Pittsburg State promotes VP of Athletics Jim Johnson to EVP for Engagement and Executive Affairs to assist with the launch of the university’s new strategic plan, Access PITT State. Pitt State elevates Deputy AD Anthony Crespino to become the Gorillas’ next VP of Athletics. President Thomas Newsom on Johnson and Crespino: “Very early in my time at Pitt State, I recognized the need for this leadership role on my team as we move quickly to meet the evolving needs of students and employers. Frankly, it's a hard role to fill. The fact that we had the right candidate on our campus already, and that he was willing to take it on, is truly fortunate. … Athletics at Pitt State serves so many critical roles for our students and community, and Anthony has the right mindset to step in. Tuskegee Men’s Basketball HC Benjy Taylor was removed from the court after Saturday’s loss at Morehouse in handcuffs. According to HBCU Gameday’s Steven J. Gaither, Taylor was working to ensure the league’s security protocol was enforced when Morehouse football student-athletes entered the handshake line. More comments and fallout...

➤ Taylor’s statement to Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman: “I am at a loss for words and I am upset about how I was violated and treated today. For my players, my family and people of Tuskegee to witness that is heartbreaking for me. I was simply trying to get the football team out of the handshake line as they were following right behind me and the team yelling obscenities! It was a very dangerous situation.” Taylor was not charged and was released shortly after he was removed from the court. In the aftermath, Taylor has retained civil rights attorney Harry Daniels and is exploring all options. (link, link)

➤ AD Reginald Ruffin: “We are deeply concerned by the circumstances that led to Coach Taylor being placed in a position where he felt compelled to intervene, and we stand firmly in our belief that no coach should ever be subjected to such a situation for prioritizing student-athlete safety. Tuskegee University remains committed to working collaboratively with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and our peer institutions to ensure that proper security protocols are enforced uniformly and consistently at all conference competitions.” (link)

➤ The SIAC has fined Morehouse for failing to meet the league’s required security standards and “will require corrective measures to ensure full compliance with conference security policies moving forward.” (link)

The recent rash of indictments over alleged college basketball point-shaving “seems unlikely to prompt immediate wholesale changes within the NCAA,” per Law360’s Alex Lawson, who notes the organization has used the incidents “to highlight its existing enforcement policies, while also acknowledging that more must be done, even if the most pressing changes lie not in its own hands, but those of state regulators and lawmakers.” Here are notable comments from association leaders…

➤ NCAA Managing Director of Enterprise Risk Management Clint Hangebrauk: “There's only so much that's within our control. A lot of where we feel there is significant change that needs to happen to enhance the integrity of the games is really those in power of the betting markets to take a risk-based look of what's being offered there and try to look at those riskiest bets and get them off the market.”

➤ NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement Mark Hicks said the organization “has focused on making education free and accessible to all schools, including low/mid-major schools,” noting the enormity of the allegations will spark a dialogue between the organization and its member schools that will inform how these issues are tackled going forward.”

➤ Hicks adds: “We absolutely want to apply lessons learned to strategies that we have moving forward. [The indictments] will raise awareness, it will heighten the sense of importance. I think moments like this continue to galvanize people around the importance of staying vigilant and protecting the integrity of competition. That will drive some change in itself. I think it does start with truly understanding what happened.” (link)

Sonoma State President Michael Spagna has created a financial feasibility team to determine how to fund DII athletics at SSU for the long term. This comes after a report was submitted last month and published late last week from the Athletics Task Force with the help of Mammoth Sports Consulting on how to bring back sports in 2026-27. The new committee will reportedly have its eyes set on 2027-28 for a potential return. Spagna: “I’m not going to reinstate athletics where we can’t show that it’s going to last in perpetuity. We want this thing to always be part of student life and part of the university. … This is not something where we’re delaying a decision. This is an important final step of us exploring Division II athletics coming back to the university.” The task force report lays out a plan to reinstate athletics and how to allocate $8M in state funding, with at least $5M allocated towards facility projects to support 13 sport programs. SSU is still a member of DII and would be placed on probation for not sponsoring sports in 2026-27. The university will begin the process of hiring an AD and development officer to contribute to the new financial feasibility team. (link, link - full report)

Continuing the trend from 2025, athletic departments posted more jobs with CollegeSports.jobs than on the NCAA Market in the first month of 2026. Through the first month of 2026, the number of DII job postings in the market grew 20% year-over-year as the overall job market saw a 1.83% YoY increase. On CollegeSports.jobs, DII job postings saw a YoY increase of more than 70%, while the NCAA Market saw an 11% decline. (link)

The federal government shut down Friday night for the second time in four months, but this one is expected to end within the week, perhaps as soon as Tuesday, per Inside Higher Ed’s Katherine Knott, who adds that “until the House of Representatives agrees to pass a five-bill package that the Senate approved Friday, nonessential operations at the Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services departments will be curtailed along with those at Defense, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, State, and Treasury.” House Speaker Mike Johnson is “convinced” lawmakers will approve the five spending bills by Tuesday. If the House passes the legislation, the Education Department would receive nearly $79B despite the administration’s proposal to slash $12B from the agency. Higher ed would also have had a number of wins. Knott: “In addition to increased funding for the National Institutes of Health, Congress is planning to fully fund a number of ED grant programs that President Trump wanted to cut. … The maximum Pell award would remain at $7,395 for the 2026-27 academic year, under the legislation. The Trump administration had proposed cutting $1,685 to address what was an estimated $2.7B shortfall. … Overall, the Education Department and its programs would get essentially level funding, which is considered a win in the current political environment.” More.
