Grand Valley State captured its 15th LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup, with West Texas A&M, Colorado School of Mines, UIndy and Wingate rounding out the top five. On a conference level, the LSC and SSC both had a pair of members finish in the top 10. (link) 

NCAA President Baker says a roadmap for a revamped NCAA will probably be done in July, Fox Sports’ Fischer reports from the 2023 NACDA Convention, adding that Baker also takes a “bit of a shot” at former President Emmert, remarking: “A lot of the time where I have these meetings, people say they've never spoken to the NCAA president before. I'm glad I could change that.” Baker also insists he is committed to advancing reform legislation through the NCAA committee structure alongside work with Congress. "As a former politician, I know there are a lot of people out here who believe it's always a mistake to ask politicians for help. … Success is a process, it doesn't happen overnight. The would-be regulators or the plaintiff attorneys don't know that's true or don't want to know it's true." Baker continues: “The main thing I've learned through all of these jobs, is no one is going to come and do it for you. … College sports has some serious issues that we need to address and deal with. And no one is going to do it for us." More from Fox Sports’ Fischer. On the prospect of student-athletes becoming employees, Baker insists: “I haven’t found one yet who wants to be (an employee). This would be a colossal mistake." (link)

Sport Sponsorship:

+ Simon Fraser’s Special Adviser Copeland, tasked with examining its FB future, issued an interim recommendation to not play exhibition games this upcoming season, citing “safety and logistical concerns.” Further, Copeland notes that just 45 student-athletes intend to return to SFU for the fall, with several still undecided on their future, leading to increased safety risks. On the Football Alumni Society’s schedule proposal, Copeland found the significant travel costs and demands on S-As and support staff, plus the impact on academics make the proposal not viable. + Dominican (CA) will elevate its club LAX programs to varsity sports, effective immediately, with the men’s and women’s programs being the second and first DII programs in California. Of note: “Both programs are already working hard to put together a competitive schedule that includes teams from all over the country as they seek a permanent conference. The transition into the NCAA is supported by a large anonymous gift that will support the growth of both programs through scholarship money.” (link)

+ Quincy will add STUNT as its 27th varsity sport, starting in spring 2025. President McGee: “While Quincy University has a distinguished cheerleading tradition, STUNT provides an important new competitive opportunity for these talented student-athletes.” (link) 

+ Edward Waters has received a $6K grant from the USTA and ITA to support the addition of its new WTEN program. (link)

Western Colorado names former Idaho (DI) MBB HC Claus as the Mountaineers’ next HC. AD Van Hee: “Coach Claus is a dynamic leader who brings strong character and integrity and is one who builds incredible relationships with his student-athletes. Michigan Senator McCann (D-Kalamazoo) has introduced legislation that would allow alcohol sales at college athletics venues. McCann remarked to the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee that by doing so, “patrons, we hope, would be less inclined to load up prior to the game knowing that they will have the option to obtain an alcoholic beverage upon entering the facility and through the duration of the game.” The bill has passed out of committee and will be considered by the full Senate.
