AAC Commissioner Aresco Q&As with SBJ’s Smith about the league’s 10-year anniversary and says: “We’ve been sort of a victim of our own success because we’ve lost three schools that were the foundation of our league to the Big 12. But when you look at the new schools coming in, again, these are schools that are investing. These are schools that have the same DNA as the incumbents. Plus, we’ve got FAU coming off of a men’s basketball Final Four run. So, I’m optimistic that we’ll continue to do what we’ve been doing.” Aresco also points out the league was able to stay whole with ESPN despite the recent departures. “I think they saw that we have the revenue to bring in new schools as part of an equitable arrangement. I don’t want to go into too many details, but it meant a lot that they cooperated with us and recognized that we were going to be a strong conference.” Aresco, who will be 75 when his contract expires in 2025, says he’s unsure whether this will be his last contract. “As long as I’m healthy and I enjoy it and they want me, I’m going to continue to fight for this conference. There’s always a new challenge; these jobs are more complex than they’ve ever been.” (link)

Houston AD Pezman understands it may take time for the Cougars to find their footing in the Big 12 but asserts: “We’re not going there to collect a check and be the punching bag. We want to compete to win.” Men’s Basketball HC Sampson also acknowledges the competition is about to get more stiff, telling the Houston Chronicle’s Duarte; “This isn’t a neighborhood fight. We’re about ready to go mess with Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay stuff. It’s the big-time, because of investments they’ve made in their facilities and their coaches. … You don’t go from the American and suddenly start winning in the Big 12. There’s too much history. There’s too much winning in all the sports there.” As it relates to football, Pezman says the team “has to mirror’ what the men’s hoops team has done. “Hopefully, once we get to six wins, we’ll stack a couple more on top of that. To think we’re going to go win 10 or 12 games next year is ambitious. We all want to. It doesn’t mean we’re not trying. We’re realistic about it also. There are some really good teams in this league.” (link)

Duke AD King tells SBJ’s Nethery that financial difficulties represent the challenge she thinks about the most, noting the Blue Devils are always searching for creative revenue solutions, but there is a ceiling. “We can only sell so many tickets, Cameron’s pretty small, we’re trying to pack our football stadium, but the expense side of the ledger is just getting out of control. So, how do we contain costs, grow revenue and provide an amazing experience? King also says several bubbles are on the verge of bursting, including the cost of higher ed. At Duke, all in, with scholarship tuition, fees, everything is approaching $90K. I wonder for the generations of middle schoolers, high schoolers coming to college at some point when is that bubble going to burst? Salaries – you know we're continuing to pay, as we should to be fair in the marketplace, but when is that bubble going to burst? The cost of doing business continues to escalate exponentially so you know we can pick from any number of bubbles and just kind of wonder at what point does this train stop?” Full interview. (link)

More from Illinois AD Whitman during last week’s media roundtable as he discusses possible upgrades for Illinois Stadium, says the department is working on “some pretty dramatic things over the next few several years, but we’ve got to get a couple funding things finalized. When I say dramatic, it wouldn’t be a scrape restart. It would be how can we take what we have and make it better? But you could still do some pretty dramatic improvements with that approach.” Whitman on new NCAA President Baker and Big Ten Commissioner Petitti: “We’re at the moment where leadership is prioritized. It’s at a premium. We need those two guys and all of us to fully flex our leadership muscles and show we're not afraid of navigating a very complex, evolving environment. … If we don’t, someone will write it for us and I don't know if we’ll love the way that it reads.” (link, link)

Prosecutors in New Mexico have dismissed all but two charges against former New Mexico AD Krebs, who remains charged with two counts of embezzlement for allegedly using university and Lobo Club funds to help pay for a trip to Scotland that included himself and family members, several prospective donors, and former UNM Men’s Basketball HC Neal. Krebs’ trial on those charges is set to begin on July 17. (link)

The America East has completed its summer meetings, during which NCAA President Baker provided an update on several national topics. The conference is also set to undertake an initiative to strengthen its brand positioning and establish a new visual identity. The rebrand work, which is being done in partnership with Legend Labs, is expected to be unveiled in 2024. Commissioner Walker: “The singular focus of our membership to best position America East to achieve its high ceiling has never been greater. These meetings not only provided the platform for important conversations, but also allowed us to celebrate a great year and our exciting future. Our brand enhancement initiative will properly align the conference and membership’s values and visual identity with who we are.” (link)

Nebraska President Carter talks about steps NU will take re-enter the AAU after being removed in 2011, saying he will set metrics to measure the university’s progress against the AAU’s newly revised membership criteria, including federally funded research. One strategy Carter plans to implement is launching a process to report University of Nebraska–Lincoln and University of Nebraska Medical Center research, along with the systemwide institutes, as a single unified figure “There’s a reason every other institution in the Big Ten except one, and three-quarters of public AAU institutions, are aligned with a medical school: The combined impact of a flagship university and an academic health science center can’t be matched. Stronger alignment between our two institutions with a statewide reach and mission will benefit both, and will make our entire university and state more competitive.” (link)

East Tennessee State is discontinuing men’s indoor track & field, effective immediately. Bucs AD Sander: “This was not a decision we made lightly, but we have to make tough decisions sometimes to ensure we are providing the best possible experiences for our student athletes as a whole and preserving the standard of excellence of our athletics programs.” In informing students, ETSU cited financial and Title IX concerns as the rationale. Tennessee Deputy AD of Championship Resources Lebrón sits down with Illinois Assoc. AD for Illini Way Student-Athlete Development Reyes at the 2023 NACDA Convention for a conversation about authentic leadership as an ethnic minority. Lebrón reflects on her upbringing in a Puerto Rican family and explains the ways she’s ingrained her cultural heritage into the fabric of her identity within athletics, crediting her family with instilling confidence in her throughout her career journey. Lebrón explains she’s proud of her heritage but doesn’t think about it and act differently. “I’m going to carry myself with class and integrity and respect for others, but I hope that I’m just naturally setting an example for females, for minorities but especially latinos and latinas like us.” (link)

Delaware State received $14.9M of its $16.2M (92.2%) athletic budget for FY22 directly from the university, according to the Delaware News Journal’s Tresolini, who notes: “Only one HBCU institution is even close to DSU when it comes to the percentage of the athletic budget being drawn directly from school funds. That’s SWAC member Alabama A&M at 90.3%. The only other HBCU schools that collect more than 80% of their athletic funding directly from the school are Morgan State (82.5%), Maryland-Eastern Shore (81.3%) and Tennessee State (81.2%).” Hornets AD Shields-Gadsen credits DSU President Allen with “recognizing the overall importance that athletics can play in the university setting. … When you think about it, that’s the university adopting athletics just as it would an academic program, to say that’s a priority area, and they recognize how critical athletics can be to the overall success of a university.” (link)

Extra Points’ Brown examines what direct foreign investments into college sports might actually look like, noting first that it’s a misnomer that sovereign investment funds are only interested in sportswashing. By and large, they are looking to make money on these ventures, and Brown observes that deriving a profit in college athletics is more difficult than it is in professional sports. “Could some oil sheik or displaced Russian oligarch bankroll some NIL collective? I mean, I guess…but it’s hard to see why they would, when it would be easier and more profitable to just buy an Italian soccer club or a minority stake in the Orlando Magic or something.” That said, there are avenues for foreign investment in the industry, and Brown cites the Pac-12’s scrapped equity rights transaction as one of them. While the price tag and difficulty of extracting profit remain obstacles, Brown notes: “But, theoretically, is anything stopping a future league from spinning up their broadcast rights, MMR rights, licensing rights, and other assets into some new LLC, and then seeking outside investment in that LLC? Other than potential local political opposition, not really. And if one of those outside investors happened to be a major investment bank or PE firm, who then decided to unload their stake to a pass-through LLC tied to a sovereign wealth fund…it isn’t hard to imagine a world where the PIF owns 20% of future Big 12 TV rights.” More from Brown.
