Northwestern News…
+ NU President Schill reverses course, terminates Football HC Fitzgerald. Schill writes, in part, in a letter to campus: “Over the last 72 hours, I have spent a great deal of time in thought and in discussions with people who love our University — the Chair and members of our Board of Trustees, faculty leadership, students, alumni and Coach Fitzgerald himself. I have also received many phone calls, text messages and emails from those I know, and those I don’t, sharing their thoughts. While I am appreciative of the feedback and considered it in my decision-making, ultimately, the decision to originally suspend Coach Fitzgerald was mine and mine alone, as is the decision to part ways with him. [...] As the entire six-month independent investigation was confidential, I only recently learned many of the details, including the complainant’s identity. I spoke with his parents on Friday and the student on Sunday. [...] I recognize that my decision will not be universally applauded, and there will be those in our community who may vehemently disagree with it. Ultimately, I am charged with acting in the best interests of the entire University, and this decision is reflective of that. The damage done to our institution is significant, as is the harm to some of our students.” More, including Schill stating the full investigative report will remain closed. (link)
+ Fitzgerald releases a statement of his own, which indicates he has hired veteran trial attorney, Dan Webb, "to take the necessary steps to protect my rights in accordance with the law.” Fitzgerald also reiterates the university’s investigation found he did not have knowledge of hazing. (link)
+ On3’s Staples: “I’m told Fitzgerald had about $42 million remaining on his deal. So if you’re wondering why he’s hiring a big-time attorney, that’s why.” (link)
+ Sportico’s McCann dives into the coming legal proceedings. Notably: “There’s also reason to believe that the scandal will only widen in the days ahead, as happened with the racism allegations. Don’t be surprised if this is the start of a pattern—especially if university officials worry about being blamed. They could leak information to redirect blame to others.” (link)

Former West Virginia Men’s Basketball Head Coach Huggins contends he neither wrote the resignation statement, nor told his players of his decision to resign. Instead, Huggins insists he told the team that he did not know what was going to happen. Huggins has voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation center and plans to remain there until he is “cleared to return to [his] active coaching duties.” According to Huggins’ lawyer: “based on the plain language of the Employment Agreement and clear West Virginia law, an email from Coach Huggins' wife to Steve Uryasz, WVU's Deputy Athletics Director, is not effective notice of resignation under the Employment Agreement.” WVU VP/General Counsel Taylor and the school’s response: “There is no support in the law of on these facts to suggest that Mr. Huggins may now ignore his resignation and his actions upon which all have relied, undo his voluntary separation, and return to work as if none of this ever occurred." Sports Illustrated’s Forde has more color on the gambling saga that led to the exit of them-Alabama Baseball HC Bohannon: “(Bert) Neff was texting with Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon via the encrypted messaging app Signal while at the betting window, attempting to place the wager, the sources say. His texting was indiscreet, to the point that the book’s video surveillance cameras were able to zoom in on the details of Neff and Bohannon’s text exchange, making Bohannon’s name visible later in screenshots.” Forde also indicates the situation has extended to a probe at Xavier, as well as within the Indiana Gaming Commission, as associates of Neff’s were trying to get action on the LSU-Alabama game in the Hoosier State. More, including background on Neff’s brief playing career at Louisville, as one former teammate calls him a “total clown.” (link)

Kansas AD Goff reiterates that going under 40K capacity at Memorial Stadium was never under consideration, despite one consultant’s suggestion, which Goff says came from an “economic impact lens.” The consultant’s recommendation for the mixed-use development would include a conference center, hotel and concert venue. More Goff: “Frankly speaking, I immersed myself in the report, but when I see a recommendation around capacity from that particular lens, we value it, but that’s just one of many points of data that helps inform around what capacity should be.” Goff goes on to explain that recent attendance figures should not be a limiting factor in capacity considerations: “If you only look back on the last 10, 12 years, and use that attendance as a primary driver of what you think capacity should be, you’re missing the mark. The last decade to 12 years is not the aspirations we have for support and attendance around this program.” (link)

UTEP AD Senter joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle at the 2023 NACDA Convention in Orlando. The pair cover a number of topics, including hiring new coaches, adding a sport, NIL and the new Texas state law. Senter on the latter: “I have mixed emotions about it. I think as a general rule… we don’t have different rules for our children. You have house rules and so do I on how we’re going to raise our children and the rules they have to abide by as long as they live under our roofs. I don’t know how this is all going to work when our state can have different NIL rules than other states and how our state law may preempt our agreement with other universities to abide by a common set of rules. … I really want there to be uniformity across all NCAA member institutions.” More in the full convo, which is live on Connect. The latest from Evanston includes three former Northwestern football student-athletes telling the student newspaper of a “culture of enabling racism” via various racist remarks & acts from fellow student-athletes & coaches. Notable allegations from the student-athletes include “...head coach Pat Fitzgerald would ask Black players and coaches to cut off longer hairstyles — including dreadlocks — so that they were more in line with what Fitzgerald called the ‘Wildcat Way.’ [...] The stuff that refers to how Black players are treated, in my mind, that was a form of hazing. [...] An instance in which a former offensive line coach joked by asking Diaz how to clean a dirty room. The coach then made a racist joke about how Diaz’s family must know how to clean houses, both former players said. [...] Your Blackness was not allowed to shine through, whether it was how you carried yourself all your way down to your hair.” More. (link)

First-year Northwestern Baseball HC Foster is also accused of promoting a toxic environment, which included three staff members leaving the program very early during the recently completed season. Inside NU indicates a university investigation was launched back in November & concluded in February, but did not include interviews with any student-athletes. Additionally from the article: “The report suggested that university HR investigation found Foster guilty of making inappropriate comments to a female staffer, as well as bullying and making derogatory comments. Further, the report shared that Foster had made racist remarks and encouraged players not to seek treatment for injury. According to the report, one player was forced to engage in a ‘punishment run,’ which lasted for the ‘vast majority of a 2.5-hour practice.’” (link)

Blair notes a tremendous emphasis on connection between UT and the City of Toledo, as well as talk about future facility use and projects. Blair emphasizes the need for more turf and indoor spaces in the community, including wanting to get baseball and softball back on campus, which he says can be done creatively despite having a defined campus footprint. CBS’ Dodd camps with leaders at the newest quartet of Big 12 members as they have poured nearly $1B combined to prepare for the jump. UCF AD Mohajir on the dollars compared to the Big Ten or SEC: “The Big Ten and SEC have always had more money than other leagues. It doesn't always equate to championships. Would you say the Big Ten has separated themselves from the SEC? So, the SEC is one [spot] ahead of us.” BYU AD Holmoe: "I think the independence was a mixed bag. It gave us the opportunity to play whoever we wanted, whenever we wanted. During that time, we played a lot of big-time programs in their stadiums. With a national fan base, we gave access to our fans. Cougar Nation got bigger. Revenues increased. … We learned about what we are and how we can be." Houston boss Pezman on UH’s timing: “We'd have given our left testicle to get in two years ago. Now, we're in a better spot.” As for on the field, Houston Asst. AD for FB Operations-GM Dorchester: "No offense to Temple, you're not going to play Temple [in the AAC]. You're not going to play South Florida, which has the worst defense in the country. … There's no layup in [the Big 12]. It's why the SEC is not getting rid of Vanderbilt. They want the bottom. That's why the Big Ten brings in a Rutgers. They need the doormats. The big dogs need the layups. You look around the B12, who is the layup? There is no one.” (link)

The iconic logo for the Heisman Trophy Trust has been updated by Bosack & Co. Principal Bosack: “The sandbox was pretty small — that was a lot of the challenge. We weren’t going to change the pose, of course. What we did do is change some of the perspective for better use across a variety of digital and analog applications. We restored some of the refinement and craft of the trophy back. So hard, in today’s crowded media world, to be unique. So, if you have something already unique and ownable like that pose, really the goal has to be to keep what you have and elevate and add prestige.” (link)

INFLCR Founder and CEO Cavale camps with On3’s Prisbell to talk about the future of collectives. “I think the model that Texas A&M is doing is something you’re going to see a lot more schools do. It solves a lot of problems. Whether they’re donors, businesses, or fans, they’re used to hearing from the school about donation campaigns, capital campaigns, scholarship funds, ticket sales, merchandise sales and events. This is just another addition for that same audience to hear about, and it should be done in unison with the school’s existing efforts. […] It becomes very confusing to these three groups of people [donors, businesses and fans] who have these dollars. And that’s why Texas and other states are following to try to bring the efforts of the collective, which I think will stay around for a long time, in conjunction with the development department, the MMR [multimedia rights partner] and the other people.” Cavale also believes many collectives have hit their annual fundraising peaks, adding: “I think most schools will see that it stays steady or even decreases, and brands and fans are going to have to make up the difference. Donors are the investors for these school entities now, collectives, that are brokering NIL deals, helping athletes facilitate them. But investors don’t just keep investing without revenue, and real NIL revenue comes from brands and fans, not donors.” (link)

Louisville HCs spoke at a recent 502Circle event about NIL for their respective sports, with WBB HC Walz stating: “I think there’s high. There’s low. You’ve got some that are millions. And then you got some that are just trying to figure out how can we get $5,000 here or $10,000 there? I think that’s the struggle and I think that’s the potential landmine that you’re coming into is this going to be something where we go back 25 years ago where the programs that invested in women’s basketball, those are the ones that won.” Baseball HC McDonnell on priorities: “Where I think you need to be is let’s address the issue of ‘Hey, we only have 11.7 scholarships so how about we first help these kids get more scholarship money?' So, any money that you give to let’s say the 502Circle, specifically baseball, that’s going to help pay the difference in their tuition. Might help pay for their dorm. Might help pay for a meal card. It’s baby steps, right? Let’s first get to that level where we’re helping our student-athletes pay their bills and then from there, alright, if we’re going to compete with the big boys, yeah, we might have to throw in some zeroes and a crooked number and try to compete with schools that are maybe giving more to their student-athletes.” (link)

The Las Vegas Sun’s Grimala talks to Friends of UNILV Chairman Paulos about remaining competitive amongst competing collectives, with the Rebels-focused group paying its student-athletes between $500K-600K the last two years. Paulos’ goal is to up spending to $1.5M for this year, adding: “We’re raising from behind. (Nevada) Reno has a budget, I’m told, of $1.2 million. New Mexico has spent $1.5 million. I know New Mexico outbid a couple of schools for some of their players. […] I think the universities need more say. They’ve taken the entire thing out of university’s hands, which I don’t think is right. But the kids should get paid.” (link)
