More from NCAA President Baker’s sitdown with Fox Sports/Connect’s Fischer, as Baker explains why he took the job. “The answer is I played basketball at Harvard, my brother was a baseball player at Princeton, my wife was a gymnast at Northwestern, two of our kids played DIII football. I’m a huge fan of what college sports means to young people. And the vast majority of college sports is not on TV on New Year’s Day. In fact, it’s not even on TV at all. In fact, 90% of those 520K athletes will probably never play on TV. But that doesn’t mean the lessons that are learned – the teamwork, the accountability, the getting up when you get knocked down – all those lessons, they’re learning all those same lessons.” Baker says he’s talked to over 1,000 student-athletes, none of whom want to be employees, and when Fischer points out that it might be outside their control, Baker remarks: “But their voice ought to matter a little here, and I think in some respects their voice really isn’t part of the conversation and that’s unfortunate.” Baker cites the recent SAAC letters in which student-athletes indicated they do not want to be employees, “and they had some really good reasons for why they felt that way. I’m sure there are student-athletes who would be okay with that idea. … [But] 90% of student-athletes aren’t living high off the hog, if you want to call it that. They’re investments that the schools make in the educational experience of their students, and I really do believe that people haven’t thought very hard about what the consequences of this idea would be.” Full Q&A. Georgia AD Brooks talks with The Athletic’s Emerson about his commitment to a broad-based athletic department, telling him: “I’ll be talking with other ADs, stressing over the LEARFIELD (Directors’ Cup) standings, and they’ll laugh at me, ‘Oh you won a football championship.’ Yes that’s great, and, of course, we want to win a championship in football and what people would consider the bigger sports. I’m wired that I just want to win in everything we do.” Brooks on his approach to new facilities on campus: “Facilities are a business decision at the end of the day. It’s a value proposition when you think about it. Stegeman’s in great shape. The roof’s in great shape; we have a great repair (going on). I think when we reopen it, everyone’s going to see and be really impressed with the look. … You’ve got to balance out that Stegeman has great bones, and you can maybe put, I don’t know, $20, $30, $40M into it — I’m just throwing out numbers — versus a $300M new facility.” (link)

The News & Observer’s Carter examines Wake Forest’s place in the changing landscape, noting that despite Wake being the “nation’s smallest major-conference school,” the Demon Deacons have a long track record of success. Deacs AD Currie: “Every moment in the history of time, there was no way Wake Forest was going to be able to do it. And every time we’ve done it and again, here we are, 2023, the strongest we’ve ever been, and much stronger, comparatively, with the whole deal than many other schools, in our league and other leagues.” Currie goes on to say of the baseball team’s current run to the College World Series: “It’s not an accident.” He cites several investments the department has made in the program, including stadium upgrades and the creation of a data- and analytics-driven pitching lab. “This is not the Little Engine That Could. This is a jet engine. And it’s a jet engine with intentional investment on all those factors that will make Wake Forest strong.” Overall, Currie tells Carter: “You control the controllables. … We have made a huge institutional investment in football at Wake Forest. We’ve invested over $110M in new facilities in the last seven years. We’re about to open up a brand new $38-$40M locker room. We’ve won the second or third or fourth most games in the ACC in the last seven years. We have the second-longest bowl streak in the ACC. So if [a new funding model] is based on on-field success, I’m good with that model.” (link)

Vanderbilt AD Lee joins Kennesaw State COO Smith Jones at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss her career journey, including the importance of professional development and executive coaching for first-time ADs as well as the impact former Vanderbilt AD David Williams had on her trajectory. Lee also identifies the need for a high level of self-awareness and the ability to cultivate strong relationships as key qualities for successful leaders. Lee notes that college athletics as an industry is “big on categories, and we build a lot of assumptions on categories.” And while there are different challenges associated with different situations, “if you can build relationships, if you have a solid set of core values, if you're ready to work your butt off, if you know how to manage up, down and around, if you know how to lead people, if you are committed to developing student-athletes and staff, then you can do any job.” Lee also echoes three things Vandy Chancellor Diermeier says he seeks when selecting leaders: domain expertise, a desire to collaborate, and the ability to have an enterprise-wide perspective. “I love that because…those are some high-level foundational things that I think if you have that, we can teach you the rest.” Full conversation on AthleticDirectorU. The Athletic’s Mandel and Bardahl examine Maryland’s football terrain in a newly redeveloped Big Ten, and while several observe UMD has the resources and location it needs to set the program up for success, Terps HC Locksley points out that the changing landscape – particularly NIL – adds a new obstacle. “I feel like I’ve got my legs cut from underneath me. Because my strength in recruiting isn’t some slick salesman job, it’s built on the longevity of relationships. And now the way the college landscape is with the NIL, the transfer portal — everything is pretty much transactional, and relationships have kind of gone out of the window.” Terps AD Evans also weighs in: “Do I think we can compete for Big Ten championships at Maryland? Yes, I think it’s possible. I do believe that it’s a little bit more of an uphill climb for us because we’re not ready-made as some of the other programs already established but I like the progress that we’ve made. I also understand this is going to be challenging to get to the mountaintop in the Big Ten in football.” (link)

+ Colorado Football HC Sanders may need to have his left foot amputated due to circulation issues that necessitated the amputation of two toes in 2021. Sanders allowed cameras for “Thee Pregame Show” to attend a meeting with physicians, including vascular surgeon Jacobs, who informed him: “You just have to understand what the risks are. Things can cascade.” Sanders replied: “Well, I know what the risks are. I only have eight toes. So, I'm pretty sure I understand." Sanders indicated that he has no feeling on the bottom of his left foot and would prefer that any needed procedures be done in the summer because he’ll be too busy when the season starts. (link)

The Kenosha News’ Punzel offers a glimpse of the Wisconsin volleyball team’s two-week trip through Turkey, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. Badgers HC Sheffield says Istanbul in particular was a no-brainer: “Some of the best pro teams in the world are located in Turkey. We’ve had (former) players who have played over there. It’s different than what we did last time but it makes sense. Istanbul is the population of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago combined. It’s on two continents. There’s not a lot of those. It’s such a huge city, a very old city and because you have the Asia side and the Europe side, there’s a totally different personality to each of those that we’ll be able to explore. It’s a great place to start.” Sheffield goes on to say: “The trip is part of a lot of things. First, is your school and program all the way in or not? If you’re following this program, it’s all the way in at trying to win at the highest level but also to give experiences to our players at the highest level. … Combining play and fun and learning is what college should be and these trips have each of those elements wrapped up into an experience that they’ll remember the rest of their lives.” (link)

West Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Huggins has resigned after his DUI on Friday night. Huggins: “I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community – particularly to the student-athletes, coaches and staff in our program. I must do better, and I plan to spend the next few months focused on my health and my family so that I can be the person they deserve.” (link - WVU release, link - full police report); Sports Illustrated’s Forde adds: “WVU search will be national and focus on a full-time replacement, not an interim. While there is risk that some new transfers in could turn around and leave, keeping the roster intact will not be as important as the right long-term coaching fit. Keeping the NIL war chest that had been accrued will be important for the next coach. Huggins had donor support for keeping his job after the May radio fiasco, but most of that disappeared Saturday. The arrest was a breaking point.” (link)

The latest from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on potential Pac-12 expansion, which could include San Diego State & SMU, as well as the league’s new media deal: “I am told by sources that the Pac-12 had the potential media-rights partners model deals that included both San Diego State and SMU. No surprise there. I am told the conference ‘looked at every scenario’ by a source. The Pac-12 even asked potential partners for media models that involved UCLA. [...] The Pac-12 is losing 5.7 million TV homes in one unfortunate swoop with USC and UCLA leaving. Adding SMU and San Diego State helps replace that divot with a combined 4.1 million homes. [...] Would the Pac-12 add San Diego State via expansion but not SMU? Maybe, but I find it increasingly unlikely. A source on campus at the Dallas-based institution told me the Pac-12 continued to engage with SMU after the Kliavkoff visit. Unless I am missing something, the media-rights range I keep hearing doesn’t work without the DFW television households included. Also, SMU is so intensely motivated to join that it would definitely join at a discount. As one well-placed source at SMU told me on Friday morning: ‘My sense continues to be that we will be included if they expand.’” (link)

SBJ’s Ourand and the New York Post’s Marchand discuss the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations, and Marchand lists several potential partners and their likelihoods: “ESPN unlikely, Amazon unlikely, CBS no, NBC/USA no, Fox no. Then, you get into Apple, they’re a little bit of a wildcard. I’ve heard certain things but nothing definitively where I’m 100% sure where it stands with Apple, but I lean towards probably not. … That leaves the CW, Scripps and those types of players.” Ourand adds that his sources denied previous reports that the Pac-12 was in talks with the CW and Scripps, making Washington State’s President Schulz’s remarks that a deal could come in the next couple weeks puzzling. “We can report what we know, but we can’t report what we don’t know, and what we know is when you went down that roster…I’m not sure if ESPN’s a no. They’re just sort of not a yes for a big package.” Marchand backtracks slightly, acknowledging that an ESPN deal is possible but for “low money. … I would be very surprised if they got the same deal as the Big 12 from ESPN.” Ourand: “They would have to cobble a lot of different pieces together in order to get that.” (link)

Kansas Executive Assoc. AD/CFO Kaufman says the Jayhawks will finish FY23 with $115M in revenue, higher than the expected $109M and resulting in a “modest surplus.” Per KUSports.com’s Greenstein: “the Kansas Athletics Board of Directors bet on additional football growth Friday and approved at its quarterly meeting a break-even budget of $127 million for the fiscal year 2024.” (link); Meanwhile, KU AD Goff comments on fundraising efforts: “We’re on the cusp, as we get toward the end and through the end of the summer, I think to really announce a series of gifts that may be unrivaled in KU’s history. At least, that’s what we believe is the trajectory there.” (link)

Florida State Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Varytimidis and Georgia Tech Executive Assoc. AD/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator Akin join AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz to share insight into their roles as sport administrators and the lessons they’ve learned from sport oversight duties. Akin and Varytimidis dissect how their experiences as student-athletes and coaches inform their interactions with coaches and student-athletes and include among their keys to success for sport administrators embracing active listening, communicating transparently and having a holistic onboarding process for new coaches. On the topic of learning sports they aren’t familiar with, Varytimidis explains that she now oversees swimming and diving for the first time, so she is intentional about getting to practices and asking questions of both coaches and student-athletes. “If you’re going to help and be a resource for the coaches and the student-athletes, you’re going to have to build that trust and build that communication.” Akin adds that when balancing a coach’s request with the long-term needs of the department that it’s important to understand the reason. “In these conversations with the coaches, I might learn a way that we can maybe partner with a couple other sports or there’s a bigger need for the entire department. … And it all goes back to listening – active listening.” Full interview. Wake Forest won a thriller yesterday in Omaha over Stanford and SBJ’s Joyce deep dives into the Pitching Lab for the Demon Deacons, which “produced the best team K/9 rate (12.2) and ERA in college baseball — 2.84, almost a full run lower than No. 2 Tennessee (3.63) — as well as the ACC’s back-to-back pitcher of the year in Rhett Lowder.” There are two sets of motion capture cameras, about 25 in total, markered cameras and markerless cameras, a high-frame-rate camera and force plates on the mound. There are 20 members of the data analytics team, all students, that help decipher the numbers for Deacs Director of Player Development/Pitching Lab Coordinator McFerran and the staff. The $14M space is co-owned by the athletic department and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Lots more on the data and statistical improvements for the team. (link)

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has proposed that when pushing off the pitcher's plate, both feet of pitchers could disengage from the playing surface during their delivery, starting in the 2023-24 academic year. “Under the proposal, the pitcher's pivot foot could become airborne with one push from the pitcher's plate. However, pitchers would not be allowed to replant their pivot foot, resulting in pushing off from a second point and the pitcher being farther away from the pitcher's plate. Committee members think whether the pivot foot stays in contact with the ground or is airborne, there is no advantage gained by the pitcher.” Also up for debate is the obstruction by a defensive player, deemed as such if said player blocks any part of the leading edge of any base or otherwise blocks the runner from advancing or returning to a base. The committee also recommended expanding video review, options regarding the visible action clock and more. The Playing Rules Oversight Panel will discuss via videoconference August 10. (link)

Arkansas will reallocate resources and staff from its Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to Student Success, Student Affairs, Human Resources, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance and University Advancement “so that these areas can expand programs around access, opportunity and developing a culture of belonging for all students and employees,” according to Chancellor Robinson, who explains: “It is my belief based on my experience as having served as Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Provost — and now as Chancellor — that we can accomplish better outcomes by reallocating resources into these essential areas.” (link)
