NCAA President Charlie Baker tells Sports Illustrated that the upcoming 2026 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments could be the last to feature 68 teams, calling it a “good question” and acknowledging that the organization is "working to see if we can make it 72 or 76" for 2027 and beyond. Baker also tells SI’s Pat Forde that every expansion has been with resistance: "Everyone thought the world was going to come to an end. And it didn’t." Addressing concerns that additional at-large bids would disproportionately benefit mediocre power conference teams, Baker says he remains unconvinced that would be the sole outcome; however, Forde notes that “in both 2024 and ’25, three of the four teams on the wrong side of the bubble were from power conferences. In 2023, all four of those teams came from power leagues.” (link)

More from NCAA President Charlie Baker, who criticizes schools backing eligibility lawsuits for professional players, accusing them of wanting to avoid playing "by the same rules everyone else is" and making the rulebook "disingenuous." Baker's comments to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde come ahead of a Friday preliminary injunction hearing for Alabama center Charles Bediako, whose TRO has allowed him to play since Jan. 24 despite signing multiple NBA contracts. Baker warns that a ruling in Bediako's favor could set a precedent for others, like former UCLA player Amari Bailey—who appeared in 10 NBA games—to return to college, potentially displacing high school recruits. Baker also notes that a string of state court rulings that favor local programs don’t quite reconcile with federal rulings and says: “We have to marry those two tracks, the state courts and the federal courts. And it’s going to take a while.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy there’s “not a day that goes by that we don’t strategize and discuss the revenue piece or the marketing and branding piece. I think there’s some areas within sport, technology and innovation [we can look at]. Data and analytics have become even more important. We’re always looking at those. The use of AI — is there a role from not only revenue perspective, but just overall efficiencies within the organization? We’re going to stay aggressive, and that’s where we’ve been. We haven’t been able to just kind of rest on previous positions or rest on having all the resources that maybe some other conferences have. It continues to be such an important priority for us as we look into the future. ... When you look at revenue, [we’re] at an all-time high. Sponsorship is at an all-time high. … Moving forward, we’re well positioned as we go into 2026 and beyond, but nobody’s resting around 620 Tryon St. (ACC HQ), I can promise you that. I’ve never operated that way, and I’ve never led that way. There’s more for us to do. Some of it, I’m sure we don’t even know what we’re going to have to do when you look at five or 10 years from now, but we’ll continue to figure that out. The ACC just means too much to so many.” (link)

More on the Mountain West’s new media rights deal from The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who reports that financial terms were not disclosed, but Commissioner Gloria Nevarez confirmed legacy members will maintain their ~$3.5M annual payout, potentially subsidized by league reserves amid ongoing litigation with the Pac-12. The deal features approximately 41 football games on linear TV, including the championship game on Fox Sports, while the conference's app will transition to a paid subscription model with two pricing tiers launching in July. Schools will directly earn money based on the specific number of subscriptions they drive. Nevarez on the decision to put the app behind a paywall: “For years, we’ve been building the app, and we’re really proud of the platform and the quality of production. In this day and age of revenue sharing and NIL, we felt it was time to bet on ourselves and put a paywall around it knowing that dollars from subscriptions will go back to the school that brought those in.” (link)

The OVC commissioner search is advancing, with virtual interviews expected to begin the week of February 16 followed by in-person rounds in late February and early March, according to CollegeAD. WittKieffer is managing the process to replace Beth DeBauche, with sources indicating the salary range for the next commissioner will be $250K to $300K—a reduction from the $340,000 DeBauche was earning. Following a Tuesday ruling by the Oklahoma Supreme Court that the gist of a local resident petition opposing Oklahoma’s intention to build a new arena proved insufficient, Oklahoma and the city of Norman are now prepared to move forward with the building of a $1.2B entertainment district in Rock Creek that’s expected to include a nearly $330M arena to succeed the Lloyd Noble Center. Per SoonerScoop’s George Stoia, “The arena is expected to seat around 8K fans and would be the home for OU men’s and women’s basketball, as well as women’s gymnastics. OU will be the anchor tenant of the arena, using around 24-28% of its availability each year.” More including the Supreme Court’s ruling and renderings. (link, link, link)

New Colorado AD Fernando Lovo’s first month in Boulder “hasn’t been about sweeping changes,” according to On SI’s Ben Armendariz, but rather about “listening, learning, and laying a strong foundation.” Lovo: “For me, [Colorado] was a destination and a place I know we can win and win at a high level. And are you kidding me, living in Boulder? I’ll take that every day. … I’ve had incredible meetings, and I’m excited. Everyone’s eager and ready to get to work and try new things.” More from Lovo, this time on constant industry change: “I think you’ve just got to be calm in the midst of chaos. It’s easy to get caught up in all the narratives and the things that are changing every day. … We have to be innovative, we’ve got to do things differently. We can’t just look at what worked three, four, five years ago and say, ‘Let’s just do it again.’ We have to think differently, and we’re going to push the envelope.” More. (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reports there is a “great deal of confidence that the number of allowable fall games will increase from 2 to 4 during April voting with the D1 Council. The measure I'm told, had overwhelming support amongst the Division I Baseball Oversight Committee, and was pushed forward.” He adds: “Here's more scoop for you. It is still in the 'discussion' stages, but there appears to be at least some momentum involved in the potential of moving the [NCAA baseball] season back to a first weekend of March start date. Very long way to go, but it's something that has been reenergized by Clemson head coach Erik Bakich behind the scenes.” (link)

Alabama A&M AD Dr. Paul Bryant and Director of Fan Engagement Kristol Williams joined the From The Hill podcast to discuss the department's commercial momentum, noting that the upcoming rivalry game against Alabama State is nearing a sellout with ticket prices pushed to $50. More from Bryant:
➤ On the department's strategy for corporate partnerships: "We're trying to create partnerships and people who want to see their name on the arena as well as the pavilion. ... We can say, now your brand initially was being seen by 10K. Now your brand is being seen by hundreds of thousands (due to the increased visibility via the SWAC Network). And so that is something that we are able to do."
➤ Ticket pricing & football scheduling: "We have an all-HBCU schedule. … Six home games. So we're going to drop the season tickets here soon because six home games, I'll tell you up front it's going to be a little bit more. Yesterday's price is not today's price."
➤ As for potential for facility naming rights: "The naming rights, we're looking at the event center and the pavilion, again, massaging these relationships that have been had. We have a lot of new businesses coming here to Huntsville and so we are strategic in how we're doing it. ... And if you know somebody... let me know. It could be the Crutchfield Pavilion, it could be the Crutchfield Event Center. But seriously let me know. I don't mind going out talking to anyone." (link)

MS, RD, CSSD, LD, Assistant Director of Performance Nutrition,
Athletics Department, Texas A&M University
College athletic departments rely on ezCater to simplify meal operations, save administrative time, and keep student athletes ready to perform their best. ezCater gives staff centralized control and visibility into spend — while teams get reliable, nutritious meals from restaurants nationwide.
At Northeastern University, the Director of Basketball Operations uses ezCater to source healthy meals for athletes and coaches at home and on the road, saving 24+ hours per month on planning, coordination, and tasks like manual tax exemption.
For the football team at Texas Christian University, feeding 130 players daily – up to 250 when they’re on the road — required nearly 20 hours per week. ezCater replaces time-consuming tasks like researching restaurants and tracking down receipts with a centralized platform, while expanding access beyond on-campus dining options to include more variety.
For Texas A&M, an SEC program supporting more than 650 student athletes, unpredictable travel schedules mean meal timing and reliability is critical. ezCater gives staff access to tons of reliable and nutritious options to cut down on time sourcing restaurants — and even when schedules change, 24/7 support is available to ensure meals arrive on time.

Nearing his fifth anniversary with the league on Sunday, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips visited with On3’s Brett McMurphy for a Q&A to discuss a number of topics, including conference realignment, potential changes to Power 4 conference tiebreakers, football success and more. Here are some of Phillips’ most notable comments…
➤ On this year’s ACC Football success and looking to the future: “I’m proud of where we’ve taken ACC football over the last 4-5 years. It’s been a conscious and strategic decision to provide more resources to develop our plans from branding, marketing how we use the network and I think this year is reflective of that. … This season we finished with nine teams that had eight wins or more, which is a record for us. I’m not sure there’s another league that had that this past year. We finished with a really good bowl season – seven Power 4 wins which led all leagues. It’s been this steady and consistent elevation and prioritization of football and the conference. A really good year but we still know that we have work to do and we want to continue that kind of ascension.”
➤ Asked whether the ACC will alter title game tiebreakers: “Certainly. We commiserated (with the other power conference commissioners) that what happened this year could have happened to anybody and it wasn’t from a lack of effort. We had spent quite a bit of time on (the tiebreaker format) with our ADs and head football coaches, but who would have ever thought we would go to the seventh tiebreaker with five teams tied at 6-2. You live and learn, and you’re better for it.”
➤ Does he anticipate future Power 4 realignment in the next 4-6 years? “No one really knows. I do believe there’s been a re-stabilization after a period of expansion. We have 18 great schools, 17 that play football. Our expansion was additive. We did not lose any schools and we garnered two new areas, which really were important to us to get into the state of Texas and the state of California with SMU, Cal and Stanford. It now allows us a national footprint spanning coast-to-coast. … No one’s naive not to think that there couldn’t be future expansion. It’s just the history of college sports. What you want to continue to do is pay attention to your league and your schools. Continue to be a place that your schools want to be in and are proud members of, and that’s what we’ve done. No one knows what the future holds, but we’ll continue to be aggressive. We’ll continue to be innovative in how we’ve generated revenue and distributed revenue and how we’ve branded and marketed our schools and our programs.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork recently visited one-on-one with Land-Grant Holy Land’s Thomas Costello for a Q&A to discuss Buckeyes Women’s Basketball and women’s athletics as a whole. Key takeaways from Bjork…
➤ What he’s learned since direct player payments began: “Most programs in the country are giving some revenue share allocation to women’s basketball. We want to be as aggressive as we can with that revenue share allocation. I think we’re in the game, you know, near the top, within the Big Ten and around the country, and so continue to invest, because if that’s what’s attracting the better players in this environment, you got to have the right culture, but you also need resources, because that’s reality.”
➤ On the increase in 2026-27 women's basketball season ticket prices: “We can pay the athletes directly through revenue sharing. Well, that’s a line item in the budget. So we need to have revenue to just offset new expenses. Look for women’s basketball in particular. We want to make sure that we can travel effectively. We played at Iowa on Sunday. We’re in a snowstorm. They were able to get back here Sunday night because we had a charter flight for them, right? And so just having that kind of first class experience for the athlete.”
➤ Asked about the Buckeyes’ commitment to women’s sports: “When we talk to a young lady about all the opportunities you have to connect with companies, because they’re going to be here when we host a big event like the women’s basketball Final Four, or in December of 2027 a women’s volleyball Final Four, it just speaks to this is the stage that you want to be on as a high profile athlete, A women’s sports athlete. When you couple the mayor’s initiative with the robust community, with Ohio State the ability to host these events, it’s just really a perfect combination of what these athletes typically look for. And education, by the way.” (link)

Otro Capital has closed its debut fund with $1.2B in commitments—surpassing its $500M target—as Co-Founder Alec Scheiner outlined a strategy to target cash-flow positive businesses in sectors like youth sports and college athletics where the firm can be an "active investor" with governance rights. Avoiding passive minority stakes in major North American pro leagues, the fund has already deployed capital into Alpine Racing (F1), Two Circles, and FlexWork Sports, and, as reported, has reached an agreement to invest in Utah Athletics’ Utah Brands & Entertainment. Scheiner notes the firm's operational background is well-suited for the collegiate landscape, telling SBJ’s Chris Smith: "It’s obvious that collegiate sports is going through a transformation, and we believe that groups that have operational experience and backgrounds could be able to help universities and colleges navigate this new terrain." Scheiner declined to comment specifically on Otro’s investment in Utah Brands & Entertainment. (link)

The WAC filed a lawsuit against Utah Valley in a Tarrant County (TX) District Court on Monday seeking UVU “to pay a contractually obligated exit fee in the amount of $1M,” which the lawsuit states Utah Valley has refused to pay. Per the suit: “UVU did not comply and failed to make the required exit fee payment, which rendered UVU a member institution not in good standing. As a result, among other consequences, UVU is not permitted to participate in conference championship events, NCAA championship events, and/or appear on Conference-sponsored television, radio, or other media packages.” Utah Valley is headed to the Big West effective July 1, 2026.
