On3’s Prisbell asks what happens if the NCAA doesn’t receive the help it is seeking from Congress, and North Carolina AD Cunningham replies: “I haven’t heard anybody talking about a Plan B now. Hope we have people working on that. We do need a Plan B and C. And what does it look like: Do we go to a revenue-sharing model for some of our teams? Do we go to need-based models for the majority of our teams? What impact do all of these conversations have on the Olympic movement?” Cunningham goes on to emphasize the need for understanding the long-term impact of revenue-sharing. “Does it mirror the pro model that we see in our country today, where 90% of the participants are male? If we go down that path, it really will have an adverse effect on our Olympic movement. So, what does the funding model look like? The pro model pushes money to the most popular kids in the most popular sports. We seem to be walking down that path. I hope we recognize it before it’s too late.” (link)

Illinois AD Whitman says the transfer portal has “largely been successful,” but believes it could do with some tweaking. “For example, the fact that the portal is open during the NCAA Tournament in basketball right now to me doesn’t make a lot of sense. I think that December for our football coaches almost becomes almost unbearable. You’ve got the portal that opens, you’ve got signing day, you’ve got bowl preparation, you’ve got coaching changes happening, you’ve got the end of the regular season. There are a lot of things coming to a head at the same time and what can we do to try and modify that calendar to provide some more stability and life balance for the people that are working in that space. So there’s a couple things there that I think can be done better, just trying to be more thoughtful in our overall approach and timing relative to the transfer portal will go a long way.” (link)

ESPN/Amazon analyst Herbstreit believes fans are underestimating the impact of realignment, telling Pat McAfee: “I guess what I’m saying is everybody’s bracing for the 12-team playoff, which is cool, and it gets a lot of excitement. But I think what people are underestimating is how much more movement there’s going to be in realignment. I feel like the Big Ten and the SEC, who are the big pillars in this whole thing, I just feel like, I don’t know when it’s gonna happen. But they’re not staying at 16. They’re gonna go to at least 20 and so who’s going where, right? I mean, where’s North Carolina going? Where’s Oregon, where’s Washington going? Where’s Clemson going to end up? … How many teams are going to be in the SEC? You know, how many teams are going to be in the Big Ten? What’s left of the ACC, is the Big 12 taking the Pac-12? Is the Pac-12 now the Mountain West? So I think we’re gonna have so many more answers that I find interesting. It makes us all look to ‘24. So that’s what I mean when I say lame duck. It’s not just that, you know, we’re going to 12 teams for the playoff, it’s a lot more than that. This is still going to be (expletive) great year in college football.” (link)

Tennessee is asking the UT Board of Trustees to increase the budget for renovations to Lindsey Nelson Stadium from $56.8M to $95.8M. An outside consultant hired by Kansas is recommending a 55,000-square-foot conference center, a 175-room upscale hotel and possibly a 2,500-seat concert and event venue for the Memorial Stadium site. Additionally, the consultants are recommending that KU shrink Memorial’s capacity by about 7K to 39,839. KU Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communication and Public Affairs Leeper notes that despite a smaller capacity, fans’ sightlines will improve, they will be closer to the field and their overall experience will be enhanced. “We wanted to create a more intimate feeling in the stadium, make it louder and improve the quality of the fan experience.” Leeper also says it’s important to strike the right balance between having a high-quality football stadium and other amenities that can bring people to the university throughout the year. “We want that football stadium to appropriately reflect KU’s commitment to athletics and KU’s argument for remaining in a Power Five Conference…but financially it doesn’t make sense to make that type of investment in something that is only used seven days per year. Part of this proposal is to identify how to activate that development 365 days per year.” More. (link)

North Texas is in the home stretch for securing a naming rights partner for Apogee Stadium, according to Mean Green AD Mosley, who expects to be able to make an announcement in July. “We are in the closing phase of contracts and negotiations. We are really excited about where we landed. When we can talk more about it and the partner we have coming on board, people will be excited about their connection with UNT and the opportunity to do some remarkable things around the stadium with concerts, games and outside events. It’s a tremendous opportunity for us.” (link)

EA Sports says the lawsuit filed by The Brandr Group will not impact its development timelines and the game remains on track for a 2024 release. EA also addressed reports about how it plans to compensate student-athletes, saying: “There has been speculation around our plans, but it is just that – speculation. To be clear, we have not yet made any offers to any college athletes for this game.” On3’s Nakos adds: “Multiple sources across the group licensing industry have told On3 in recent days The Brandr Group’s decision to sue is just as much about OneTeam. A competitor in the college licensing realm, the two were previously doing business together. OneTeam made an investment for a minority stake in TBG in April 2021.” (link)

Rising Spear Garnet Spirit Inc., one of the two arms of the Florida State-focused Rising Spear collective, reported receiving more than $1.2M in contributions during FY22. COO Cowen tells On3’s Wittry: “That number accurately reflects the funds raised through our nonprofit. However, that does not account for nearly all the transactions through Rising Spear with our Gold Standard, which is on the for-profit side.” Cowen also points out that “we have executed over 1,400 hours of work through the county schools, the Boys & Girls Club, American Red Cross – all of our partner charities,” adding that the collective that has a nonprofit and for-profit arm works with fans, donors and businesses on a case-by-case basis to figure out which entity is best for them. “The easiest money is always the charitable money because people write a check. As soon as you get into the business element and with the marketing and the exchange factors of what considerations and sponsorship, like, anybody will tell you it’s harder to sell sponsorship and marketing than it is to solicit donations.” (link)

The Myrtle Beach Sun News’ Weissman chronicles how a planned $95M gift to Coastal Carolina fell through, “in part, because the donor felt disrespected by certain university officials.” The donor, who reluctantly confirmed his identity to Weissman, was Gregory Gerami, the president and CEO of a hydroponic farming and hemp plastic company in Texas. Gerami tells Weissman his relationship with CCU began because he was dating someone who had been associated with the university, and he had “some tax things” he needed to offset. He also says his interactions with former President DeCenzo were positive, but he felt disrespected by two other CCU officials, describing one interaction as racist. “I just decided enough is enough, and this isn’t working for me. I have no ill feelings toward Coastal. I just think we were doing too much and weren’t dating long enough to be spending that kind of money on dates if that makes any sense.” CCU maintains it terminated its agreement with the donor, citing an unfulfilled early expectation of the arrangement and has no knowledge of the context of Gerami’s claims of racism and disrespect. Walk With TFB Founder/CEO Bryson posits that college athletic departments should embrace the idea of reaching beyond the borders, writing in a guest post for Extra Points that “deliberate engagement with internationalization practices as an athletic department is an opportunity to generate revenue, win championships, expand your global footprint, and adequately support international college athletes.” Bryson goes on to observe that “U.S. professional leagues are not playing these games in non-U.S. countries simply because they like to travel. Entering new international markets allows these leagues to tap into different regions of the world where consumer behaviors and purchasing power generates revenue and increased profit shares for competition that was once localized to the United States. The Big 12 Conference moved first. Other conferences and individual institutions will be soon to follow.” Bryson also cites the upcoming women’s basketball game between South Carolina and Notre Dame will “attract international athletes who desire to compete in the NCAA and fans who want to attend NCAA competitions in the United States.” He concludes: “Whether your institution is in a small market or big market, these global partnerships will yield increased fan engagement when your institution and host city/country commit to establishing a sustainable relationship rooted in inclusive excellence, cultural exchange, and commitment to winning.” (link)
