The CSAC and United East have announced an intent to merge next fall "provided all conditions set by both conferences are met." Notable: "The merger is intended to address the evolving landscape of higher education by stabilizing conference membership and solidifying the sport sponsorship currently offered by the existing conferences. This merger will also provide member institutions an opportunity to decrease the number of associate memberships necessary to support the current sport offerings on each respective campus. ... The Implementation Task Force will be led by Stephanie Dutton, current United East Commissioner, and will be composed of both current commissioners and two athletic directors from each conference. Upon completion of the merge, all current conference employees will remain employed by the combined entity. The leadership structure of the new conference will be established and announced prior to the start of business operations as a new entity." (link); More insights from D3Sports' Coleman and McHugh: "Hoopsville and D3sports.com have learned that the two conferences, which total 17 schools, will be announcing that they are merging, and may play in north and south divisions as the number of sports warrants. ... The conference would be large, but the coming demographic fall-off of college-age students which will start in 2026 has higher education, and by extension, small college athletics, looking to firm up their enrollment, which is why a number of schools have recently announced that they are adding football. Elsewhere, moves like this will ensure that, even though 17 schools is more than is needed for an automatic bid, conferences will still have bids available not just in basketball, but sports such as men's volleyball, field hockey, men's lacrosse and others." AL.com reports on a letter from state lawmakers that indicates “Birmingham-Southern has been operating in financial distress for over a decade. Without support, it will not be able to continue to operate after May 2023.” In order to cover projected deficits through FY26, BSC President Coleman is seeking $30M in state funding, $5M from the city of Birmingham and $2.5M from Jefferson County. Coleman has reportedly raised $45M in private funding toward a goal of $200M. The public funding “would enable the fundraising to continue for three more years so that BSC can replace its endowment and continue to operate as an independent college.” (link)

The Athletic’s Auerbach joins Connect/D1.ticker’s Fischer to discuss the appointment of new NCAA President Baker. Auerbach, who alongside SBJ broke the news: “I think they expected more of a response when they told me the name, but some people had gotten in my ear recently about politicians connected to Massachusetts and had pointed out that Baker was not running for reelection, so it was definitely a surprise, but it wasn’t totally out of the blue like some of these past hires, like the Big 12, Big Ten or Pac-12 hires. [...] But what I have been told about the finalists pool and others involved, this was not an outlier hire. [...] It really points to what the NCAA believes it needs right now to ensure its future looks somewhat like its past or at least the important tent pole items continue to exist.” On what feedback Auerbach has heard from industry sources: “A lot of people think it’s a good hire. There’s a lot of optimism around it. [...] The idea of having someone with a bipartisan background, even though dealing with this Congress is going to be a different thing, but I think people like the idea of someone who is going to be able to build bridges.” Lots more background on the search & what it means for membership. Former Auburn/Ole Miss/Texas Tech/Cincinnati FB HC and current U.S. Senator Tuberville (R-AL) tells Sportico he does not foresee a federal bill passing the next Congress that would include an antitrust exemption for the NCAA. He explains: “We’ve got to take care of all these recruiting possibilities first, and once we get through this we would like to stay out of it. If you get (Congress) involved, it is not a rule, it is a law. We don’t want to jump in this with all four feet and say this is how it is going to be with every situation.” Tuberville, who says he plans to introduce his bill with U.S. Senator Manchin (D-WV) sometime in the spring of 2023, also tells Sportico he believes incoming NCAA President Baker is walking into an “impossible job” and adds: “The problem the NCAA had is they were so vulnerable with lawsuits and couldn’t afford it. It was money going out the door, again and again. We can help to some point, but we don’t want to go overboard on antitrust and all those things.” (link)

North Central (IL) FB captures its second title in four years, capping an unbeaten season with a 28-21 win in the Stagg Bowl. HC Spender: “It's unbelievable. I'm so proud of my staff and players. The most-recent quarterly filing for Daktronics reflects limited liquidity, about which CEO Kurtenbach notes: “In our 54-year history, we have not been faced with the perfect storm that the last two years represent.” Inflation, supply chain issues and the company’s “lack of varied and flexible financing sources” are factors, as are Daktronics’ investment in expanding its manufacturing capabilities at factories in South Dakota and Minnesota, plus increasing back stock of inventory have slashed liquidity from $61.6M during the past year-plus, to $7.7M at present. Kurtenbach adds: “The current situation is more of a bump in the road for us, and not a dire, company-ending situation. Why we’re in the situation we’re in is the demand for what we do is going through the roof. It’s hard to service all of the demand that’s out there.”  (link)
