Toledo AD Bryan Blair talks about making Toledo a destination school: “I am incredibly bullish on Toledo, Ohio, and anytime I've had a chance to recruit staff or coaches and I start talking about Toledo, they’re like, ‘Damn, you really believe this. You're really excited about this place.’ And I am. … What we've got to do, and I think this for our athletic department, I think this for the city as a whole, people get here in our city or on our campus and they're like, ‘Wow, this is impressive. I did not expect it to be this.’ How do we get to the point where now the national expectation is when you show up, it's going to be amazing, and then we just match that vibe once you get here. And I think that's the jump I'd love to see our brand as Northwest Ohioans and as the University of Toledo make, that when a Toledo women's basketball coach offers you a scholarship and you land on campus, you say, ‘wow, this matches what I thought it would be.’ It's not a, ‘wow, I did not know Toledo was this great. Wow, you were on par with many of these P4s’ and eliminate that narrative and get to the point where you expect Toledo to be at the top of the heap.” (link)

Additional insight from Akron AD Dr. Andrew Goodrich on the Higher Ed Athletics podcast. On his path and preparation to get the Akron AD job: “I was first contacted by a search firm [while at Gardner-Webb] and that happens from time-to-time. … On this particular occasion, I had felt like we had wrapped up a couple really big things that we wanted to do and I was feeling a sense of, ‘you know what, if you were to go, you would have left this place better than how you found it.’ So at that point I kind of said, ‘Let me do a little bit of research and see more about this.’ Listen, I use the D1.dossier. It helped me a ton because … I've got a day job and I want to do some pretty in-depth research. I'm sorry, shameless plug because it works. It's really effective. I was able to evaluate all of the sports programs. I was able to evaluate their budgets and just get a sense of where they were and so I can understand the challenges that may lie ahead. And then I think after that, when you start to engage in that conversation, say ‘yes, I'm willing to have that conversation,’ I ended up meeting with a group of campus leaders at Akron. I met with a group of athletics department leaders, did not present per se, but rather went through a group interview process. And then after that, of course, we met with the board of trustees, some representatives of the board, and then met with the president himself.” (link) 

More from North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen on the Hot Mic with Dom Izzo podcast. On if five-for-five eligibility, with no more redshirts available, is realistic: “I think the NCAA National Office will be telling you it's going to be really hard to say, okay, absolutely no waivers ever, because there's always just unique situations. The other issue with five-for-five too is it's not as simple as just turn it, flip the switch and say, we're going to do it. There is some legal risk there, based on the classes that over the last 10 years didn't have that opportunity and could say they have a case, an antitrust case. There's just a lot of moving parts and there's not just one. If it was a simple solution, we would have done it six years ago. So there's a lot of moving parts. There's a lot of legal risk to a lot of these things.” (link)

Heck of a scene in Happy Valley yesterday as Penn State Men’s Hockey hosted Michigan State in front of 74,000+ fans inside Beaver Stadium. Earlier in the week, Inside the Lions’ Audrey Snyder detailed Penn State’s preparations to host a pair of outdoor games, noting the school utilized snow blowers all day last Sunday to clear the rink during one of the largest Northeast snowstorms in years. PSU Assoc. AD for Facilities Management and Operations Herb Combs: “With a storm of the magnitude we’re talking about, we’re not going to be able to actually do anything impactful until Tuesday. It’s an outdoor hockey game in the end of January in Central PA — our goal is to do the best that we can and make it safe for everybody that’s coming to see this outstanding opportunity here in the venue.” Snyder: “Penn State decided ahead of the snowstorm it would close the Upper North area of the stadium. …  It moved people who purchased tickets there to other locations.” Combs earlier in the week: “Overall, we’re almost there with the rink and now we just gotta brace ourselves and manage the venue and manage the parking to go along with it.” More. The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, Bruce Feldman, Ralph Russo and David Ubben reached out to numerous FBS coaches to examine what they’ve learned as a result of Indiana’s rapid championship turnaround. An anonymous Group of 6 HC: “It’s changed the game. It’s not Michigan. It’s not Ohio State. … It’s super inspiring. If you can do it at Indiana, you can do it anywhere.” An anonymous Power 4 HC: “Curt is a damn good coach. His teams don’t beat themselves. He wins close games. Combine that with an elite QB and smattering of transfers — lethal combination in my opinion. You can’t really make changes to get to that. Everyone is already trying to get older and more experienced and everyone is trying to get the best QB — Indiana just did it better.” Another anonymous Power 4 HC: “Everyone will now ask the question, why not us? But that’s the wrong question. It has to be, are you willing to pay the price and do what it takes to get there? The teams that can do it. Everybody thinks they have a chance. But that’s not the reality. Because there’s a factor of what you’re willing to do and do you know what to do to get yourself there.” Much more. (link) 

The job of a head coach has fundamentally changed, per former St. John’s AD Mike Cragg, along with Eric Lautenbach and Ezra Kucharz, who write in a LinkedIn note that while winning games still matters, it’s no longer enough as the most successful programs are now “led by head coaches who operate not just as tacticians and motivators, but as enterprise leaders - CEOs in mindset, if not in title.” Cragg, Lautenbach and Kucharz: “What separates today’s environment from previous eras is not pressure - pressure has always existed - but complexity. Head coaches are now responsible for organizations that function year-round, not just in season. They manage brands that never go dark. They communicate with athletes and families, assistants and staff, donors and sponsors, alumni and fans, media and university leadership - often simultaneously and under scrutiny. In that environment, the most important leadership skill is no longer play-calling or player development alone. It is communication. … In business, this is well understood. CEOs are judged as much by how they communicate as by what they decide. In college athletics, we are only now catching up to that reality.” More. (link)

Continuing the trend from 2025, athletic departments posted more jobs with CollegeSports.jobs than on the NCAA Market in the first month of 2026. While the overall job market was up YoY in terms of number of postings (+1.83%), Division I jobs specifically dipped 1.85% overall, but fell 23.80% on the NCAA Market. Meanwhile on CollegeSports.jobs, Division I postings were up 22.15% and overall postings climbed 28.64% against January 2025. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann notes that a “big hurdle to college athlete employment and unionization” is that “public university employees can't bargain in some states. One possible fix is a multiemployer bargaining unit, like the conference, which is a private entity, or a group of conferences (e.g., Power Conferences).” In response to a question about why schools would follow conference rules when they don’t follow NCAA rules, McCann says: “My instinct is schools would be more inclined to follow rules in a CBA; labor law has been a good check on pro sports (both players and management), IMO. Conferences could land on different rules, too, if they negotiated separate CBAs. Could this be hard? Sure. But I'd say it would probably be better than the current situation which is a mess and only getting messier.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has found San Jose State violated Title IX, concluding the school’s policies allowing males to compete in women’s sports and access female-only facilities denied women equal educational opportunities and benefits. As a result, OCR has issued a proposed five-step Resolution Agreement to SJSU to voluntarily resolve its Title IX violations. The required actions include: “Issue a public statement to the SJSU community that SJSU will adopt biology-based definitions of the words ‘male’ and ‘female’ and acknowledge that the sex of a human – male or female – is unchangeable; specify that SJSU will follow Title IX by separating sports and intimate facilities based on biological sex; state that SJSU will not delegate its obligation to comply with Title IX to any external association or entity and will not contract with any entity that discriminates on the basis of sex; restore to individual female athletes all individual athletic records and titles misappropriated by male athletes competing in women’s categories; and send a personalized apology to every woman who played in SJSU’s women’s indoor volleyball (2022–2024), 2023 beach volleyball, and to any woman on a team that forfeited rather than compete against SJSU while a male student was on the roster—expressing sincere regret for placing female athletes in that position.” (link)  

San Diego State has agreed to pay $300K to settle a Title IX lawsuit filed in 2022 by 15 former SDSU rowers and track and field student-athletes alleging the school failed to provide women with athletic opportunities proportionate to their enrollment, as required under federal law. Per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, the school has also agreed to pay $1.3M to cover the plaintiffs’ attorneys’ fees, court costs and expenses. Libit: “After the parties reached a preliminary settlement last fall, class-action notices were distributed to affected members Wednesday. A final fairness approval hearing is scheduled for April 16. If granted, the case would mark the first time plaintiffs have recovered monetary damages in a Title IX case centered on disproportionate athletic financial aid.” More. (link) 

Former UCLA Men’s Basketball student-athlete Amari Bailey, who was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 2023 & ended up playing in 10 NBA games, wants to bring his talents back to the collegiate ranks. Bailey: “Right now I'd be a senior in college. I'm not trying to be 27 years old playing college athletics. No shade to the guys that do; that's their journey. But I went to go play professionally and learned a lot, went through a lot. So, like, why not me? … It's not a stunt. I'm really serious about going back. I just want to improve my game, change the perception of me and just show that I can win.” NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley reiterates players who signed an NBA contract will not be granted eligibility. The Athletic’s Matt Baker & Ralph Russo report the College Sports Commission has opened an inquiry into potential violations connected to NIL deals & student-athlete compensation at LSU. Notably, the probe is not centered on the Tigers’ football program. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds more context: “Several college programs - at least one in the Big Ten and one in the Big 12 in addition to LSU - have received letters of inquiry from the CSC over last few weeks over athletes not reporting NIL deals. Some have already been resolved thru communications with CSC officials.” (link, link, link)

Lots of action from Athens as Georgia President Jere Morehead went on the offensive yesterday by saying the SEC may move to regulate rules - such as transfer portal tampering - as a conference function & not rely on the NCAA or CSC. Here’s more…

 

➤ Morehead says he has the support of a handful of other SEC CEOs, adds: ”Have we seen the CSC move against any institution yet? I don’t think so. Have we seen the NCAA take any action on tampering? I don’t think so. So I think we’re getting to the point that the Southeastern Conference is going to have to create its own set of rules, enforce them against our members, and hope that we can set an example that the other Power 4 conferences would then follow. But we desperately need rules, and rules that are going to be enforced. We have rules, but they’re not being enforced.” 

 

➤ More from Morehead: “What’s the risk? That we’re going to have a great, orderly conference where we’re all working together, and everyone else is in chaos? Does that really put us in a bad position? I don’t know. Maybe it puts us in a better position to have less chaos, because right now we have chaos, and we’re still waiting for someone to enforce the House settlement, and for someone to enforce the NCAA tampering rules.” (link)

 

➤ When might a corporate jersey patch appear on a UGA uniform? Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “It's something we're going to take a look at. But we're Georgia, we do things a certain way. We take pride and we love our partnerships with our key partners. It's got to be the right fit for us. It's got to make sense. We're not just out there chasing dollars for the sake of chasing dollars. We want to do it the right way.” (link)

 

➤ And how about the potential of the Dawgs adding Women’s Flag Football? Brooks: “I think it's something you have to keep an eye on. Obviously, a lot of athletic departments right now are challenged just to meet the needs of their current number of sports, but I do see that as something that's going to be a lot of growth in that area. A lot of popularity, especially in the state of Georgia.” (link)

St. John’s AD Ed Kull joins Steph Garcia Cichosz on the One Question Leadership Podcast and covers topics ranging from the future of Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino to the evolution of athletic department org charts. Here’s Kull in his own words…

 

➤ On the reality of student-athlete earnings: "Coach Pitino has a quote that he's said… 'Are we doing a service to student-athletes, where for many of them, this is the largest amount of money they will ever make?' And that's just a scary comment to think that when their professional career begins… they won't make about the same amount of money they're making now."

 

➤ What will athletic departments look like in the future? "I guess a little bit of that Kentucky model where they created now that LLC and kind of a for-profit entity separate from the school… I'm very much intrigued by that because I think that model is the direction we're going in, that for-profit professional sports model. ... You can't continue to go back… to your board of trustees or your state government or your president asking for more and more money or more and more brick and mortar."

 

➤ Fundraising as the primary job function for an AD: "It's definitely the priority and lead role of my job on a daily basis. It probably does not show up in my job description… but it's definitely my everyday lead.” (link)

➤ Taylor on new Football HC Collin Klein and the commitment from the department to the new staff: “We gave him some numbers in which to work with from a staff that was certainly, you know, a little bit more than we had in the past. But you know, he's been really good about managing that and making sure he stays within that number, and then coming up with other ideas.” 

 

➤ As for his trip to Topeka with Kansas AD Travis Goff and Wichita State AD Kevin Saal: “It's really, was more about education, about kind of where college athletics is and and really talk about the economic impact all three schools have in the state. We had a company called Tripp Umbach do an economic impact study of all three schools. And the one number that stands out to me that we presented to the joint session of the Commerce Department of the Senate and the House was we bring $1.55B of revenue to the state in the three schools, which is a very big number. And we just wanted to let them know that we are a valuable asset to the state as we kind of go through the challenges of the financial challenges of our new world, of the $20.5M. That they may need to consider helping us as other states across the country are helping their athletic programs. It's a challenge, and I understand that, but it was really more of a 'hey, this is where the world is in college athletics today, but yet, remember that we are an economic impact driver to the state, not just KU or K-State, but Wichita State. And collectively, what we bring to the state and our various communities is a pretty big number.'” 

 

➤ As far as jersey patches, Taylor: “The jersey patches, finally got approved from the administrative cabinet. Now it goes to the sport oversight committees to figure out where those patches will go.” More. (link)

The OU Daily’s Anusha Fathepure indicates that Oklahoma hired new AD Roger Denny in part to spearhead the stalled Rock Creek Entertainment District project, citing his previous legal work on Ballpark Village in St. Louis. Denny this week emphasized the resilience required for such developments, stating: "Big projects like that aren't easy, and a lot of them fall apart just because of the fatigue that comes with them." Denny also referred to his Ballpark Village experience and explained: “Ultimately, what I saw in that deal… the thing I learned from that is that you just have to keep plugging away at it and plugging away at it every time it turns, and you think the deal might be falling apart, we'll stay in the fight longer than anyone.” The $1B proposed district, which would include a new arena for basketball and gymnastics, faces hurdles as the Oklahoma Supreme Court reviews a petition challenging its tax increment financing (TIF) model. While the Norman City Council approved the plan 5-4 last September, President Joseph Harroz Jr. has warned that if local approval fails, the university will look to other cities like Oklahoma City or Moore to build the facility. LCP Principal Ashley Mould posits the league's increased competitiveness is partly to blame: While continental giants like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG benefit from consistent domestic dominance that guarantees lucrative Champions League participation, English clubs face a fiercer internal battle that can result in significant revenue swings based on on-pitch performance. Kennesaw State Men’s Basketball HC Antoine Pettway remarks on the point shaving allegations against MBB student-athlete Simeon Cottle, who was charged earlier this month with intentionally underperforming in exchange for money. Pettway on the scheme’s ringleaders: “You're being a predator online and you're reaching out to them, getting these dudes to mess up. Because there's a lot of dudes on that list that you feel bad for, that they've got a long road ahead of them because, in the dark, a grown-up reached out to them and led them down the wrong path. … I think something needs to be done about these predators that are reaching out to these young dudes in college basketball who don't have a lot and dangle this money in front of their faces." Sports Illustrated’s Maren Angus-Coombs examines how Texas Tech Softball HC Gerry Glasco leveraged The Matador Club to orchestrate a massive roster overhaul aimed at winning a national championship, highlighted by last year’s addition of former Stanford star pitcher NiJaree Canady. Glasco explains that the collective “had lawyers advising us, and the advice to me was to go coach softball. Stay out of it, don't contact anyone, you've got to go quiet. They'd handle building the roster for us." The strategy, which reportedly involved six-figure NIL offers to players still on other rosters (including transfers from Florida, Tennessee, and UCLA), drew veiled criticism from Tennessee HC Karen Weekly, who tweeted: "Contacting players… before their season ends and signing them to NIL deals before they enter the portal is wrong." Glasco, however, praised the organization's efficiency: "I think it's a school that has a fan base, an alumni base, and then an athletic base that wants to win. They have boosters that are big fans who graduated from here, and they're putting money into every program we have. They're extremely organized, they're extremely up-to-date. What they're doing with lawyers is amazing." (link)

Syracuse Women’s Basketball HC Felisha Legette-Jack believes the program’s ability to sustain its recent resurgence depends on increased financial support to compensate players, per Syracuse.com’s Justin Girshon. Legette-Jack: “No matter how much I passionately say it, if you guys in this community don’t support me and help me financially get behind what I’m trying to create here — for the love of this great university in this great city — it’s not even going to be possible for even me to continue at this level. We need more help. … We are getting money taken away from us, but this community is one of the richest communities in the country. How do I know? Because I did my work, we have about 37 billionaires in the surrounding area. We have over 80 millionaires right here in the crevice of a 500-mile radius. All we’re asking for is for you to see what we’re trying to do. … I need this community to understand, I cannot continue to just be this face that speaks it out. They’re not even gonna open the door if you don’t have the (revenue) share and you don’t have the NIL money. … All we’re asking for is you to see what we’re trying to do. See that we’re 3.362 overall GPA. See the character and the display when you see the commercials of Syracuse women’s basketball, and then see the results on the basketball court. If we can really, honestly, say that is great stuff, prove it.” (link)
