President Laura Carlson: “UD’s athletics and recreation programs are a foundational component of our educational mission. Through sports, we learn the value of mastering skills, building self-esteem, setting goals, collaborating as a team, persisting through adversity and so much more – all of which form the basis of lifelong lessons. During a recent virtual meeting with Kansas lawmakers, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark weighed in on numerous college sports issues, including revenue sharing, enforcement and the transfer portal. Here are some of Yormark’s most notable comments…
➤ Yormark: “We have challenges in collegiate athletics, but I see opportunities alongside those challenges. All industries have challenges, but ... I don't think there's been a better time than right now to be part of the Big 12. I love our trajectory. I love working with our ADs and our board. I think the best days ahead are certainly in front of us for the Big 12.”
➤ On the topic of contractual relationships between schools and student-athletes and the portal: “We are thinking about creating a uniform rev contract led by the conference on a go-forward basis, just given some of the things that we've heard and seen play out publicly, where student-athletes sign on a Monday and they decide to go somewhere else on a Friday. As far as I'm concerned, it's only one person's opinion, that's unacceptable to me. The bigger issue ... is the portal. We've got to slow down the portal, and we've got to protect our student athletes from themselves. Every time they go in the portal, about 40% of those student athletes don't end up anywhere, and many of the student athletes that do transfer lose their credits.”
➤ As for enforcement, Yormark mentioned he is working closely with other Power 4 commissioners "on making sure that not only do we have rules in the system, but that we are enforcing them." Yormark adds: “I'd love to sit here today and tell you every school is playing by the same rules, but I can't. And it's my job and the NCAA's job and the CSC's job to make sure that we are all living by the same rules. And that those that do not live by the rules, there's consequences to pay, and that's where enforcement comes into play.” (link)

Oklahoma’s Board of Regents officially approved new AD Roger Denny’s contract on Friday. The four-year deal, which begins Feb. 15 and runs through June 30, 2030, boasts an annual salary of $1.25M for a total value of $5M, comparable to that of his predecessor Joe Castiglione, who earned a base pay of $450K as part of total annual compensation of $1.93M. Per Sportico, Denny’s annual compensation currently rates 20th among current FBS ADs. Denny can also “earn merit-based salary raises beginning in July 2027,” while a term sheet also stipulated that starting with the new fiscal year on July 1, he will be eligible for performance bonuses based on "academic achievement of university student-athletes, achievement of university teams and meeting and exceeding athletics department revenue and net cash flow/operating income long range goals.” The bonus structure and any set raises were not announced. Additionally, the board also approved a new title for Castiglione as Emeritus AD starting Feb. 15. (link, link, link, link)

Ohio State brought in an athletic department record $336.1M in revenue against $320.4M in expenses during FY25 for a surplus of $15.7M, according to Eleven Warriors’ Andy Anders, who notes the revenue total broke the Buckeyes’ previous mark of $279.5M set in FY23. OSU managed an extra $22.9M from football ticket sales alone in FY25 and brought in a record $68.2M in donor-funded contributions, up from $52.5M the previous year, while media rights revenues from television and radio also increased from $52.8M to $64.9M in year two of the Big Ten's seven-year, $7B media rights deal with FOX, CBS and NBC. AD Ross Bjork: “As the collegiate athletics model continues to evolve, successfully navigating the financial landscape is a must and I am proud of everyone within our program who made last year a success. While there will be continued challenges to our economic model, we will strive to be best in class by continuing to innovate and stay aggressive in generating new revenue streams while also managing our expenses as soundly as possible.” (link)

The $56M budget gap between college sports’ top two FY25 spenders, Texas ($376M) and Ohio State ($320M), is “bigger than the entire FY24 budgets of 37 public FBS schools,” per Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, who observes that includes departments such as Charlotte ($54M), New Mexico ($54M), Nevada ($53.9M), Wyoming ($53.6M), North Texas ($53.2M) and more. Cincinnati athletics revenue soared 23% to top the $100M mark for the first time in department history at $118.5M for FY25, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier’s Steve Watkins, who adds that some of the revenue gains are a bit misleading with $13M of a $22M increase due to money UC provides to the athletic department called “direct institutional support” that “can include money to cover debt service, pay for general operations or numerous other uses.” Excluding university support, revenue still rose 14% ($8M) with much of that coming via a boost in fundraising from $4.7M to $17.4M, while sponsorship sales improved $2.3M to a total of $6.8M. Expenses also jumped, rising 13% YoY to $119.3M, reflecting “the cost of doing business in the changing college sports climate, with costs rising further in the current year.” UC’s revenue will likely take another step forward in the current year, which ends in June and will be reported in January, as the school will begin receiving its full share from the Big 12, likely to be around $36M. Utah State’s upcoming move to the new Pac-12 is expected to provide a jump beyond the $3.5M annually per year in league media rights payouts offered via the Mountain West, but according to Aggies AD Cameron Walker, who didn’t disclose any specific figures, the dollar amounts might not be on the high end of estimates rumored to run between $8-15M per year. Walker: “The few years in the (media deal) are a little lean. Not worse than where we were, but a little leaner than maybe we anticipated.” Per Cache Valley Daily’s Jason Walker, “although the payout from the media deal is less than what was hoped for, the trade-off for the smaller dollar amount is that Pac-12 schools will have most of their football and men's basketball games played on networks that reach effectively 100% of households in the United States” with a minimum of around 160 games between football, men's basketball and women's basketball slated for broadcast on CBS, The CW or USA Network. Walker: “The key to the (Pac-12) is the growth and the opportunities for growth. And there's just tremendous upside, what it will do for our brand and sponsors. When all of our games are on linear television for football and men's basketball, that's impactful on what that means for sponsorship and revenue opportunities. So I think there's a lot of opportunity moving forward in the Pac-12.” More. (link)

North Texas football season ticket renewals are up more than 25% and the school currently has more than 350 new season ticket deposits and over 100 new accounts from its push to sell 10K season tickets for the upcoming 2026 Mean Green gridiron campaign. Per the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito, UNT is set to reach a key point in its ticket drive as today marks the deadline for fans to lock in ticket prices for the 2027 season by putting down a deposit or renewing early for 2026. Vito: “The school has raised season ticket prices in recent years and acknowledged that it will likely boost them again in 2027, when UNT will play seven home games. The Mean Green are set to host Texas Tech on Sept. 11, 2027, in what will be one of the highest-profile home games played in DATCU [Stadium] since it opened in 2011.” (link)

East Tennessee State and AD Dr. Richard Sander agreed to a contract extension retroactive to July 1, 2025, according to CollegeAD. The deal includes an annual base salary of $108,904, supplemented by a $12,500 monthly stipend for AD duties and a $6,460 monthly payment for serving as special assistant to the president. Sander can earn performance bonuses, including $10K for raising $2M annually, $2,500 per team for conference titles or postseason appearances, and $1,500 for meeting NCAA academic distribution standards. If terminated as AD without cause, Sander retains his position as Executive Director of the Global Sport Leadership Program for at least 24 months. Should he choose to resign from all roles in that scenario, he would receive a severance of one month's total salary. (link)

Additional insight from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, this time on if he feels the recent conflict with Notre Dame has been settled: “One hundred percent. … I think we both learned a few things from it. We met immediately after, within a week or so. You’ve got to reconcile differences, and you can’t be afraid to do that. It’s important to listen to what your partner has to say and (it’s) a school that means an awful lot. I feel really good about it. I have a personal connection to Notre Dame, and everybody knows that. I worked there. I had two kids graduate from there. I’m Catholic to the core. I believe in the institution. I value what Notre Dame means and what it means to the ACC and am excited about our future together.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger unpacks the question of how player buyouts impact future revenue-sharing pools under the House settlement rules, using the recent cases involving Washington QB Demond Williams and Duke-to-Miami (FL) QB Darian Mensah as case studies. Dellenger explains that if a school pays a buyout to acquire a player, that amount must be deducted from their revenue-share cap the following year. In Williams' case, the prohibitive cost—potentially $13M total when factoring in the contract value, the cap reduction for the suitor (rumored to be LSU), and the new salary—likely forced him to stay. Conversely, Mensah's settlement with Duke allowed him to transfer to Miami, but it raises complex enforcement questions: namely, if Miami uses third-party NIL or inflated revenue-share payments to reimburse Mensah for the settlement, will the College Sports Commission catch it and enforce the cap reduction? Dellenger: “Let’s leave that for another week. We only have enough strength to unclog one street at a time!” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert highlighted the department’s brand growth in 2025, driven by a football program that attracted nearly 34M viewers (+36% YoY)—ranking second in the ACC—and generated $200.4M in ad equivalency value from nearly 45B earned media impressions. Alpert noted that momentum extended to the stands, where football closed the season with three straight sellouts and record student attendance, while volleyball set a single-game crowd record of nearly 5,500. Looking ahead, the department is moving "Full Steam Ahead" with $70M in renovations to Bobby Dodd Stadium, focused entirely on modernizing the fan experience and adding premium seating by 2027. Alpert emphasized these upgrades are essential to "generating resources to continue to invest in all facets" of the department, urging fans to secure 2026 season tickets to guarantee priority access to the revamped venue. Check out some updated renderings for the project. (link)

More from East Lansing as Michigan State Trustee & former Huntington National Bank Executive SVP Sandy Pierce comments on the new Spartan Ventures effort: “The structure (of Spartan Ventures) is innovative. It's really entrepreneurial. It is the first of its kind in higher education. It will not be the last. ... Even though this is very unique, it rhymes with a lot of the professional sports investment contracts.” (link)

Utah officially opened the $39M Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, a privately funded, 3K-capacity facility that gives the baseball program its first true on-campus home after 25 years at Smith’s Ballpark. The venue features 1,200 chairback seats, a turf field, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and indoor training areas, consolidating operations previously split across three locations. Utes AD Mark Harlan: “It’s perfect for our program. I think it’s going to really lift us to places that we want to be. And frankly, it’s kind of a big missing piece that we’ve solved. They have a home here now, and we couldn’t be more excited. … I want some high school games here, I want some state championship games here. … I want to get some travel games here. I mean, we’ve got turf. We can use it, and so I think that’s going to be really, really important for us. This is a community asset." (link, link)

Toledo and Bowling Green are exploring the addition of a third annual men’s basketball game to be played as a non-conference matchup at the Huntington Center in downtown Toledo, targeting a 2027 start. While the rivals already meet twice in MAC play, ADs Bryan Blair and Derek van der Merwe view a neutral-site contest in November or December as a way to "magnify the rivalry" and drive revenue during a typically quiet portion of the college hoops calendar, according to the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs. Blair: “We’re always trying to think outside the box. There are discussions to be had about whether that makes sense or not — this idea that every year you have one game at our place, one game at their place, and…a third game at a neutral site and really celebrate this partnership. I think there’s something there.” van der Merwe adds: “This rivalry is so important to both institutions that I think finding other opportunities to capitalize on it are something we have a responsibility to explore.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports that NCAA investigators are inquiring about alleged improper contact between the Ole Miss football staff and Fresno State WR Josiah Freeman, a sixth-year senior who provided "receipts" of the communications, according to a source. This development follows Clemson HC Dabo Swinney’s public accusation that the Rebels tampered with LB Luke Ferrelli. Despite the inquiry, Canzano notes that industry confidence in enforcement remains low, and one Power 4 HC tells him: “If that doesn’t get hammered, what will? I can’t tell you of one case where the NCAA has penalized a program for tampering. People on this side of it are watching. Nobody’s got in trouble with it. Tampering is not even a major infraction. Until they give someone a two-year recruiting ban and a ‘show-cause’ penalty, there’s no consequence.” Canzano ultimately asks: “What are we doing here? Pretending there are rules? The NCAA may decide to throw the book at Mississippi. But I fear it may just give Rebels a dirty look and call it good.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner investigates whether college football's record-breaking viewership in 2025-26—highlighted by a 36% surge for the College Football Playoff title game to 30.1M viewers—is driven by genuine growth or Nielsen’s expanded Out-of-Home (OOH) measurement, which now captures 100% of the country (up from 60%). ESPN SVP Flora Kelly confirms the new system finally includes "college towns" and sports bars in smaller markets that were previously unmeasured, a shift that "right-sized" data for a sport that over-indexes in those areas. Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes warns that the ratings boom is “not just organic growth. The Out-of-Home (system) is a strong factor. … The measurement changes have benefitted college football the most because it’s what people leave their homes to watch.” Still, Kelly insists that even without the methodology enhancements, ESPN would have still recorded its highest ratings since 2011. Ultimately, Crakes concludes: “We’ll know next year. We’ll have an apples-to-apples situation (with the Out-of-Home data) to see how much of the growth is organic.” (link)

The NCAA and the city of Columbus have unveiled the 2027 Women’s Final Four logo, highlighting iconic features and colors characteristic of the city. Designed by Section 127 out of Indianapolis, the logo pays homage to the Columbus flag, through its use of blue and yellow, while the holding shape and arch at the top of the logo are nods to the streetcar arches that grant Columbus the nickname "Arch City." Featuring the city name, the bottom arch is inspired by the Short North neighborhood's iconic steel arches. Lastly, the “brackets and national championship trophy capture the relentless pursuit, determination and triumph that define each team's journey for a national championship.” (link)

Virginia Tech football student-athlete Kemari Copeland goes into detail about how tampering works and explains that one specific school “kept tampering” by having coaches and/or staff members contacting him. “I kind of brushed it aside… I’m still trying to play good in the season, there’s just a bunch of stuff going on.” Copeland explains that during a Week 8 matchup against Louisville, he noticed what he believed was a recruiter for the tampering school evaluating him – while wearing a logo depicting said school. He acknowledges: “I could be tripping, but there’s no way a fan would wear that logo to a Virginia Tech game and sit right in front.” Copeland goes on to share a text he says he received a couple days later from an unknown sender offering a “minimum” (redacted amount) of money to enter the portal. “This happens to all the good players.” Check out the video. LSU has implemented a policy stripping students of their basketball season ticket privileges for the remainder of the year if they scan into the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for a promotional giveaway but leave prior to tipoff. First utilized for the Kentucky men's basketball game, the protocol requires early-departing students to be "exit scanned," and Tigers Director of Fan Experience Kelsey Dulinski explains the ‘policy is intended to ensure giveaways are rewarded to students and fans who are genuinely there to support the team. The goal is to prevent individuals from collecting giveaway items and leaving before the game begins, and instead reward fans who arrive early, stay and actively cheer on the Tigers.” Dulinski adds: “The increased popularity and improved design of recent giveaways have led to a noticeable rise in students leaving immediately after receiving items. This policy helps ensure giveaways reach fans who are staying to support the team.” (link)
