NCAA SVP of Championships Lynda Tealer joined College.town’s Daniel Gillman at the NCAA Convention to discuss the impact of the NCAA’s restructured governance model, noting that sport oversight committees now manage both championship operations and regulatory policy. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ “The goal really is that a particular sport oversight committee can take a step back, not just run a championship, though that's a heavy lift, but what are the things that impact the sport, they can really sort of be the steward for that particular sport at the collegiate level on a national scale. And it's empowered these folks to really take broad looks at the health of particular sports."
➤ Tealer also highlighted the success of moving the FCS Championship to Nashville, which secured a primetime ESPN slot and delivered the third-largest TV audience in the event's history. “I think it demonstrated the importance of FCS football nationally. It demonstrated the importance of FCS football to ESPN and the NCAA. So all told it was just really successful. I think it showcased FCS football and also again was just a real demonstration of how important FCS football is to the NCAA."
➤ On changing the volleyball schedule: "One was this idea to not have these giant gaps between the matches that you would treat it as a regional, right? So you'd have one match right after another. ... And again, sort of prepping for what's next. Can we operate in this way? Will fans buy in? Can coaches adapt? Can teams adapt? And then we go to the next, you know, when these are all on linear television. Let's hope right that we've already sort of established how this is going to flow." (link)

The Tulsa World’s Berry Tramel writes on the hire of new Oklahoma AD Roger Denny: “Denny will succeed or fail based on his people skills. Can he lead? Can he engender loyalty and trust, can he motivate and encourage, can he sell and rally all the many people that make a big-time athletic program operate successfully? … [outgoing AD Joe] Castiglione set quite the standard; the Sooners have won at least one NCAA championship in each of the last 12 years. This athletic director job is football-heavy, but it goes beyond the gridiron. You want to get on the wrong side of a million Oklahomans, go messing with Patty Gasso’s softball program. Joe C. became the gold standard of university athletic directors. But Denny’s job description is different. Navigate OU through the maze of becoming a pro-football organization, in a frenzied time. A sport that always seemed to have few scruples but now seems to have none. Tough assignment. But Denny’s résumé says he’s the man for the job. So long as he packs people skills as he makes the move to Norman.” (link)
|
The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson also provides perspective on the Sooners new boss: “Denny looks like he not only understands (both the complexity of the moment and the opportunities it presents) but also can handle them. Listen, the job he’s taken isn’t easy. Not in this era of change and uncertainty in college athletics. Not when you’re taking over for an icon. Not when you’re the answer to the most-important-hire-ever question. But [OU President Joseph] Harroz and [Chair and Special Advisor to the President for OU Athletics Randall] Stephenson went looking for someone who could walk, chew gum and maybe negotiate world peace at the same time. Roger Denny will be asked to do a lot as the OU athletic director. Then again, a lot is what he’s already done.” (link)

USA Today’s Mitchell Northam gets feedback from several women’s basketball coaches on the new transfer portal window for men’s and women’s hoops. Northam: “To sum up the collective thoughts of several women’s college basketball coaches around the country, this rule change solves one transfer portal problem — keeping the window closed while games are still being played — but leaves other issues unaddressed. … What moving the opening date of the portal does, some coaches argue, is it puts everyone on a level playing field when it comes to juggling the portal and the postseason.” More key nuggets…
➤ Texas HC Vic Schaefer: “Last year, we’re in the Elite Eight and my conscience won’t allow me to go start recruiting kids when my juice and energy and focus needs to be on (my team). We had a team in (the SEC), I think they recruited their entire — what is now four of their starting five — before we ever got done playing. So, I think it’s a great decision, and it’s just fair.”
➤ Fairfield HC Carly Thibault-DuDonis: “Several challenges remain in managing the transfer portal, with agent involvement among the most significant. Agents are frequently facilitating early contact to gauge interest. In professional sports, such activity would constitute tampering and carry meaningful consequences. In the collegiate space, however, this behavior exists in a gray area that allows transfer-related communication to occur before the portal officially opens.”
➤ Duke HC Kara Lawson: “I don't know that it changes things too much. I guess it is later than it was before, and you won't have people playing during the time of it, but, you know, it's not like the communication is starting then. It's happening all year, and that's the unfortunate part of the environment we're in right now. That's how some people already know where they're going on the first day of the portal.” Lots more. Wyoming Football HC Jay Sawvel will give $125K of his salary back to the program in the form of revenue sharing, plus roughly $100K of his annual retention bonus to ensure he could keep certain staff members. Sawvel: “I thought that with what we had returning player wise, with where we were at budget wise -- I thought we could have a really good (transfer portal) cycle here -- we needed a shove a little bit, and we needed a little extra. … There was one vehicle and one means to do it, and that was to do it yourself.” 7220Sports.com’s Cody Tucker reports: “Sawvel gave almost double that amount last offseason, according to a source familiar with the situation.” (link)

New England Patriots wide receiver/former LSU student-athlete Kayshon Boutte pens for The Players’ Tribune about his gambling addiction, which started after he got hurt his sophomore year with the Tigers. He fell into a depression, started doing drugs and wondered how he could “get that feeling back of competing” while he was sidelined. So he started gambling. Lots here from Boutte: “Gambling is a complicated thing, dawg. Especially with the apps. You know how the casino don’t got no windows, or clocks? It’s all a mind game. They don’t want you thinking about the outside world. They don’t want you to look out the window, see the sun done gone down, and realize how long you been gambling. Well, the phone is like that, too, in its own way. I’d be in my own world. Laying in bed, in the dark, in pain, with the light glowing on my face. It was a lonely experience. Like you in an empty casino, alone at the blackjack table. Adding more money to the account, and more money, and more money, with the press of a couple buttons. You lose touch with reality. It gets to a point where it feels like the money ain’t even real. But it is real, because in the real world, I was living paycheck to paycheck. Waiting on NIL checks to clear. It’s sad when I think about how, as a kid, my ability to dream was an asset. That’s what got me to LSU, and later, all the way to the NFL. But as a gambling addict, my dreaming was my biggest liability. It was like my own mind was working against me.” After hitting rock bottom, which included losing $90K, Boutte says of his turnaround: “I wish I could tell you I came to my senses on my own.…. But honestly, only two things saved me. One was getting healthy enough to play football again. The other was becoming a father, as a junior in college.” Long but important read. (link)

In more than 70% of college athletics relocations, the spouse becomes the "de facto project manager," shouldering a massive administrative and emotional burden while the coach focuses on the new program. This imbalance often leads to domestic chaos, family burnout, and a "delayed integration" that can distract a coach during their critical first months on the job. To address this, D1.relocation provides a dedicated Director of Relocation Operations (DORO) to act as a professional advocate for the spouse. By managing everything from home sales and school research to logistical coordination, the DORO ensures the family's "unsung MVP" isn't left to DIY the move alone, allowing both the family and the coach to hit the ground running. Bama247’s Alex Scarborough profiles Susan Peal, the retired NCAA Director of Governance and Policy who architected the transfer portal following a 2017 proposal to shift from a "request-to-transfer" to a "notification-of-transfer" model. Peal, now an adjunct professor at The Citadel, defends the portal as a success for its intended purpose—streamlining compliance workflows that were previously bogged down by manual emails and tracer forms—and believes that public ire is misplaced. What’s changed are policy shifts like the one-time transfer exception, COVID eligibility extensions and, most notably, NIL: "It's interesting because when you look at reasons why student-athletes transferred, it generally fell into the categories of: I'm not getting playing time. I'm not a right fit in this system or with this coach, academic reasons. If you look at now — in those revenue sports — what's the number one reason? A better NIL deal. So everything's changed. And, again, that's not because of the transfer portal. That's because of the transfer rules changing and then name, image and likeness coming into play." Therefore, she adds: "Screaming at the transfer portal is like screaming at a traffic intersection. It doesn't dictate the rules of the road." (link)

Industry insiders are touting 2026 as a potential “gold rush” for marketing and sponsorship sales, highlighted by the FIFA World Cup’s return to the U.S. for the first time in 32 years, per SBJ’s Terry Lefton. POV Sports Marketing CEO Molly Arbogast: “Every brand wants to be connected to the World Cup in some way, but we are being sure to ask them, ‘OK, but what are you doing July 20th when it’s over?’ It’s a different environment than I can remember in my 30 years. You’ve still got some predicting a market correction, but most brands are moving forward. So, I would tell you that 2026 seems alive and well. Premium hospitality doesn’t seem to have any [price] ceiling, which is testimony to how important experience has become and remains across the industry.” Developments on the college sports side are also adding to what Lefton references as “boundless optimism.” Excel Sports Management EVP/Head of Properties Jason Miller: “College is the story this year — it’s the hottest new space. Now you have on-field and on-uniform [ads] opening up, along with a new willingness to listen, even among the most prestigious schools. In order to pay those NIL salaries, schools are now going to have to integrate brands across their entire campus, which wasn’t generally the case before. … That’s where it gets interesting.” More. Maine AD Jude Killy received an extension back in September that could keep him in Orono through June of 2030. Killy’s base pay increased from $250K to $300K as part of the deal with subsequent 4% annual increases. There’s also a yearly $25K retention bonus (in addition to the standard slew of smaller bonuses for academic & competition achievements), plus the opportunity for an automatic two-year extension should he complete the Athletics Master Plan, if Men’s or Women’s Hockey make the Frozen Four or if Men’s Basketball qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Finally, if the institution moves to replace Killy at any point it would owe him one year’s salary. If Killy were to exit before the end of June 2027, he’d owe $300K, though after that date he’d owe $10 (yes, $10). All per CollegeAD. (link)

Clemson brass provided a detailed account of what they say is obvious tampering by the Ole Miss Football program in relation to Cal-to-Clemson-to-Ole Miss transfer linebacker Luke Ferrelli for a reported doubling of Ferrelli’s $1M deal with the Tigers after he was already on campus. Clemson AD Graham Neff: “There are always going to be bad actors … being able to enforce rules is key to this industry.” Neff also said Clemson is prepared to take further legal action, if necessary, and is also ready to sign the CSC’s participation agreement. Of note from Tigers HC Dabo Swinney: “Listen, this guy has been a head coach for four weeks. I said, ‘You reach out to the GM. I’m going to give him some grace. And you let him know that we know what’s going on, and if he doesn’t cease communication, I’m going to turn him in.’ I really thought that would be the end of it, but it wasn’t. …I wanna challenge all those coaches that have reached out to me. You need to step up and call it out. Otherwise…shut your mouth and don’t complain again.” (link, link); Watch Swinney’s full breakdown of the situation. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne provided additional perspective on the Charles Bediako situation for his Men’s Basketball program. In part: “There are many programs across the country with former G League and EuroLeague players on their rosters who have been deemed eligible. At the end of the day, these are men with professional basketball experience that are now playing in college. The distinctions between those cases and Charles’ situation are without real differences. A professional contract should be a professional contract. Why should a student-athlete who earned millions competing professionally overseas be eligible to return to college, while someone earning $50K annually in the NBA G League is not? Similarly, an athlete who leaves high school for professional basketball returning to college later is okay, while a student who entered the draft during college, perhaps based on incomplete or poor advice, may be barred. These distinctions are impossible to explain, undermine confidence in the system and do not meaningfully advance the educational mission of college athletics.” (link)
|
Meanwhile, NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt released a statement after a call with NABC members that centered on existing rules & rationale for pre- and post-NBA Draft eligibility: “If these rules surrounding the NCAA pre- and post-draft rules cannot be enforced, it would create an unstable environment for the student-athletes, schools building a roster for the following season and the NBA. The NCAA membership has a set of rules in place regarding the pre- and post-NBA draft eligibility that have clearly been in place and supported by all parties until these recent court challenges.” (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski downplays the likelihood of further Big Ten expansion, telling Gold & Black’s Tom Dienhart that the current 18-team structure is stable unless the national environment becomes "fractured" to the point where "we feel like we need to do our own thing." Bobinski: “There’s just not teams that are going to add value equivalent to what they would take from the whole. We are 18 members now, we each share 1/18 of the annual revenue pot. If you bring somebody in, they’ve got to pay for themselves, plus keep everybody else whole. It’s a pretty tall order. So, who’s going to really add that kind of value? We all know who the one (Notre Dame) is. I don’t need to say it, but that’s a different conversation." (link)

New Mexico is requesting $50M in state funding to begin a long-awaited facelift to its 65-year-old University Stadium. According to documents shared with the Albuquerque Journal, “The funding would modernize “University Stadium’s most critical systems,” including expanding and adding restroom fixtures, widening concourses and renovating entrances on the north side of the stadium.” It would be the first of five planned phases of renovation for the facility, which has not received a large-scale facelift since opening in 1960. Also from the shared docs: “A winning football season has reignited fan energy, campus pride and community momentum, while long-deferred renovations have left the stadium behind modern standards. Renovating in place is the most responsible and cost-effective path forward … transforming this landmark into a year-round, multi-use destination that advances UNM’s statewide mission, strengthens athletics and delivers lasting benefits for all of New Mexico.” (link)

Hawai’i is seeking legislative support during the 2026 session to “strengthen its athletics program and ensure long-term stability for student-athletes in a rapidly changing national college sports landscape that includes name, image and likeness (NIL).” UH is requesting a combined $22.3M in operating and capital improvement funding, including $15M in operating support and $7.3M for athletics-related capital improvements. The operating request includes $10.08M to support core areas such as nutrition, recruiting, travel, equipment, medical care, academic support and routine facility maintenance. The proposal also includes $5M to establish an institutional NIL program. Rainbow Warriors AD Matt Elliott: “College athletics has changed, and our objective is to adapt in a way that reflects the values of this university and this state. Our goal is to provide a stable, student-centered foundation that supports academic success, competitive excellence and responsible NIL program opportunities, while continuing to do our part through fundraising and community partnerships to ensure UH Mānoa Athletics remains 'Our Team. Hawaiʻi's Team.'” (link)

All told, Louisiana will have cut 25% of its athletics staff, or 35 positions, amid a university-wide financial crisis. The Ragin Cajuns initially reduced expenses from $46M to $42.7M by leaving positions vacant and cutting operational budgets, but are now being asked by campus to do more. UL AD Bryan Maggard: “We are all in this together. We absolutely know we're one team, as a university, and we're working very hard to try to meet our financial goals.” UL reported a $12.6M deficit in FY24 and ranked seventh out of 14 Sun Belt schools in revenue generation without institutional support ($14.6M) and seventh in total expenses ($46.1M). When it comes to institutional support, UL drops to No. 12 out of 14 at $18.9M – only better than Southern Miss and Louisiana Monroe. The gap leaves UL nearly $9M below the Sun Belt average of $27.7M in institutional support. (link)

The Friday edition of CRO.ticker is fresh off the press and hot enough to burn your fingers. Sponcon Sports Founder Alex Kopilow highlights social media posts as a missed opportunity in college athletics monetization, Retail Brew’s Jeena Sharma profiles the Australian Open’s aggressive commercial strategy, which may be duplicable by your athletic department, and Fast Company’s Jeff Beer profiles New Balance's ascent as a "boutique challenger brand," highlighted by the signing of Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg. Also, Deloitte’s 29th Annual Football Money League reveals that the top 20 revenue-generating soccer clubs in the world last year collectively generated a record €12.4B, an 11% increase YoY, led by Real Madrid, which generated roughly 10% of that total alone. Lots more inside. (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman notes that while the Big Ten has now won three football national championships in a row, the SEC’s average television audience surged by 49% this season, while the Big Ten’s dropped 11%, with SEC games drawing 2M more viewers. Bachman adds: “Since expansion, SEC games are more competitive, making for better television. The average margin of victory this season was 11.5 points, the tightest in nearly two decades, according to Stats Perform. The average margin in Big Ten games, meanwhile, was nearly 17 points, slightly up from two years ago.” (link)
|
Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill responds: “Takes time for perception to catch up to reality. Longtime perception has obviously been that the SEC runs CFB. After three straight B1G natties that’s changing. B1G probably won’t catch the SEC in ratings next year but this margin will close. Just to go a little further with this, there are two meaningful advantages the SEC has in viewership that are basically independent of on-field performance. One, the current SEC TV deal makes it easier than it used to be to find the best SEC games. Meanwhile the current B1G deal makes it harder than it used to be to find the best B1G games. Two, in general the B1G markets care a lot more about the major pro sports than the SEC markets do, so the time they have available for sports is more fragmented. There are exceptions to that of course but broadly speaking a Minnesota or Washington fan is going to be way, way more invested in NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL than an Arkansas or Ole Miss fan. The B1G markets are bigger, more dynamic and less focused on one thing. Having the best product on the field, which the B1G now obviously does, will help viewership but there are still going to be some meaningful structural advantages for SEC viewership.” (link)
|
ESPN SVP of Research Flora Kelly chimes in: “I agree with Mike on a lot, but I don’t think one title defines ‘product quality.’ Parity matters. The SEC delivers it: more double-ranked matchups in the regular season (23 vs 12) and significantly closer games (13.5 MOV vs 19.9 elsewhere). That’s the weekly product.” (link)

ESPN College GameDay’s postseason viewership was up 30% YoY to an average of 2.4M this football season. The show leading into last Monday night's National Championship drew 2.6M viewers (+45% YoY), while the Peach Bowl semifinal edition attracted 2.9M, the third most-watched postseason episode ever. Notably, the Oklahoma broadcast for the College Football Playoff’s first round surged 87% to 2.6M viewers despite a shorter runtime. ESPN also notes Pat McAfee has now awarded $2.9M to students and $3.35M to charity since his kicking segment's inception. (link)
