#8: “Good coaches celebrate outcomes. Great coaches celebrate people and processes. That’s what we’re doing here.” That’s how Oberlin AD Natalie Winkelfoos describes the process of building the Yeomen football program and developing student-athletes. HC John Pont tells Extra Points’ Matt Brown: “Every team that wins a championship is a close-knit group. It’s a family-like bond. So we’re very purposeful in trying to build that. When you build it the right way, when you do things the right way, when you surround yourself with the right people, the scoreboard will end up taking care of itself. It just takes time. … The scores might not necessarily reflect who we are as a team, but I promise you, when you turn on the film, and you're around our sideline, you're around our team, you'll feel a tremendous difference. And so the progress, to me, you know, is evident in who we're recruiting, how we're recruiting, and the growth and experience of our guys.” Winkelfoos adds: “I think that the competitive advantage that they have is that they're going to have more fun than the other team. Like, that's annoying when you're playing, and you know that the other team is just so joyful. It's like, why are they so happy? But that is their mental mindset, and it's so cool to see that they just refuse to be defined by the external noise. They care so deeply, and there's a refusal to be miserable and succumb to what outsiders want us to believe about ourselves. It's impressive.” (link)

#7: Medgar Evers will hire new HCs in both men’s and women’s soccer. (link)

#6: Bard has raised the $500M to match the challenge by Open Society Founder George Soros to create a $1B endowment for the college. President Leon Botstein tells the Times Union’s Kathleen Moore the college will launch a new fundraising campaign soon to push that endowment to $1.5-2B. Botstein: “Over the next 10 years, the budgets of these (liberal arts) institutions will be increasingly dependent on endowment and philanthropic income. In a rational system, a country of our prosperity, a college or university — from vocational to liberal arts — should be essentially affordable throughout the population, which it’s not.” (link)

#5: Elizabethtown Women’s Soccer HC Amy Hough steps down after a decade to focus on her family. (link)

#4: Lehman hires CCNY Asst. AD for Compliance/SWA Karina Jorge as its new Assoc. AD. (link)

#3: Ithaca partners with Wegmans to support its refueling station, which opened this week. (ink)

#2: Lynchburg has been placed on probation for one year and is subject to a $1,500 fine after improperly awarding over $155K in financial aid in 2022-23. Per the Committee on Infractions: “At the time of the violations, Lynchburg held scholarship competitions called Scholarship Days in which all admitted students had the opportunity to earn additional financial aid based on criteria unrelated to athletics participation. Lynchburg traditionally held Scholarship Days during both the fall and spring semesters. Based on the timing of their acceptance to the school, student-athletes typically attended these events during the fall semester, while non-student-athletes attended during the spring. Lynchburg canceled the program after the fall 2021 semester without offering a comparable financial aid opportunity in the spring. Due to the timing of the cancellation, 78% of the incoming 2022-23 students who received aid via the program were student-athletes.” (link)

#1: Marietta AD Larry Hiser will retire at the end of May after 18 years leading the Pioneers. President Kathleen Dougherty: “Larry's work with athletics has been a contributing factor to the growth of Marietta College's reputation for competitive teams and excellent facilities. He has spent many hours at fields and arenas supporting our student athletes and coaches and is a ambassador for the College in our Community. I am grateful for his tireless efforts to support Pioneer athletics.” (link)
