Florida AD Scott Stricklin covered topics on the Sports Scene with Steve Russell, including the ongoing debate about the College Football Playoff format, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium renovations, the Gators’ Football HC search and more. Here is Stricklin in his own words…
➤ On the frustration regarding the lack of CFP expansion: "The math for what we are trying to do does not work. ... Of the 70 power conference schools, there's 11 that get a chance right now to go play in the postseason. So just as a percentage, you're talking about 13-15% for the most important sport we have. ... I think we should do away with conference championship games. I think we should have a 24- or 32-team field. I know that sounds egregious to some people but at that point you would be accommodating about half about 50% of the teams at the power conference level."
➤ As for Ben Hill Griffin Stadium renovations: "We have completed design development. … Before we move forward with that, there's two things we're going to [do]. … One is we're going to hire an independent estimator to look at the costs that our contractor has brought to us. A lot of escalation, a lot of inflation in general in construction. ... My hope and expectation is in 2026 we'll be able to share what the plans are and talk about that with an eye on potentially beginning in January ‘27."
➤ On the necessity of aggressive revenue generation: "We have to all be really aggressive and really deliberate about how we're generating resources. And this past fall we brought in a chief commercial officer, a guy named Michael Ceilley from pro sports and and his number one task is go find and drive and maximize the revenue streams that are coming in to support the Florida Gators because there's a direct correlation to the resources you generate that you can then turn around and reinvest back into your programs."
➤ Finally, Stricklin’s perspective on the unexpected positive impact of NIL on student-athlete behavior: "I actually feel like this NIL world, whether people like it or not, I actually think it has caused college athletes to be more accountable and responsible than at any time before. ... GPAs are up, silly college-type immature acts are down. And I do think the idea that these young people are making money, they understand they have to be accountable or they'll lose the opportunity to make money." (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joined the Buckeye Talk podcast to discuss the future of the Big Ten football schedule, where the Buckeyes stand on jersey patch partnerships, and more. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ On the problem with setting conference schedules four years out: "When that schedule was announced four years ago, who would have known? Indiana, Illinois is better. USC was just bursting on the scenes as a Big Ten member. ... I think what should happen is we shouldn't set schedules four years out. We should have a yearly recalibration. You're always going to protect your rivalry games, but look how the NFL does it. They get it right."
➤ Bjork advocates for a 14-week regular season: "In my mind, we should have a 14-week schedule every year where you have two bye weeks. ... I don't understand the difference between playing on August 31st one year versus August 29th another year, but we can't do that because that's Week Zero. That's another conversation about the calendar."
➤ Nuances of the strict branding requirements for a jersey patch: "We would say there can be an alternate color. We would say, 'Let’s talk about a white color or a gray color.' Let's just put it that way because we have some prominent companies right here in Columbus that have blue in their colors."
➤ Continuing to commit to 36 sports despite financial pressure: "As we sit here today, yes, we can support 36 sports. ... We're going to continue to be smart, but also push on the revenue side because we need all those resources to keep those 36 sports. We're confident in the plan and that's a priority. That's a commitment from the university level as well. That's not just me saying that." (link)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would be willing to help college football solve some of its issues if asked: “There’s obviously a lot of change going on and a lot of disruption, and they do need to bring some clarity to that. And I think that’s something that, if for some reason we could be helpful with the right people, we would obviously be willing to engage with anybody. But I think we try to stay in our lane unless we’re invited in to be part of the solution.” Goodell also believes NFL’s eligibility rules are good for the league, the players and college sports, and said: “We keep a close eye on this. I think our eligibility rule is really good for young men who play our sport. It gives them a chance to mature and get an education, which will benefit them for a lifetime. I also think [the rules] develop stars. They come in as stars, and I think the strength of college is something that I think is good for all of us.” (link)

Radford has extended AD Robert Lineburg’s contract through June 2028, according to CollegeAD, which reports the new deal will officially take effect on June 25, 2026. Lineburg’s salary will increase to $231,965 with the opportunity for increases. Should the school part ways with Lineburg without cause, it would owe him 12 months’ salary. Should Lineburg leave for another DI position, he must make “commercially reasonable efforts” to schedule home-and-home series in men’s and women’s basketball with his new institution within two years. North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, the sole college AD on the USOPC Board of Directors, emphasized the critical role of the collegiate model in fueling Team USA's success, noting that 75% of American athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics were current or former student-athletes. He adds: “It’s a great asset for our country, but there’s worry about the changes in college athletics. With revenue share, NIL, things like that, the USOPC is very concerned schools will start dropping Olympic sports." Cunningham also notes that “we’re all advocates in Washington, D.C., to try to figure out a way for colleges to continue to offer broad-based programming, but financially it’s becoming more difficult." (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen says the men’s basketball team “will get a significant percentage increase of the rev share dollars” and acknowledges multiple players will likely be sought after by other programs once the season ends. “That’s what happens when you win. And then you also want to build around them with more talent." Dannen also says of the atmosphere around the team’s 20-2 start: “Everybody’s talking about the next game — as soon as the last game is over, they can’t wait for the next game. … You can just tell, the energy in the building, they’re into the game, trying to will the team to win.” Dannen on Huskers HC Fred Hoiberg: “He got the right staff for what works here for the player he was going to recruit. That’s important. What works at Nebraska? It may not be what works for a school in the South, a school in the West or a school in the Northeast. You play to your strengths, and that’s what he’s done. Build a good staff and recruit the right players.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “LSU has resolved its inquiry from the College Sports Commission related to athletes not reporting NIL deals, the school says. As noted Friday, several universities have received CSC inquiry letters, many for trivial matters or misunderstandings that are fairly quickly resolved.” LSU notes the matter was adjudicated without disciplinary action, “and any deals that require submission to NIL Go have been submitted.” (link)

CollegeSports.jobs surpassed the NCAA Market in total job postings for the month of January. While the NCAA’s job board has seen a steady decline—dropping from 286 postings in January of 2023 to just 135 in 2026—CollegeSports.jobs hit a new high of 182 postings last month. This data confirms an industry-wide migration toward the D1.ticker and College.town ecosystem as the primary hub for talent acquisition. With year-over-year growth across every division (including a 22% jump in DI roles), the shift confirms that the industry's top decision-makers have moved their talent search to where they already spend their time -- across the College.town portfolio. North Carolina Senior Assoc. AD/CFO Martina Ballen, who retired this week after a 38-year tenure that saw the department's budget grow from $16M to over $180M, reflects on her career with SBJ’s Mary Gaughan. Ballen, the first African American athletics administrator in UNC history, joined the department in the late 1980s as director of finance and was promoted to CFO in 2011. Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham praised her as the "heart and soul of the operation," adding: “The coaches trusted her, they believed her. She was firm, but fair… empathetic, but also creative enough to try to find solutions.” For her part, Ballen explains that managing budgets often meant managing emotion, and she learned not to take it personally. “I learned to handle it with grace, not be intimidated. I don’t try to tell you how to coach your sport. You don’t need to try to tell me how to do my job.” As she moves into retirement, Ballen hopes she’s served as an example of what’s possible for those who may feel overlooked. “In many cases, especially for people like me, you can’t be it unless you see it. If you can see that it’s done, then you think, ‘Oh, well then I can be that.’” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams report that Michigan set an all-time FBS record for a public university by generating $67.6M in football ticket revenue for FY25, snapping Ohio State’s ($67M) streak atop the category that dated back to 2018. The Wolverines benefited from hosting eight home games in 2024 at the Big House—the nation's largest stadium—averaging 110,548 fans per contest. Overall, the U-M athletic department reported $261.6M in expenses, including $87.1M for coaching/staff compensation and $13.7M for travel. (link)
|
Sportico’s Daniel Libit also reports that Florida State closed FY25 with $437M in debt, a $200M increase YoY that likely makes FSU the most heavily leveraged public FBS department. The surge, attributed by Deputy AD/CFO Josh Turner to revenue bonds for Doak Campbell Stadium renovations and a new football operations center, represents a 2,465% uptick in athletics-related debt since FY20 ($17M). Concurrently, Libit notes total expenditures rose 22.6% to $208.2M, with campus subsidies covering roughly 16% of the budget—including a jump in direct institutional support to $33.9M (up from just ~$107K in FY24), which Turner said supported Title IX, athlete expenses, and legal fees tied to the now-settled ACC litigation. The House Committee on Education and Workforce has reached out to Utah to schedule a briefing on the school’s plans to accept private equity funding from Otro Capital, per Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, who notes the group is “examining the growing trend of schools seeking institutional partners to capitalize their athletic departments” and “assessing whether legislative action might be needed to address concerns about the downstream impact of these deals.” The committee has requested the university share terms of the arrangement and answer three specific questions: what factors and considerations led the university to pursue this partnership, and why was this approach selected over other potential financing options?; what steps is the university taking to maintain institutional control and to protect student-athlete welfare, including compliance with Title IX under this partnership structure?; and how might this partnership affect student costs, particularly with respect to mandatory student fees that subsidize the athletic department, and are any changes to the fee structure anticipated following implementation? The recent rash of indictments over alleged college basketball point-shaving “seems unlikely to prompt immediate wholesale changes within the NCAA,” per Law360’s Alex Lawson, who notes the organization has used the incidents “to highlight its existing enforcement policies, while also acknowledging that more must be done, even if the most pressing changes lie not in its own hands, but those of state regulators and lawmakers.” Here are notable comments from association leaders…
➤ NCAA Managing Director of Enterprise Risk Management Clint Hangebrauk: “There's only so much that's within our control. A lot of where we feel there is significant change that needs to happen to enhance the integrity of the games is really those in power of the betting markets to take a risk-based look of what's being offered there and try to look at those riskiest bets and get them off the market.”
➤ NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement Mark Hicks said the organization “has focused on making education free and accessible to all schools, including low/mid-major schools,” noting the enormity of the allegations will spark a dialogue between the organization and its member schools that will inform how these issues are tackled going forward.”
➤ Hicks adds: “We absolutely want to apply lessons learned to strategies that we have moving forward. [The indictments] will raise awareness, it will heighten the sense of importance. I think moments like this continue to galvanize people around the importance of staying vigilant and protecting the integrity of competition. That will drive some change in itself. I think it does start with truly understanding what happened.” (link)

San Francisco 49ers President Al Guido is now serving as the organization’s CEO, taking over from principal owner Jed York, who’d held the title since 2010. Guido, who also concurrently serves as Elevate Sports Ventures CEO/Chairman, said the title bump is symbolic of the next era of the 49ers’ business growth, as the team looks to expand its international fan base and make the most of its strong current position in the NFL. Color Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg impressed by the effort OSU’s club hockey team has put in to lift its profile over the past few years. However, he suggests there’s little financial room for the program to maneuver toward a Division I move. Weiberg: “They've created a great organization with significant backing and have become one of the best club teams in the country. The club is committed to adding value to OSU, not taking from existing resources, which I appreciate. The athletic department and the hockey club share a desire to innovate and to help propel the university into the future.” The department operating at roughly a $5.2M loss in FY25 suggests the university isn’t in position to add a non-revenue varsity sport that would likely also raise some Title IX issues that would need to be addressed. Even with a large donation up front to start the program, the longevity of such an endeavor would still be costly. More. (link)

Oklahoma’s athletic department reported a $43.7M deficit in FY25, per Tulsa World’s Mason Young, who notes university officials “attribute the deficit largely to a one-time dip in conference revenue distribution associated with OU’s move from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference.” The Sooners received just $12.5M during their initial year in the league, $47M less than their full-share peers, and utilized reserves to cover the deficit. Overall, operating revenues fell slightly from $208.8M in FY24 to $205.6M in FY25, while operating expenses rose significantly from $206.1M (FY24) to $249.4M (FY25). Oklahoma managed to post record years in both fundraising ($92.9M) and ticket sales ($54.5M). Football was the only sport to turn a FY25 profit, producing just over $61.6M in revenue, down from $71M in 2024. Young: “One of OU’s major expenses stemmed from its decision to merge its name, image and likeness fundraising collective, 1Oklahoma, with Sooner Sports Properties, the local division of multimedia rightsholder Learfield, streamlining efforts to generate NIL partnerships for athletes.” More. Oregon State athletics operated at a surplus for the second consecutive year despite bringing in $15M less in revenue in FY25, according to The Oregonian’s James Crepea, who notes OSU reported total revenues of $104.76M against expenses of $100.3M. Overall, the school’s $4.46M surplus during its initial year in both the depleted Pac-12 and the WCC was down from $7.43M in FY24. Crepea: “While Oregon State reported significant increases in revenue from direct state or other government support and direct institutional support compared to 2024, its revenue from media rights dropped from $34,050,500 while in the old Pac-12 to just $3,015,108. Its biggest decline in expenses came from an all-encompassing category of other operating expenses, which includes non-team travel, team banquets and awards and other miscellaneous categories, from $11,634,817 in 2024 to $267,877 last year. … OSU football revenue dropped from $49,178,636 to $31,096,301 due almost entirely to a total loss of media rights revenue from over $21M in 2024. The program’s net profit dropped from $23.2M to $7.25M.” More. (link)

Thirty-one former NC State student-athletes have joined a lawsuit accusing university officials of of “not protecting the men from a trainer’s alleged sexual abuse and harassment on campus,” according to the Herald Sun’s Virginia Bridges, who notes the amended suit is part of a legal fight that started in 2022, when former Wolfpack soccer player Benjamin Locke filed a federal lawsuit accusing then-AD Debbie Yow and other NC State leaders of failing to protect him and other athletes from sexual abuse and harassment by Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer Robert Murphy. From the lawsuit: “Instead, administrators and staff in the Athletics Department chose to protect Murphy and the reputation of the institution by minimizing, condoning, ignoring and/or covering up his sexual assaults and harassment and the abusive culture that existed.” Bridges: “University attorneys have vigorously challenged the allegations in court filings. They contend that Murphy’s reported behavior wasn’t concerning enough to merit an investigation, and the people with the authority to take action weren’t told.” Murphy has denied all allegations and never been criminally charged in the matter.
