More from NCAA President Baker’s sitdown with Fox Sports/Connect’s Fischer, as Baker explains why he took the job. “The answer is I played basketball at Harvard, my brother was a baseball player at Princeton, my wife was a gymnast at Northwestern, two of our kids played DIII football. I’m a huge fan of what college sports means to young people. And the vast majority of college sports is not on TV on New Year’s Day. In fact, it’s not even on TV at all. In fact, 90% of those 520K athletes will probably never play on TV. But that doesn’t mean the lessons that are learned – the teamwork, the accountability, the getting up when you get knocked down – all those lessons, they’re learning all those same lessons.” On his conversations in Washington, Baker expects to have a better understanding of the likelihood of a federal solution by the fall, stating: “We’re also going to run the traps on putting a lot of those kinds of consumer protections, student protections in place – transparency and accountability measures – through our own NCAA process just in case because I do think, one way or another, we should get to the point where student-athletes and their families know what the market looks like, what can be expected of an agent and what a typical traditional contract looks like.” Baker goes on to note that if a federal solution is not in place this fall, the association will be more aggressive in defending its action. Babson AD Lynch sits down with the college magazine to discuss athletics’ championship culture and more. On the change in culture: “It’s been a slow steady march, but we’ve become relevant nationally in a lot of different sports. Now, there’s this real championship culture that we have where every team wants to be a part of it. Every coach who joins our program now has a sense that that’s the type of program that we are, that we chase championships, and we have student-athletes on podiums at the end of the year.” Asked athletics’ new vision, Lynch states: “The plan really provides our coaches with bookend goals that every one of them can repeat to every student-athlete they talk to. It helps clarify for people what the vision of the department is and what the direction of the department is. So it helps our coaches, it helps student-athletes we’re recruiting, it helps our administrators when everybody’s talking the same language and driving toward the same goals. That’s what separates us.” On the addition of WGOLF this year, Lynch: “Babson is in a financial position unlike a lot of other schools that are dropping sports or adding sports simply to add bodies to their undergraduate population. Babson is in a position of strength right now where we have a whole different set of reasons for adding the program. We actually think we can be good in the sport.” (link) 

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker sits down with NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Holzman at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the success of this year’s tournament, the conversation about shopping the sport’s championship rights on their own, recent rules changes, the upcoming Basketball Academy in Memphis and more. Holzman says conversations are ongoing concerning a media rights decision and explains: “Through this we have to find the right sweet spots of reach…what platforms are being used, because we continue to grow at such a significant right here, and we want to continue to build that fan base. Misericordia continues its sport portfolio expansion, with plans to add Men’s & Women’s Wrestling in 2024-25. AD Edkins: “Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with a first-rate experience, which includes diverse offerings. The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has proposed that when pushing off the pitcher's plate, both feet of pitchers could disengage from the playing surface during their delivery, starting in the 2023-24 academic year. “Under the proposal, the pitcher's pivot foot could become airborne with one push from the pitcher's plate. However, pitchers would not be allowed to replant their pivot foot, resulting in pushing off from a second point and the pitcher being farther away from the pitcher's plate. Committee members think whether the pivot foot stays in contact with the ground or is airborne, there is no advantage gained by the pitcher.” Also up for debate is the obstruction by a defensive player, deemed as such if said player blocks any part of the leading edge of any base or otherwise blocks the runner from advancing or returning to a base. The committee also recommended expanding video review, options regarding the visible action clock and more. The Playing Rules Oversight Panel will discuss via videoconference August 10. (link)

+ The AAUP has released the 2022–23 Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, which presents key findings from the AAUP’s annual Faculty Compensation Survey. Despite increases in average salaries of 4.1% for full-time faculty members from fall 2021 to fall 2022—the greatest one-year increase since 1990–91—real average salaries decreased 2.4% after adjusting for inflation. Real average salaries have declined sharply for three consecutive years, with a cumulative decrease of 7.5% from fall 2019 to fall 2022. Median presidential salaries increased 9.6% in nominal terms, compared with a 7.1% increase in average salaries for full-time faculty members during the same period. The survey analyzed employment data for more than 370K full-time and 90K part-time faculty members as well as senior administrators at more than 500 institutions. (link)
