Oklahoma officially introduced its new AD Roger Denny on Wednesday. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ “There’s such an energy and enthusiasm around this program. … There is only one Oklahoma. This place is special and unique and I want to be clear, that word often gets misused. I mean that in the absolute definitional sense. There’s one of these. There’s one Oklahoma and I’m so honored to have this opportunity to lead this program. … The challenge at hand now is to take the torch from [previous AD] Joe [Castiglione] and to really build on the legacy of success that he’s cultivated here, and I’m ready to accept that challenge and excited by it.”
➤ On reaching his goals for Oklahoma: “There’s one goal for every single program that we sponsor. That goal is not progress. It’s not wins, it's championships. That doesn’t happen in silos. Our administration has to and will match the competitive urgency that our coaches and student-athletes bring on to the field and into the gym every day. … Now’s the time for impact, and for us to have the impact that we should have and we will have, it’s gonna require us to achieve the full potential of this program. For us to fulfill that potential, we’re gonna have to match an incredible legacy and history of support with an underdog’s spirit and work ethic. That’s who I am. It’s the only way I know how to do it. … It’s how the Deputy AD at Illinois becomes head guy at Oklahoma. As an underdog, the path to success will require us to be obsessive about the details, take measured risk to get ahead of the curve, build better, work smarter and be committed to execution and accountability. And when all of that fails, we can’t and won’t be afraid of a fight. I promise you we’ll stay in that fight longer than anyone else.”
➤ On his next steps moving forward: “Over these next few weeks, I’ll spend a lot of time listening to our student-athletes, coaches, our staff, our fans, our supporters and our alumni. People are going to hear the words ‘why’ and ‘why not’ from me more times than you can count. … Listening is only the beginning of leadership here. Once we’ve taken that input and turned it into direction, we’ll move forward with focus, urgency and resolve. And we’ll measure ourselves and communicate outcomes to this group, and everyone else, honestly as we go along the way. I’m not gonna do this alone. We need all of Sooner Nation. This moment calls for alignment and action. Progress favors the first movers, but also those that are most committed to the cause.” Full presser. (link)

The NCAA spent $1.75M this past year on federal lobbying in an as-of-yet unsuccessful bid to convince Congress to pass legislation protecting what remains of its amateurism model, nearly double the amount the association logged in 2024, per Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich. Federal lobbying disclosures don’t necessarily represent the full breadth of spending on lobbying activities with the NCAA and power leagues having also retained outside PR firms and incurred travel expenses for sending commissioners and NCAA employees to Washington to lobby on its behalf. Christovich: “The specific effort to protect amateurism began in earnest in 2019. The group’s lobbying spending has grown steadily since then, from about $700K in 2019 to $890K in 2024. In all, the six (and now five, without the Pac-12) organizations—all of which are 501(c)(3) educational nonprofits with legal lobbying limits—-have spent more than $10M combined. … Last year, however, the NCAA launched an unprecedented blitz, upping that spending from $890K to $1.75M,” marking the first year of more than $1M in lobbying spending. Pittsburgh is working to adjust how the Panthers ticket at Acrisure Stadium, per Panther-Lair’s Chris Peak, who points to AD Allen Greene’s new approach for “right-sizing the stadium.” Under the plan, tickets for the upper levels on the end and west sidelines won’t be sold, resulting in a reduced capacity of 51,416, down from 68,400. Overall, the effort will drop the facility’s total capacity from No. 2 to No. 10 in the ACC and result in fans filling the lower bowl. Greene: “Prior to getting here, I'd heard about our capacity and heard about our fan experience. One of the very first things [Football HC Pat] Narduzzi said was our fans, players want to run out of the stadium and feel the energy from our fans. And so creating a more intimate environment in this way allows us the opportunity to do that. … Having fans closer together, shoulder to shoulder. I think people just have more fun and enjoy themselves more when they're closer to people who are cheering for their team.” More. (link)

Utah is reportedly planning to renovate rather than replace the existing Huntsman Center, with the facility expected to reduce capacity from its current total of 15K fans. According to the Daily Utah Chronicle's John Leone, luxury seating is likely to be an emphasis in the project with premium seating options, such as suites and club-style seating, becoming increasingly important experience drivers across college sports. The updated Huntsman Center would likely reshape portions of the lower bowl and concourse areas to expand those offerings. At this point, no official timeline or cost estimate has been released and the university has yet to publicly confirm details. (link)

Recruiting costs are shrinking as college football teams adapt to the new transfer portal era, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams. Tennessee spent $4.6M on football recruiting during FY25, a 15% decrease YoY from FY24, when it spent more than any other public school ($5.39M). Texas A&M rated as the third-largest spender in 2024, but its football recruiting budget fell 25% in FY25 ($3.09M). Georgia’s, which ranked fourth in 2024, plunged 27% ($2.98M), while recruiting costs also fell 24% at LSU and 6% at Texas. Libit and Novy-Williams: “While the 2025 drops are most pronounced in football, they’re reflected across the entire recruiting budget. Of those five schools, all but Texas saw overall recruiting spending fall year-over-year. … [Player compensation and freedom of movement have] upended recruiting, which now often boils down to one single piece of data—how much will an athlete be paid to go to this school? There’s also a lot more video available on a potential recruit’s talents, and more upfront transparency about where they might like to play next. It’s created a much more active—if also less expensive—offseason recruiting period.” These newfound recruiting discounts are not necessarily resulting in a dip in overall budgets, however, as operating expenses at Tennessee (25%), Georgia (24%) and Texas (15%) all witnessed jumps from FY24 to FY25. The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports further on an important but previously overlooked detail in the new College Football Playoff selection criteria starting in 2026: while the four Power 4 conference champions are guaranteed spots, the automatic bid reserved for the highest-ranked Group of 6 team is not required to be a conference champion. This nuance, embedded in the MOU signed nearly two years ago, caught multiple G6 leaders by surprise, as many believed they had secured a champion-specific guarantee. Vannini writes: “Multiple G6 leaders told The Athletic they could not recall much, if any, conversation among themselves about removing the G6 championship requirement.” The provision theoretically protects highly ranked G6 contenders who suffer upsets in title games—like a 2021 Cincinnati or 2017 UCF—from being leapfrogged by lower-ranked champions; however, leaders worry it could devalue conference championship games and say they plan to discuss potential revisions later this year. (link)
|
Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey reacts to Vannini’s report: “The system they built wasn’t built for us… it has been intentional. Speak now or forever hold your peace. Nothing to be fearful of as they are doing it openly and we have a responsibility to those we serve and represent… that’s the job whether it is comfortable or not. We represent something bigger than ourselves!” (link)

Several Michigan State trustees have raised concerns about the lack of oversight over hundreds of millions of dollars expected to flow through MSU’s new tax-exempt Spartan Ventures nonprofit, according to The Detroit News’ Sarah Atwood, who notes that as of now, “there are no plans for any trustee, the fiduciaries of the university, to sit on the board of Spartan Media Ventures or any other potential for-profit arms of the nonprofit.” It's also unclear whether the new entity “will require a subsequent Board of Trustees vote to set up or if the newly announced Spartan Ventures board will be solely responsible for its creation and oversight.” MSU spokesperson Emily Guerrant confirmed last month that “both will be independent entities” and “contended that they would not be subject to the Open Meetings or Freedom of Information acts,” with any information sent to the University available through open records requests. That concerned Trustees Dennis Denno and Mike Balow, who mentioned they felt cut out of the operations. Denno: “We’re a public body. When people lose faith… it's when things are being done in the dark.” Balow: “College athletics is changing by the day. It’s a good thing we have an athletic director that thinks outside the box. We were elected to be the oversight. We can’t do the job if we don’t know what’s going on.” More. (link)

Incoming Oklahoma AD Roger Denny weighs in on two of the industry’s most pressing matters in collective bargaining and private equity, as the Sooners continue to be in the headlines…
➤ “It’s understanding what collective bargaining is and what it’s not. And when you look at the time frame right now, you’re hearing a lot of folks with microphones saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got to get to collective bargaining as quickly as possible. We’ve got to do this.’ And there seems to be this perception that that’s a right-now solution, and that’s just not the way collective bargaining works. … You’re really looking at a three- to five-year process at best that it’s going to take to identify who the bargaining units are and how they’re organized. … It’s just an understanding of the law applicable to collective bargaining that you can bring in the SEC room and into the national conversation to make sure that we’re not proceeding with this unrealistic expectation that that’s going to solve all today’s problems. That may solve problems three or five years from now, but we’ve got to come up with a different bridge to solve today’s problems.”
➤ Denny on private equity: “Understanding what private equity looks like, and, more importantly, what the back end of a private equity deal looks like, having helped folks unwind those deals over a long period of time, I think, allows you to have a little wider aperture on this thing. So that we’re not just staring at a huge bucket of money on the front end, thinking like, ‘Oh, that’s a great deal. We got to jump at that.’ We have to understand the issues and see the future a little bit on how those things play out, so that we can proceed into those conversations with appropriate caution.” (link)
➤ More from Norman as the Oklahoma Board of Regents will consider the contracts of incoming AD Roger Denny and Football AC Jason Witten, as well as adjustments for several coaching contracts during its meeting January 29-30, according to The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley, who adds: “Also included on the agenda were some major gifts to athletics. An anonymous donor gifted $25M to OU athletics, while the Gaylord family also donated $25M to OU athletics. Other anonymous gifts to athletics of $10M and $7.5M were included.” (link)

Tulane AD David Harris touches on a number of topics in his latest fan correspondence, continuing on to highlight record ticket revenue as well as an 83% increase in donors and a 373% increase in dollars YoY as fundraising brought in $1.68M from 519 total donors. Additionally, Harris anticipates being able to utilize the Green Wave Indoor Practice Facility starting in March, while the first phase of the Goldring Tennis Facility is slated to be finalized within the next few months. Hero Sports’ KC Smurthwaite unpacks UC Davis AD Rocko DeLuca’s "brick-by-brick" strategy as the department prepares to join the Mountain West for non-football sports in July 2026. DeLuca has launched IGNITE 2.0, an updated roadmap focused on modernizing facilities and expanding support staff—highlighted by a sports medicine model featuring 16 full-time trainers and three physicians. Financially, the department’s operating budget has grown from ~$32M to over $55M during his tenure, and DeLuca confirms the Aggies will opt into revenue sharing this year after initially declining, stating: "We want to be in a position to benefit from the next phase of collegiate athletics, not just survive it." Football will remain in the Big Sky, a pragmatic decision DeLuca frames as pursuing a "national championship caliber program" at the FCS level rather than chasing FBS status prematurely. He adds: “To have the success that we’re having right now is incredible; that gives me even more hope on the future. If we put more fuel into this machine, do things the right way, we’ll continue to have success.” (link)

Montana AD Kent Haslam notes revenue derived from a list of specific initiatives will be shared with football, men’s basketball and starting next season, with women’s basketball. Those initiatives include: increased fees added to all tickets sold to athletic and other select events, as well as for each suite in Washington-Grizzly Stadium, that go directly to revenue share; operation of the Adams Center and Washington-Grizzly Stadium as entertainment and concert venues with revenue generated supporting athletic operations and revenue share; establishing various licensing partnerships (with more coming) for products such as the Up With beer at Draught Works that goes directly to revenue share; partnerships with local hotels that provide support back to our revenue share as athletics brings events to the Missoula community; and fan contributions to general revenue share through Good Ol' Grizzlies. Revenue share accounts for each of the university's 15 Division I sports have also been established through the UM Foundation and contributions may be directed to a specific sport. More. (link)

Compensation for Deputy ADs in the FCS varies widely depending on the conference, according to new data from Collegiate Sports Connect’s Talent Benchmarking tool. The median salary for this cohort, $114,976, falls inside a nearly $100K spread between the minimum ($81K) and maximum ($176K) salaries, with the CAA setting the financial standard at a conference median of $162,349. Following the CAA, the America East ($137K) and Missouri Valley ($130K) conferences show strong investment in the role, while the top 25th percentile across the subdivision pushes past $135K, underscoring the significant earning potential for top-tier administrators serving as a department's primary operational lead. Alabama men’s basketball student-athlete Charles Bediako does not oppose the NCAA’s motion for Tuscaloosa Circuit Court Judge James Roberts to recuse himself, according to AL.com’s Nick Kelly, who adds: “The main points made by Bediako’s attorneys in the filing: UA isn’t a party in the lawsuit, ‘and the NCAA rightly concedes (the judge) has no financial relationship with Mr. Bediako.’ UA is the largest university in the state and has the only public law school, and the filing highlights how many judges in the state have some type of connection to UA and/or athletics. ‘It cannot be the case that any lawsuit that tangentially touches upon the University would result in recusal of every judge who maintains ties to the University.’ Bediako and his camp do not have ‘any concern regarding the court’s impartiality’ but do not oppose the motion for recusal.” (link)

Virginia Tech reported a $5.07M surplus for FY25, marking the third consecutive year of profitability, with operating revenues climbing nearly $22M to $161.2M and expenses rising to $156.1M. Revenue growth was fueled by increases in direct institutional support (up $7.6M to $8.4M), contributions (up $7M to $38.7M), and ticket sales (up $4.4M to $20.3M), while expenses spiked in fundraising/marketing (up $12.6M to $15.4M) and Alston-related educational benefits ($4.4M). Football remained the department's financial engine, generating a $32.4M profit that offset a combined $36.8M deficit across all 17 other sports, including a $2.2M loss for men's basketball (down from a $1.7M profit in FY24). Football-specific spending rose to $44.5M, with increases in recruiting (up $715K to nearly $2M), assistant coaching salaries (up $700K to $7.1M), and equipment/uniforms (up $2.5M to $4.4M). Looking ahead, new Football HC James Franklin’s contract mandates further investment, raising the recruiting budget to $3M, the assistant salary pool to $9.5M, and the support staff budget to $6M. Iowa Women’s Basketball revenue decreased 40% during the first academic cycle since the departure of Hawkeyes standout Caitlin Clark to the WNBA with FY25 numbers highlighting an overall decrease from $858,548 to $511,960, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams. Additionally, ticket sales plummeted by 27%, from $3,260,451 to $2,366,160, while team-specific royalties fell 21% from $470,749 to $370,408. The dip in ticket revenue will likely allow UConn ($4.25 in FY25 sales) to reclaim its position as top-earning public women’s basketball program at the gate, a distinction the program held for most of the past decade until Clark’s senior campaign. Last season with Clark gone and first-year HC Jan Jensen taking over the reins, Iowa finished 23-10 and exited the NCAA Tournament in the second round. As revenue declined, expenses followed suit. The program’s FY25 operating costs fell 17.6%, from $10.3M to $8.5M. (link)
