Big 12 Commissioner Yormark to the Orlando Sentinel’s Murschel: “I look back on my first 11 months and it’s probably been the most enjoyable 11 months I’ve ever had professionally — on multiple levels. … It’s a very exciting industry with so much possibility and opportunity yet we have challenges, but so does every industry. [...] There’s strength in numbers, but we’re not chasing a number. It’s not like I wake up and say I want to be at 14 or 12 or 16 or whatever the number might be. It’s really about whether we have the right cultural fit. Do we have the right makeup? Is everyone aligned regarding the mission and vision of where we’re going? But at the same time, if there are ways to complement and create value I’m open to it. Whether that means we add two or more — who knows — but I’ve never really been chasing a number and I’ve never really looked at it from a number perspective. I want us to be the best version of ourselves. I’m not chasing the Big Ten or the SEC or any conference. I just want us to be the best version of ourselves.” Yormark also says he’d like to “explore” the unbundling of hoops media rights from football’s in the next deal cycle and later in the conversation doubles down on establishing a bowl game in Monterey, Mexico. As for NIL: “There needs to be great alignment because that’s where we have fallen short. There have been many different voices, but there hasn’t been as much alignment.” (link)

Oregon AD Mullens disputes rumblings that UO and the Ducks-focused Division Street collective are lagging behind others, telling The Athletic’s O’Neil and Hamilton: “There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and a lot of the people supplying the chatter are the same ones with ulterior motives. If our new NCAA president Charlie Baker gets the transparency he wants, we’ll learn pretty quickly what’s legit and what’s not. I know that we, at Oregon, are built with a foundation to sustain us for the long term.” (link)

U.S. Surgeon General Murthy joined last week’s NCAA Mental Health Advisory Group meeting, where he stressed the importance of student-athlete mental health and highlighted the significance of treatment, prevention and stigma reduction. Murthy told the group that the “youth mental health crisis in America is the defining health issue of our time. If we're going to get through this, it's going to require the engagement and leadership of young people across the country. The stigma is starting to change now because young people are pushing others to think about mental health differently. Talking openly about mental health makes a big difference." Murthy also explained that providing early care is vital. “One thing we've dramatically underused as a country is the power of peer support. It can provide immense support to people before they're in full-blown crisis. It's critical when we think about how we can get people help when symptoms are still mild. … It's critical we recognize the powerful impact of isolation and loneliness on young people and examine the role and contribution of technology. We found that heavy social media use can make us feel worse about our self-esteem and friendships and can negatively impact sleep.” (link)

ESPN/SEC Network host Finebaum joins the Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast as a guest host to chat about several topics, including what it was like inside the company during last week’s layoffs, what to expect from the Pac-12’s media deal, some hurdles facing the ACC and more. Finebaum posits the SEC would likely be interested in some or all of North Carolina, Virginia, Miami (FL) and Clemson in the event of expansion: “Florida State’s been bold about it. The president of Florida State has spoken about it. Clemson, others as well, who probably if they could get out without a severe penalty would be gone. And there would be suitors. It would be between North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson, Florida State, maybe Miami. The SEC and the Big 10 would probably be interested parties for a lot of reasons, but they can't get out.” Finebaum acknowledges he does worry about whether his name will come up during rounds of layoffs, saying he’s not one of the “sacred cows,” so “you are concerned” and “when you see names like the ones that went down on Friday, who wouldn’t be worried?” Pivoting to the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations, Ourand reports a deal with Apple, despite rumblings to the contrary, is not necessarily close, and he offers some “informed speculation” that an announcement could come around Labor Day. On the question of creating an environment where mental wellness is a priority, Temple Senior Assoc. AD for Mental Health Coakley visits with @1QLeadership to discuss the setup for the Owls. Coakley explains that “assessing mental wellness ahead of time is important so we can intervene before the need to intervene exists. … We have to be able to give coaches and administrators some confidence in discerning if a student-athlete is displaying a clinical problem, an acute situation, or are they just having a bad day." Coakley also notes that particular attention is needed for those who are moving on from college athletics to begin their non-sports careers: "Sport career transition research says it takes at least 12 months for a person leaving sports to feel okay about not participating anymore. The stronger the athletic identity, the longer the career, and the higher the accolades, it can take four to five years. … When athletes are able to access and develop other parts of their identity, they are happier and perform better." Population Trends = Recruiting Trends? The South – specifically, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida saw notable increases in their share of the national Gross Domestic Product between 2012 and 2022, according to Axios’ Allen, who notes every state west of the Dakotas save Wyoming and New Mexico also experienced gains. Utah and New Mexico increased their shares by over 20%. Conversely, most of the Midwest and all of the Northeast experienced decreases in their shares, and Allen reports a “flood of transplants helped steer about $100B in new income to the Southeast in 2020 and 2021 alone, while the Northeast bled out about $60B,” according to IRS data. Big 12 Commissioner Yormark talks about several ideas for guiding the conference forward, telling the Dallas Morning News’ Mejia-Hilario it was important to establish an in-house commercial sales division. “We’re in the sales business. We have brands already connected to us that do our championships. We just need to see how we can further monetize those championships.” Yormark says the conference has lacked initiative when it comes to growing in Dallas. “This market is one of the country’s greatest sports and entertainment markets, and yet, a lot of people don’t know we’re here. My job as we think about brand and business is to double down on this market to create a narrative that we’re here and we’re open for business. … There’s so many possibilities and opportunities, but, candidly, we haven’t done much outreach before. That’s going to change. You’ll read about more events that we’re going to bring here because this is at the core of our geographic footprint in many cases. There are 24 Fortune 500 companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that we’re not talking to right now. But we need to be engaged with them. We need to see where the connective tissue is between us and other companies. We want to see if the consumers we reach make sense for them to participate.” More from Yormark. (link)

UAB AD Ingram joins Connect/MB Sports’ Banker to discuss the Blazers’ momentum, the process that led to hiring Football HC Dilfer, what elected officials need to know about the industry and the elimination and reinstatement of sports at multiple stops. Regarding the Dilfer hire, Ingram explains he thought the idea was “crazy” when it was first brought to him, but upon further reflection, he realized Dilfer’s 10+ years in the NFL, his 11+ years at ESPN, his involvement with the QB Academy and his recruiting connections all made sense. Ingram notes a 10-minute phone call turned into a 90-minute conversation, and an hour long meeting became a three-hour sit down. “Our search committee was jaw-dropped by the guy.” Ingram also points out there is a misconception among the media and in the public that “everyone is staying at the Ritz-Carlton and eating steaks every night. … Lawmakers make laws for the greater good…but here (with college sports student-athlete rights bills) they are trying to carve out rules for the 1%. The vast majority aren’t making that money. It’s the opposite of what we do for our country. We create laws to benefit as many people as we can. Ingram mentions that his SAAC asked him: “How do we stop this (NIL being passed)?” More from Ingram. (link)

Connecticut Speaker of the House Ritter weighs in on whether Connecticut should, if invited, join the Big 12: “At the end of the day, one thing we don’t want to have happen is move to a conference where basketball suffers. And at the same time, we don’t want to be left out of realignment and wake up one day where we’re in a bad spot because we didn’t make the move. I think at some point, there’s going to be another move for UConn. I think it’s inevitable, whether it’s the ACC or the Big 12. The question is, is now the right time?” Huskies AD Benedict, meanwhile, remarked last week that it’s been a decade since the last realignment shuffle when UConn was left out of the mix, and “I think in some ways, the longer we get away from that period of time and the more things change within the landscape of college athletics and the budgets continue to grow, it’s hard to think that 10 years from now we’d still be having this conversation in the same way because I’m not so sure college athletics and conferences are going to look the same as they do today or will even next year. The timing is what it is. We’ve earned the right to be in the conversation. … As opportunities potentially present themselves, if they present themselves, we’ve got to do our fiduciary responsibility and evaluate every opportunity and make a decision – just like we did with the Big East opportunity.” (link)

Arizona State will join the NCHC as its ninth hockey member beginning with the 2024-25 season. Penn State AD Kraft indicates a new basketball arena is not in the Nittany Lions’ immediate future, explaining: “It’s not a shouldn’t, or can’t. I think it’s evaluating the urgent needs and where we need to be. And then getting a real understanding from coaches of what they need and how we move forward for each program. Like everyone’s different, right? So a lot of our projects right now touch every single athlete.” Kraft notes, however, that incremental improvements to the Bryce Jordan Center can and will need to continue. “I do think it’s moved up the list to figure out, OK, what do we need to do? But I also don’t think it’s go and build new. Is there a way to work within the structure that we have at the BJC to give us what we need? You’ve got to do a lot of studies — it goes back to financing and raising the money. It’s a topic that I was just discussing yesterday. So there’s a lot of other things that we’re working on that we have down the road. We’re not finished when we’re done with these [current projects]. These are just the initial, I believe, urgent needs that we have to attack right now.” (link)

Clemson is exploring the possibility of hosting concerts and other events at Memorial Stadium, which is close to wrapping up $70M in renovations. Tigers AD Neff: “We’re looking to activate Memorial Stadium beyond just seven Saturdays and the spring game. So other entertainment, concert opportunities. We hear a lot about that. And I know there’s been a lot of history and awesome events there, or shows. So we’re exploring that: how to just continue to drive revenue and engage with the community.” Neff was reminded of the demand for concerts in Death Valley after attending a Kenny Chesney show in Greenville with Tigers HC Swinney and OC Riley. He explains: “Swinney’s like, ‘Hey, you need to come play in the Valley,’ and Kenny’s like, ‘That’s awesome. I’d do that’ And they’re looking at me like, ‘Hey Neff, make this happen.’ I got Chesney and Swinney leaning on me.” (link)

Sports gambling was a major topic at the Kansas Athletic Board of Directors meeting, and Jayhawks Deputy AD for Compliance and Legal Affairs Walawender says the goal is to make sure everyone from student managers to medical staff understands the consequences. “Before the Iowa case happened, we’d already planned to have a professional speaker come in and talk about just gambling, gambling addiction, and how basically it created and changed his entire — the course of his life. We’re fortunate the NCAA actually provides that as a free resource, but we do continue to talk about that.” Jayhawks AD Goff adds there’s “more work to do because it’s only going to continue to grow in popularity and there’s only going to continue to be more strain for our young people.” (link)

Adidas has what appears to be a “caste system” for designing college uniforms, according to UniWatch’s Lukas, who cites a message sent to Indiana fan Cotter by a senior designer at Adidas. Cotter observed IU’s new football uniforms appeared to be of lesser quality than Washington’s while the Hoosiers’ jerseys appeared to look like those the company sells to high schools through its catalog. The designer subsequently reached out and explained: “Adidas’ top 13 schools have a top six within them that get a little more custom design added in. That might be why the jerseys are different for football too. IU and Rutgers are part of the top 13 but not the top six (if that makes sense).” Lukas: “In other words: Texas A&M, Washington, and four other schools are part of Adidas’s tippy-top caste and get the best treatment, which is why we’ve seen the Aggies and Huskies in the newest template. Meanwhile, Indiana, Rutgers, and five other schools are part of the next caste.” (link)

A report from Moody’s Investors Service finds that college closures, while remaining rare, “will continue to accelerate gradually” as the higher education sector navigates financial challenges. The report states that “most troubled colleges will continue to operate as long as possible” and notes that predicting college closures is difficult due to potential outside funding from donors and states. Small, private colleges are the most vulnerable, and while Moody’s indicates more public institutions will merge or consolidate, it does not offer a prediction on how many will shutter. (link)

Saudi Arabia plans to launch a multibillion-dollar investment company to expand its sports portfolio following, according to Financial Times’ Al-Atrush and Agini, who report the “sports group, which will be part of the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, will have a war chest to fund its expansion…in a sign that Riyadh is committed to making further acquisitions, investments and joint ventures in football, tennis and other sports.” One source explains: “After the World Cup there’s definitely been a sense of bullishness to invest in global sports. It was driven by the fact that Qatar did it so well, and Saudi Arabia’s performance in the World Cup. There’s been a noticeable sea change in how they look at global sports.” Skema Business School (Paris) professor Chadwick adds: “Saudi Arabia is now shaping the commercial, industrial and geopolitical networks of sport. It’s beginning to test the limits of rules and governance.” (link)
