More from West Virginia AD Baker on his resolve amid a turbulent couple of months, as he asserts: “We’ve had a lot of turmoil these first few months, but I also understand it’s not because of anything wrong with WVU. This is a great job, great fan passion, and we have resources, we have a great institution, we command the presence of the state and I’m excited in the new Big 12 about where we’re positioned and our ability to compete. I love the people here, I love the culture here, and I’m very thankful and grateful to have the job and to be here. … Now, am I ready for some smoother waters to sail in? Of course. I’d love to see that. And I’m confident that we’ll have those.” Baker also says he’s excited about the future of the Big 12, particularly the opportunity to create a “great rivalry” with Cincinnati. “It won’t happen overnight. And then UCF, we have a lot of alums and donors in Florida. So that’s going to give us a chance to connect with them, another eastern-based team. I’m excited about the future of the Big 12.” (link)

The UCF football team traveled 2,877 miles for away games last year, including a trip to New Orleans for the AAC Championship game, per the Orlando Sentinel’s Beede, who notes this year the Knights will travel 6,343 miles. Beede: “On average, the UCF football team will travel nearly 700 more miles than last season in the AAC. This travel not only takes more time but it hurts the wallet, too.” Knights AD Mohajir says not only will the Knights be traveling more in every sport, they’ll be traveling differently. “More people [Big 12 schools] charter in other sports and Olympic sports than we do now. Part of that is to get people back to class. If we don’t do it, things can be used against us in recruiting, so we have to travel differently. … If you travel differently, it costs a lot more money. But we will navigate through all that and we can’t do everything in one year.” (link)

As Georgia continues work on phase one of a two-part, $68.5M enhancement to the south end of Sanford Stadium, AD Brooks notes: “We’re widening that South 100 concourse, and if you think about it, that South 100 concourse is where our most loyal, long-time serving fans have been sitting for 30 or 40 years. and they had one of the worst game-day experiences due to that narrow concourse. I think this project over two phases will address a lot of issues.” Phase two of the project will get underway next summer and will feature new premium seating where the press box is currently located, with a new press box being built in the corner of the stadium. It’s Personnel…
+ CollegeAD indicates the Pacific AD search is down to three candidates with on-campus visits starting today. No names dropped on the three finalists. (link)
+ CollegeAD also says Mississippi State Deputy AD for Compliance Brett has retired after nearly 22 years with the Bulldogs. (link)

+ Awful Announcing’s Koo reacts to the impact departures at ESPN will have on College GameDay: “Hate to speak out on a specific move given it’s a mix of conjecture and personal preference but got to throw a flag here. GameDay is a beloved signature property and you let Rinaldi and Gene walk along with Pollack and Fallica right as FOX, CBS, and NBC ramp up CFB coverage?” (link)

The Athletic’s Sampson reports Notre Dame “absolutely” has concerns about Ohio State fans filling Notre Dame Stadium when the two meet on September 23. “I would describe the approach to a takeover being one more of a damage limitation than solving the problem outright. The inability for Ohio State fans to buy tickets directly from Notre Dame or even ticket brokers to really get them could be an important step. Tickets for Ohio State were never made available to the general public, which was a priority.” Fighting Irish AD Swarbrick: “Part of it is the one-off (schedule agreement), part of it is the color as silly as that sounds. It is what it is. But I’m hoping that the steps we are taking and the enthusiasm around this team will hold it down. But believe me, we talk about it constantly. We strategize, we talk to our ticket partners about strategies we might use. It’s not about accepting it.” (link)

Incoming Mount St. Mary’s AD Davis joins SBJ’s Nethery to discuss his transition from DII Mercyhurst and share his thoughts on the NIL landscape. Regarding the former, Davis notes there are similarities: “Two small private institutions that are very enrollment-driven, so the enrollment game is a big part of what happens in Division II everywhere, but it's a big part of what happens at the Mount as well. … Athletics is a footprint of everything you do at that level, so that gain will continue. You want to try to optimize tuition revenue through rosters and maybe try to add some new programs along the way that are going to be really popular across college athletics.” College athletics “is a business,” Davis continues, adding: “At an enrollment-driven institution, it’s as much about how you’re managing your roster size and your recruiting and your tuition revenue, and the success on the court or the field is just as important, but you’re measuring that success in different ways and that's part of the deal going forward so our coaches have to understand what their role is and it's way more than winning and losing we all want to win and that's going to be really important but there's other ways to identify success at the same time.” Full interview. The Oklahoman’s Tramel suggests instituting a transfer portal window of sorts for coaches similar to that which was recently proposed for student-athletes by the DI Council. Tramel: “Most of the perceived problems in college sports were launched by coaches and their happy feet. The portal and its immediate eligibility? Name, image and likeness excess? A calendar that causes chaos as rosters are mangled and patched together on the fly? All either pantomimed or duplicated from the actions of coaches. … How about this: Schools can fire a coach anytime they wish. But schools can’t hire coaches, at least those under contract elsewhere, until after the New Year’s Day bowls.” Tramel goes on to posit that “the drastic change is needed because coaches can’t be trusted. Jumping ship before a season reaches its shore is dishonorable, and dishonor must be addressed. … The declared chaos of the portal and NIL is chaos pioneered by skittish coaches. Let’s make them stay put a little longer than they’d like.” (link)

SBJ’s Carter surveyed 3,000 consumers among three different fan profiles and asked how many college football players they could name from teams in last year’s final AP Top 25. From a survey of 1,000+ self-described college football fans, the average fan could name 4.3 college football players. From a survey of 1,000+ college students, the average college student could name 1.4 college football players. From a survey of 1,000+ self-described gamers, the average gamer could name 0.9 college football players. Action Network’s Rovell reacts: “The College Football Players Association said it would arrange a boycott to the upcoming EA Sports College Football game after compensation was, on average, only $500 a player. If you believe in this survey from Bill Carter, the # is probably right.” (link)

TCU next week will host a suicide prevention workshop open to all faculty, staff and students. The event will feature a presentation given by The Defensive Line, a nonprofit created by former Stanford football student-athlete Thomas, now of the New York Jets. There will also be a special session for student-athletes, and Horned Frogs Licensed Professional Counselor/Mental Performance Consultant Johnson notes: “Student-athletes experience additional demands that many students don’t, from training their bodies and minds almost year-round to pursue peak performance to at times having to cope for weeks to months with time out of their sport due to their sport injury to dealing with the reactions of fans, coaches and teammates to their sport performance. … Their mental health concerns can sometimes go unnoticed or not be addressed due to their success and popularity as well as inaccurate beliefs that they shouldn't have mental health struggles.” (link)

The next iteration of the iPhone is expected to include a USB-C connector, marking the end of the Lightning port’s 11-year run, the Wall Street Journal’s Stern reports, adding: “USB-C is already used to charge Android phones, MacBooks, Windows laptops, iPads, really any modern electronics. ‘Do you have an iPhone charger?’ will become ‘Do you have a charger?’ Yes, that means you should also stop buying Lightning accessories—microphones, earbuds, etc.” (link)

CollegeAD reports new George Mason AD Lewis’ five-year deal will pay him $400K annually. Lewis is eligible to earn up to $30K in athletic achievement bonuses and $25K for a cumulative APR of 985 or better. Lewis will earn a $5K bonus for a GSR of 90 or better. Additionally, Lewis was given a one-time $100K signing bonus which he would have to repay if he leaves the role within the first 12 months. He is eligible for retention bonuses of $25K on July 1 of 2026 and 2027 and would be owed 50% of his remaining salary if he is let go without cause. He would also owe GMU 50% of his remaining base pay if he terminates the contract early. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake unpacks some of the back-and-forth between San Diego State and the Mountain West, reporting that while no Pac-12 invitation has been extended, “there have been substantive talks, per sources. The Aztecs must have believed they were about to be invited and were trying to extend the June 30 exit deadline to buy some additional time.” Canzano also explains that “I continue to be told that the presidents and chancellors like the numbers they’ve seen and feel good about where this is headed. One member of the CEO Group told me ‘the pressure is off.’ I found that interesting. Given the July 4 holiday week and fact that some of the Pac-12 CEO Group members are out of town, I think it’s unlikely that we see the announcement of a signed deal this week.” Meanwhile, Canzano observes that “SMU is doing some serious rubber-necking on the SDSU fiasco. The Mustangs are motivated to get into the Pac-12 and view the Aztecs as a likely dance partner. For that reason, donors at SMU viewed San Diego State’s announcement that it was staying put as a disappointing development. But as they say in Texas, ‘Don’t hang your wash on someone else’s line.’” (link)

BYU AD Holmoe understands there will be pressure to compete in football quickly in the Big 12, but believes it’ll take time. “I don’t know how many people here really, how much time they are going to give us. So we don’t give ourselves some type of false number of years that it is going to take. That would be crazy.” LaVell Edwards Stadium “needs some work,” but Holmoe says he won’t start renovating just to keep up with other programs. “It’s just not our style. It’s not the manner in which to go about our business.” Regarding the Cougars’ budget, Holmoe says he doesn’t have a magic number in mind, adding that “I don’t think the number is important. We have targets and projections. … But we do not have a number that we’re looking to shoot for. It costs money to compete with these dogs.” Lots more from Holmoe. (link, link)

Texas A&M AD Bjork leads a video tour of $205M in facilities upgrades currently in progress, including a new indoor track & field competition facility, which features a Mondo track currently being installed workers from Italy; the Coolidge Football Performance Center, which is the largest indoor practice facility in the country; the Adam C. Sinn ‘00 Academic & Wellness Center; renovations to the renamed Bright-Slocum Center (including a new locker room, offensive and defensive walkthrough rooms, a recruiting room, among other changes); and the addition of luxury suites to the south end of Kyle Field. Have a look. (link)

Illinois AD Whitman reflects on Men’s Golf HC Small’s leadership and success, pointing out that Small has made a career on figuring out what he needs and going out to get it. “He realized that weather was problem and he went out and raised the money for an indoor golf facility. He realized they weren't performing at the right level, and he went out and got an outdoor golf facility." Whitman also lauds Small’s commitment to building a culture: ‘He's become very aware of who he is and who he's not, and who he wants to coach and who he does not. I think this is important for all of our coaches. He goes out and finds the players who want to play for someone like him. He's looking for guys who welcome playing in adverse conditions. … He coaches their head more than he coaches their body. As everyone knows who plays golf, when you walk out on the golf course it's a very isolated experience. After you bogey three in a row, how do you get your head back in the right place? That's what Mike teaches." (link)

Penn State Football HC Franklin notes that alignment with Nittany Lions AD Kraft and President Bendapudi has positioned the program for success more than at any other point during his tenure: “If there’s something we need and it’s important and it’s going to impact winning, I can make a call to Pat Kraft and it can go up the chain of command and we can get things done and we can get things done quickly. One of the reasons we are having a great recruiting class, two of our top recruits met with Dr. Bendapudi. She killed it, they committed that weekend. That alignment matters.” He adds: “When you’re able to have the budget to retain your staff in terms of a returning offensive coordinator — a veteran, proven, established offensive coordinator. Same thing on defense with Manny. Same thing with special teams. There’s no turnover. We’ve had some assistant turnover but not much.” NIL is the one area where Franklin feels PSU is lagging: “I think we’re headed in the right direction but also being willing to talk about it publicly. Hopefully, a bunch of Penn Staters understand the importance of it.” (link)

Alabama A&M Football HC Maynor voices his displeasure with the transfer portal, telling Urban Sports Scene: “No, I’m not a fan of it because it has basically turned all lower-levels in to JUCOs, to where we develop players, as soon as they develop, they get NIL deals and go somewhere else. We’re just glorified JUCOs right now.” Maynor believes players should only be able to transfer freely if their coach leaves, which is what he did, as HBCU Gameday’s Gaither points out. “After leading Winston-Salem State to the CIAA title as a quarterback in 1987, he followed his coach Bill Hayes to Nearby North Carolina A&T where he won a MEAC title in 1991.” Gaither also notes Maynor’s 46-5 stretch as WSSU’s HC was powered in large part by transfers from DI. The Athletic’s Auerbach and Miller profile Dartmouth Football HC Teevens as he recovers from spinal cord injuries and a left leg amputation after being struck by a Ford F150. Teevens has been a trailblazer in several ways – such as eliminating live tackling from practices and providing opportunities for several female coaches – and Big Green AD Harrity notes: “I love that he just says, ‘This is the right thing to do, and we’re gonna do it. He exemplifies what college athletics can be at its best…and people will tell you that he’s one of the best educators that this campus has ever seen. His classroom just happens to be the football field.” NFL Commissioner Goodell counts Teevens among his friends and made a point to mention him during the NFL Draft: “He has been a leader in making our game safer through breakthrough innovations. He is a pioneer in hiring female coaches, two of whom are currently coaching in the NFL.” As far as his potential return to the sidelines, Oregon Senior Assoc. AD of HDC Administration and Operations Hawkins says: “I’ll tell you right now, Buddy Teevens is gonna come back from this. And he’ll be able to compete again. You watch. You can’t hold Buddy Teevens back.” Lots more. (link)

Baylor Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Strategy Officer Goll joins ESPN 1660 to talk about some of the unsung heroes whose work over the years put BYU, UCF, Houston and Cincinnati in position to join the Big 12. Goll credits former UCF President Hitt for building the university’s enrollment from ~20K to over 65K during his tenure. Similarly, Goll points out Houston President Khator has been in the role for 15 years and observes: “Usually, when you see a brand elevate like the ones coming into the league, you usually have somebody, whether it’s a president, whether it’s an athletic director or a coach, who has a long-term, stable tenure. I think about the athletic director at BYU has been there since 2005. BYU has had four football coaches in the last 50 years. Talk about stability. Two basketball coaches in the last 20 years. … Look at Cincinnati. Their run of hiring football coaches (D’Antoni, Kelly, Jones and Fickell all went on to lead Power 5 programs). Their least successful coach of the past few decades is now a sitting United States senator.” More from Goll. (link)

Sic ‘Em 365’s Bradshaw contextualizes some numbers as reported by Fox Sports’ Fischer regarding the percentage of football games on streaming, broadcast and cable for the first three weeks of the season. Bradshaw submits the Big 12’s 39% figure for streaming during those weeks will not hold, as “the Big 12 (and SEC) are really front-loaded on their streaming games. The weakest non-conference matchups tend to fit there and they usually are September-heavy. The two leagues had 71% of their streaming games before October. Only 5 games in 2022 were ESPN+ games for the Big 12 after September.” Furthermore, Bradshaw posits that streaming isn’t the only suboptimal vehicle for maximizing visibility. “Other leagues benefit from low-distribution cable networks or from regional syndication which isn’t always ideal either. … The ACC has a small syndication deal that gets tossed in alongside 3-4 streaming games while the under-15M subscriber Pac-12 Network hurts the Pac-12 here. For context, ESPN+ has around 25M subscribers. … These deals can be complicated to track and while the Big Ten and SEC are running away with the best visibility it’s clear that there’s still an opportunity for the Big 12 and ACC to get significant exposure with their current contracts. The Pac-12 needs to work out a deal with some of the established players to get the kind of exposure the rest of the P5 is going to get. There is also a giant gap between any of the P5 and what we’ll see the G5 get.” (link)
