NJCU’s DIII athletics program will be eliminated after this academic year as part of the university’s merger with Kean, per D3sports. More details: “As of now, only the men's basketball team will remain as an NJCU athletic team, pending the school's application to compete in a non-NCAA association. NJCU's women's cross country student athletes, as well as their team members in the sports of men's and women's outdoor track and field, men's and women's wrestling, and eSports, will be automatically accepted onto teams at Kean. Student-athletes on the men's and women's soccer teams, men's and women's volleyball teams, the women's basketball team and the softball team will have to try out in order to compete at Kean.” Per Kean’s merger FAQ page, the Cougars will expand their roster sizes to accommodate NJCU student-athletes, but no exact details are provided. Mount Saint Vincent promotes Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Christine Friel to AD, as AD Phil Stern steps into a new role as VP for University Student Engagement. Stern: “Since hiring her in 2020, we have been aligned in our vision for our student-athletes here at UMSV. She has always put the positive student-athlete experience and welfare above all else. … Christine has demonstrated exceptional leadership in many different roles during her time at the Mount and quickly rose to the level of Senior Associate Athletic Director through her hard work, dedication and attention to detail. This promotion ensures a smooth transition for our student-athletes and staff and I am excited for the future of UMSV Athletics under her leadership.” (link)

On-going federal case Johnson v. NCAA could “lead to a new order in college sports that restates the economic relationship between athletes and their schools,” per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes with a deadline of next Tuesday to explain “efforts” to reach a settlement, whatever is disclosed will be enlightening. McCann: “If the parties don’t reach a settlement, and Johnson advances past a motion to dismiss, the case will progress toward potential pretrial discovery that would be much more invasive than what schools faced in House v. NCAA and other antitrust litigation. And if Johnson goes to trial and the athletes win, the NCAA and member schools could be on the hook to pay billions of dollars in damages. … A denial [of the NCAA’s motion to dismiss] by [Judge John] Padova would move the case into another phase where the judge will determine if the case should become a class action—possibly on behalf of all Division I college athletes dating back to 2016 or 2017—and oversee pretrial discovery. … Like House, Johnson could settle at some point, with a settlement paying many thousands of former and current college athletes and changing rules to acknowledge them as student employees. The alternative is to gamble the courts will side with the NCAA. That hasn’t been a good bet of late.” More. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker criticizes schools backing eligibility lawsuits for professional players, accusing them of wanting to avoid playing "by the same rules everyone else is" and making the rulebook "disingenuous." Baker's comments to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde come ahead of a Friday preliminary injunction hearing for Alabama (DI) center Charles Bediako, whose TRO has allowed him to play since Jan. 24 despite signing multiple NBA contracts. Baker warns that a ruling in Bediako's favor could set a precedent for others, like former UCLA (DI) player Amari Bailey—who appeared in 10 NBA games—to return to college, potentially displacing high school recruits. Baker also noted the irony of Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, who helped strike down transfer restrictions, now calling the resulting portal chaos a "train wreck." Baker also notes that a string of state court rulings that favor local programs don’t quite reconcile with federal rulings and says: “We have to marry those two tracks, the state courts and the federal courts. And it’s going to take a while.” (link)

Disney has selected Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro to succeed Bob Iger as the company’s CEO, effective March 18. CNBC’s Lillian Rizzo notes this is the second time in six years that Disney has announced Iger’s successor and that he will remain on staff as a senior advisor and Disney board member until he retires from the company on Dec. 31. Additionally, Disney Entertainment Co-Chair Dana Walden was named President/Chief Creative Officer as part of the transition announcement. More. (link)
