Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene sat down with Pittsburgh Action Sports’ Andrew Stockey to discuss several topics, including the decision to shrink the capacity of Acrisure Stadium from 68K to 51K for home football games. "Acrisure is too big of a home for us, and when we've looked at the data, it demonstrates that the capacity of around 50K, maybe a little less, is the right size for us. And I find it interesting, as people talk about shrinking capacity, because at the same time, I hear people say we need to build, number one, an on-campus stadium, and number two, it needs to be 35K, 40K, 45K seats. So, in light of building an on-campus stadium, we're creating an environment which is what people want. It just so happens that we have one that's a little too big. Our shoes are too big for our feet. We haven't grown into it yet, so this gives us an opportunity to right-size things and provide an experience for folks that would be beneficial for all." More from Greene…
➤ With the men’s basketball team sitting at 9-12 on the season, Greene remarked that “any coach would tell you that it falls on them, and it does. And just like any athletic director would tell you, it falls on us. That's the case. And any player will tell you it falls on them. Everybody has responsibility, everyone has accountability, and it usually starts and ends with the head coach. [Panthers HC Jeff Capel] knows he needs to do better and be better, and we've had conversations about that, and I'm looking forward to being able to implement some more of the changes that we started implementing last year.”
➤ On playing two Friday night football games next season: “The way I think of it is the rules of engagement have changed and we are no longer in 2019, and as college football continues to change, as there are more and more business aspects of our industry and there’s more pressures on our athletics department to generate revenue, when viewership is tied to revenue… Friday nights become incredibly valuable to us and to not do them is essentially costing us money. There’s some heartburn with that, and we certainly recognize that.” (link)

Disney CEO Bob Iger plans to step down before his contract expires on December 31, with the board expected to vote on a successor during a meeting next week in Burbank, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Robbie Whelan, Jessica Toonkel and Ben Fritz. The race has reportedly narrowed to two internal candidates: Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro (viewed by many as the frontrunner) and Entertainment Co-Chair Dana Walden. Iger, who cited a desire to spend more time with his wife and on their ownership stake in Angel City FC, intends to remain as CEO for several months after the announcement to mentor the new leader, aiming to ensure a "fresh start" and avoid the friction that plagued the previous transition to Bob Chapek. (link); Bloomberg’s Thomas Buckley goes a step further, reporting the board is “aligning on promoting” D’Amaro “and will vote on naming a new leader in the coming week.” (link)

Freshly appointed Playfly President Chris Marinak sits down with Playfly CEO Craig Sloan to discuss what attracted him to the role, how he will apply his experience – which includes 17 years at Major League Baseball, most recently as Chief Operations and Strategy Officer – to his new role and where he believes the industry is heading. Here are the main takeaways from Marinak…
➤ On the potential of Playfly: "When I looked at Playfly, I think it's hard to find a sports organization with the reach and the scale that Playfly has. ... Playfly literally touches every aspect of the sports ecosystem. ... It's been around for five years or so, [and] there's been, what, 10 or 11 acquisitions over that time? And so when I look at it, I see a really mature company on one hand where there's a lot of mature business units, but on the other hand, now it's time to really bring those units together and act as an integrated unit."
➤ Observations of college sports: "There's probably no other sport with such a lifetime journey where you come in maybe as a prospective student then you become a student then you're an [alumnus], then you're an [alumnus] maybe that has kids that go to the school and then you're a donor. ... For us at Playfly, the biggest opportunity is to really be the glue and the connectivity point that has that conversation with the fan and helps these schools understand who their fans are." (link)

Florida State reported $211.95M in operating revenue and $208.19M in expenses for FY25, resulting in a $3.76M surplus under NCAA reporting guidelines. Revenue increased by nearly $27M year-over-year, driven largely by a reporting shift in direct institutional support, which jumped to $33.87M (up from ~$107K in FY24). However, expenses surged $38.4M, significantly impacting program-specific profitability: Football's surplus dropped to $5.2M (down from $29.8M in FY24), while men's basketball swung to a $483K deficit (down from a $7.1M profit). Contributions fell to $55.63M (down from $62.3M), while ticket sales rose to $28.52M. FSU, in an email sent to various outlets noted the following: “It is important to note that the NCAA's financial survey is not a complete representation of FSU's operating position. NCAA methodology differs from university accounting standards most notably by excluding depreciation and amortization, and by listing capital expenses ‘below the line.’ As a result, the $3.76M difference between revenue and expenses should not be interpreted as a net operating profit. Because the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, the report published in January 2027, will be the first full look at FSU's financial model in the era of direct student‑athlete compensation under the House v. NCAA settlement.” (link)

Men’s hoops analytics guru Evan Miyakawa evaluated the impact of the roughly 75 international professional recruits who entered DI basketball this season and as of early last week found that while a select few have been elite, the group as a whole has underperformed relative to traditional freshmen. Using his "Box BPR" metric, Miyakawa found that the top 50 traditional freshmen boast an average rating of +5.1, a mark matched only by the top 11 international imports—led by Hannes Steinbach (Washington), David Mirkovic (Illinois), and Mario Saint-Supery (Gonzaga). The disparity is stark at the top of rosters: 25 traditional freshmen rank among the top three producers on Power Conference teams, compared to just nine international first-years. Furthermore, 28 of the 50 "most hyped" international signees—including players at Kansas State, Kentucky, and Purdue—currently sit outside the top 1500 players nationally in Box BPR. Miyakawa notes that only 30% of the international cohort outperformed his conservative preseason projections, concluding that while programs like Virginia (with Thijs De Ridder and Johann Grünloh) struck gold through elite scouting, the strategy of mining overseas pros is far from a guaranteed fix, with many "fading into anonymity." ➤ Southern Utah Softball HC Don Don Williams inks an extension through the 2028 season. (link)
➤ Kent State Baseball HC Jeff Duncan inks a contract extension to continue guiding the Golden Flashes through the 2030 season. (link)
➤ The California Post’s Ben Bolch breaks down the contract details for new UCLA Football HC Bob Chesney, who signed a five-year, $33.75M deal with an average annual value of $6.75M—a figure that would rank outside the top 35 nationally in the 2025 salary database. Chesney’s package includes a $3.7M hiring bonus and annual retention bonuses of $550K starting in 2027. His buyout structure requires him to pay $8M if he leaves before Dec. 21, 2026, and that figure drops incrementally to $1M by 2030. Meanwhile, UCLA would owe 75% of his remaining salary if terminated without cause. As far as ACs go, OC Colin Hitschler received a three-year deal averaging $1.6M, DC Dean Kennedy signed for two years at $1.34M, and GM Darrick Yray inked a two-year contract at $475K annually. Front Office Sports’ Ellyn Briggs explores the rapid professionalization of collegiate creative media teams, which have evolved into "full-blown production studios" to drive recruiting, sponsorship, and donor engagement in the NIL era. USC Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications and Brand Advancement Cody Worsham leads a roughly 20-person full-time staff operating on a "close to eight-figure" budget, and Briggs notes the unit won an Emmy for a 2024 football hype video and produced nearly 1,700 posts in December 2025 alone. Similarly, Florida has tripled its creative team to around 20 employees (six dedicated to football), with salaries increasing 50% since 2021 and total investment pushing "well into the seven figures." The strategy is paying dividends at the Group of 5 level as well: Tulsa’s viral "Portal House" social campaign generated 2.5M impressions in a single day and helped secure 22 transfer commitments, while FIU quadrupled its creative staff to achieve a top-10 national growth rate on Instagram. Additionally, Sky River Casino will become the naming partner of the Sky River Casino End Zone at Hornet Stadium and as a presenting sponsor of marquee events. The partnership also includes annual community and engagement events hosted at Sky River Casino for fans, alumni, and supporters to connect with Sacramento State coaches, student-athletes, and programs beyond game day. VeloU Founder Dr. Nick Serio argues in a piece for Baseball America that the "tectonic shifts" in college athletics—specifically the preference for older, proven talent in the NIL era—may inadvertently curb the UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) injury epidemic among young pitchers. Serio notes the average age of a DI baseball player has risen from 20.1 in 2022 to 21.9 in 2024, with seniors/grad students now accounting for roughly 33% of innings compared to just 15% for freshmen. While this trend pushes high school recruits toward junior college or lower divisions, Serio contends this delay is beneficial, citing data that pitchers who undergo Tommy John surgery before age 19 have less than half the odds of reaching the majors compared to those injured later. He concludes that the closed door to Power 4 programs "keeps them healthy long enough to walk through a better one,” adding: “Two additional years suddenly become available for development rather than desperation. We have strong evidence that velocity is not the enemy, as research shows that its significance to injury actually decreases as age rises. Which means the real issue all along has been the timeline we are forcing upon its development.” (link)

Disney and the NFL officially closed a strategic partnership that sees the league acquire a 10% minority stake in ESPN—valued by Octagon at roughly $2.2B to $2.5B—while ESPN gains control of NFL Network, NFL RedZone, and other NFL Media assets. NFL Media employees will transition to ESPN in April, and NFL Network is slated to integrate into ESPN's direct-to-consumer streaming platform by the start of the 2026 season, according to Variety’s Brian Steinberg, who notes the deal aims to fortify ESPN's digital future as cable distribution wanes. Specifically, Kagan data projects ESPN and ESPN2 subscribers will drop to ~57.9M by the end of 2026, while NFL Network saw its base fall to 46.7M in 2024. Furthermore, the equity stake may disincentivize the NFL from exercising its right to opt out of its current media deals after the 2029 season. (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair talks about making Toledo a destination school: “I am incredibly bullish on Toledo, Ohio, and anytime I've had a chance to recruit staff or coaches and I start talking about Toledo, they’re like, ‘Damn, you really believe this. You're really excited about this place.’ And I am. … What we've got to do, and I think this for our athletic department, I think this for the city as a whole, people get here in our city or on our campus and they're like, ‘Wow, this is impressive. I did not expect it to be this.’ How do we get to the point where now the national expectation is when you show up, it's going to be amazing, and then we just match that vibe once you get here. And I think that's the jump I'd love to see our brand as Northwest Ohioans and as the University of Toledo make, that when a Toledo women's basketball coach offers you a scholarship and you land on campus, you say, ‘wow, this matches what I thought it would be.’ It's not a, ‘wow, I did not know Toledo was this great. Wow, you were on par with many of these P4s’ and eliminate that narrative and get to the point where you expect Toledo to be at the top of the heap.” (link)

Additional insight from Akron AD Dr. Andrew Goodrich on the Higher Ed Athletics podcast. On his path and preparation to get the Akron AD job: “I was first contacted by a search firm [while at Gardner-Webb] and that happens from time-to-time. … On this particular occasion, I had felt like we had wrapped up a couple really big things that we wanted to do and I was feeling a sense of, ‘you know what, if you were to go, you would have left this place better than how you found it.’ So at that point I kind of said, ‘Let me do a little bit of research and see more about this.’ Listen, I use the D1.dossier. It helped me a ton because … I've got a day job and I want to do some pretty in-depth research. I'm sorry, shameless plug because it works. It's really effective. I was able to evaluate all of the sports programs. I was able to evaluate their budgets and just get a sense of where they were and so I can understand the challenges that may lie ahead. And then I think after that, when you start to engage in that conversation, say ‘yes, I'm willing to have that conversation,’ I ended up meeting with a group of campus leaders at Akron. I met with a group of athletics department leaders, did not present per se, but rather went through a group interview process. And then after that, of course, we met with the board of trustees, some representatives of the board, and then met with the president himself.” (link)

More from North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen on the Hot Mic with Dom Izzo podcast. On if five-for-five eligibility, with no more redshirts available, is realistic: “I think the NCAA National Office will be telling you it's going to be really hard to say, okay, absolutely no waivers ever, because there's always just unique situations. The other issue with five-for-five too is it's not as simple as just turn it, flip the switch and say, we're going to do it. There is some legal risk there, based on the classes that over the last 10 years didn't have that opportunity and could say they have a case, an antitrust case. There's just a lot of moving parts and there's not just one. If it was a simple solution, we would have done it six years ago. So there's a lot of moving parts. There's a lot of legal risk to a lot of these things.” (link)

Heck of a scene in Happy Valley yesterday as Penn State Men’s Hockey hosted Michigan State in front of 74,000+ fans inside Beaver Stadium. Earlier in the week, Inside the Lions’ Audrey Snyder detailed Penn State’s preparations to host a pair of outdoor games, noting the school utilized snow blowers all day last Sunday to clear the rink during one of the largest Northeast snowstorms in years. PSU Assoc. AD for Facilities Management and Operations Herb Combs: “With a storm of the magnitude we’re talking about, we’re not going to be able to actually do anything impactful until Tuesday. It’s an outdoor hockey game in the end of January in Central PA — our goal is to do the best that we can and make it safe for everybody that’s coming to see this outstanding opportunity here in the venue.” Snyder: “Penn State decided ahead of the snowstorm it would close the Upper North area of the stadium. … It moved people who purchased tickets there to other locations.” Combs earlier in the week: “Overall, we’re almost there with the rink and now we just gotta brace ourselves and manage the venue and manage the parking to go along with it.” More. The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, Bruce Feldman, Ralph Russo and David Ubben reached out to numerous FBS coaches to examine what they’ve learned as a result of Indiana’s rapid championship turnaround. An anonymous Group of 6 HC: “It’s changed the game. It’s not Michigan. It’s not Ohio State. … It’s super inspiring. If you can do it at Indiana, you can do it anywhere.” An anonymous Power 4 HC: “Curt is a damn good coach. His teams don’t beat themselves. He wins close games. Combine that with an elite QB and smattering of transfers — lethal combination in my opinion. You can’t really make changes to get to that. Everyone is already trying to get older and more experienced and everyone is trying to get the best QB — Indiana just did it better.” Another anonymous Power 4 HC: “Everyone will now ask the question, why not us? But that’s the wrong question. It has to be, are you willing to pay the price and do what it takes to get there? The teams that can do it. Everybody thinks they have a chance. But that’s not the reality. Because there’s a factor of what you’re willing to do and do you know what to do to get yourself there.” Much more. (link)

The job of a head coach has fundamentally changed, per former St. John’s AD Mike Cragg, along with Eric Lautenbach and Ezra Kucharz, who write in a LinkedIn note that while winning games still matters, it’s no longer enough as the most successful programs are now “led by head coaches who operate not just as tacticians and motivators, but as enterprise leaders - CEOs in mindset, if not in title.” Cragg, Lautenbach and Kucharz: “What separates today’s environment from previous eras is not pressure - pressure has always existed - but complexity. Head coaches are now responsible for organizations that function year-round, not just in season. They manage brands that never go dark. They communicate with athletes and families, assistants and staff, donors and sponsors, alumni and fans, media and university leadership - often simultaneously and under scrutiny. In that environment, the most important leadership skill is no longer play-calling or player development alone. It is communication. … In business, this is well understood. CEOs are judged as much by how they communicate as by what they decide. In college athletics, we are only now catching up to that reality.” More. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann notes that a “big hurdle to college athlete employment and unionization” is that “public university employees can't bargain in some states. One possible fix is a multiemployer bargaining unit, like the conference, which is a private entity, or a group of conferences (e.g., Power Conferences).” In response to a question about why schools would follow conference rules when they don’t follow NCAA rules, McCann says: “My instinct is schools would be more inclined to follow rules in a CBA; labor law has been a good check on pro sports (both players and management), IMO. Conferences could land on different rules, too, if they negotiated separate CBAs. Could this be hard? Sure. But I'd say it would probably be better than the current situation which is a mess and only getting messier.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has found San Jose State violated Title IX, concluding the school’s policies allowing males to compete in women’s sports and access female-only facilities denied women equal educational opportunities and benefits. As a result, OCR has issued a proposed five-step Resolution Agreement to SJSU to voluntarily resolve its Title IX violations. The required actions include: “Issue a public statement to the SJSU community that SJSU will adopt biology-based definitions of the words ‘male’ and ‘female’ and acknowledge that the sex of a human – male or female – is unchangeable; specify that SJSU will follow Title IX by separating sports and intimate facilities based on biological sex; state that SJSU will not delegate its obligation to comply with Title IX to any external association or entity and will not contract with any entity that discriminates on the basis of sex; restore to individual female athletes all individual athletic records and titles misappropriated by male athletes competing in women’s categories; and send a personalized apology to every woman who played in SJSU’s women’s indoor volleyball (2022–2024), 2023 beach volleyball, and to any woman on a team that forfeited rather than compete against SJSU while a male student was on the roster—expressing sincere regret for placing female athletes in that position.” (link)

San Diego State has agreed to pay $300K to settle a Title IX lawsuit filed in 2022 by 15 former SDSU rowers and track and field student-athletes alleging the school failed to provide women with athletic opportunities proportionate to their enrollment, as required under federal law. Per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, the school has also agreed to pay $1.3M to cover the plaintiffs’ attorneys’ fees, court costs and expenses. Libit: “After the parties reached a preliminary settlement last fall, class-action notices were distributed to affected members Wednesday. A final fairness approval hearing is scheduled for April 16. If granted, the case would mark the first time plaintiffs have recovered monetary damages in a Title IX case centered on disproportionate athletic financial aid.” More. (link)
