Notre Dame AD Swarbrick responds to reports from the past week concerning the future of the Fighting Irish’s TV rights & revenues: “I read once a week what our TV revenue is. It’s never accurate. And that’s OK. I don’t want to correct it. [...] We have an opportunity to have a discussion now because of [NBC’s] acquisition of Big Ten rights, but the contract is not ending. We may wind up with a new agreement during this period of time. But we may not.” Swarbrick also shoots down the notion that incoming AD Bevacqua’s NBC ties mean the network has an inside track on a deal extension: “It’s the opposite, actually. Appropriately, Pete was a strong advocate inside NBC. He sees the value of this relationship. He’s passionate about Notre Dame. It’s great to have somebody in NBC who felt that way about Notre Dame. NBC values this property a lot. But we’ve lost that. So it’s not as easy as saying, ‘Gee, now that Pete is here we’ll get this deal done.’ It’s not that way.” As for what factors are important in a new deal, Swarbrick points to financial considerations, every game being broadcast nationally & “promotional commitment.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger notes that “As part of the finalization of its TV deal, the Big 12 expects to play weekday football games including Friday nights.” To which FOX Sports’ Fischer responds: “Big 12 has gone from an existential crisis over LHN broadcasting Friday night HSFB games to no LHN and playing on Friday night in just a dozen years.” (link)

The San Jose Mercury News’ Wilner tells JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “There’s almost no chance, despite what's been reported, that ESPN will not have Pac-12 football in the next contract cycle. I just think that's not reality. ESPN needs that Saturday night window. They’re going to also want access to some big games during the day, so I'm going to say ESPN and Apple, I'm going to say within 10% of the Big 12, and then the interesting pieces also to me are what is the kickoff selection policy? … How many night games are there going to be? How many Thursday and Friday games are there going to be? What is the impact of the contract going to be on the campus environment on Saturdays because I think that's a big deal to the presidents and their stakeholders.” On expansion, Canzano believes it’s more likely the league stays at 10 than expands to 14 because the presidents will say they “want to hold on to the integrity of the original Pac-10 and see what happens with UCLA in a few years, but I actually think they need the extra schools. If it were up to me, I’d go to 14, if it were up to them, I’d probably err on the side of 10.” (link)

CollegeAD has new contract terms for San Diego State AD Wicker, which now runs through June of 2028 at overall base comp of $475K ($325K + $150K supplemental) & annual incentives that could total up to $125K. There’s also $75K per year in deferred monies and - notably given yesterday’s news - if the Aztecs enter a new conference, Wicker has the option to reopen negotiations concerning his compensation. Further, if he exits for another opportunity, Wicker would owe the remaining years times base comp. If the school makes a move it’s years times base comp plus earned deferred cash. (link)

Georgia Southern AD Benko recaps his third year in Statesboro, says the Eagles should be able to use the new Anthony P. Tippins Family Training Facility by the end of July with football camp starting in August. The foundation continues to be laid for the new Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center with a timeline of beginning to play in the new venue in the 2024-25 season. Additionally: “We are currently fundraising for a renovation of a team space at (Baseball’s) J.I. Clements Stadium. This project is slated to cost $8-10 million, and we are off to a great fundraising start, thanks to Eagle Nation. The programming for this project is very progressive and incorporates several new team and fan areas that are sure to be game-changers.” Benko says he’s asked his staff to R.A.D. this summer (recharge, assess, development): “Athletics is a lifestyle. I love it. I chose it and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. But our jobs have non-traditional hours. And so one thing we talked to our staff a lot about is ensuring they're not burning the candle at both ends. So for the summer, it really was putting that charge—pardon the pun—into recharging.” More. (link)

Grand Canyon launched a campus-wide rebrand of its logo system yesterday. The new “Speed GCU” logo was unveiled in February and the entire logo system was built out and refined around it, “developed with an aim to give the university a modern and cohesive brand that is unique to GCU.” Per the release: GCU's "Running Lope" logo … continues to be a foundational element of GCU's brand. The Running Lope now has a cohesive GCU logo with familiar speed lines and agile movement that matches the university's innovative, modern and fast-moving identity. A custom "Thunder" font was also developed that ties the brand together with "Lopes" and "Grand Canyon" wordmarks, which will start appearing in branded items such as GCU's athletic uniforms. The "Arched GCU" logo that was unveiled prior to the 2015-16 academic year will be retired. (link)

FIU and one individual have reached an agreement with the NCAA enforcement staff regarding recruiting violations in the softball and women's soccer programs that occurred during the 2020-21 COVID recruiting dead period and involved impermissible contacts and impermissible recruiting inducements. The Committee on Infractions panel has approved the agreement, thus allowing the school and individual to begin serving their penalties immediately. Penalties include two years of probation, a $5K fine, 10% reduction in official paid visits for both programs during the upcoming academic year, and a one-year show-cause order for the individual. + Ohio State AD Smith indicates the Buckeyes have shifted to a renovation of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center as opposed to an expansion: “We were talking about a new building that would attach. We’re kind of shifting away from that a little bit. They (HOK) challenged us on our programming and things of that nature. Which was really good. Now we’re starting to study a little bit of a different way of looking at the Woody. Originally, we were going to empty out the Woody, but we’re not going to do that.” Smith declines to disclose how fundraising is going for the project. (link)

The Athletic’s Williams chronicles the rise of acrobatics & tumbling as an emerging NCAA sport, noting that it was born out of competitive cheerleading and gymnastics and “is also the only varsity collegiate program other than football that was founded at the college level, as opposed to developing from the youth or professional ranks.” National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) Executive Director Cook: “Because it was created at the collegiate level, we could shape it through every lens. Through an athletic director’s perspective, a coach’s perspective, a fan’s perspective, and also bringing in the positive elements of other sports and how they’ve evolved, all while making something new.” Williams points out that “motivation for the growth varied. At the Division I level, most schools added A&T to help fulfill Title IX scholarship requirements. Division II and III schools used it as an enrollment enticement.” And it’s beginning to increase in popularity at the grassroots level, as, for the first time this past spring, USA Gymnastics worked with the NCATA to put on an A&T youth invitational. Arkansas Baseball HC Van Horn sounds off on the impact of NIL in the sport, explaining that “just from watching games the last few weeks, you see where the portal can really springboard you ahead of some people if guys come in and they stay healthy, and they don’t get hurt. I think last summer, some schools maybe were more advanced in what they could offer, and they did offer. They got help from around the area and the state, and they got some pretty good guys, guys that we were on, honestly. This year, maybe it’s a little more level, but it’s honestly out of control. I don’t know where this goes from here. … I’ve watched some mid-majors Division I programs get absolutely torched. This summer already, I’ve seen coaches quit, retire that weren’t going to, but they don’t have any players left. I don’t know where it’s going to go. We want to be in the game, so we’re in the game. We’re getting after it. If you really take a step back and look at everything as a whole, I think it’s a mess.” (link)

Cincinnati Men’s Basketball HC Miller comments on the lack of work-life balance for coaches, telling The Field of 68: “I'd like to get married, have children. But I don’t even know how I can cultivate that right now. … We’re supposed to be leading young men. But right now all they’re seeing is absentee fathers with the way the calendar is.” He adds: “I have assistants with wives, with young children, and I feel bad for them. I don't know how they can be the kind of husbands they have to be and the kind of fathers they have to be given the landscape that we’re in right now. Something has to change.” (link)

Ohio State and Dayton have agreed to play a men’s hoops exhibition game in October to benefit the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation and the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio. Flyers AD Sullivan: “We can’t think of a better way to support Coach Grant and his family than helping to put together this event to reduce the stigma around mental health and suicide prevention. We are looking forward to sharing resources with the community and hopefully helping many other families.” Buckeyes HC Holtmann adds: “Anthony’s willingness to share his family’s story in hopes of helping others is inspirational and we appreciate him including Ohio State in this event. We are excited that the proceeds will benefit the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation and other local organizations.” Grant’s daughter, Jay, passed away at the age of 20 in 2022. (link)

ESPN’s Thamel with the latest from the San Diego State-Mountain West saga: “San Diego State is expected to deliver a notice to the Mountain West today that it will not withdraw from the league, as the school previously stated it intended to do. At today’s Pac-12 board meeting, the league “presented presidents with an update on what’s termed ‘accelerated’ progress on a TV deal,” per Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger, who notes “Only a general framework was revealed, w/ significant linear concepts. A more substantive framework expected by FB media day (July 21).” (link)

The Mercury News’ Wilner submits that for its long-term survival, the Pac-12 should be thinking in terms of bargaining chips to ensure it’s well-positioned for its next round of media rights negotiations. “Chips take the form of media markets (membership) and football brands (competitive success). The Hotline believes adding SMU this summer would give the conference a chip, the massive Dallas-Fort Worth market, for future negotiations. (That’s doubly true if the Mustangs are successful in elevating their program.) We also believe adopting a revenue model that rewards teams for reaching the College Football Playoff would help the Pac-12’s top programs (Washington, Oregon and Utah) solidify their presence on the national stage and enhance their brand value. There are other ways to promote competitive success — for example, smart scheduling — but those stand out: Do whatever is required to support your top programs and capture the DFW market by inviting SMU. If the Mustangs are thriving at the end of the decade, the conference could explore two other schools in the region: Rice, which brings the Houston market, and Tulane, which is located in New Orleans.” (link)

West Virginia AD Baker reflects on WVU’s recent challenges, telling 247Sports’ Casazza: “Listen, if you're going to cash those checks, you can't lament the job and what comes with it … I've had days that were difficult days, but those come with a job like this. If you want to be in a lead position, you've got to be prepared for this." Other ADs and administrators have called or sent messages to Baker, assuring him he did the best he could with a difficult situation in a terrible time on the calendar, and Baker plans to reach back out to them to talk through what’s happened. "I think I was aware there were going to be challenges from the start. I probably hadn't thought through all the details and all the challenges, but I was aware." (link)

Yale AD Chun joins SBJ’s Nethery to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities associated with Ivy League athletics in the age of NIL. Chun believes Ivy student-athletes are taking advantage of NIL in the way that it was envisioned. “They’ve all started their own companies – I’ve bought so many of whatever they are selling – and really learning while they’re getting an education, while they’re competing, and really starting a business side, a leadership side. And many are doing that through philanthropic endeavors, and really I think philosophically that’s what NIL is really used for because how awful it is to start your own company but you can’t say you’re a student-athlete.” Chun says she is unaware of any collectives that have started within the Ivy League. “I think there’s a big belief amongst the alumni that if they're going to put money toward something, it would go toward the program and let the prospective student-athletes decide based on the merits of the institution and its athletic program.” Full interview. Extra Points’ Brown reports the proposal to increase the FCS-to-FBS entry fee from $5K to $5M “came from wanting to peg application fees to something resembling NCAA units. The fee to reclassify from DII to DI is roughly that of one NCAA unit, and the goal, I was told, was to tie this entrance fee to roughly two NCAA units.” While that proposal generated the most headlines, Brown notes other DI Council proposals actually matter more, per ADs and other sources. This is especially true of the proposal that would require schools to fund “90% of the total number of allowable scholarships over a two-year rolling period across at least 16 sports, including football. Schools also would be required to offer at least 210 scholarships each year, amounting to no less than $6M.” Brown: “Most schools do not fully fund the maximum allowable scholarships for every single ‘equivalency’ sport, like swimming, soccer or softball. A few potential FBS candidate schools also don’t currently sponsor 16 sports, like McNeese State (14) or Montana State (15). Other schools may sponsor 16-18 sports, but not do not clear the 90% mark or the $6M mark. I’m still trying to dig through all the data, but I suspect at least a few current FBS programs are also not in compliance with the scholarship rules.” More from Brown. (link)

U.S. Integrity Founder/CEO Holt tells Gaming Today that “we average 15 to 18 alerts per month. Of those, approximately half turn into suspensions, bans, or arrests related to sports betting activity. One of the misnomers with those numbers is that it’s just American sports. Unfortunately, for us, that includes some international events where the regulated U.S. sportsbooks are taking action on them. We have to send alerts out because the books have them up. … Tennis and eSports are by far the two that we see the most alerts in.” Holt also sheds some light on one way the system works, noting that in February 2022 he noticed a big line move that suggested heavy syndicate betting on a men’s basketball game between Missouri and Mississippi State. He then received a call from a source who confirmed it. “One of the bigger professional bettors — sometimes these bettors reach out, and I’m sure it’s after they bet it — reached out and said you should watch out for Missouri and Mississippi State because Missouri has travel issues.” Holt consequently contacted an SEC source, who reached out to Tigers AD Reed-Francois and confirmed Holt’s info. “He called me back one minute later and said, ‘As always, your information is 100% accurate, but boy the Missouri AD would like to know how you know because the pilot just announced it six minutes ago.” (link)

ESPN laid off several notable on-air employees, including longtime anchor Kolber, NBA analysts Van Gundy and Rose, NFL analysts Johnson and Young, In total, the cuts are expected to include around 20 “on-camera and potentially high-profile jobs as the sports giant downsizes for the streaming era,” per the Washington Post’s Strauss. Per an internal ESPN memo: “It’s important for you to know that these are difficult decisions, involving individuals who have had tremendous impact on our company. They are based more on overall efficiency than merit, and we believe they will help us meet our financial targets and ensure future growth. Out of respect to all involved, we don’t plan on releasing a complete list of names.” (link, link); Front Office Sports’ McCarthy and Perez report Max Kellerman, Todd McShay, Matt Hasselbeck, and LaPhonso Ellis were also among those let go. They add: “Following ESPN’s layoffs of Ellis, Van Gundy and Rose, the next shoe to drop is the NFL coverage team.” One source indicates: “Some big legacy names are going to be moving on. Their NFL coverage is going to look different next year.” (link)

The Morgan State head softball coach committed NCAA violations by conducting impermissible tryouts with four prospective student-athletes at institutional and off-campus facilities, according to an agreement released by the Committee on Infractions, which notes a total of five impermissible tryouts occurred with four prospects over the course of approximately one year and several softball student-athletes were also involved in the impermissible tryouts. Due to his personal involvement in the violations, the HC also violated HC responsibility rules. Prescribed penalties include two years of probation, a one-year show-cause for the HC, a suspension from the first five games (10% of the regular season) for the head coach during the first season of the show-cause period, and a maximum of 10 combined official and unofficial visits for the softball program during the 2023-24 academic year, among others. Mississippi State has released its season ticket pricing plan for Humphrey Coliseum, and 247Sports’ Murray reports the “three west sections of court-level seating and one central section behind those are worth a $1,200 Bulldog Club donation to go with the $325 season ticket. Two sections flanking the central section are a bit less at $1,325 total. … The ring of lowest-level seats behind the south goal is $825 per seat. These sections link the premium areas to one side, and the new courtside student seating to the other. Behind the students is a central (east) section at $825, paired with three sections at $725 on the east side and two more on the west. Rounding-out the lower bowl are five south end zone sections at $525, the nearest non-student seats that the ticket costs more than the donation. The upper bowl has matching groups of sections at $325 east and west, and $225 in the south end.” (link)
