The Athletic's Auerbach identifies several potential candidates to succeed College Football Playoff boss Hancock, including outgoing Notre Dame AD Swarbrick, Ohio State AD Smith, former Big 12 Commissioner Bowlsby and USF AD Kelly, who previously served as the CFP’s COO. Auerbach adds: “Perhaps the CFP opts to follow recent hiring trends at the Power 5 commissioner level and go outside of college sports for someone with experience in pro sports or as a media executive. Or someone with more of a traditional events or operations background, since the role is heavy on that.” (link)

LSU AD Woodward tells the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report he hopes NIL doesn’t lead to schools paying student-athletes directly, adding that he believes it’s unlikely. He goes on to say: “NIL is just a piece of what we do. We still have to have facilities, we still have to have great personnel and coaches to support these kids. … All these things add up, and NIL if done right is a very positive thing.” Woodward also talks about his hiring philosophy, explaining he looks for people who are intelligent and have a vision for the department. “I hire people that are proven and who I think have the ability to have good success here at LSU. But that starts off with very smart people. … You know, there’s no accident that [women’s basketball coach] Kim Mulkey was the valedictorian of her class at Hammond High. These aren’t accidents. They’re correlations.” (link)

North Carolina AD Cunningham talks with SBJ’s Nethery about how NIL will impact athletic departments’ business models and points out that the “men’s basketball player, the women’s basketball player, the football player, the gymnast all get the same scholarships. Now, we do have head count equivalencies, but what we have to start wrestling with is, is that the right thing to do? Or do we have to modify the existing scholarship agreements and how we spread those out over our teams because I do think it's critically important that we maintain those opportunities for kids to go to college.” Cunningham laments the loss of regionally focused competition due to realignment, pointing out that regionality was the reason why conferences were created in the first place. “I understand why we’ve lost that, but it is a bit unfortunate.” Looking at things more broadly, Cunningham observes sports and arts continue to receive less funding at the K-12 levels and says: “All of that contributes to a pyramid of participation, and I want to make sure that we keep this pyramid wide so that youth sports, high school sports, college sports all have people in the pyramid so they can play. It shouldn't just be for the most elite, talented person.” (link)

Georgia AD Brooks talks with DawgNation’s Griffith about UGA’s facilities upgrades and points out specifically how the new track will benefit the university. “It all starts with having a facility that can host USATF and AAU meets over the summer as well as our student-athletes. We haven't been able to host true big meets here, SEC championships, bigger NCAA events. … Now we’re talking town-and-gown, we’re talking about hotels, and we’re really helping the city of Athens.” Beyond that, Brooks points out that some of athletes who would visit for AAU and other meets could eventually turn out to be recruits not just for track, but also for football and other sports. “A lot of kids in those age groups go on to play football, basketball, baseball, whatever. They run track at an early age, and I'm a firm believer in if you can get kids to come to your campus at an early age, then it becomes a reality, a place that they may go, ‘Georgia’s real place I want to go there.’ … Think about North Carolina A&T and the growth they’ve had in track the last five, six years. Well, they’ve been hosting a lot of youth meets there at their facility for the last 10 years.” Full interview with Brooks. (link)

Illinois AD Whitman met with media members to recap 2022-23 and look forward to 2023-24. Whitman pointed out the Illini recorded the second-highest revenue total in department history ($135M), will finish FY23 with $35M in new fundraising business and have more than 7,300 active donor accounts. Regarding facilities, Whitman noted the school is taking a more incremental approach after finishing several significant projects in the last couple years; however, he says the Illini will invest $25-30M during the next several years to upgrade the fan experience, including improved WiFi, a new video board, new LED lights and a new distributed sound system. He also believes college sports should chart its own course rather than rely on Congress: “We have to lean into change. We have to be prepared to make challenging decisions. Sometimes we get caught up in what’s easiest which is always maligning what has been. We’re at the moment where leadership is prioritized. It’s at a premium. We need those two guys (NCAA President Baker and Big Ten Commissioner Petitti) and all of us to fully flex our leadership muscles and show we're not afraid of navigating a very complex, evolving environment.” (link, link)

Sportico’s McCann unpacks The Brandr Group’s lawsuit against EA Sports, pointing out that “EA will emphasize it is not in contract with Brandr and therefore not legally bound by the terms and methodologies Brandr negotiates with schools and athletes.” Furthermore, EA could “assert that it did not induce any school or player to break an agreement with Brandr; it instead, EA will say, sought to conduct an individual negotiation. … EA might also suggest that if Brandr believes its contracts with schools and players are in breach, it ought to pursue legal action against breaching parties (i.e., the schools and players). Brandr’s complaint clarifies that a player is not bound by a group licensing agreement when the player individually markets or licenses their NIL, such as when ‘an advertising campaign depict[s] only that individual.’” Brandr cites Michael Jordan’s deal with Nike as an example but maintains EA is not analogous to Nike in this situation because it is signing a group of players from teams. Ultimately, McCann concludes: “The case could set important precedent on how licensing contracts are interpreted when groups are implicated through individual dealmaking.” (link)

U.S. Integrity CEO Holt tells Legal Sports Report that unusual logins sparked the sports betting probe involving Iowa and Iowa State. “If they’re logging in from the field, gymnasium, practice facility or arena at a time when there’s no fans, no vendors, no real security, it’s really easy to catch. And that’s going to spark things to these state regulators, who are going to say, ‘Why are we getting 200 logins from the men’s locker room at Iowa State right now?’ There’s no game going on there in the arena. Maybe we should take a peak and make sure all of these guys are at least 21 because they’re college kids. And also make sure they’re not using other people’s accounts or betting on Iowa State games. And therefore you get people looking at it.” Holt advises college students to avoid using sports betting apps when at practice facilities, locker rooms, stadiums and arenas and to instead use websites like ESPN or Yahoo Sports to check betting odds. Attendees included coaches, doctors, athletic trainers, faculty, athletic administrators and student-athletes. Memphis men's basketball coaches, including Tigers HC Hardaway, committed recruiting violations by participating in two impermissible in-home recruiting visits with a prospect during his junior year of high school, according to a Committee on Infractions panel, which notes: “Because of his personal involvement in the violations and failure to monitor his staff, the men's basketball head coach also violated head coach responsibility rules. … Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse. The head coach's inattentiveness to compliance — particularly at a time when his program was under scrutiny related to a different infractions case — resulted in careless violations. Head coaches must remain diligent in monitoring their staff and promoting compliance at all times and cannot delegate those responsibilities to compliance staff members and administrators." The panel classified the case as Level II-mitigated for Hardaway, and, in addition to the penalties agreed to by the school in December, issued him a three-game suspension from the first three games of the 2023-24 season. North Dakota State AD Larsen says he has not spoken with anyone from the Mountain West about potentially joining the league in the event San Diego State leaves. He tells Inforum’s McFeely: “The Mountain West has probably been one of the most stable conferences in college athletics for a long time, so I don't know if you can speculate what they're going to do. The last time there was major movement, they thought about adding and they eventually decided, 'We're going to stand pat.' I think they liked their geographic makeup, how they're composed. I think they liked where they were, the presidents liked where they were and they decided not to do anything. I could very well see that same approach this go-around.” Regardless of whether the Mountain West or another FBS league inquires about NDSU’s interest, Larsen says he tells President Cook: “We have to be ready to answer, because we can't say 'give us six months to figure this out.' The answer might be no, but we have to be ready to have an answer if a call comes." (link)

Georgia Tech AD Batt joins Fox Sports/Connect’s Fischer from the 2023 NACDA Convention and talks about his transition to the AD role, hiring football and men’s basketball head coaches, taking advantage of the school’s location in Atlanta and much more. Batt explains that President Cabrera’s commitment to athletics was a big reason why he sought out the job. “I think the alignment that we’ve had – our president, our leadership, our board, all the support we’ve gotten over the last seven months – we’ve been able to have our budget increase 20% heading into next year. A lot of that has been around alignment, support, bringing resources to the table…that we haven’t really been able to take advantage of before.” On leveraging Tech’s location in Atlanta, Batt notes: “There’s a reason all the neon signs from Coca-Cola and Google and Accenture and NCR all face Bobby Dodd Stadium. So, providing them the framework to take advantage of that is a huge part of what we’re trying to do as an operation.” The full conversation is now available on Connect. (link)

The Athletic’s Auerbach takes a look at what UNLV is doing to ride the wave of sports momentum in the city, and Rebels AD Harper explains that a “big part of the last 22 years was inconsistency in leadership, and that’s all the way to the top. At times, you’ve had people with one foot in the door and one foot out the door. And if you got one foot in the door and one foot out the door, you might just as well be out the door. Now, we have a president that’s committed to being here. I know that I am committed to being here, and I know that [Football HC Odom] is committed to being here. Our coaches are committed to being at UNLV and not looking at UNLV as a stepping stone.” More. (link)

The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority (RSCVA) has agreed to purchase an indoor track that will sit in the Reno-Sparks Convention Center every year from November-March and on which Nevada is expected to host four to six meets per indoor season. Nevada SportsNet’s Murray adds that the Wolf Pack also is expected to put in bids to host the Mountain West and NCAA Championships, with the track potentially drawing U.S. Championship events. The $5M track is expected to be built in Italy by Mondo, and Wolf Pack Track & Field HC Twiggs calls the addition “transformational,” adding: “You can really go to the top-tier athletes and you say, 'I can provide you with what I call a Power 5 experience because we have this great indoor facility.’ You'll get the opportunities. You'll get to develop into whatever athlete you so choose to be — national class, conference class, whatever that might be — because you'll have that opportunity at Nevada because of this facility.” (link)

Colorado AD George releases a statement concerning an inquiry into the treatment of track & field student-athletes dating back 25 years: “Our goal is to provide a positive, world-class student-athlete experience for every student who chooses CU Boulder, and it is clear in some instances we have fallen short of that goal, especially for some of our female student-athletes as it relates to body composition and culture. For that I apologize. … The inquiry reveals that many current and former cross country student-athletes have had a positive experience at CU and does not reveal that any employee—including the current coaching staff—were found to have violated any university, Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance, or NCAA policies or rules.” George also points out that CU has made several policy changes already as a result of its own internal review “and will now build on those changes by adding more guidelines to our body composition tests that are designed to further protect student-athletes. … The cross country coaches and our nutrition staff understand the allegations and are committed to addressing the overarching concerns that have become evident throughout this inquiry process. The student-athletes, the coaches, and the nutrition staff have my full, unequivocal support.” (link)

Athlete Advantage has released a statement in support of The Brandr Group’s lawsuit against EA Sports that reads, in part: “This lawsuit represents a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice and rightful compensation for these talented athletes, and Athlete Advantage is honored to stand alongside Brandr Group in this crucial fight. … By supporting the Brandr Group and the athletes involved in this lawsuit, Athlete Advantage aims to amplify their voices and advocate for long-overdue reforms in collegiate sports.” The statement continues: “As an agency dedicated to fairness and equal treatment, Athlete Advantage calls upon all stakeholders in the sports industry to support the rights of college athletes. It is time to embrace a more equitable system that empowers athletes, enables them to profit from their NIL, and ensures a sustainable and prosperous future for collegiate sports.” (link)

Parties interested in NIL are keeping a close eye on Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech to see how the schools will respond to the state’s newly amended NIL law, particularly as it relates to bridging the gap between collectives and university fundraising arms. Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective Executive Director Jones tells On3’s Prisbell: “It’s an arms race – it’s real out there. It's a natural evolution to have a tighter bond between the fundraising arms and these collectives. They're essentially talking to the same people. They're all trying to raise money. The less stress on the donor, the more it cuts out confusion with the donor, and the more impactful it is – seamless and convenient." (link)
