ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips reflects on his five years leading the conference in a Q&A with The Athletic’s Matt Baker. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On his time thus far in the big chair: “I’m really proud because as I sit here, I really believe the ACC is strong, it’s healthy and it’s well positioned for the future. This road has never been a straight line. It’s had some curves to it, like life does. But the restabilization of the league was important. Adding three institutions that have really been good for the ACC: Cal, Stanford and SMU. The ACC, I think, it’s as healthy as it’s ever been.”
➤ How has the uneven financial distribution been working? “I think things have gone well. This was basically unanimously supported by the board. If you perform well in football and basketball, you’re going to have a chance to take home a larger distribution level from the conference office. The same thing from a viewership standpoint. That’s motivated schools to invest at a higher level, to compete, to challenge themselves from a nonconference schedule — who are they going to play, when are they going to play them — to try to create really good content. So far, I’ve heard nothing but good things from our league about this. I would be surprised if other conferences don’t do some type of version of what we’ve done. I think it’s a modernization of college sports, and it’s an innovative way and creative way to distribute revenue.”
➤ As for where he sees the ACC five years from now: “I want to continue to be a conference that’s about innovation, creativity, best in class in competition, financially stable and thriving like I feel like we are right now. It’s really important for the conference to stay healthy and continue on that kind of trajectory. It’s a conference that’s been around since May 8, 1953. The significance of this conference to so many matters. That’s what we have done and continue to do each and every day, is to protect and advance the ACC, and that’s what we’ll do as we go forward. But I’m very excited about the future of the conference.” More from Phillips. (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene unveiled a five-pillar strategic plan (Student-Athlete Experience, Competitive Excellence, Engagement and Brand Management, Revenue Generation and Resource Acquisition, and Operational Excellence) for the department 15 months into his tenure, emphasizing that in the modern era, the $20.5M revenue-sharing cap effectively serves as a "floor" rather than a ceiling for programs aiming to compete for national championships. Here’s what else you need to know…
➤ Greene noted the necessity of securing "above-the-cap" NIL dollars through local business partnerships, a directive being led by Senior Assoc. AD for NIL Business Development and Strategic Partnerships Pat Bostick in a newly created vertical. Meanwhile, he notes the department is actively exploring naming rights and potential jersey patch sponsors for the upcoming season.
➤ On the facility front, Greene confirmed the $240M Victory Heights complex remains on budget but will now open for team move-ins this spring—slightly later than the original fall 2025 target—with full readiness for fall 2026.
➤ Addressing competitive performance, Greene offered a blunt assessment of the men's basketball program: “We have high expectations for our men’s basketball program, and we haven’t lived up to those expectations this year. … I’ve had conversations with [Men’s Basketball HC Jeff Capel], with our staff, including Jay Kuntz, our GM, to talk about where our gaps are and to try to figure out how we close those gaps with our peers. Ultimately, they know that we have to do better all-around with the entire program.” (link, link)

It’s “absolutely critical” that any federal law related to college sports includes a provision preventing student-athletes from being deemed employees of their school, per U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who adds that “without it, we will see enormous and irreparable damage to college sports.” In an interview with ESPN’s Dan Murphy, Cruz observed: “Congress might run out of time to act if it can't find a bipartisan solution in the coming months,” with the current divide between Republicans and Democrats over whether college student-athletes should have a future avenue for collective bargaining thus requiring them to be employees. Murphy: “Cruz and NCAA leaders say many smaller schools would not be able to afford their sports teams if athletes had to be paid and receive benefits as employees. However, as lawsuits over player contracts and eligibility rules continue to mount, a growing number of frustrated coaches and athletic directors from major programs say they are open to collective bargaining as a solution.” Asked if creating a distinction between groups of college athletes is a viable compromise for Congress, Cruz told ESPN he does not think “employment status is the answer to this problem.” More. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, who sued the NCAA to secure unlimited transfers for collegiate student-athletes now references the unrestricted transfer portal as a “train wreck” and says it is “sucking the life out of college sports,” according to USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer. Skrmetti: “I think the portal is probably the single biggest problem that needs to be solved.” Despite his overall concerns, Skrmetti doesn’t regret fighting to remove the rule and says building a system with better rules is up to college sports leaders and Congress. Skrmetti: “It's not that the NCAA got sued by states. It's that the NCAA was behaving illegally. And so just like with the NIL stuff, it was going to happen, like somebody was going to push back. And the point of the litigation is not to carve in stone the Wild West. It’s to get conclusive rulings that the old ways are broken, and it's time to start creating what the next college sports regime looks like. … I don't think we want state political figures doing that through litigation. I think it really needs to be a conversation between the coaches, the student-athletes, the conferences, the universities, the NCAA leadership, everybody who's involved in this.” More. (link)

Anchor Capital Founder and Oklahoma State club hockey board chairman Michael Mann is the driving force in advocating for OSU’s program to make the jump to Division I Men’s Hockey, per College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon, who notes “sources speculated that the total cost of adding a new program — including endowing scholarships and constructing a new arena — would likely fall in the $150M to $200M range.” Mann’s promise of a substantial donation to assist in the program’s potential move to DI is serious enough that he and OSU AD Chad Weiberg recently traveled to meet with Arizona State AD Graham Rossini and Sun Devils HC Greg Powers, as ASU remains the most recent P4 school to add the sport at the DI level. McMahon: “There are internal concerns about that price tag, and whether a single donation would be sufficient to cover the full cost. There are also potential Title IX implications that the university would have to address. … Mann is also currently involved in litigation with a former employer. … There is some smoke here, but for now, skepticism is warranted.” OSU Assoc. AD for Communications Gavin Lang: “What OSU [club] hockey has done in recent years is very impressive, but it’s premature to say that Oklahoma State will be adding ice hockey as a varsity sport.” More. Hawai’i AD Matt Elliott spoke with the Hawai’i Senate Education Committee as the department is seeking $5M in taxpayer funds for the school’s NIL pay system after more than $1.5M has already been raised for Boost the ‘Bows Fund. Key notes from the islands…
➤ “What we’ve said to our coaches is that as we raise money for NIL, you can apply that either to direct payments to the student-athletes or to increase scholarships, so it’s a strategic decision. Some teams have more scholarships than others, so they would like to add scholarships. Other teams have a lot of scholarships, so they would like to make the payments on top of the scholarships. That’s really a team-by-team decision, but you’re allowed to do both. … If we raise these dollars for NIL … and we allocate them to the individual teams, then it’s within the coach’s discretion to decade if they want to use that NIL dollar for additional scholarships for that team or to pay a student who is already receiving a scholarship on top of it.”
➤ Questioned if the $5M ask is recurring and what it will take for the money to no longer be necessary: “That’s the request for now, so that we can get to a place where we’ve established a foundation and get to a place where we think we can be competitive. We would love to be in a place in a few years where we can meet that, but that’s where we’re at for now. … If we can do that and continue to have success as teams, work on our multi-media rights, if we’re able to get a stadium where we’re able to enhance dollars that come to us from gameday operations. All the different ways we can grow revenue, new media rights contracts. In an ideal world, we’d love to be able to generate every one of those dollars within the athletics department. That’s what we aspire to do. I can’t guarantee that, but that would be the goal we set for ourselves.” (link, link, link).
➤ Meanwhile, new Aloha Stadium manager Michael Yadao says “we are a manapua away from this being done” in regard to the remaining contracts to be signed with Aloha Halawa District Partners, per Spectrum News Hawai’i’s Brian McInnis. Yadao also adds that the target for signed contracts is late February, but notes that’s aggressive. The projected finish on the project remains March 2029. (link)

Deal Corner…
➤ Michigan has inked a 10-year deal to have Levy serve as its new food and beverage provider for concessions and premium seating at Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center, Yost Ice Arena and all other on-campus Wolverine athletic venues, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes Levy secured the account over Aramark Sports + Entertainment and UM’s incumbent provider Sodexo Live. Michigan’s athletics facilities generated $15.75M in gross food and beverage receipts from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, with nearly $6M of that total going to the university, per the terms of its agreement with Sodexo Live, which operated the business (partly as Centerplate) since 2010. Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock details the "all-in" financial commitment required to land Football HC James Franklin, specifically the Board of Visitors' approval of $229.2M in additional institutional support over the next four years. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel has more…
➤ Babcock notes Franklin’s hire has spurred immediate ROI, generating over $1M in new ticket revenue within two weeks and pushing the annual scholarship fund past $18M. Babcock also confirms imminent renovations to the Merryman Center to meet Franklin's "NFL-like" standards, noting: "It’s nice when a coach comes in and says, hey, this is what I want to see, and we go, ‘OK.’ Rather than, ‘We have to go find the money.’"
➤ Babcock adds: “While I’m proud of the renovations we’ve made, they’ve been kind of piecemealed together. So, we have a vision and money, and we will start this year sooner than later, where it will look completely different. … Facilities do matter, maybe not as much in the NIL and rev-share era, but it still shows big-time commitment that something is important here, and that was at the top of [Franklin’s] list.”
➤ The department reported a $5.1M surplus on $161.2M revenue for FY25, with Babcock targeting $200M+ annually moving forward via potential jersey patches and field logos managed by Playfly Sports. (link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan joined the Hear it from Harlan podcast and discussed Football HC Morgan Scalley’s first month on the job, the hire of new Football GM Joe D’Orazio, the transfer portal window, the partnership with Otro Capital, and more. Here are the main takeaways from Harlan…
➤ On the partnership with Otro Capital (now Utah Brand Initiatives): "We still had some work to do, but it was time to get their vote to proceed. And all of that's going very, very well. In a perfect world, we're online later in the spring. ... And here's some breaking news. We had to change the name for various reasons. It's called Utah Brand Initiatives now. UBI. … I think it's going to allow us to really focus, maximize, and then when I think of something like NIL to really get to where I want us to kind of a marketing company in there that our students that want to lean in will really have an opportunity to be a part of significant campus-wide deals and other partners. And I think it's going to really allow us to leapfrog in a lot of different ways."
➤ On his preferred timing for the transfer portal window: "I think I'd like to have one portal after spring so the students come back after a tough season. Maybe they're emotional, they didn't play as much, they've had more time to think. They come back to the school, they go through spring, maybe their situation's changed, maybe it hasn't. And then they can make a good sound judgment at the end of spring. Now the fact that it gets a little close to the basketball portal makes my head want to explode. But if you're asking me right now, I'd like to see kind of a 10-day window in that springtime." (link)

St. John’s AD Ed Kull joins the Two Eras, One Storm podcast and discusses topics ranging from schedule logistics to season ticket holder concerns. Kull also sheds some light on a potential contract extension for Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino and provides an update on the Johnnies’ GM search, for which interviews have begun. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Kull addresses some of the issues with Carnesecca Arena and notes the challenge is “I wish it was bigger,” adding: “We just came back from Xavier this past weekend, and the Cintas [Center] is a beautiful spot. It’s 10K seats, probably the perfect number, and you have concerts, you can have comedy shows, you could have graduations there, you could have everything you possibly need. … The other challenge being in New York City is the cost of building, the cost of renovating, so unfortunately I think we kind of missed a little bit of the window to really build a brand new facility on campus and the expense tied to it.”
➤ Kull goes on to say: “We really need to play every single game possible at MSG that we can. Between rev share and NIL and us being part of the House settlement… we need to generate every last dollar to compete, not only in the Big East… but the football schools that are always going to have an advantage amongst us in terms of the national landscape.” Kull on Pitino: “We want him here. We want him to retire here, we want him to finish his career here. … I think keeping him here for as long as he wants to be here – him dictating the schedule is our plan and our effort.” Full podcast. Evansville AD Ziggy Siegfried recently visited the Aces on the Air podcast to discuss a number of issues, including the House settlement’s impact, the University’s financial strategy surrounding NIL and revenue sharing and more. Key nuggets…
➤ On aligning Evansville’s rev share model with other MVC schools: “I think the key for us is we know we're not going to win the battle of who spends the most money. We have to be strategic. We have to very much think about what fits UE, where do we need to be successful and we don't have many opportunities to miss. So, I think that's important to know and for us, we really want to get to about $500K for this next year, speaking about men's basketball, that would be our goal. That would get us to a point where we feel like we can be competitive. As you look at the Missouri Valley Conference, a premier mid-major conference, there are schools that are spending a lot of money around revenue sharing and NIL and we're just trying to get to the point where we feel like we can be competitive in that space.”
➤ On UE’s current timeline for reaching a goal of $500K in NIL: “We want to reach it this spring. When you look at the commitments that we need to make, most of those are going to take place in March, April, and maybe into May. So, whether it be retaining current student-athletes or recruiting new student-athletes, it's important that we have those dollars generated prior to those discussions happening. And this is also including those that we've already recruited and signed, those NIL conversations have taken place with those individuals. So there are some commitments that are kind of already on the books. … We're at about $125K. A portion of that is just being creative and how we spend scholarship dollars and stuff like that. But we also have some generous supporters who have made commitments to the rev share, which has been beneficial.” (link)
➤ Meanwhile, the Purple Aces have also announced a two-phase facility enhancement project for its softball program, transforming the former weight room at McCutchan Stadium into a dedicated clubhouse featuring a players' lounge, nutrition area, and coaches' suite in Phase 1. Phase 2 involves renovating the former baseball locker room to serve as the softball team’s new locker room, with a target move-in date of Fall 2026. The department has secured $200K+ for the initiative, with approximately $100K remaining to fully fund the project. (link)

The Arkansas Board of Trustees voted 7-3 to approve a resolution directing approximately $15M in additional annual funding to the athletic department, a move trustee Ed Fryar stated was necessary to reach the $25M roster budget coaching candidates indicated is required to compete in the SEC. The resolution mandates AD Hunter Yurachek allocate an incremental $5M annually specifically to football, while the university must identify $6M to transfer to athletics—potentially through student fees or tuition increases—and the department will retain an average of $4.4M it previously transferred back to the campus. Chancellor Charles Robinson and Yurachek told the board they had not seen the proposal until the morning of the meeting, prompting dissenting trustee Kevin Crass to criticize the process: “That’s amazing to me that the two people most impacted by this resolution have not been provided a copy of the resolution. Chair Eichler and gentlemen, that is not the way we should do business.” (link)

NIL attorney Daniel S. Greene reports that a “bill has been introduced in Hawaii to create a ‘Name, Image, and Likeness Endowment Fund’ to be managed by the U of Hawaii to compensate its athletes. Per the draft, the creation of this fund ‘is a matter of statewide concern.’ There shall be an initial corpus at least $10M.” (link)

Illinois reported record revenue of ~$195M and a surplus of nearly $5M for FY25, marking the Illini’s second consecutive year in the black. Revenue growth was driven by a $16.6M increase in Big Ten media rights distributions (to $66.8M) and a 51.3% surge in total ticket sales to a record $29.97M. Both football ($15M) and men’s basketball ($14.24M) set program records for ticket revenue, with football generating a total surplus of $38.7M. Operating expenses rose 12% to $189.9M, headlined by a spike in fundraising and marketing costs from $4.8M to $21.9M, attributed to the department purchasing student-athlete NIL rights from the former ICON collective. Conversely, direct overhead expenditures dropped by more than $9M, and team travel costs decreased 8.6%. (link)
