Grand Canyon AD Boggs caught up with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss a handful of items ranging from holistic student-athlete care to if the Lopes would consider adding Football, as well as thoughts on the Summer Basketball Initiative proposals. On the first topic: “The fact that our university is so student-centered, even outside of athletics we have all this support…what we have from athletics is on top of that campus support.” As for the potential for Football: “We do get that question quite a bit and I know it’s because we have a large campus with over 25,000 students on campus now and we have really great facilities. Right now our focus to make sure our current programs are really invested in and our basketball programs are where they need to be. Our goal is to continue to win championships, but not just win championships and advance in the NCAA Tournament.” More, including if the Summer Basketball Initiative could be an opt-in by programs & not a mandatory addition to the load for student-athletes & coaching staffs. UNLV AD Harper Q&As with the Las Vegas Sun’s Brewer. On the impact of Allegiant Stadium: “We could quantify it in one simple way with Allegiant Stadium in the very first year (with fans in 2021) seeing a net revenue of $5.5 million strictly from six games. So, six games based on ticket sales, both premium and regular, net concessions and parking. Obviously, we had Iowa State that year, so that just shows us that the type of opponent that travels we need to consistently schedule because that helps us.” As for conference realignment: “The only thing I could say to that is we have to take care of home. We have to take care of what we can control here at UNLV. The Mountain West Conference is a very strong conference, as evidenced by what San Diego State did in basketball this past year. Where we sit today is doing everything in our power to make sure that our brand and our logo and the interest of UNLV sports is relevant, and we have to make sure we stay relevant every single day.” More. Former Wisconsin AD & Football HC Alvarez on Badgers AD McIntosh’s decision to make a Football leadership change: “I don’t think anyone was happy with how we were playing. Mac made the decision, and it was a very difficult decision. Our coach had won 75 percent of his games or whatever Paul (Chryst) won. Paul’s a good person. So that’s hard to do. But Mac felt strongly about the decision and felt like he had to move forward and I support his decision. I just think he showed strength in the leadership role in making that move.” (link)

USA Today’s Berkowitz notes an interesting provision in the contract extension for Iowa Women’s Basketball HC Bluder: “New amendment includes highly unusual provision showing Iowa's confidence that Bluder will finish her career there: She'll get $500,000 on the Jan. 1 after the end of her employment at Iowa, even if she ends it to take job elsewhere. Contract is silent about her owing a buyout.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Brown explores how the state of Minnesota’s North Star Promise scholarship program could impact universities and athletics in neighboring North Dakota, where North Dakota and North Dakota State rely on MN for 28% and 45% of their student populations, respectively. “If a North Dakota institution was recruiting a Minnesota athlete whose tuition and fees could be completely covered by the state, prying them across state lines with an inferior aid package could become much harder. This disparity could be an even bigger problem for North Dakota’s D-II schools, like Minot State, or in how UND and NDSU recruit walk-ons.” North Dakota State AD Larsen contextualizes the potential impact: “As a state, we depend on out-of-state recruitment not just for enrollment, but for workforce development. We need people to come to North Dakota and stay here.” (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Bachman looks at the depleted rosters of several Women’s World Cup teams, thanks to ACL injuries. Bachman: “It’s difficult to know whether and how much ACL injuries are rising globally in women’s soccer, or whether the current run is an alarming outlier. Such injuries are more common among female athletes, however, and far more common among female soccer players in the U.S., according to research.” New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery Chief of Sports Medicine Pearle: “This is an incredible epidemic.” Pearle notes that ACL injuries are 6x more common among female high school soccer players than males, and that a girl who plays soccer year-round has a 16% chance of injuring her ACL during her high school years. Lots more on the changing landscape of the sport, overuse and how neuromuscular training can help prevent the injuries. (link)

On the topic of the new Pac-12 media rights deals, Arizona President Robbins tells CBS Sports’ Dodd: “There are still just discussions. Nothing definitive, that's for sure. I think that means the narrative [that] it's going to be an all-streaming deal … is ridiculous.” Robbins also comments on San Diego State’s current position: “My guess would be they'll let things cool down and [the MWC will] take [SDSU] back.” (link)

Add Missouri to the list of states with NIL laws preventing the NCAA or conferences from investigating NIL activities or entertaining a complaint, effective August 28. Notably, the law, per On3’s Wittry, “allows employees, including coaches, to identify, create and negotiate NIL deals. The law allows public charities with 501(c)(3) status to enter into NIL agreements and it protects contract terms under the Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA).” Mizzou AD Reed-Francois: “This amendment will provide our schools and our current and future student-athletes with the flexibility needed to remain competitive, as the State of Missouri continues to lead the way in the modern-day evolution of intercollegiate athletics. We look forward to the next steps in this important process.” (link)

Northwestern FB HC Fitzgerald has been suspended for two weeks without pay, effective immediately, as an investigation found sufficient evidence the coaching staff was aware of hazing. As a result, NU will discontinue practices at Camp Kenosha (in Wisconsin) permanently, implement a staff member to monitor the locker room that is independent of the FB staff, create an online, anonymous reporting tool and require all FB personnel and staff to complete mandatory annual anti-hazing training. The Athletic’s Vannini and Dochterman provide context for the Wildcats moving forward: “Where it gets tricky is ‘the investigation did not uncover evidence pointing to specific misconduct by any individual football player or coach.’ … Suspending Fitzgerald for two weeks without pay during the recruiting dead period and before training camp is akin to not paying him for going on vacation. But the public relations hit is significant for a coach with nary an off-field issue to his otherwise sterling resume. Likewise, Northwestern takes all of the right measures to ensure hazing is not tolerated in football and indirectly in every other sport. But the real impact will come this football season and beyond, especially if another incident emerges. Then we’ll know if hazing is cultural to Northwestern or just a series of sporadic juvenile incidents.” (link)

Bonuses include $100K for winning the national championship and making the Final Four, $65K for $300K in WBB season ticket sales and a 15% annual salary increase for reaching the Elite Eight. The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Bishop & Sugiura report Georgia Tech is in discussions with Hyundai to sell the naming rights to the field at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field. Per the article: “Hyundai, which is building a $5.5 billion electric vehicle plant near Savannah, is the corporation with interest in purchasing the rights to the name of the field at the stadium. The name of the stadium is not for sale, a person familiar with the situation said, just the name of the field.” Technically from the Yellow Jackets: “We are always exploring opportunities to bring in additional revenues to invest in our programs and student-athletes. Naming opportunities in partnership with good brands that are consistent with our tradition of excellence are always on the table. At this point though, we have no new naming agreements to report.” (link)

LEARFIELD EVP of Digital/SIDEARM Sports Founder and President Rubin sits down with Connect’s Garcia Cichosz from the 2023 NACDA Convention to dive into all things digital, SIDEARM’s latest initiatives, the influence of AI and much more. On the latter, Rubin states: “Anyone who does not lean into AI, might as well not be in the industry. This is going to change the way we live, the way we work. It’s not just about efficiency, it's also about efficacy. … To me, this isn’t about every sports communication professional, ‘Oh gosh, this is doing what I do.’ For decades, this profession has talked about how overwhelmed they are, how there’s so much on their plate, social media, video, and so in my mind this allows them to automate a portion of their job that allows them to focus on what I think are the stories that people want to hear, which are the student-athletes, the coaches, the venues and the institutional stories.” Lots more only on Connect.
