What’s Next for San Diego State?
+ The Mountain West on Friday sent an additional letter to San Diego State, informing the Aztecs that “at this time” they will not approve any of the exceptions they requested last week – namely, an additional month before departure, reduced exit fee or the ability to pay the exit fee in installments, per ESPN’s Thamel, who adds: “The Mountain West letter was in response to SDSU's assertion that it had not given formal notice of withdrawal. The conference also said it did not accept the school's claim that it had not given formal notice of resignation.” (link, link)
+ Asked whether it’s possible SDSU is enticing the Mountain West to expel them from the league, thereby reducing or eliminating the Aztecs’ exit fee, Sportico’s McCann responds: “I think the Mountain West Conference is going to sit tight and remind San Diego State it has to abide by its membership contract – if SDSU doesn't, its in breach and would be subject to litigation & paying damages – or offer conference something in return to now change their deal.” (link)
+ The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Zeigler sums up the scenario for the Aztecs: “SDSU could take a leap of faith and finalize the divorce [with the MW] by June 30 without resolution in the Pac-12, potentially saving $17M if it left later this summer. But that option is freighted with risk in the ever-volatile world of conference realignment. The Pac-12 may implode if the media rights deal is deemed inadequate and members are poached by the Big 12 or other conferences. The Pac-12 may stick together and decide against expansion. Or the Pac-12 may indeed invite SDSU but make a low-ball offer for an annual distribution share – reasoning the Aztecs, having nowhere else to go, have lost negotiating leverage.” (link)

Nevada Sports Net’s Murray identifies several potential Mountain West candidates should San Diego State leave the league. Gonzaga tops the list, though Murray notes it is “almost certainly not happening; I don’t see why Gonzaga would do this.” Next, Murray points to North Dakota State, explaining that “this would add to the MW's football prestige while hurting its basketball strength.” Other candidates include Montana and Montana State (together), UTEP, Sacramento State or UC Davis and New Mexico State, though Murray says of the latter: “Don’t do this, Commish Nevarez.” Ultimately, Murray believes the league will “stay at 10 full-time members plus Hawaii in football because the above options aren't appealing. I don't think the MW adds a full-time member unless it loses multiple full members. Any new member must get three-quarters approval from the MW Board of Directors, so trying to get near consensus on the next move may also be difficult.” (link)

NCAA President Baker joined ESPN’s College World Series broadcast and reiterated his desire for an NIL clearinghouse where everyone knows what deals are actually being signed, agent certification and standard NIL contracts. The Athletic’s Tucker also notes Baker says "everybody is living on mythology" when it comes to NIL right now and the biggest problem is “transparency and the inability to tell what's real when it comes to NIL deals/promises.” (link, link)

Retiring Elon AD Blank reflects on his 17-year tenure leading the Phoenix and explains that with the myriad of changes facing the industry now seems like the right time to hand the reins to someone else. “The new age of ADs, that will be the only way they know it to be. It will be OK, but people like me who have been around it so long, it’s so different. It’s like, ‘I’m not sure I‘m the right person for this.’ Those are comments I’m hearing from colleagues around the country. It’s unsettling, but it’s really because it’s so new to us. … I want what’s best for Elon. I’ll always have a stake in Elon relative to the athletic department and how it’s going to go. These are all my coaches. For a while, I’ll know most of the student-athletes. That will dissipate as we go. Ten years from now, if all the coaches are different, I’m still going to have an [affinity] to Elon athletics.” As for what comes next, Blank remains open to other interests within college athletics, but says: “I’m not wired to work [forever]. I’m not going to die in my briefcase.” More from Blank. (link)

More from Oregon State AD Barnes as Fox Sports football analyst Klatt recently suggested a contraction among Power 5 institutions could be in the offing, as some programs tire of carrying the “dead weight” of others. Barnes insists OSU would not and is not “dead weight,” saying: “Athletics here is only going up. So as I think about our ascension, if I can say that, and our trajectory as an athletic program, I believe we’ve become more viable in being one of those schools, if in fact, that ever happened.” (link)

At the appropriate time, we’ll make an announcement, but he’s in a good place, he and I have had great conversations and so I feel good about where we are.” Pressed to give a timetable, Manuel said only: “When we get anything finalized, y’all will know.” (link)

The Kansas-focused Mass St. Collective is hosting a Ladies Night Out with the KU football program to raise funds for the collective. General admission for the event is $100, and Mass St. COO Beckler tells On3’s Wittry that attendance is expected to be in the hundreds.” Wittry notes it is becoming increasingly common for collectives to prioritize events that give donors access to players and coaches, and Beckler adds: “Hopefully these ladies will learn some stuff and get to know some of these young men and that way when they’re watching them on the field, whether they’re in the stands or at home, they can say, ‘Oh, I know this guy individually. (I) met him,’ and it just helps that relationship standpoint and really peel back the layers of what can be a big-time college football program.” (link, link)

LSU fans broke a record at the College World Series by purchasing 21,435 Jell-O shots at Rocco’s Pizza and Cantina, a local Omaha eatery. The Tigers received an assist by Raising Canes Founder Graves, who purchased 6K of the shots for $30K. Rocco's says LSU now has records for the all-time team total and the Guinness Book of World Record for shots purchased by one person. The next-closest fanbase as of Monday evening was Wake Forest, with 5,572 shots. (link); On3’s Wittry doesn’t finish the sentence, but notes: “If the collective at LSU ever co-brands a beer where some of the proceeds go towards NIL deals…” (link)

Girls are dropping out of sports at “alarming rates” upon hitting puberty, and Nike CEO Donahoe believes the key to reversing that trend is increasing the number of female coaches. According to Aspen Institute’s Project Play, nearly 75% of youth coaches are men, and even when women are offered the opportunity to coach, they worry they won’t be good enough to take on such a position because of, as CNBC’s Balasaygun and Goldberg put it, the “sexist stereotypes society often promotes.” Youth Sport Trust CEO Oliver explains there are physical and psychological barriers that keep girls from participating in sports after reaching puberty, including low body confidence and pressure to conform to identities defined by their peers or adults. Balasaygun and Goldberg note that “female coaches are not just important in terms of giving young girls a positive role model – they also offer a safe space to discuss and process the difficulties that can come with a young woman’s changing body and mind.” Vegas Vipers (XFL) AC Welter, who is believed to have been the first female AC in the NFL, adds: “If you started to feel uncomfortable as a female athlete…it’d be pretty tough to go to a male coach about some of those things.” Consequently, Nike is “trying to train 20,000 female coaches, moms and other former athletes to be coaches to promote youth,” per Donahoe, who adds the company aims to achieve 50% girl participation in the sport-based community programs it supports by 2025. Connect/MB Sports’ Banker sits down with NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Holzman at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the success of this year’s tournament, the conversation about shopping the sport’s championship rights on their own, recent rules changes, the upcoming Basketball Academy in Memphis and more. Holzman says conversations are ongoing concerning a media rights decision and explains: “Through this we have to find the right sweet spots of reach…what platforms are being used, because we continue to grow at such a significant right here, and we want to continue to build that fan base. It’s about relevance so really also the platform and making sure that we're hitting that and then it's also revenue associated with it, so there's a lot of background work being done to position ourselves for the conversations that will happen around those rights agreements.” Holzman also talks about the new postseason event coming to the women’s game in 2024 and says a “lot more information will be provided to our membership in very short order here, which would include the announcement of the name of the event, the marks, what the selection criteria is, the identification of the committee, where the semis and the championship would be played and a lot of other things.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. Washington State AD Chun covers several topics with D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle from the 2023 NACDA Convention, including his ascension to NACDA president for 2024, his time on the Transformation Committee, the Pac-12’s media rights deal and the overall landscape. Regarding the media rights deal, Chun says things continue to progress. “My perception is things have been really steady and calm amongst our presidents. … The presidents are united. You get the sense that this is moving forward, and probably moving forward more rapidly as we get closer to the fictitious start of next football season, which, for every conference, is media day. … Nobody wants this thing to keep lingering on, especially the ADs. We need to start moving forward with planning for the future, but I think just by the behavior of our presidents, you just get the sense, with the calmness, that this thing is hopefully going to see an end pretty soon here.” Chun goes on to acknowledge that “we are in a very, very difficult time in college athletics with very few solutions. Those are harsh realities that at least I came away with from the Transformation Committee.” If a federal solution is not on the table, Chun says: “I am one who has a lot of concerns on where our industry’s headed.” The full Q&A is now live on Connect. Oregon State AD Barnes believes the Pac-12 will distribute the money earned through its next media rights contract evenly among members but says conversations about allocating more College Football Playoff revenue to those who participate in the CFP are occurring. “My feeling on that is I’m good with it. I think that’s a next step and where we sit, we’re in a position, frankly, with our football program. As you think about the percentage split, it’s got to be balanced, but I think there’s traction and I would support going down the path of incentivized distribution of things like CFP.” Barnes also posits that allocating more TV money to specific institutions weakens the conference. “You think about the schools you’re pulling up to be relevant and competitive as much as you’re thinking about the top, whomever that is. What’s important is that you’re giving the resources to those that are trying to move up. … to me, the health of a conference is the depth of a conference.” (link)

On3’s Prisbell assesses the industry’s state of affairs as it stands now, noting that the “NCAA is much better positioned to lobby lawmakers for a federal NIL bill while led by new President Charlie Baker. Former President Mark Emmert was almost universally panned after a difficult tenure. But it remains a steep climb. The NCAA’s pursuit of a congressional lifeline has been hailed as a Hail Mary.” As that’s happening, Johnson v. the NCAA, in which former Villanova football student-athlete Johnson and other plaintiffs are asking that athletes be deemed employees, continues to play out. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Winter says a victory for the plaintiffs would “fundamentally change the collegiate athletics model” and “have broad implications for other pending proceedings and for college athletics as a whole.” It would not, however, automatically lead to the unionization of college athletes, he adds. On the collective front, Prisbell points to the situations at Texas A&M and Arkansas, which are “believed to be the first schools whose booster organization also is directly fundraising for NIL opportunities for student-athletes. … If this initiative is a success, expect other schools to follow suit, as state law allows. But as NIL activities move more in-house, expect Title IX concerns to bubble up if male and female athletes are not receiving comparable benefits.” Lots more in this full reset, including the impact of the IRS’ recent memo, House v. NCAA implications and more. (link)

Business of College Sports’ Riker takes a look at the growing list of NIL academic certificate programs, noting that Troy’s recently announced initiative has two goals: first, to “teach student-athletes about best practices within NIL and foster entrepreneurial spirit, and second, to provide resources to help those student-athletes put what they’ve learned to practice and succeed in the NIL marketplace.” Student-athletes who complete the program will receive one-one-one counseling and be certified as student entrepreneurs. Arkansas State has a similar program, but one key difference is that content is also produced for those who want to help student-athletes maximize opportunities, such as social media managers and compliance officers. Meanwhile, Boise State’s social media creator certificate, which launches in the fall, is also open to student-athletes as well as interested members of the BSU community and focuses on social media engagement and brand strategy.
