Hamline moves quickly and promotes WBB HC/Compliance Director Focke to succeed outgoing AD Verdugo as Asst. VP/AD. HU also elevates Assoc. AD Rittler to Senior Assoc. AD overseeing "financial and programmatic aspects of the Athletic Department." President Miller: "I am confident that Alex's leadership and clear vision will set the direction for the Athletic Department. I have no doubt that, together, Alex and Beth will continue the commitment to excellence and student development that defines the Hamline University student-athletic experience." (link)

NCAA President Baker joins Fox Sports/Connect’s Fischer from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss his continued engagement with federal lawmakers, his first 100 days in the position, structural changes the NCAA needs, the issue of student-athletes as employees and more. Baker says he’s talked to over 1,000 student-athletes, none of whom want to be employees, and when Fischer points out that it might be outside their control, Baker remarks: “But their voice ought to matter a little here, and I think in some respects their voice really isn’t part of the conversation and that’s unfortunate.” Baker cites the recent SAAC letters in which student-athletes indicated they do not want to be employees, “and they had some really good reasons for why they felt that way. I’m sure there are student-athletes who would be okay with that idea. … [But] 90% of student-athletes aren’t living high off the hog, if you want to call it that. They’re investments that the schools make in the educational experience of their students, and I really do believe that people haven’t thought very hard about what the consequences of this idea would be.” One underreported challenge facing college sports, Baker tells Fischer, is the diminishing supply of officials across all levels. To address the issue, the NCAA retained Bain & Company, which found that tens of thousands of officials simply stopped officiating after the pandemic. Bain also found that, rather than pay or travel, most officials leave the industry because of the behavior of coaches and the behavior of parents and fans. (link)

Inside the NCAA:

+ NCAA committees and task forces, including the Concussion Safety Advisory Group and Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, will review new scientific evidence and revised recommendations on concussion diagnosis released by a group of more than 100 expert researchers and clinicians from around the world. The NCAA groups will consider the recommendations and determine whether updates to current member resources, such as the Concussion Safety Protocol Checklist and Concussion Safety Fact Sheets, are warranted. NCAA CMO Hainline served on the panel and says: "The updated consensus statement will become the most widely recognized guidance in the world on the diagnosis, management and prevention of concussion in sport. Its impact will be felt across the globe, including among NCAA member schools and conferences and their student-athletes." The list of recommendations includes updated and age-appropriate tools to aid identification and management of concussions; new versions of strategies for return to active education and sport; and a call for an interdisciplinary working group to guide research into potential long-term effects, among others. + The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) has voiced its support for removing cannabis from the banned drug list and testing protocols. The committee will gather input from the membership this summer, with final action expected in the fall. CSMAS will also work with the Board of Governors to stop testing for cannabis at NCAA championship events while legislative action is considered. (link)

Birmingham-Southern will apply to receive state funding amidst its financial struggles, thanks to the passage of a new state bill today. The new program, aimed at struggling institutions, will create a loan program through 2027 with $30M in initial funding. Institutions who meet the appropriate criteria will also be required to submit a plan for repayment and “will not receive funds if they can’t prove that they have taken steps toward “financial soundness.’” As for BSC, the college has raised around $46M of its $200M endowment goal.
