Incoming Eastern Washington AD Collins joins AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz to discuss his journey to Cheney, the process of going through a public AD search, earning trust with a new staff and establishing accessibility with student-athletes. Collins talks about the role self-interest plays in the competitive world of college athletics, where “playing to win” has to be balanced with being a team player within a department. Collins on how he will lean on his background in fundraising to help build relationships on campus: “You’ve got to find your early wins, and I think when it comes to the community, I really look forward to being out on their terms. And that's where I think we have to utilize our coaching leadership too because they have folks who are really important with their programs, but then … we also want to use our university advancement leadership because ultimately, in athletics, we’re here to serve the institution. So, we have to make sure we're collaborating with our development leadership across campus because now that may unlock even bigger wins.” Full interview. (link)

Illinois AD Whitman talks about the importance of embracing the changing college sports landscape as an opportunity rather than a challenge: “Twenty years from now they’re not going to still be shaping the future, they’re going to be living it. … It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment for all of us. But for this seat in particular, it provides a really inspiring chance to contribute something to the broader good.” Whitman also believes the “NCAA’s best hope for sustainability is to find ways to create more homogeneous groups. Can you slice the pie in such a way that you’re creating smaller subsections that create like-minded, alike institutions that can be governed somehow within the broader umbrella of the organization? Again, hard to do. But I think in general in a very simple statement, I think that’s the key to their long-term viability.” Lots more from Whitman. (link)

Hawaii AD Angelos says seating expansion at Ching Athletic Complex from 9,300 to 15,300 will be completed by August 1. As work on the venue continues, Angelos is seeking to add premium seats. There are 15 luxury booths, each accommodating 20-25 people. But three booths are reserved for the visiting team, UH leaders and sponsors. UH plans to sell field-level seats behind the end zone as well as develop a “suite level” area. Angelos: “Everyone values access. Even if it’s not a great seat, if they’re down low on the court or on the field, seeing people come and go, they like that. We’re seeing how we can monetize the stadium, and maximize it when it comes to revenue.” In order to improve the fan experience, Angelos is exploring the possibility of allowing fans to tailgate at the off-site parking areas. “I think in-game experience will be huge for us here. Because we have a small crowd, we’re going to have a really good in-game experience.” (link)

Florida AD Stricklin discusses several topics, including the future configuration of SEC football scheduling, the status of The Swamp renovation plans, the outlook for Florida/Georgia in Jacksonville, how the Gators have adjusted their NIL approach, the growing impact of the transfer portal and more. Stricklin: “We need to move pretty quickly to figure out what we’re going to do ‘25 and beyond. I do think nine is the best way to go, that’d be my preference. There’s a lot to be determined, though,” including College Football Playoff criteria. So far, there are no concrete plans for the Jacksonville Jaguars to upgrade their stadium, so Stricklin notes any discussion about how those plans will impact the upcoming years are “conjecture.” He does believe there are two reasons why playing the Bulldogs in Jacksonville makes sense: the tradition and the financial windfall for both universities.” No timeline on upgrades to The Swap, but Stricklin says “we’re closer to having more specifics than we were last time we spoke.” (link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Rice is now available with Illinois State up next. Maine AD Killy: “It really helped me consolidate some research. I don’t know how many hours, or days, of research it saved me from finding information to the right links, but it was hours at a minimum and probably a day or two in total.” (link)

The Arkansas board of Trustees has approved athletic department salaries for 2023-24, including Razorbacks’ AD Yurachek’s $1.75M. Football HC Pittman is set to earn $6.6M, Men’s Basketball HC Musselman will earn $5M, Women’s Basketball HC Neighbors will pocket $1.115M, Deputy AD of Integrity and Student-Athlete Success Trump will bring home $262,950, AVC/Deputy AD for Student-Athlete Wellness/SWA Ratcliffe Dawkins will earn $265,490, and Baseball HC Van Horn will bring in $1.789M. Full list. (link)

McNeese AD Schroyer says the DI Council’s proposal to increase the entrance fee from FCS to FBS from $5K to $5M “will not stop us from moving up if that is the right thing to do. … “Everything we do is to put us in a position to be regionally dominant and nationally relevant. That is what we have been working so hard for.” (link)

Miami (FL) raised more than $26M during FY23, a 36% YoY increase. The Canes also saw a total of 8K more donors contribute over last year. (link)

The WAC has informed UTRGV that in order to host the 2024 swimming & diving championships at the Pharr Natatorium, it must improve air quality conditions to a healthy level. Following this year’s meet in February, student-athletes, coaches and staff complained about skin irritation, difficulties breathing and burning eyes. Vaqueros AD Conque: “Anytime you do something for the first time, you learn a great deal about how to continue to improve the experience. One thing we learned was that the air quality at the facility fell short. When we became aware of issues with the air quality, we quickly worked with staff at the natatorium, identified areas for improvement, and devised a plan to improve the air quality when hosting major events in the facility. We are confident that these measures will substantially improve the issues we faced while co-hosting the facility’s first major meet.” (link)

Former Texas A&M AD Hyman, who took over in College Station the day before the Aggies became full members of the SEC, recalls his message to fans at the time: “I tried to tell them it’s a different world than the Big 12. It’s going to be unbelievably challenging all the way across the board. In the SEC every football game is a 12-round heavyweight boxing match. You better wear your big boy pants because it’s going to be a hell of a challenge.” Hyman, who came to TAMU from South Carolina, believes Oklahoma AD Castiglione and Texas AD Del Conte will find the SEC is “compatible,” explaining: “That was a lot of (former SEC commissioner) Mike Slive’s leadership. Mike developed it to where we wanted to do what was right for the SEC. That was always the undercurrent. I don’t know that other leagues have that to that extent. On the field of competition we wanted to knock your head off. But once the game was over with we would try to be supportive of one another. I think that’s a characteristic of the SEC.” (link)

On3’s Wittry takes a look at how the USC-focused House of Victory collective has formed two separate entities: a “nonprofit mutual benefit corporation (House of Victory Inc.) and a nonprofit public benefit corporation (House of Victory Foundation Inc.).” Wittry notes that “in the wake of the IRS memo released earlier in June, House of Victory’s organizational model, where it utilizes the tax-exempt status of a preexisting public charity, could be a potential structure for collectives to consider in the future given the potential pitfalls of nonprofit collectives that have applied for 501(c)(3) status.” Executive Director Harris tells Wittry the “number one thing that we wanted to do with this structure was be adaptable because we don’t know what the future is going to look like. We want to be compliant, but we want to have a process in place to show that we’re not looking for any benefit besides trying to help our student-athletes facilitate NIL opportunities and get people behind it. … There’s just more layers of work behind it but being able to have that and say that we’re a nonprofit and no one is in this for any entrepreneurial reasons was a really key aspect for us.” More from Wittry. Everett Sports Management Co-Founders Everett and Hoffman sit down with On3’s Nakos to discuss the future of NIL. Everett believes brands are only starting to spend substantial dollars in NIL, telling Nakos: “So for us, every single month, as we represent some of the most high-profile athletes across collegiate sports, it’s become more lucrative. It’s become busier.” Hoffman talks about Park Avenue, a marketing subsidiary at South Carolina which facilitated 120 partnerships in its first 90 days, according to SBJ. The NCAA ruled the service impermissible, so Nakos explains ESM pivoted and secured outside funding to continue serving Gamecock student-athletes. Hoffman, however, asserts ESM plans to bring Park Avenue to other schools. “From an expansion standpoint, expansion is happening. On the tail of that statement is what’s very powerful about a Park Avenue is the exclusivity of it. The intent is not to place a Park Avenue in every school across the country.” Full Q&A. (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates President Turner talks with Connect’s Garcia Cichosz to highlight the growth of CSA, how a search firm provides value to clients, and Connect’s momentum as the platform now has 5,000 fully completed profiles and partnerships with 35 NCAA institutions. Turner also offers advice for aspiring candidates who wish to partner with CSA, noting that informal meetings are fine and can even be important, but “that’s not really telling us what you’re like as a professional. You're great in that 30-minute meeting or hour-long breakfast, but what we care most about is what you are like on a day-to-day basis? How do you treat your colleagues? How do you interact with university leadership? How do you work across campus? Those things matter because when you get the AD job, you're not hiring the person at the NACDA Convention. You’re hiring the person 24/7/365.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. (link)

Iowa State AD Pollard touches on conference realignment, gambling topics. On the former: “If it’s just the 12 of us, life is gonna be just fine and we are well positioned to have great success. [With the] new television deal, college football expansion coming with the playoff, the ability to have our teams play into that. We have the best basketball conference in the country and it only just got stronger with the addition of those four schools.” On the latter: “It’s safe to say what’s happening at Iowa and Iowa State is happening around the country. Unfortunately, in our particular situation, it’s like speeding. We can all say people speed, but the day that the police officer is sitting on your street and has the radar gun on you, that’s not an excuse… It does feel that our society is way ahead of where the rules are on this subject. It reminds me a little bit of how marijuana was viewed five years ago and how it's viewed today in terms of penalties and punishments. Quite frankly, we might end up being the test case for the NCAA that will change what the punishments will be in the future.” More. (link, link)

UCLA AD Jarmond, who has hit his three-year mark leading the Bruins, weighs in on a handful of items. On NIL: “We’re doing the most we can, but you’ve got to be flexible and nimble in this environment. The hard part of it all is you hear so much, but you can’t trust everything you hear. So, you can’t be too reactionary. But at the same time, you have to be aggressive in allowing for opportunities for your student-athletes to succeed and excel in an ideal space.” On the past year’s competitive results: “We had our best competitive year since 2017. When you have football and basketball, obviously as far as from a revenue perspective they do well, the energy is strong and momentum is there. It’s exciting because I think everybody can tell UCLA athletics is on a great trajectory right now. It’s going to even get better as we transition into the Big Ten.” (link)

Aggie athletes made $4.17M in the first year of legalized NIL compensation, according to a separate open records request filed with the university that contained a date range from June 1, 2021 to Aug. 1, 2023.” Male student-athletes generated $8.4 with women generating $134,661. Campbell unveils new branding. Per the release: “The new visual identity includes new logos and word marks, a simplified color palette, and official typography fonts, an evolution of Campbell University Athletics, reflecting the strength and resiliency of the Fighting Camel, while honoring both the past and present. … The Camel's classic collegiate racing bib is adorned with a new customized ‘C’, featuring the unmistakable hump of the dromedary Camel, and unifying the primary athletics mark with other visual identity assets. The ‘C’ and the Camel are integrated with a new custom ‘Campbell’ primary word mark, sharing the same hump characteristics.” Campbell last updated its primary athletics look in 2008. (link)

Iowa AD Barta’s August 1 retirement is right around the corner. The 59-year-old outgoing Hawkeyes leader has some thoughts on his future: “I don’t have anything lined up at this point. I care so much about college athletics and the change that’s happening there and certainly care about the Big Ten and obviously care deeply about Iowa. Finding some role where I can try to help in whatever way I can. To take my 38 years and try to help out — whether it’s name, image and likeness and transfer portal or it’s the Big Ten brand-new commissioner.” Barta does not want “24 hours a day, seven days a week” and wants to keep his “home base” in Iowa City. Sticking with Iowa, the school has raised prices for women’s basketball season tickets for the upcoming campaign. For those renewing season tickets, the prices will be $175 for adults and $140 for faculty, staff and seniors. Youth tickets will be $60. New season tickets will cost $195 for adults, $160 for seniors and faculty/staff and $75 for youth. Season ticket prices for women’s basketball were previously $125 for adults, $90 for seniors and $30 for youth for new and renewing ticket holders. The Hawkeyes paused accepting WBB ticket deposits in early April after “unprecedented demand” of 6,700, which were in addition to the 6,500 existing ticket holders. Men’s basketball ticket prices will remain the same. (link)

It’s Personnel…
+ West Virginia Senior Assoc. AD/Executive Director of the Mountaineer Athletic Club Gray exited the department back in May. WVU AD Baker finally has the bandwidth to circle back on the search for Gray’s successor: “Generally, I'm not somebody who's like, 'Hey, we have to have somebody who's one of us and has been here,' but I do think somebody who can be a quick study of WVU and West Virginia culture is really important, just because we've had so much turnover in the MAC. A lot of relationship equity has been lost there just with the turnover that's come and a lot of people having to learn on the fly.” (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker and NCAA Assoc. Director of Leadership Development Pottinger sit down at the NACDA 2023 Convention to discuss the NCAA Postgraduate Internship, how the national office is leaning into the student-athlete holistic model and the importance of incorporating student-athlete feedback. Pottinger also talks about how the national office is helping student-athletes find opportunities for life after sports. “Yeah I think it goes back to the postgraduate internship program. While it's only 30 individuals, we do prioritize making that a space for former student-athletes, so that's one piece. But on a larger scale we do our Career in Sports Forum every year for about 200+ student-athletes, and that is a way for them to gain professional development, career development skills for life at the sport. So, juniors, seniors and graduate students can now kind of discover what they want to do in sports, but also you know learn more about the strengths, the values, get really high level tips on a resume and interviewing skills as well.” Lots more in the full conversation on Connect. “In my will, I am leaving Auburn $5 million. I’m going to change it to be just for scholarships for Black students. That’s just my way of trying to make sure Auburn stays diverse. I’ve actually changed it to be used for kids from poor homes. But after that ruling yesterday, my phone was blowing up. I was talking to my friends and said, ‘I need to make sure Black folks always have a place at Auburn. So, I’m gonna change my will and make it exclusive for Black students—all $5 million.’ It’s just for me the right thing to do. I always want to make sure that Auburn’s diverse.” That’s former Auburn men’s basketball student-athlete/NBA hall of famer Barkley after the Supreme Court’s ruling this past week on criteria for college admissions. Attorneys for Electronic Arts (EA) filed an opposition memo in a California federal court this week, arguing the Brandr Group’s lawsuit against the video game publisher, specifically the injunction to prevent EA from paying college football players to appear in a future college video game “fumbles the law,” per Sportico’s McCann. Among other things, EA argues that college athletes are “free” to license their NIL to EA without “running afoul of NCAA rules,” that Brandr cannot prove tortious interference and cannot establish that it “faces an immediate threat suitable for an injunction.” More.
