A number of items from last month’s DIII Championships Committee meeting. On FB Playoff expansion, the committee is exploring expanding to 40 teams, adding a sixth round to the championship thus moving the Stagg Bowl to around the new year and having 16 teams competing in the first round with 24 byes. The rationale for this approach being that members would not need to add costs for bringing student-athletes to campus a week earlier in August. Of note, the committee is not married to eight which is the FB committee’s preference, but “it should align with the championship access model being considered.” On Women’s Ice Hockey, there will be seven AQ conferences for 2024. The committee is exploring a pilot for half of the championship sites between 2025 and 2030 to be held at predetermined sites and half on the campus of the highest seed to reflect the Men’s Ice Hockey Championship and will seek feedback from the membership before moving forward. Following the budget priorities survey sent to members, the committee identified “increasing championships access, travel party increases, per diem increases and giving sport committees the flexibility of adding one or two flights in bracketing to separate higher regionally ranked teams in the first round” as four consistently emerging concepts, while also pointing to officials fees and increased per diem on high-cost cities as other items for consideration.The committee also approved the ASC’s request for Sul Ross State to compete as a DIII in-region opponent for 2023-24 should the Lobos be accepted into the DII membership process later this month and approved eliminating the waiver deadlines for in-region waiver requests. Meta announces its NIL Empower 3.0, “an incubator program aimed to empower female college athletes to maximize NIL opportunities and prepare for life after sports.” Instagram is on the hunt for 30 female student-athletes to go through the five-month program, which is threefold: 1) education; 2) incentives; 3) career development.
