Wake Forest AD Currie covers a wide range of topics with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker, including revenue distribution, the role data and analytics has played in the baseball program’s success, how campus alignment leads to natural advantages and lots more. Currie also discusses the Deacs’ partnership with Truist, which is now the presenting sponsor of Wake Forest’s women athletics and tells Banker: “We took a few of our elite student-athletes down to Truist to meet with some of the highest level executives in Charlotte.” Despite the Truist name being replaced on the stadium by Allegacy, Truist is “still a very high level partner” whose relationship with Wake “transcends other parts of our University.” More from Currie, who also mentions that 80% of students are attending home (presumably football) games. Connect/MB Sports’ Banker also caught up with Northern Illinois AD Frazier at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the Huskies 2022-23 season, developments in NIL and the transfer portal, ways in which the NCAA could be a DEI leader, how the MAC has positioned itself ahead of the College Football Playoff expansion and lots more. Frazier also touches on the idea of football having its own governance structure with a separate commissioner and says he goes “back and forth with it.” On the one hand, there are differences between football and other sports, so Frazier believes it should be overseen in a different way; however, he balks at isolating it completely. There already exists a disconnect between the College Football Playoff and the NCAA, as Frazier notes the NCAA handles several of the administrative components but doesn’t host the championship and receives no money from it. Overall, he says: “For the good of the sport, I do believe if it's done right I think it'll be an excellent idea to pursue to make sure that we protect the game we make sure we protect the student-athletes and quite frankly protect the culture around college football.” Check out the full Q&A now live on Connect. We had a great conversation with the Bramlage family and as this process unfolds, we will continue to inform them of our progress and all potential naming ideas and options. They also know that in ISE, we have a partner that shares the same vision and understanding of the culture here at K-State." (link)

As the debate concerning EA Sports’ purported $500 offer to student-athletes who opt in continues, Action Network’s Rovell notes that in a “poll of more 46,000 people on Twitter last week, 75% of respondents said they would be OK with just having schools and not having specific players in the game. But that’s because many have reasoned that it doesn’t matter whether specific players are in the game, seeing as EA has allowed everything — including names on the back — to be modified.” Heitner Legal’s namesake, however, argues that allowing fans to essentially create their own rosters with existing players could still leave EA legally exposed. “To turn their heads and allow people to insert their own or buy rosters that updates the game to show players likenesses doesn’t at all absolve their legal responsibility here. Knowing what qualified as likenesses in the previous case means that they are explicitly allowing it to happen again.” For its part, EA reiterates that it has not made a concrete offer to players and reports to the contrary are speculation. Streaming accounted for 36.4% of all TV viewing time in May, followed by cable (31.1%), broadcast (22.8%) and other (9.7%), per the Wall Street Journal’s Rattner and Krouse, who note that “traditional media and entertainment companies have reported losses of more than $20B combined since early 2020 on their direct-to-consumer streaming businesses.” Netflix, whose profits have ranged from $500M to $1.5B during that period, is the lone exception. (link); Bloomberg’s Shaw revises the figures from his recent newsletter to show that “profits at the biggest entertainment companies fell almost 90% over the last decade (from $23.4B to $2.6B).” The Atlantic’s Thompson subsequently observes: “The Netflix revolution and streaming media is, for now, one of the most successful profit-destroying interventions in modern business history. When Craigslist, Google, Facebook etc ate newspapers for lunch, they grabbed the profits and moved them from publishing to tech. Where did the film and TV profits go? Some went to online advertising but a lot of them were just incinerated to attract subscribers.” (link)

More than 30M users signed up for Threads in less than 24 hours, and while the platform is not carrying ads yet, Sparo CEO Lopez tells the Wall Street Journal it will have an innate advantage over other platforms because of its connection to Meta’s ecosystem. “The superpower that Threads has that Twitter doesn’t is that it doesn’t need to learn about the 30 million users who subscribed to the platform overnight. Chances are that from their Instagram, Facebook, and even WhatsApp activity, Threads already knows quite a bit about you.” The launch also elicited a letter from a Twitter lawyer alleging that Meta hired Twitter employees and assigned them to help build Threads. A Meta spokesman denies the allegation. (link)

On3’s Wittry writes on San Diego State’s method of communication regarding its Mountain West intentions with Hawaii President Lassner saying of the initial, June 13th, email sent by the Aztecs to league leaders: “I was surprised the letter did not include a ‘Confidential’ watermark.” Commissioner Nevarez followed up with the group the next day: “In working through the process with SDSU, (President) Adela (de la Torre) has just requested that Presidents not forward the letter to Athletic Directors to limit the chance of it becoming public. I’m guessing some may have already forwarded by now. The Board should keep SDSU’s requests confidential until it has a chance to meet and confer. I’d advise keeping your athletic directors updated verbally without sharing the actual letter at this time. If you’ve already shared with your athletic director, please remind them this is confidential until we agree on a communication strategy.” (link)

Puck’s Byers offers his perspective on the goings on within ESPN and cites one former company executive who explains the network no longer competes with cable and popular sports brands but rather the biggest tech platforms, all of which are eager to increase their portfolio of live sports, either through exclusive rights deals or licensing. “The model they backed themselves into is unsustainable and a vicious downward spiral given the cord-cutting landscape. The pool of competitors is increasing, and they have a lot more cash to spend than ESPN. Meanwhile, the downstream benefit of a new ‘sports’ subscriber for Google, Amazon, YouTube, etcetera, is greater across multiple revenue streams than it is for ESPN.” Moving forward, one industry veteran tells Byers that the “truth is, nothing makes a difference that isn’t a live game. The solution, Byers continues, may involve spinning off ESPN, potentially with ABC. Or it may involve selling ESPN to private equity. “At the very least, it seems everything is on the table.” (link)

LSU gymnast Dunne has established The Livvy Fund in partnership with the Bayou Traditions collective, per On3’s Nakos, who reports: “As part of the initiative, On3 and Accelerator Active Energy have committed funds to support Tiger athletes with financial opportunities and business guidance.” The fund will place an emphasis on equitable access to deals and funds, and Dunne says: “As a female student-athlete, I have been fortunate enough to build a strong social media following and establish valuable brand partnerships that have launched my career in ways I couldn’t imagine. I am excited to build on this momentum by leveraging my connections and sharing my knowledge in the NIL space to create more opportunities for LSU female-student athletes while emphasizing the importance of bringing NIL funds to women in college sports.” (link)

The Ohio State-focused 1870 Society began publishing short-form videos featuring Buckeyes student-athletes this week and plans to begin monetizing the videos with ads beginning July 15, according to On3’s Wittry. The 1870 Society is the second collective to launch a platform in collaboration with Firework, Innovative New Media and Urban Edge Networks. Georgia’s Classic City Collective began using the platform last month. The 1870 Society President Markiewicz says the collective has partnered with more than 50 Buckeyes student-athletes across 14 programs so far and adds: “We see ourselves as a content creation company. We need to create content that drives eyeballs to the website so that people are seeing our subscription packages and people are being entertained at the same time. That way they’ll have a better understanding for how 1870 operates, which is different than others, and see what our values are. Hopefully, Buckeye Nation is entertained enough by the content we’re producing that they understand the need in the NIL space to keep Ohio State elite on the field. That’s the end goal.” (link)

The New York Liberty’s Stewart and Minnesota Lynx’s Collier announce they are forming a new women’s basketball league to give the top WNBA players another option for playing domestically in the offseason once the league's new prioritization rules go into full effect next year. ESPN’s Shelburne reports the new league, which will be called Unrivaled, “would run from January through March and feature 30 of the top professional women's players on six teams, playing games of 3-on-3 and one-on-one at a soundstage in Miami. The goal is to raise enough in private funding and sponsorships to provide the players commensurate pay with what they make during the WNBA season. That would help offset the lucrative contracts they'd be giving up overseas because of new league rules requiring players to return from international commitments by the start of WNBA training camps.” Stewart: "It's the ability for players to stay home, to be in a market like Miami where we can just be the buzz and create that with the best WNBA players. We can't keep fighting [the WNBA's prioritization rule]. It is a rule that takes away our choices, which should never be a thing, especially as women, but it is still a rule." (link)
