be surprised to hear that a lot of the things we as fans, as administrators, as coaches want, the players want, too. They want their piece of the pie. The revenue has gotten so significant, and they deserve a piece of the pie. We’ve got to organize it, though, and I think the way to do that is through collective bargaining.” Lots more. (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee's success in hiring football and basketball coaches stands out not just for the choices she’s made but for her ability to sell VU to candidates without having much tangible to sell, according to The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode. Lee: “Both sides are taking a leap of faith, right? … Everyone understood what Vanderbilt was — which was not all bad, by the way — but also had this zeal and enthusiasm for what it could be. I have that spark, but I’m looking for that spark in their eyes, and I saw it in all three.” Commodores Men’s Basketball HC Mark Byington: “First of all, I think like-minded people are attracted to each other, and I think that was part of the process with all three of us. Candice talked about wanting this to be a new age of Vanderbilt athletics, and you could tell this wasn’t just some rehearsed thing she says from one candidate to the other.” VU Football HC Clark Lea: “Candice understands people. She has incredible instincts when it comes to the human aspects of leadership.” Vandy Women’s Basketball HC Shea Ralph: “I’ve never told Candice this, but I was sold on Vanderbilt after 10 minutes talking to her. My husband knew her well, and he’s like, ‘This lady is going to do something special.’ … When it comes down to it, what Candice does is hire great human beings.” (link)

“Regardless how we slice this thing, it’s got to get better.” That’s Rutgers AD Keli Zinn discussing the Scarlet Knights’ FY25 athletics financial report that showed the department’s deficit above $70M for the third time in five years at $78M, bringing Rutgers’ athletics deficit to $516.9M since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15. Overall, RU registered $193.8M in expenses against $146.6M in total operating revenues. Zinn: “You could make the argument that we do not have an expense problem. But we do in fact have a revenue problem and a pretty significant one. … Obviously our expenses have exceeded and outpaced our revenue and in some cases year over year to a pretty significant degree. That’s a piece that we will spend quite a bit of time on, understanding that the current fiscal year that we sit in there was a $20.5M expense with the revenue sharing (for athletes) and the additional scholarship support. … I think what you’ll see a year from now is that’s going to be our worst year looking at a profit and loss scenario. But you’ll see some level of improvement that’s expected in that ‘26-‘27 year and then by ’27-’28, based upon the current projections we have, in some growth categories and opportunities with revenue, I’m hopeful you’ll actually see (the deficit) start to decline.” More. Oregon reported significant increases in both FY25 revenue ($185.4M) and expenses ($182.7M), per The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke, who notes UO witnessed gains of 9.6% and 9.3% YoY from FY24, respectively. The lone sport to generate revenue was football with a net total of $58.8M from $119.6M in total revenue, offset by $60.8M in expenses. All other Duck sports operated at a loss, including men’s basketball at a more than $2.4M net loss, while men’s and women’s track and field lost more than $6M. Oregon spent $41.6M on coaching salaries, benefits and bonuses in FY25, a more than $3.5M increase over the previous fiscal year. Support staff and administrative employees made $31.6M, up nearly $4M from FY24. Team travel also grew in cost, as expected in navigating road trips in the Big Ten: $10.9M in FY25 compared to $8.7M in FY24. More including the full FY25 financial report. (link)

FBS athletic departments have inked more than 60 deals since the NCAA ended its ban on “commercial sponsor advertisements on football fields for regular-season games” back in 2024, per SBJ’s David Broughton, who notes the SEC boasted the highest percentage of schools playing on a field with at least one sponsor logo for at least one game last year at 87.5% (only Texas A&M and Mississippi State didn’t have one). Overall, Learfield has signed 23 multi-year deals over the 19 months the assets have been sellable, by far the most of any multimedia rights partner with expectations that figure will double by summer of 2027. Navigate estimates the maximum exposure value that brands aligned with both SEC and Big Ten programs can generate is north of $3M, at $3.2M and $3.6M, respectively, while the ACC ($981.7K) and Big 12 ($735.6K) lag further behind. Navigate Senior Analyst Kellen Foster: “Brands that invest with Group of Five institutions are likely motivated less by the mass visibility of on-field exposure and more by qualitative outcomes — community engagement, local goodwill and visible support for the university.” More. Arizona State has extended its apparel deal with Adidas by five years, starting this month, per Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman, who notes ASU players that appeared in recent jersey promos highlighting the release of a James Harden-branded alternate jersey will receive NIL money.
