Former UCLA Men’s Basketball student-athlete Amari Bailey, who was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 2023 & ended up playing in 10 NBA games, wants to bring his talents back to the collegiate ranks. Bailey: “Right now I'd be a senior in college. I'm not trying to be 27 years old playing college athletics. No shade to the guys that do; that's their journey. But I went to go play professionally and learned a lot, went through a lot. So, like, why not me? … It's not a stunt. I'm really serious about going back. I just want to improve my game, change the perception of me and just show that I can win.” NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley reiterates players who signed an NBA contract will not be granted eligibility. The Athletic’s Matt Baker & Ralph Russo report the College Sports Commission has opened an inquiry into potential violations connected to NIL deals & student-athlete compensation at LSU. Notably, the probe is not centered on the Tigers’ football program. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds more context: “Several college programs - at least one in the Big Ten and one in the Big 12 in addition to LSU - have received letters of inquiry from the CSC over last few weeks over athletes not reporting NIL deals. Some have already been resolved thru communications with CSC officials.” (link, link, link)

Lots of action from Athens as Georgia President Jere Morehead went on the offensive yesterday by saying the SEC may move to regulate rules - such as transfer portal tampering - as a conference function & not rely on the NCAA or CSC. Here’s more…
➤ Morehead says he has the support of a handful of other SEC CEOs, adds: ”Have we seen the CSC move against any institution yet? I don’t think so. Have we seen the NCAA take any action on tampering? I don’t think so. So I think we’re getting to the point that the Southeastern Conference is going to have to create its own set of rules, enforce them against our members, and hope that we can set an example that the other Power 4 conferences would then follow. But we desperately need rules, and rules that are going to be enforced. We have rules, but they’re not being enforced.”
➤ More from Morehead: “What’s the risk? That we’re going to have a great, orderly conference where we’re all working together, and everyone else is in chaos? Does that really put us in a bad position? I don’t know. Maybe it puts us in a better position to have less chaos, because right now we have chaos, and we’re still waiting for someone to enforce the House settlement, and for someone to enforce the NCAA tampering rules.” (link)
➤ When might a corporate jersey patch appear on a UGA uniform? Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “It's something we're going to take a look at. But we're Georgia, we do things a certain way. We take pride and we love our partnerships with our key partners. It's got to be the right fit for us. It's got to make sense. We're not just out there chasing dollars for the sake of chasing dollars. We want to do it the right way.” (link)
➤ And how about the potential of the Dawgs adding Women’s Flag Football? Brooks: “I think it's something you have to keep an eye on. Obviously, a lot of athletic departments right now are challenged just to meet the needs of their current number of sports, but I do see that as something that's going to be a lot of growth in that area. A lot of popularity, especially in the state of Georgia.” (link)

St. John’s AD Ed Kull joins Steph Garcia Cichosz on the One Question Leadership Podcast and covers topics ranging from the future of Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino to the evolution of athletic department org charts. Here’s Kull in his own words…
➤ On the reality of student-athlete earnings: "Coach Pitino has a quote that he's said… 'Are we doing a service to student-athletes, where for many of them, this is the largest amount of money they will ever make?' And that's just a scary comment to think that when their professional career begins… they won't make about the same amount of money they're making now."
➤ What will athletic departments look like in the future? "I guess a little bit of that Kentucky model where they created now that LLC and kind of a for-profit entity separate from the school… I'm very much intrigued by that because I think that model is the direction we're going in, that for-profit professional sports model. ... You can't continue to go back… to your board of trustees or your state government or your president asking for more and more money or more and more brick and mortar."
➤ Fundraising as the primary job function for an AD: "It's definitely the priority and lead role of my job on a daily basis. It probably does not show up in my job description… but it's definitely my everyday lead.” (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor joins Senior Director of Broadcast Services Brian Smoller for the latest edition of Ask the AD. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Taylor on new Football HC Collin Klein and the commitment from the department to the new staff: “We gave him some numbers in which to work with from a staff that was certainly, you know, a little bit more than we had in the past. But you know, he's been really good about managing that and making sure he stays within that number, and then coming up with other ideas.”
➤ As for his trip to Topeka with Kansas AD Travis Goff and Wichita State AD Kevin Saal: “It's really, was more about education, about kind of where college athletics is and and really talk about the economic impact all three schools have in the state. We had a company called Tripp Umbach do an economic impact study of all three schools. And the one number that stands out to me that we presented to the joint session of the Commerce Department of the Senate and the House was we bring $1.55B of revenue to the state in the three schools, which is a very big number. And we just wanted to let them know that we are a valuable asset to the state as we kind of go through the challenges of the financial challenges of our new world, of the $20.5M. That they may need to consider helping us as other states across the country are helping their athletic programs. It's a challenge, and I understand that, but it was really more of a 'hey, this is where the world is in college athletics today, but yet, remember that we are an economic impact driver to the state, not just KU or K-State, but Wichita State. And collectively, what we bring to the state and our various communities is a pretty big number.'”
➤ As far as jersey patches, Taylor: “The jersey patches, finally got approved from the administrative cabinet. Now it goes to the sport oversight committees to figure out where those patches will go.” More. (link)

The OU Daily’s Anusha Fathepure indicates that Oklahoma hired new AD Roger Denny in part to spearhead the stalled Rock Creek Entertainment District project, citing his previous legal work on Ballpark Village in St. Louis. Denny this week emphasized the resilience required for such developments, stating: "Big projects like that aren't easy, and a lot of them fall apart just because of the fatigue that comes with them." Denny also referred to his Ballpark Village experience and explained: “Ultimately, what I saw in that deal… the thing I learned from that is that you just have to keep plugging away at it and plugging away at it every time it turns, and you think the deal might be falling apart, we'll stay in the fight longer than anyone.” The $1B proposed district, which would include a new arena for basketball and gymnastics, faces hurdles as the Oklahoma Supreme Court reviews a petition challenging its tax increment financing (TIF) model. While the Norman City Council approved the plan 5-4 last September, President Joseph Harroz Jr. has warned that if local approval fails, the university will look to other cities like Oklahoma City or Moore to build the facility. The latest edition of CRO.ticker includes some potential foreshadowing about what a Power 4 breakaway could look like, as Bloomberg’s David Hellier points out that for the first time in 29 years, no English Premier League club cracked the top four of the Deloitte Football Money League. LCP Principal Ashley Mould posits the league's increased competitiveness is partly to blame: While continental giants like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG benefit from consistent domestic dominance that guarantees lucrative Champions League participation, English clubs face a fiercer internal battle that can result in significant revenue swings based on on-pitch performance. Also in this edition: C-suite hiring trends, why Nike and Under Armour are investing in high school sports, Ro’s rationale for spending big on a Super Bowl ad and more. (link)

Kennesaw State Men’s Basketball HC Antoine Pettway remarks on the point shaving allegations against MBB student-athlete Simeon Cottle, who was charged earlier this month with intentionally underperforming in exchange for money. Pettway on the scheme’s ringleaders: “You're being a predator online and you're reaching out to them, getting these dudes to mess up. Because there's a lot of dudes on that list that you feel bad for, that they've got a long road ahead of them because, in the dark, a grown-up reached out to them and led them down the wrong path. … I think something needs to be done about these predators that are reaching out to these young dudes in college basketball who don't have a lot and dangle this money in front of their faces." Sports Illustrated’s Maren Angus-Coombs examines how Texas Tech Softball HC Gerry Glasco leveraged The Matador Club to orchestrate a massive roster overhaul aimed at winning a national championship, highlighted by last year’s addition of former Stanford star pitcher NiJaree Canady. Glasco explains that the collective “had lawyers advising us, and the advice to me was to go coach softball. Stay out of it, don't contact anyone, you've got to go quiet. They'd handle building the roster for us." The strategy, which reportedly involved six-figure NIL offers to players still on other rosters (including transfers from Florida, Tennessee, and UCLA), drew veiled criticism from Tennessee HC Karen Weekly, who tweeted: "Contacting players… before their season ends and signing them to NIL deals before they enter the portal is wrong." Glasco, however, praised the organization's efficiency: "I think it's a school that has a fan base, an alumni base, and then an athletic base that wants to win. They have boosters that are big fans who graduated from here, and they're putting money into every program we have. They're extremely organized, they're extremely up-to-date. What they're doing with lawyers is amazing." (link)

Syracuse Women’s Basketball HC Felisha Legette-Jack believes the program’s ability to sustain its recent resurgence depends on increased financial support to compensate players, per Syracuse.com’s Justin Girshon. Legette-Jack: “No matter how much I passionately say it, if you guys in this community don’t support me and help me financially get behind what I’m trying to create here — for the love of this great university in this great city — it’s not even going to be possible for even me to continue at this level. We need more help. … We are getting money taken away from us, but this community is one of the richest communities in the country. How do I know? Because I did my work, we have about 37 billionaires in the surrounding area. We have over 80 millionaires right here in the crevice of a 500-mile radius. All we’re asking for is for you to see what we’re trying to do. … I need this community to understand, I cannot continue to just be this face that speaks it out. They’re not even gonna open the door if you don’t have the (revenue) share and you don’t have the NIL money. … All we’re asking for is you to see what we’re trying to do. See that we’re 3.362 overall GPA. See the character and the display when you see the commercials of Syracuse women’s basketball, and then see the results on the basketball court. If we can really, honestly, say that is great stuff, prove it.” (link)

Delaware removes the interim tag from AD Jordan Skolnick, who has been leading the Blue Hens since March. President Laura Carlson: “UD’s athletics and recreation programs are a foundational component of our educational mission. Through sports, we learn the value of mastering skills, building self-esteem, setting goals, collaborating as a team, persisting through adversity and so much more – all of which form the basis of lifelong lessons. These are skills that foster excellence not only in competition but also in the classroom and beyond. Jordan shares my commitment to this transformative power of sports, and I look forward to our work on behalf of all Blue Hens.” (link)

During a recent virtual meeting with Kansas lawmakers, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark weighed in on numerous college sports issues, including revenue sharing, enforcement and the transfer portal. Here are some of Yormark’s most notable comments…
➤ Yormark: “We have challenges in collegiate athletics, but I see opportunities alongside those challenges. All industries have challenges, but ... I don't think there's been a better time than right now to be part of the Big 12. I love our trajectory. I love working with our ADs and our board. I think the best days ahead are certainly in front of us for the Big 12.”
➤ On the topic of contractual relationships between schools and student-athletes and the portal: “We are thinking about creating a uniform rev contract led by the conference on a go-forward basis, just given some of the things that we've heard and seen play out publicly, where student-athletes sign on a Monday and they decide to go somewhere else on a Friday. As far as I'm concerned, it's only one person's opinion, that's unacceptable to me. The bigger issue ... is the portal. We've got to slow down the portal, and we've got to protect our student athletes from themselves. Every time they go in the portal, about 40% of those student athletes don't end up anywhere, and many of the student athletes that do transfer lose their credits.”
➤ As for enforcement, Yormark mentioned he is working closely with other Power 4 commissioners "on making sure that not only do we have rules in the system, but that we are enforcing them." Yormark adds: “I'd love to sit here today and tell you every school is playing by the same rules, but I can't. And it's my job and the NCAA's job and the CSC's job to make sure that we are all living by the same rules. And that those that do not live by the rules, there's consequences to pay, and that's where enforcement comes into play.” (link)

Oklahoma’s Board of Regents officially approved new AD Roger Denny’s contract on Friday. The four-year deal, which begins Feb. 15 and runs through June 30, 2030, boasts an annual salary of $1.25M for a total value of $5M, comparable to that of his predecessor Joe Castiglione, who earned a base pay of $450K as part of total annual compensation of $1.93M. Per Sportico, Denny’s annual compensation currently rates 20th among current FBS ADs. Denny can also “earn merit-based salary raises beginning in July 2027,” while a term sheet also stipulated that starting with the new fiscal year on July 1, he will be eligible for performance bonuses based on "academic achievement of university student-athletes, achievement of university teams and meeting and exceeding athletics department revenue and net cash flow/operating income long range goals.” The bonus structure and any set raises were not announced. Additionally, the board also approved a new title for Castiglione as Emeritus AD starting Feb. 15. (link, link, link, link)

Ohio State brought in an athletic department record $336.1M in revenue against $320.4M in expenses during FY25 for a surplus of $15.7M, according to Eleven Warriors’ Andy Anders, who notes the revenue total broke the Buckeyes’ previous mark of $279.5M set in FY23. OSU managed an extra $22.9M from football ticket sales alone in FY25 and brought in a record $68.2M in donor-funded contributions, up from $52.5M the previous year, while media rights revenues from television and radio also increased from $52.8M to $64.9M in year two of the Big Ten's seven-year, $7B media rights deal with FOX, CBS and NBC. AD Ross Bjork: “As the collegiate athletics model continues to evolve, successfully navigating the financial landscape is a must and I am proud of everyone within our program who made last year a success. While there will be continued challenges to our economic model, we will strive to be best in class by continuing to innovate and stay aggressive in generating new revenue streams while also managing our expenses as soundly as possible.” (link)

The $56M budget gap between college sports’ top two FY25 spenders, Texas ($376M) and Ohio State ($320M), is “bigger than the entire FY24 budgets of 37 public FBS schools,” per Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, who observes that includes departments such as Charlotte ($54M), New Mexico ($54M), Nevada ($53.9M), Wyoming ($53.6M), North Texas ($53.2M) and more. Cincinnati athletics revenue soared 23% to top the $100M mark for the first time in department history at $118.5M for FY25, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier’s Steve Watkins, who adds that some of the revenue gains are a bit misleading with $13M of a $22M increase due to money UC provides to the athletic department called “direct institutional support” that “can include money to cover debt service, pay for general operations or numerous other uses.” Excluding university support, revenue still rose 14% ($8M) with much of that coming via a boost in fundraising from $4.7M to $17.4M, while sponsorship sales improved $2.3M to a total of $6.8M. Expenses also jumped, rising 13% YoY to $119.3M, reflecting “the cost of doing business in the changing college sports climate, with costs rising further in the current year.” UC’s revenue will likely take another step forward in the current year, which ends in June and will be reported in January, as the school will begin receiving its full share from the Big 12, likely to be around $36M. Utah State’s upcoming move to the new Pac-12 is expected to provide a jump beyond the $3.5M annually per year in league media rights payouts offered via the Mountain West, but according to Aggies AD Cameron Walker, who didn’t disclose any specific figures, the dollar amounts might not be on the high end of estimates rumored to run between $8-15M per year. Walker: “The few years in the (media deal) are a little lean. Not worse than where we were, but a little leaner than maybe we anticipated.” Per Cache Valley Daily’s Jason Walker, “although the payout from the media deal is less than what was hoped for, the trade-off for the smaller dollar amount is that Pac-12 schools will have most of their football and men's basketball games played on networks that reach effectively 100% of households in the United States” with a minimum of around 160 games between football, men's basketball and women's basketball slated for broadcast on CBS, The CW or USA Network. Walker: “The key to the (Pac-12) is the growth and the opportunities for growth. And there's just tremendous upside, what it will do for our brand and sponsors. When all of our games are on linear television for football and men's basketball, that's impactful on what that means for sponsorship and revenue opportunities. So I think there's a lot of opportunity moving forward in the Pac-12.” More. (link)

North Texas football season ticket renewals are up more than 25% and the school currently has more than 350 new season ticket deposits and over 100 new accounts from its push to sell 10K season tickets for the upcoming 2026 Mean Green gridiron campaign. Per the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito, UNT is set to reach a key point in its ticket drive as today marks the deadline for fans to lock in ticket prices for the 2027 season by putting down a deposit or renewing early for 2026. Vito: “The school has raised season ticket prices in recent years and acknowledged that it will likely boost them again in 2027, when UNT will play seven home games. The Mean Green are set to host Texas Tech on Sept. 11, 2027, in what will be one of the highest-profile home games played in DATCU [Stadium] since it opened in 2011.” (link)
