Eastern Washington introduced freshly minted AD Collins, who will officially start on July 15. In his remarks, Collins said: “I'm the son of an educator. I'm a former coach and a tireless fundraiser. But I'm a collaborator, and what's exciting about today, it's not about me. It's about everyone in this room. What's exciting is what we can all come together to accomplish. We're going to have three areas of focus in our department, three areas of service. One, we're going to serve our student-athletes and their holistic development. Second, we're going to serve our campus, and third, we're going to serve our community." (link)

Pittsburgh AD Lyke tells SBJ’s Nethery she’s not sure how confident she is that a congressional solution for college athletics is forthcoming, but “I think they are starting to listen to the importance of the threat of some things like the California bill on overall college athletics and broad-based sports, the impact it would have on Olympic sports, the impact it would have on women’s sports, a bill like that if it was passed in a given state.” Lyke does not believe a split between academics and athletics is imminent. “You can get compensated and still go to class. There’s value in an education, and I know it's diminished from a perception standpoint, but there's great value in it. … No one’s talking about the kid who has [an NIL deal] and is still going to class. I think that the biggest challenge and opportunity we have with NIL is to create transparency and registration around NIL. It’s all permissible, let's just document it. Unrestricted free agency with no limits is not sustainable.” (link)

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Zeigler joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast to talk about San Diego State’s status with the Mountain West. Zeigler indicates that his initial impression from Commissioner Nevarez was that “everything was very collegial” and that the league would be understanding if the Aztecs opted to leave. “And that was the last time she spoke on the record about this. I think the problem with the letter is once it got leaked out, it got public, and I think she probably – I’m just guessing – felt like I’ve got to get the back of all these other schools that are in my conference…and I’ve got to publicly be tough. So, all of the sudden, she’s taken a very contentious approach, it seems. She stopped talking to the media after being very open saying, ‘Call me anytime, I'll talk about everything, I'm very transparent.’ She won't return any messages or talk, and so I think I think she's probably just getting the back of the other 11. At the end of the day I don't think there'll be any hard feelings.” More. (link)

The Nebraska Board of Regents yesterday officially revised its bylaws to move oversight and big-picture planning for the athletic department to President Carter’s office. Previously, the UNL chancellor oversaw athletics. Regent Clare: "None of us in our lifetimes have seen so much change in intercollegiate athletics. Nebraska needs to stay on the cutting edge in this changing landscape. So I would say athletics is too important for the president not to be engaged." Regent Schafer underscored the importance of athletics to the university’s overall success: “We've gone through a pretty bare and quite honestly — at times — miserable state of athletics at the flagship, fans are getting to the point where they don't have hope. … I think it's pretty important we put our best person forward at the end of the day.” Carter will now serve on the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors, and despite concerns voiced by some faculty members, Carter insists his new duties will not detract from his job of running the NU system. + More on Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Hurley’s new contract from CT Insider’s Aldam, who reports Hurley will earn $4M-5M annually, making him the highest paid coach in school history. Hurley will also earn an annual retention bonus of $500K and can net $100K for winning the Big East regular season title and another $100K for winning the conference tournament. Appearances in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament are each worth $50K, and a Sweet 16 berth will earn Hurley $100K. Appearances in the Elite Eight, Final Four and national title game are all worth $200K, and a championship gives Hurley a $500K payday. If Hurley is let go without cause, UConn has agreed to pay all base salary, supplemental salary, and performance incentives earned but not paid as of the date of termination. Should the contract be terminated between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024, he will be paid 75% of his remaining total compensation in the form of a liquidated damages payment. Same for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons. That figure increases to 100% the following season. If Hurley leaves for another DI job, he would owe $10M, with the total decreasing annually to $7.5M, $3M, $2M and $1M in subsequent years. Leaving for an NBA post would cost Hurley $2.5M with incremental decreases to $500K. (link)

The IARP’s Independent Resolution Panel finds that LSU “failed to monitor representatives of athletics interests in its football program and the activities of individuals recruiting in its men’s basketball program, resulting in the provision of impermissible benefits and recruiting violations.” Additionally, the panel found former Men’s Basketball HC Wade committed multiple violations, including “failing to report potential NCAA violations, providing impermissible cash payments to impede disclosure of information of potential NCAA violations in contradiction to NCAA unethical conduct legislation, and failing to cooperate with the infractions investigation.” Wade also, per the panel, “violated the head coach responsibility rules by failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the men’s basketball program.” LSU has been placed on three years’ probation alongside several self-imposed penalties in football and men’s basketball. Wade has been given a two-year show-cause beginning today and running through June 22, 2025. Specific prohibitions for Wade include a 10-game suspension for this season, he will be prohibited from off-campus recruiting related activities during any applicable April or summer evaluation and/or contact period and more. Now live on Connect: SMU AD Hart sits down with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention to chat about his term as NACDA president, the importance of the student-athlete holistic model, the Mustangs’ $100M football stadium project and the major issues facing the industry. Banker asks Hart his thoughts about football becoming a standalone sport with its own commissioner, and Hart says he’s not an advocate for one particular model at the moment, but “I am an advocate for something that's going to work better than the model we have today, and I think that's where the consensus is and that's where the focus is. So, if that's what we're able to within some modification or variation of the structure we have now, great. If we need to do something differently and approach it differently, that's okay too, but I'm pleased that those conversations are happening, and I really haven't heard many people who want anything other than what I've just described.” Full conversation. We’ve always begged for it, and now it’s here, and it’s happening in the way we hoped it would happen.” (link)

One source close to the program told SwimSwam that the latest violations are not Jorgensen’s first offense. According to the source, he was also suspended for the Wildcats’ SEC opener at Texas A&M last November, but did not inform the team of the reason for his absence. The source also said that the entire Kentucky swimming coaching staff was suspended for one week at the start of May.” AHC Camper has also “apparently resigned,” according to Overend. (link)

LSU Football HC Kelly sounds off on his and other college sports stakeholders’ recent trip to Washington, D.C., saying: “There needed to be some publicity behind it. There needed to be at least an education at the committee level where they had more than just what California is trying to do. … Look, I think, more than anything else, they hear it now – that college sports is in jeopardy. It's not just football. I didn't have to be there. [Alabama Football HC Saban] didn't have to be there. We'll be OK. Yeah. At the end of the day, the big schools, the big oil companies, they all survive. … College athletics is at a crossroads if this doesn't get fixed.” Ultimately, Kelly believes “we’ll know something by August. If there's nothing on the floor or in committee by the end of July, then we'll know that they can't produce something." (link)

Montana Senior Associate AD/SWA Gee and Wofford Deputy AD for External/SWA Rabb sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz at the 2023 NCAA Convention to discuss the value of staying at a single institution throughout their careers. Gee and Rabb also talk about what it’s like working for a long-tenured AD, the evolution of sport supervision duties and how they keep touch points with student-athletes as their administrative responsibilities grow. Gee explains that having the history and knowledge of working at the same institution helps her to take risks “because I knew if I made a mistake I would still be supported and still be recognized as having the knowledge but being a human, especially in rules compliance.” For women who are entering the industry, Rabb advises being a sponge and not going in with tunnel vision. “You can learn a lot just by answering the phone because you're going to find out what media relations does, you’re going to find out what operations does, and that might open a door for you that you didn’t even realize exists.” Lots more in the full discussion. Further interest rate increases are "a pretty good guess" of what the Federal Reserve will do if the economy continues in its current direction, Fed Chair Powell said in remarks on Wednesday to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Powell told members of the House Financial Services Committee he would not characterize the Fed's recent decision to hold interest rates steady as a "pause," and noted the fact that a majority of policymakers see two more quarter-point rate increases as likely by the end of the year. Half of workers aren’t engaged on the job and are putting in minimal effort to get by, according to Gallup research released last week. The data found that employee engagement in the U.S. declined for the second year in a row, and there is a growing share of the workforce that is disengaged or resentful that their needs aren’t being met. In some cases, these workers are disgruntled over low pay and long hours, or they have lost trust in their employers. The Wall Street Journal’s Ellis parses the research further and finds: “Many employees see shifts away from flexible schedules and remote work options as a signal that executives don’t trust them to do their jobs outside of the office. Others say benefits to remote work they experienced during the pandemic, including more time with family and cutting back commutes, are now critical to their happiness. McKinsey & Co. Senior Partner/Chief People Officer George says employers making more in-office work a requirement are motivated in part by trying to bolster workers’ loyalty, which they correlate with longer retention.
