West Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Huggins has resigned after his DUI on Friday night. Huggins: “I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community – particularly to the student-athletes, coaches and staff in our program. I must do better, and I plan to spend the next few months focused on my health and my family so that I can be the person they deserve.” (link - WVU release, link - full police report); Sports Illustrated’s Forde adds: “WVU search will be national and focus on a full-time replacement, not an interim. While there is risk that some new transfers in could turn around and leave, keeping the roster intact will not be as important as the right long-term coaching fit. Keeping the NIL war chest that had been accrued will be important for the next coach. Huggins had donor support for keeping his job after the May radio fiasco, but most of that disappeared Saturday. The arrest was a breaking point.” (link)

The latest from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on potential Pac-12 expansion, which could include San Diego State & SMU, as well as the league’s new media deal: “I am told by sources that the Pac-12 had the potential media-rights partners model deals that included both San Diego State and SMU. No surprise there. I am told the conference ‘looked at every scenario’ by a source. The Pac-12 even asked potential partners for media models that involved UCLA. [...] The Pac-12 is losing 5.7 million TV homes in one unfortunate swoop with USC and UCLA leaving. Adding SMU and San Diego State helps replace that divot with a combined 4.1 million homes. [...] Would the Pac-12 add San Diego State via expansion but not SMU? Maybe, but I find it increasingly unlikely. A source on campus at the Dallas-based institution told me the Pac-12 continued to engage with SMU after the Kliavkoff visit. Unless I am missing something, the media-rights range I keep hearing doesn’t work without the DFW television households included. Also, SMU is so intensely motivated to join that it would definitely join at a discount. As one well-placed source at SMU told me on Friday morning: ‘My sense continues to be that we will be included if they expand.’” (link)

SBJ’s Ourand and the New York Post’s Marchand discuss the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations, and Marchand lists several potential partners and their likelihoods: “ESPN unlikely, Amazon unlikely, CBS no, NBC/USA no, Fox no. Then, you get into Apple, they’re a little bit of a wildcard. I’ve heard certain things but nothing definitively where I’m 100% sure where it stands with Apple, but I lean towards probably not. … That leaves the CW, Scripps and those types of players.” Ourand adds that his sources denied previous reports that the Pac-12 was in talks with the CW and Scripps, making Washington State’s President Schulz’s remarks that a deal could come in the next couple weeks puzzling. “We can report what we know, but we can’t report what we don’t know, and what we know is when you went down that roster…I’m not sure if ESPN’s a no. They’re just sort of not a yes for a big package.” Marchand backtracks slightly, acknowledging that an ESPN deal is possible but for “low money. … I would be very surprised if they got the same deal as the Big 12 from ESPN.” Ourand: “They would have to cobble a lot of different pieces together in order to get that.” (link)

Kansas Executive Assoc. AD/CFO Kaufman says the Jayhawks will finish FY23 with $115M in revenue, higher than the expected $109M and resulting in a “modest surplus.” Per KUSports.com’s Greenstein: “the Kansas Athletics Board of Directors bet on additional football growth Friday and approved at its quarterly meeting a break-even budget of $127 million for the fiscal year 2024.” (link); Meanwhile, KU AD Goff comments on fundraising efforts: “We’re on the cusp, as we get toward the end and through the end of the summer, I think to really announce a series of gifts that may be unrivaled in KU’s history. At least, that’s what we believe is the trajectory there.” (link)

Florida State Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Varytimidis and Georgia Tech Executive Assoc. AD/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator Akin join AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz to share insight into their roles as sport administrators and the lessons they’ve learned from sport oversight duties. Akin and Varytimidis dissect how their experiences as student-athletes and coaches inform their interactions with coaches and student-athletes and include among their keys to success for sport administrators embracing active listening, communicating transparently and having a holistic onboarding process for new coaches. On the topic of learning sports they aren’t familiar with, Varytimidis explains that she now oversees swimming and diving for the first time, so she is intentional about getting to practices and asking questions of both coaches and student-athletes. “If you’re going to help and be a resource for the coaches and the student-athletes, you’re going to have to build that trust and build that communication.” Akin adds that when balancing a coach’s request with the long-term needs of the department that it’s important to understand the reason. “In these conversations with the coaches, I might learn a way that we can maybe partner with a couple other sports or there’s a bigger need for the entire department. … And it all goes back to listening – active listening.” Full interview. Wake Forest won a thriller yesterday in Omaha over Stanford and SBJ’s Joyce deep dives into the Pitching Lab for the Demon Deacons, which “produced the best team K/9 rate (12.2) and ERA in college baseball — 2.84, almost a full run lower than No. 2 Tennessee (3.63) — as well as the ACC’s back-to-back pitcher of the year in Rhett Lowder.” There are two sets of motion capture cameras, about 25 in total, markered cameras and markerless cameras, a high-frame-rate camera and force plates on the mound. There are 20 members of the data analytics team, all students, that help decipher the numbers for Deacs Director of Player Development/Pitching Lab Coordinator McFerran and the staff. The $14M space is co-owned by the athletic department and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Lots more on the data and statistical improvements for the team. (link)

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has proposed that when pushing off the pitcher's plate, both feet of pitchers could disengage from the playing surface during their delivery, starting in the 2023-24 academic year. “Under the proposal, the pitcher's pivot foot could become airborne with one push from the pitcher's plate. However, pitchers would not be allowed to replant their pivot foot, resulting in pushing off from a second point and the pitcher being farther away from the pitcher's plate. Committee members think whether the pivot foot stays in contact with the ground or is airborne, there is no advantage gained by the pitcher.” Also up for debate is the obstruction by a defensive player, deemed as such if said player blocks any part of the leading edge of any base or otherwise blocks the runner from advancing or returning to a base. The committee also recommended expanding video review, options regarding the visible action clock and more. The Playing Rules Oversight Panel will discuss via videoconference August 10. (link)

Arkansas will reallocate resources and staff from its Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to Student Success, Student Affairs, Human Resources, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance and University Advancement “so that these areas can expand programs around access, opportunity and developing a culture of belonging for all students and employees,” according to Chancellor Robinson, who explains: “It is my belief based on my experience as having served as Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Provost — and now as Chancellor — that we can accomplish better outcomes by reallocating resources into these essential areas.” (link)

NCAA President Baker joins Fox Sports/Connect’s Fischer from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss his continued engagement with federal lawmakers, his first 100 days in the position, structural changes the NCAA needs, the issue of student-athletes as employees and more. One underreported challenge facing college sports, Baker tells Fischer, is the diminishing supply of officials across all levels. To address the issue, the NCAA retained Bain & Company, which found that tens of thousands of officials simply stopped officiating after the pandemic. Bain also found that, rather than pay or travel, most officials leave the industry because of the behavior of coaches and the behavior of parents and fans. Baker also says numerous stakeholders have identified gambling-related issues as major concerns, particularly as it relates to the treatment of student-athletes. “I’ve had kids show me some of the stuff that showed up on their phones that was tagged to them after a game. I’m 66 years old. I got elected when I was 58. I’m a grownup. I knew what I was getting into. When hundreds of people send me nasty [posts] I don’t really care that much. I think for kids it’s a completely different challenge.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. (link)

More from NCAA President Baker, who tells the Boston Globe’s Grossfeld why the NCAA wants a registry, certification of agents and standard contracts for NIL deals. “You can’t have 50 states doing 50 different things in this mad race to the bottom. I’ve also had reporters who cover college sports tell me they don’t write stories about NIL because they can’t believe anything anybody says to them. I mean, that’s how opaque and almost mythological this whole thing has become.” He also likens the transfer portal to a “bad sci-fi movie,” saying: “Almost half of the kids who go into the transfer portal — which everybody says is overused — don’t land anywhere because they’re getting pulled in on rumor and hearsay and misinformation and there really isn’t a place for them to land on the other side.” Asked whether his new job is more fun than governing Massachusetts, Baker responds: “I would say I’m pretty sure it will be more fun a year from now than it is now. Why don’t we leave it at that? I want to do this job, and I want to do it well. Membership depending, I’m going to be here for a while.” (link)

ESPN College GameDay host Davis on the podcast of the same name takes exception with the position that the College Football Playoff Selection Committee should “send a message” for only playing eight conference games. “No, they don’t. That’s not their job. Their job is to evaluate. Now, within that context of evaluation, if the strength of schedule is deemed insufficient, then that's a marker against you and it hurts your overall body of work. Just because you play X number of games against Power 5 opponents or X number of conference games, well that's not created equal. It never will be.” Meanwhile, ESPN’s Thamel submits three names he believes would be effective at overseeing college football in the event such a position were to become open: outgoing Notre Dame AD Swarbrick, former NCAA EVP for Regulatory Affairs Luck, and Wake Forest Football HC Clawson “if it happened further down the road.” On Swarbrick: “I think he’s looking for some kind of big challenge, and he’s a big brain. He’s regarded as having probably the highest intellect in the space.” (link)

+ The D1.dossier for the opening at USC is now ready for review. Ball State AD Mitchell: “Possessing information lacks true value if it’s not pertinent, and D1.dossier offers a competitive advantage because it provides the right information to prospective candidates to help them prepare for an interview and the job itself when hired. I developed my unique outline to help get ready for my interviews at Ball State while using the D1.dossier feature. I found the information to be relevant and comprehensive. D1.dossiers is a must-have resource for college coaches and administrators.” (link); Here’s an example dossier from back when Penn State was open. (link)
+ CollegeAD indicates Louisiana Tech AD Wood is set to receive an extension that could keep him in Ruston through October of 2027. The extension comes with a retroactive $15K overall pay increase with subsequent annual $10K bumps. If the university makes a move on Wood - without cause - he’d be owed 36 months of total comp or - if a move goes down in the last 36 months of the deal - the remainder of his pay due. If Wood exits for another AD opportunity before October 31 of this year, he owes $265K, a number that goes down monthly by roughly $4.1K. (link)

The Oklahoman’s Tramel credits Cincinnati with “betting on itself” and earning a spot in the Big 12, and Bearcats AD Cunningham tells him: “We've been outperforming resources, knocking at the door. Tremendous vision by our president (Neville Pinto) and board. We were doing that whether we got an invite to the Big 12 or not. We needed it.” While it will take a while before UC can fill its coffers at the same rate as the league’s legacy members, Cunningham says the Bearcats are not waiting to invest. “You learn very quickly where you match up well with the Power Five and where you need to build. We immediately identified we have to build nutrition. We have been feeding our student-athletes, but we haven’t been fueling them. And there's science behind that. … Things we've been piece-mealing together, now we're jumping all in.” (link)

Mississippi State AD Selmon is happy with the Bulldogs’ 2024 football conference schedule, which maintains the Egg Bowl and adds trips to venues fans haven’t had the opportunity to see in years. Selmon also hopes fans can maintain an open mind regarding the loss of SEC West opponents they have become accustomed to playing. “Everybody wants to continue to maintain rivalries and traditions. But also the nature of our business has changed. The economics have changed and we have to be able to continue to keep the lights on, if you will. With that, you want to have games like Ole Miss every year. We want to preserve those rivalries and to get some new things. Sometimes you gotta be open-minded to get some new things.” (link)

Sticking in Starkville, the oft-creative Mississippi State social media team strikes again, this time with the release of the Bulldogs’ 2024 conference football schedule. Using AI, MSU created a video and a graphic of its eight opponents’ mascots, and the results were, as The Athletic’s Vannini puts it, “bizarre.” He explains: “Every animal was bipedal. There was a big orange head for Tennessee, jorts on a Florida Gator and a big thumbs-up for Texas A&M, images that were immediately screenshotted and saved by fans for future meme purposes this fall.” Bulldogs Director of Creative Design Swinney says the first step was to find a base player with pads before submitting some “pretty in-depth” prompts using Adobe’s new AI beta app. From there, the team added some of its own touches. Swinney: “Florida, I did, ‘Orange and blue gator,’ it gave me that, and I was like, what makes Florida a little more Florida? People say stuff about the jean shorts, so I added a pair of jorts on top of it. With Texas A&M, their mascot is a human and AI is terrible with humans. So that one actually isn’t AI. I had to find a thumb and make it a person.” On Tennessee’s “big orange,” the Gator with jean shorts and the Texas A&M thumb, Swinney notes: “When I saw those, I knew they’d be big hits. The reaction we got was exactly what we were hoping for.” More on the Bulldogs’ creative process. (link)

An update on UCF’s request of $176.6M from the county’s Tourist Development Tax Citizen Advisory Task Force to send the Athletics Village project into hyperdrive. The request, if approved, would fund the majority of the ~$270M Mission XII initiative over a decade-long period. UCF President Cartwright added: “We don’t just want to enter into the Power 5, we want to enter into the Power 5 and be big time, and to do that quickly.” Context from the Orlando Sentinel’s Weiner: “Members didn’t indicate support or opposition to any projects, though they had the most questions for the UCF proposal […] Friday was the last scheduled session for the task force to listen to pitches; members now are expected to assess the projects on their potential for tourism expansion, their soundness and the anticipated return on the county’s investment. The panel will next convene on June 26.” (link, link) Renderings. (link)

Nebraska softball had 365 season ticket holders in 2023 and a waitlist of 26. Since Oklahoma pitcher Bahl announced she will transfer to NU to continue her career in Lincoln, the school has taken 2,124 requests to join the waitlist for season tickets. Bahl, a Nebraska native, grew up less than an hour from campus. She had originally committed to the Cornhuskers as a high school freshman before signing with OU. (link)

Wake Forest Men’s Basketball HC Forbes scheduled a Friday morning press conference to specifically address the situation surrounding former Demon Deacons MBB student-athlete Klintman: “I felt for quite some time the disrespectful behavior by Bobi Klintman’s agent towards me, my staff and Wake Forest University. It is something our fans and college coaches need to be aware of. I’ve discussed this situation with several of my peers in college basketball, agents in the United States and all over the world and with NBA personnel to get their advice regarding what took place with Bobi and his agent. … I was very upfront and honest about the disingenuous facade of this agent signing him to an NIL deal with no intentions of helping him generate any NIL income. Instead his only intention was to control Bobi’s draft decision and shop him to other college coaches. … What my staff and I experienced trying to work with Bobi Klintman’s agent was by far and away the worst experience I have ever been a part of attempting to work with one of my player’s agents. He was deceitful, he was conniving and he was underhanded. His agent did everything in his power to undermine me, my staff and Wake Forest University regarding the future of Bobi Klintman, leading to his decision to not return to college.” Klintman has withdrawn from the draft and will compete in Australia next year. The agent in question is Michael Tellem of Excel Sports Agency. (link)
