Northwestern Hazing Allegations…
+ The Daily Northwestern reports the allegations of hazing within the Wildcats’ Football program included student-athletes getting “restrained by a group of 8-10 upperclassmen dressed in various ‘Purge-like’ masks, who would then begin ‘dry-humping’ the victim in a dark locker room.” The practice was called “running,” “which was used to punish team members, primarily freshman, for mistakes made on the field and in practice.” Former student-athletes who spoke to The Daily believe HC Fitzgerald knew about the hazing due to a clapping motion he would make during practices that was the same as clapping motion made during the “running” ritual (the “Shrek clap”). Lots more. (link)
+ Late last night Northwestern President Schill released a letter indicating the university would review the two-week suspension already handed down to Fitzgerald: “In determining an appropriate penalty for the head coach, I focused too much on what the report concluded he didn't know and not enough on what he should have known. As the head coach of one of our athletics programs, coach Fitzgerald is not only responsible for what happens within the program but also must take great care to uphold our institutional commitment to the student experience. ... Clearly, he failed to uphold that commitment, and I failed to sufficiently consider that failure in levying a sanction.” (link)
+ A statement was also released last night by the “ENTIRE” Northwestern football team, which includes: “It is disheartened to see that the allegations brought forth against our team have been exaggerated and twisted into lies. These fabrications have been made with the intention of harming our program and tarnish the reputation of our dedicated players and coaching staff. We firmly deny the validity of these accusations and stand united in our assertion that they do not reflect the true character of our team.” The statement goes on to say Fitzgerald had no knowledge of the allegations. The attorney for former West Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Huggins, David Campbell, says his client never formally resigned from his position following his DUI arrest and that if the school does not reinstate Huggins, he will sue. Campbell says Huggins’ resignation correspondence with the school did not come from him but from his wife, June Huggins. WVU’s response indicates Huggins will not be reinstated and that it will defend itself against any “spurious allegations.” WVU VP/General Counsel Taylor in a note to Campbell: “The conflicting communications and correspondence from various counsel on Mr. Huggins's behalf leave the University unclear as to its next steps: continue working collaboratively with Mr. Fitzsimmons on common resignation/retirement benefits for a former University employee and as outlined in Mr. Huggins' contract; or respond to meritless demand letters and possible frivolous litigation brought forth by you.” More. The latest from Notre Dame AD Swarbrick comes from an interview with Blue & Gold’s Horka: “The rate of change in this industry is accelerating. I have no idea what it will look like in two years much less 10. I don’t spend any time trying to predict that future other than the things I’m certain will occur. We want to be involved in shaping that future. We focus on that as much as anything. Notre Dame should help lead. We get the opportunity to do that. As long as we’re in that position, we’ll manage. [...] Our independence has never been more valuable than it is right now. Nothing has occurred in the past year that has caused me to reevaluate. It’s been just the opposite.” (link)

Liberty AD McCaw continues to provide insights into the Flames department via a multi-part series with A Sea of Red. What’s on the facilities docket? “We have three that we are in the midst of right now, the baseball pitching lab we are finalizing plans for that right now and that will go out to bid here shortly. Golf practice facility is a big project for that program. We finalized the plans, that’s being bid on right now, hopefully that will get underway before too long. We’re also making some improvements at Campus East for lacrosse and field hockey those programs will benefit from those as well.” As for the institution’s long-term future: “It’s really hard to predict where we might be 5, 7, or 10 years from now, but certainly Liberty has an athletic program, a University that is upwardly mobile. We are well resourced. We have great facilities, great personnel. Actually, we just did a SWOT analysis with our staff, the things that really stood out is we have a great mission-culture, we get great support from the University, tremendous personnel, facilities, and resources, and we do a really good job of developing our student-athletes. When you combine all of those strengths, which they are in our case, it really gives you an opportunity to have a lot of success. I think our future is very bright. I think our best years are ahead of us.” More. (link)

Oregon State Senior Assoc. AD of External Operations Elcano joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle at the 2023 NACDA Convention. Keys will be handed over to the newly renovated Reser Stadium on July 18, with some test runs at the new digs ahead of the first football home game. For the first time, there will be 360 degree access to the entire stadium. Elcano reflects on the first women’s gymnastics sellout in school history, says version two of “Build the Dam” will include NIL and other “tweaks” to line up with the changes in the industry and talks about what it was like when AD Barnes was out for a few weeks recovering from his medical situation. “Pitch in and pick up where needed” was the mentality of the senior staff in Barnes’ absence. “We missed him, but we didn’t miss a beat.” More. “Freshmen are a bad investment. They're all rentals.” That’s one DI men’s basketball coach to CBS Sports’ Norlander, who digs into how the transfer portal, NIL and recruiting has dropped the value of high school prospects. A Big Ten coach: “The thing is, they get the one-time transfer. If you can get a kid after he leaves, after his freshman or sophomore year, and then he's stuck? That sh##’s like gold, man." Oklahoma State HC Boynton pegs it at 50%: “This spring, I would think half as many, half as much activity happened from a high school student standpoint as from two years ago.” In two more years, when the COVID bonus year of eligibility process has played out, many believe the value of a high school prospect will rise again. As for the impact of NIL, UCLA HC Cronin: “The people that are getting the best transfers are paying. And I'm not mad at them. It just is what it is. We've all got to do things that fit our program. At Cincinnati, I had to get a certain type of kid that I could get there. Now, NIL and the way things are in the portal, there are certain kids that I can't get. There are certain kids in the portal that are looking for money. So, it isn't that Mick Cronin's saying, 'I don't believe in the portal' — I can't get them.” Lots more. (link)

Last week, the Big Ten offered a four-day B1G Experience at the network’s River North office for former Big Ten student-athletes. Sixteen participants got the chance to learn about various aspects of sports media, from studio and game analysis to interviewing to makeup and styling. The networks put six of the 14 participants from last year’s inaugural event on the air and this year’s applicant list topped 60. Big Ten Network President McGillicuddy: “We are unique in that we’re owned by Fox Sports and the conference, so we have a priority around educational experiences. We wanted to find an opportunity for student-athletes specifically. It was just natural for us because it’s a great opportunity to identify new talent and diversify our top talent pool.” (link)

Bruin Capital founder & CEO Pyne was on CNBC late last week & talked about the direction of sports rights: “Long-term you’re going to see more and more mixed deals going forward. [...] As the cord-cutting goes on, that pricing power isn’t there the way it used to be … and these other companies -- Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Apple -- are growing exponentially so they’re going to have more and more clout. It’s only logical that sports will be a destination for them more and more in the future.” (link)

Speaking at The Economic Club of Washington, D.C., JPMorgan Chase Chairman & CEO Dimon contends America has “the best hand ever dealt of any country on this planet today ever. We have peaceful, wonderful neighbors in Canada and Mexico. We've got the biggest military barriers ever built called the Atlantic and the Pacific. We have all the food, water and energy we will ever need. We have the best military on the planet, and we will for as long as we have the best economy. … We have the best universities on the planet – there are great ones elsewhere, but these are the best. We still educate most of the kids who start businesses around the world. … Yes, we have problems, but travel around the world, go to these other countries and tell me what you think.” (link)

Grand Canyon AD Boggs caught up with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss a handful of items ranging from holistic student-athlete care to if the Lopes would consider adding Football, as well as thoughts on the Summer Basketball Initiative proposals. On the first topic: “The fact that our university is so student-centered, even outside of athletics we have all this support…what we have from athletics is on top of that campus support.” As for the potential for Football: “We do get that question quite a bit and I know it’s because we have a large campus with over 25,000 students on campus now and we have really great facilities. Right now our focus to make sure our current programs are really invested in and our basketball programs are where they need to be. Our goal is to continue to win championships, but not just win championships and advance in the NCAA Tournament.” More, including if the Summer Basketball Initiative could be an opt-in by programs & not a mandatory addition to the load for student-athletes & coaching staffs. UNLV AD Harper Q&As with the Las Vegas Sun’s Brewer. On the impact of Allegiant Stadium: “We could quantify it in one simple way with Allegiant Stadium in the very first year (with fans in 2021) seeing a net revenue of $5.5 million strictly from six games. So, six games based on ticket sales, both premium and regular, net concessions and parking. Obviously, we had Iowa State that year, so that just shows us that the type of opponent that travels we need to consistently schedule because that helps us.” As for conference realignment: “The only thing I could say to that is we have to take care of home. We have to take care of what we can control here at UNLV. The Mountain West Conference is a very strong conference, as evidenced by what San Diego State did in basketball this past year. Where we sit today is doing everything in our power to make sure that our brand and our logo and the interest of UNLV sports is relevant, and we have to make sure we stay relevant every single day.” More. Former Wisconsin AD & Football HC Alvarez on Badgers AD McIntosh’s decision to make a Football leadership change: “I don’t think anyone was happy with how we were playing. Mac made the decision, and it was a very difficult decision. Our coach had won 75 percent of his games or whatever Paul (Chryst) won. Paul’s a good person. So that’s hard to do. But Mac felt strongly about the decision and felt like he had to move forward and I support his decision. I just think he showed strength in the leadership role in making that move.” (link)

USA Today’s Berkowitz notes an interesting provision in the contract extension for Iowa Women’s Basketball HC Bluder: “New amendment includes highly unusual provision showing Iowa's confidence that Bluder will finish her career there: She'll get $500,000 on the Jan. 1 after the end of her employment at Iowa, even if she ends it to take job elsewhere. Contract is silent about her owing a buyout.” (link)

PGA Tour Commissioner Monahan will return to his role on July 17 after recovering from a medical situation. Monahan in a memo to the tour’s policy board and players: “Thank you for your support and leadership these last few weeks. With the support of my family and thanks to world class medical care, my health has improved dramatically. I am eager to engage with each of you -- as well as our players, partners, fans and our PGA TOUR family -- to address any questions and protect the game we treasure.” He has been on leave since June 13. Extra Points purveyor Brown explores how the state of Minnesota’s North Star Promise scholarship program could impact universities and athletics in neighboring North Dakota, where North Dakota and North Dakota State rely on MN for 28% and 45% of their student populations, respectively. “If a North Dakota institution was recruiting a Minnesota athlete whose tuition and fees could be completely covered by the state, prying them across state lines with an inferior aid package could become much harder. This disparity could be an even bigger problem for North Dakota’s D-II schools, like Minot State, or in how UND and NDSU recruit walk-ons.” North Dakota State AD Larsen contextualizes the potential impact: “As a state, we depend on out-of-state recruitment not just for enrollment, but for workforce development. We need people to come to North Dakota and stay here.” (link)

Louisiana received $44M+ from the state legislature in capital funding for the new fiscal year, roughly $8M more than LSU received. The Ragin’ Cajuns got $15M earmarked for the construction of a kinesiology, hospitality management and athletic administration complex. The University of Louisiana System schools combined to get $193M in funding, with those in the LSU System combined for $130M and those in the Southern University System were granted $60M. (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Bachman looks at the depleted rosters of several Women’s World Cup teams, thanks to ACL injuries. Bachman: “It’s difficult to know whether and how much ACL injuries are rising globally in women’s soccer, or whether the current run is an alarming outlier. Such injuries are more common among female athletes, however, and far more common among female soccer players in the U.S., according to research.” New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery Chief of Sports Medicine Pearle: “This is an incredible epidemic.” Pearle notes that ACL injuries are 6x more common among female high school soccer players than males, and that a girl who plays soccer year-round has a 16% chance of injuring her ACL during her high school years. Lots more on the changing landscape of the sport, overuse and how neuromuscular training can help prevent the injuries. (link)
