East Tennessee State and AD Dr. Richard Sander agreed to a contract extension retroactive to July 1, 2025, according to CollegeAD. The deal includes an annual base salary of $108,904, supplemented by a $12,500 monthly stipend for AD duties and a $6,460 monthly payment for serving as special assistant to the president. Sander can earn performance bonuses, including $10K for raising $2M annually, $2,500 per team for conference titles or postseason appearances, and $1,500 for meeting NCAA academic distribution standards. If terminated as AD without cause, Sander retains his position as Executive Director of the Global Sport Leadership Program for at least 24 months. Should he choose to resign from all roles in that scenario, he would receive a severance of one month's total salary. (link)

Additional insight from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, this time on if he feels the recent conflict with Notre Dame has been settled: “One hundred percent. … I think we both learned a few things from it. We met immediately after, within a week or so. You’ve got to reconcile differences, and you can’t be afraid to do that. It’s important to listen to what your partner has to say and (it’s) a school that means an awful lot. I feel really good about it. I have a personal connection to Notre Dame, and everybody knows that. I worked there. I had two kids graduate from there. I’m Catholic to the core. I believe in the institution. I value what Notre Dame means and what it means to the ACC and am excited about our future together.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger unpacks the question of how player buyouts impact future revenue-sharing pools under the House settlement rules, using the recent cases involving Washington QB Demond Williams and Duke-to-Miami (FL) QB Darian Mensah as case studies. Dellenger explains that if a school pays a buyout to acquire a player, that amount must be deducted from their revenue-share cap the following year. In Williams' case, the prohibitive cost—potentially $13M total when factoring in the contract value, the cap reduction for the suitor (rumored to be LSU), and the new salary—likely forced him to stay. Conversely, Mensah's settlement with Duke allowed him to transfer to Miami, but it raises complex enforcement questions: namely, if Miami uses third-party NIL or inflated revenue-share payments to reimburse Mensah for the settlement, will the College Sports Commission catch it and enforce the cap reduction? Dellenger: “Let’s leave that for another week. We only have enough strength to unclog one street at a time!” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert highlighted the department’s brand growth in 2025, driven by a football program that attracted nearly 34M viewers (+36% YoY)—ranking second in the ACC—and generated $200.4M in ad equivalency value from nearly 45B earned media impressions. Alpert noted that momentum extended to the stands, where football closed the season with three straight sellouts and record student attendance, while volleyball set a single-game crowd record of nearly 5,500. Looking ahead, the department is moving "Full Steam Ahead" with $70M in renovations to Bobby Dodd Stadium, focused entirely on modernizing the fan experience and adding premium seating by 2027. Alpert emphasized these upgrades are essential to "generating resources to continue to invest in all facets" of the department, urging fans to secure 2026 season tickets to guarantee priority access to the revamped venue. Check out some updated renderings for the project. (link)

More from East Lansing as Michigan State Trustee & former Huntington National Bank Executive SVP Sandy Pierce comments on the new Spartan Ventures effort: “The structure (of Spartan Ventures) is innovative. It's really entrepreneurial. It is the first of its kind in higher education. It will not be the last. ... Even though this is very unique, it rhymes with a lot of the professional sports investment contracts.” (link)

Utah officially opened the $39M Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, a privately funded, 3K-capacity facility that gives the baseball program its first true on-campus home after 25 years at Smith’s Ballpark. The venue features 1,200 chairback seats, a turf field, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and indoor training areas, consolidating operations previously split across three locations. Utes AD Mark Harlan: “It’s perfect for our program. I think it’s going to really lift us to places that we want to be. And frankly, it’s kind of a big missing piece that we’ve solved. They have a home here now, and we couldn’t be more excited. … I want some high school games here, I want some state championship games here. … I want to get some travel games here. I mean, we’ve got turf. We can use it, and so I think that’s going to be really, really important for us. This is a community asset." (link, link)

Toledo and Bowling Green are exploring the addition of a third annual men’s basketball game to be played as a non-conference matchup at the Huntington Center in downtown Toledo, targeting a 2027 start. While the rivals already meet twice in MAC play, ADs Bryan Blair and Derek van der Merwe view a neutral-site contest in November or December as a way to "magnify the rivalry" and drive revenue during a typically quiet portion of the college hoops calendar, according to the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs. Blair: “We’re always trying to think outside the box. There are discussions to be had about whether that makes sense or not — this idea that every year you have one game at our place, one game at their place, and…a third game at a neutral site and really celebrate this partnership. I think there’s something there.” van der Merwe adds: “This rivalry is so important to both institutions that I think finding other opportunities to capitalize on it are something we have a responsibility to explore.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports that NCAA investigators are inquiring about alleged improper contact between the Ole Miss football staff and Fresno State WR Josiah Freeman, a sixth-year senior who provided "receipts" of the communications, according to a source. This development follows Clemson HC Dabo Swinney’s public accusation that the Rebels tampered with LB Luke Ferrelli. Despite the inquiry, Canzano notes that industry confidence in enforcement remains low, and one Power 4 HC tells him: “If that doesn’t get hammered, what will? I can’t tell you of one case where the NCAA has penalized a program for tampering. People on this side of it are watching. Nobody’s got in trouble with it. Tampering is not even a major infraction. Until they give someone a two-year recruiting ban and a ‘show-cause’ penalty, there’s no consequence.” Canzano ultimately asks: “What are we doing here? Pretending there are rules? The NCAA may decide to throw the book at Mississippi. But I fear it may just give Rebels a dirty look and call it good.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner investigates whether college football's record-breaking viewership in 2025-26—highlighted by a 36% surge for the College Football Playoff title game to 30.1M viewers—is driven by genuine growth or Nielsen’s expanded Out-of-Home (OOH) measurement, which now captures 100% of the country (up from 60%). ESPN SVP Flora Kelly confirms the new system finally includes "college towns" and sports bars in smaller markets that were previously unmeasured, a shift that "right-sized" data for a sport that over-indexes in those areas. Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes warns that the ratings boom is “not just organic growth. The Out-of-Home (system) is a strong factor. … The measurement changes have benefitted college football the most because it’s what people leave their homes to watch.” Still, Kelly insists that even without the methodology enhancements, ESPN would have still recorded its highest ratings since 2011. Ultimately, Crakes concludes: “We’ll know next year. We’ll have an apples-to-apples situation (with the Out-of-Home data) to see how much of the growth is organic.” (link)

The NCAA and the city of Columbus have unveiled the 2027 Women’s Final Four logo, highlighting iconic features and colors characteristic of the city. Designed by Section 127 out of Indianapolis, the logo pays homage to the Columbus flag, through its use of blue and yellow, while the holding shape and arch at the top of the logo are nods to the streetcar arches that grant Columbus the nickname "Arch City." Featuring the city name, the bottom arch is inspired by the Short North neighborhood's iconic steel arches. Lastly, the “brackets and national championship trophy capture the relentless pursuit, determination and triumph that define each team's journey for a national championship.” (link)

Virginia Tech football student-athlete Kemari Copeland goes into detail about how tampering works and explains that one specific school “kept tampering” by having coaches and/or staff members contacting him. “I kind of brushed it aside… I’m still trying to play good in the season, there’s just a bunch of stuff going on.” Copeland explains that during a Week 8 matchup against Louisville, he noticed what he believed was a recruiter for the tampering school evaluating him – while wearing a logo depicting said school. He acknowledges: “I could be tripping, but there’s no way a fan would wear that logo to a Virginia Tech game and sit right in front.” Copeland goes on to share a text he says he received a couple days later from an unknown sender offering a “minimum” (redacted amount) of money to enter the portal. “This happens to all the good players.” Check out the video. LSU has implemented a policy stripping students of their basketball season ticket privileges for the remainder of the year if they scan into the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for a promotional giveaway but leave prior to tipoff. First utilized for the Kentucky men's basketball game, the protocol requires early-departing students to be "exit scanned," and Tigers Director of Fan Experience Kelsey Dulinski explains the ‘policy is intended to ensure giveaways are rewarded to students and fans who are genuinely there to support the team. The goal is to prevent individuals from collecting giveaway items and leaving before the game begins, and instead reward fans who arrive early, stay and actively cheer on the Tigers.” Dulinski adds: “The increased popularity and improved design of recent giveaways have led to a noticeable rise in students leaving immediately after receiving items. This policy helps ensure giveaways reach fans who are staying to support the team.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips reflects on his five years leading the conference in a Q&A with The Athletic’s Matt Baker. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On his time thus far in the big chair: “I’m really proud because as I sit here, I really believe the ACC is strong, it’s healthy and it’s well positioned for the future. This road has never been a straight line. It’s had some curves to it, like life does. But the restabilization of the league was important. Adding three institutions that have really been good for the ACC: Cal, Stanford and SMU. The ACC, I think, it’s as healthy as it’s ever been.”
➤ How has the uneven financial distribution been working? “I think things have gone well. This was basically unanimously supported by the board. If you perform well in football and basketball, you’re going to have a chance to take home a larger distribution level from the conference office. The same thing from a viewership standpoint. That’s motivated schools to invest at a higher level, to compete, to challenge themselves from a nonconference schedule — who are they going to play, when are they going to play them — to try to create really good content. So far, I’ve heard nothing but good things from our league about this. I would be surprised if other conferences don’t do some type of version of what we’ve done. I think it’s a modernization of college sports, and it’s an innovative way and creative way to distribute revenue.”
➤ As for where he sees the ACC five years from now: “I want to continue to be a conference that’s about innovation, creativity, best in class in competition, financially stable and thriving like I feel like we are right now. It’s really important for the conference to stay healthy and continue on that kind of trajectory. It’s a conference that’s been around since May 8, 1953. The significance of this conference to so many matters. That’s what we have done and continue to do each and every day, is to protect and advance the ACC, and that’s what we’ll do as we go forward. But I’m very excited about the future of the conference.” More from Phillips. (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene unveiled a five-pillar strategic plan (Student-Athlete Experience, Competitive Excellence, Engagement and Brand Management, Revenue Generation and Resource Acquisition, and Operational Excellence) for the department 15 months into his tenure, emphasizing that in the modern era, the $20.5M revenue-sharing cap effectively serves as a "floor" rather than a ceiling for programs aiming to compete for national championships. Here’s what else you need to know…
➤ Greene noted the necessity of securing "above-the-cap" NIL dollars through local business partnerships, a directive being led by Senior Assoc. AD for NIL Business Development and Strategic Partnerships Pat Bostick in a newly created vertical. Meanwhile, he notes the department is actively exploring naming rights and potential jersey patch sponsors for the upcoming season.
➤ On the facility front, Greene confirmed the $240M Victory Heights complex remains on budget but will now open for team move-ins this spring—slightly later than the original fall 2025 target—with full readiness for fall 2026.
➤ Addressing competitive performance, Greene offered a blunt assessment of the men's basketball program: “We have high expectations for our men’s basketball program, and we haven’t lived up to those expectations this year. … I’ve had conversations with [Men’s Basketball HC Jeff Capel], with our staff, including Jay Kuntz, our GM, to talk about where our gaps are and to try to figure out how we close those gaps with our peers. Ultimately, they know that we have to do better all-around with the entire program.” (link, link)

It’s “absolutely critical” that any federal law related to college sports includes a provision preventing student-athletes from being deemed employees of their school, per U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who adds that “without it, we will see enormous and irreparable damage to college sports.” In an interview with ESPN’s Dan Murphy, Cruz observed: “Congress might run out of time to act if it can't find a bipartisan solution in the coming months,” with the current divide between Republicans and Democrats over whether college student-athletes should have a future avenue for collective bargaining thus requiring them to be employees. Murphy: “Cruz and NCAA leaders say many smaller schools would not be able to afford their sports teams if athletes had to be paid and receive benefits as employees. However, as lawsuits over player contracts and eligibility rules continue to mount, a growing number of frustrated coaches and athletic directors from major programs say they are open to collective bargaining as a solution.” Asked if creating a distinction between groups of college athletes is a viable compromise for Congress, Cruz told ESPN he does not think “employment status is the answer to this problem.” More. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, who sued the NCAA to secure unlimited transfers for collegiate student-athletes now references the unrestricted transfer portal as a “train wreck” and says it is “sucking the life out of college sports,” according to USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer. Skrmetti: “I think the portal is probably the single biggest problem that needs to be solved.” Despite his overall concerns, Skrmetti doesn’t regret fighting to remove the rule and says building a system with better rules is up to college sports leaders and Congress. Skrmetti: “It's not that the NCAA got sued by states. It's that the NCAA was behaving illegally. And so just like with the NIL stuff, it was going to happen, like somebody was going to push back. And the point of the litigation is not to carve in stone the Wild West. It’s to get conclusive rulings that the old ways are broken, and it's time to start creating what the next college sports regime looks like. … I don't think we want state political figures doing that through litigation. I think it really needs to be a conversation between the coaches, the student-athletes, the conferences, the universities, the NCAA leadership, everybody who's involved in this.” More. (link)

Anchor Capital Founder and Oklahoma State club hockey board chairman Michael Mann is the driving force in advocating for OSU’s program to make the jump to Division I Men’s Hockey, per College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon, who notes “sources speculated that the total cost of adding a new program — including endowing scholarships and constructing a new arena — would likely fall in the $150M to $200M range.” Mann’s promise of a substantial donation to assist in the program’s potential move to DI is serious enough that he and OSU AD Chad Weiberg recently traveled to meet with Arizona State AD Graham Rossini and Sun Devils HC Greg Powers, as ASU remains the most recent P4 school to add the sport at the DI level. McMahon: “There are internal concerns about that price tag, and whether a single donation would be sufficient to cover the full cost. There are also potential Title IX implications that the university would have to address. … Mann is also currently involved in litigation with a former employer. … There is some smoke here, but for now, skepticism is warranted.” OSU Assoc. AD for Communications Gavin Lang: “What OSU [club] hockey has done in recent years is very impressive, but it’s premature to say that Oklahoma State will be adding ice hockey as a varsity sport.” More. Hawai’i AD Matt Elliott spoke with the Hawai’i Senate Education Committee as the department is seeking $5M in taxpayer funds for the school’s NIL pay system after more than $1.5M has already been raised for Boost the ‘Bows Fund. Key notes from the islands…
➤ “What we’ve said to our coaches is that as we raise money for NIL, you can apply that either to direct payments to the student-athletes or to increase scholarships, so it’s a strategic decision. Some teams have more scholarships than others, so they would like to add scholarships. Other teams have a lot of scholarships, so they would like to make the payments on top of the scholarships. That’s really a team-by-team decision, but you’re allowed to do both. … If we raise these dollars for NIL … and we allocate them to the individual teams, then it’s within the coach’s discretion to decade if they want to use that NIL dollar for additional scholarships for that team or to pay a student who is already receiving a scholarship on top of it.”
➤ Questioned if the $5M ask is recurring and what it will take for the money to no longer be necessary: “That’s the request for now, so that we can get to a place where we’ve established a foundation and get to a place where we think we can be competitive. We would love to be in a place in a few years where we can meet that, but that’s where we’re at for now. … If we can do that and continue to have success as teams, work on our multi-media rights, if we’re able to get a stadium where we’re able to enhance dollars that come to us from gameday operations. All the different ways we can grow revenue, new media rights contracts. In an ideal world, we’d love to be able to generate every one of those dollars within the athletics department. That’s what we aspire to do. I can’t guarantee that, but that would be the goal we set for ourselves.” (link, link, link).
➤ Meanwhile, new Aloha Stadium manager Michael Yadao says “we are a manapua away from this being done” in regard to the remaining contracts to be signed with Aloha Halawa District Partners, per Spectrum News Hawai’i’s Brian McInnis. Yadao also adds that the target for signed contracts is late February, but notes that’s aggressive. The projected finish on the project remains March 2029. (link)

Deal Corner… ➤ Michigan has inked a 10-year deal to have Levy serve as its new food and beverage provider for concessions and premium seating at Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center, Yost Ice Arena and all other on-campus Wolverine athletic venues, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes Levy secured the account over Aramark Sports + Entertainment and UM’s incumbent provider Sodexo Live. Michigan’s athletics facilities generated $15.75M in gross food and beverage receipts from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, with nearly $6M of that total going to the university, per the terms of its agreement with Sodexo Live, which operated the business (partly as Centerplate) since 2010. (link) ➤ Eastern Illinois partners with Teamworks Influencer to launch the EIU Panther Exchange to expand NIL opportunities and strengthen connections between Panther student-athletes and businesses, brands and fans.
