News from Northwestern…
+ Wildcats President Schill & AD Gragg spoke to Football student-athletes in an hour-long meeting last night. Schill was questioned about his change of course on discipline for former HC Fitzgerald: “Schill’s response, per sources, was that it was a mistake to give Fitzgerald only a two-week suspension and that the decision to fire him came after rethinking things and having additional communication with people such as the former player who served as the whistleblower in this situation.” (link)
+ ESPN’s Rittenberg gets this from a source on NU’s communications plan, which has still not included a press conference or meeting with the media: “There's no communication, no plan. The players are sitting there, like, what's going on? The coaches are sitting there, what's going on?” (link)
+ More from Rittenberg as Fitzgerald’s attorney says his client was fired for cause & that he’s identified “two different major breach of contract claims.” Further: “I cannot understand how you could terminate someone for cause when they [Northwestern] admit that their own lawyer does not have any evidence that my client ever knew anything at all, about any of the alleged hazing behavior. If I present that to a jury someday, a jury is going [to] have a hard time believing that you can terminate someone for cause when they didn't know anything about [the incidents]. [...] There's a huge reputational issue that will be part of it. If we were to proceed with litigation, it would be a very large damage case because he can claim loss compensation for eight years left on his contract. And 10 years in the future, he can't replace it. So you're talking about a huge amount of money.” (link)

Recent reporting by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution suggesting Georgia has taken sexual assault allegations against football student-athletes lightly prompted UGA football head coach Smart and school officials to hold a media briefing yesterday. Smart: “We take these allegations extremely serious — I take these allegations extremely serious. “We do not tolerate sexual misconduct in our organization. I’m a football coach, I’m responsible for this program, and it starts with me. I see this through the lens of, I have a wife and a daughter. When I think about these situations, I think about them. It’s personal to me. But I will not tolerate false accusations that this program or this university condone sexual misconduct. We have no tolerance for sexual assault or abuse. Never have and never will.” Further, the school sent a demand for retraction letter to the AJC for the paper’s story published online June 27 and in print July 2. (link - article, link - full letter)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Illinois State is ready to roll for those of you interested in pursuing the position. Ball State AD Mitchell on his use of a D1.dossier: “Possessing information lacks true value if it’s not pertinent, and D1.dossier offers a competitive advantage because it provides the right information to prospective candidates to help them prepare for an interview and the job itself when hired. I developed my unique outline to help get ready for my interviews at Ball State while using the D1.dossier feature. I found the information to be relevant and comprehensive. D1.dossiers is a must-have resource for college coaches and administrators.” (link)

Texas AD Del Conte visited with Inside Texas, talks about the upcoming move to the SEC: “We know this is our last year [in the] Big 12 and we’re doing everything we can [to] focus our attention on this year. Because all the hoopla of where we’re going is great, but that’s in 2024. One of the things we talked about is ‘embracing the hate’ (that’s coming) for us this last year in the Big 12. Our goal is to win a conference championship in every sport that we participate in and win a national championship in every sport we participate. That’s always gonna be the goal here. It’s realistic at the University of Texas, but that’s our goal. We want to exit in a classy way at the same time to participate at the highest level. … We’ve still got 2023 to go – it’s like everyone forgot we have a year this year, I’m like, ‘that is next year. We need to focus right here across the board’ because every one of our coaches are just itching to get in the Southeastern Conference yet they all know the task at hand. We gotta go out with a bang. As I told (Texas football coach) Steve (Sarkisian) – last year of the Southwest Conference, we won; first year in the Big 12, we won. We want to go do it again. Come on, it’s been too long.” (link)

Colorado football head coach Sanders reflects on his run with Under Armour while at Jackson State: “Kevin Plank and Under Armour, man — we’ve been together longer than George and Weezie. Kevin Plank — I love this man so much for what he’s done for me, my youth programs…Even with going to Jackson and changing that whole dynamic of all the sports wearing UA stuff — and we could afford it. The multiple uniforms…I think we outdid Oregon when we was at Jackson State. We had several uniforms. I think — if we did wear the same combination twice — I don’t think we did in a whole season. We may wear the same top and bottom but not the same helmets.” On the switch to Nike now that he is with the Buffs, “Colorado is a Nike school, so Mr. Plank and I talked and we spoke business-wise as well as relationally-wise. I had to do what I had to do. I’m ecstatic and I’m excited about it.” (link)

Aflac has replaced Chick-fil-A as the title game sponsor of the annual college football Kickoff Game in Atlanta. The three-year deal between Peach Bowl Inc. and Aflac starts this season and includes four games, as there are two to open the 2025 season. United Athletic Conference has retained Highland Growth Strategies as its new marketing and media firm. SBJ’s Smith reports: “Highland will focus on two primary areas of revenue -- developing a media rights plan and a corporate sponsorship plan The UAC’s main assets will include a leaguewide presenting partnership that will be unique among D-I conferences. The ‘United Athletic Conference presented by Brand X’ will provide maximum value for the nine schools that begin play this season.” (link)

Attorneys for EA Sports and The Brandr Group have agreed to a joint stipulation, pushing back the deadline to August 1 for EA to respond to TBG’s complaint. Heitner Legal’s namesake believes it could mean a resolution is forthcoming: “Extensions of time are liberally granted by courts and counsel tends to not object particularly for a first request. It sometimes allows the parties time to negotiate a resolution early on as well, instead of wasting resources on fighting the case.” (link)

Meanwhile, South Carolina star Track & Field student-athlete Glenn, the 2021 NCAA High Jump champ, has transferred to Arkansas. Some interesting comments from Glenn on the move: “One of the reasons I was getting frustrated with the NIL collective at South Carolina was I kept asking and asking for help with NIL deals and brand deals, but they literally spent all their attention on basketball and football. So going on other visits and going to other schools, I’m noticing how their collective focuses on all sports, not just football and basketball. [...] There are some schools that do recruit with NIL. I’ve had some schools say they can’t promise me anything with NIL because it’s against the rules, but if you come here we can help you. And then there are the schools that straight up offer an NIL deal.” (link)

College Basketball Players Association co-Founder Hsu has filed an unfair labor complaint with the NLRB against Northwestern on behalf of the Football student-athletes following the investigation into hazing within the program. Hsu tells On3’s Prisbell: “From an NLRB perspective, it begs the question: If they were actually being treated as employees by Northwestern, would they have had better training? Would there have been better oversight over what was happening. Because it’s really sad that not only this happened once, but it appears to have been a systemic cultural issue … Almost all of it probably would not have happened. Someone would have cried foul because they would have been put through training and all this other stuff that they should have theoretically had.” More from Hsu on the complaint against USC, the Pac-12 and NCAA: “I think USC is going to lose, the Pac-12 is going to lose and the NCAA is going to lose. The question is, are they going to be able to delay the trial? … The defense knows what it is up against. Just like anything else with the NCAA – all the legal stuff – it’s kind of comical to watch because they’re just flailing. They don’t have any real arguments … They are hoping for Congress to step in. Right now, it doesn’t look like Congress is going to step in.” (link)

More from Inside NU on the “toxic” culture that Northwestern Baseball student-athletes assert was created by first-year HC Foster, who they contend was often absent from practice and didn’t bother getting to know them. Per one student-athlete, who is one of at least 16 to enter the transfer portal: “Unlike the situation with Fitz, you without a doubt will not be seeing any support for him being signed off on by our team, which speaks volumes.” Another source, on players who are rising seniors anxious to find a new home: “Those are kids that have put three years into this university, into the school, into the team, into this community and are willing to forego their Northwestern education so that they can play for a different head coach. That is something that we should be embarrassed by.” (link)
|
Per ESPN’s Rittenberg, six Northwestern faculty are requesting for the report into FB hazing to be revealed and put the $800M Ryan Field renovations on hold “until this crisis is satisfactorily resolved.” Rittenberg also reports: “Northwestern is retaining its assistant coaches and support staff for the 2023 season, the school tells ESPN. The coaches and staff were informed of their status in a meeting with athletic director Derrick Gragg earlier today.” (link, link)

Extra Points purveyor Brown pens on the happenings in Evanston: “Given everything that’s happened, I think a much deeper program autopsy is needed here. Are senior university leaders giving too much authority to a small handful of program boosters and donors? Does the athletic department have the culture and resources needed to provide meaningful checks on the excess of coaches? Who else, besides Schill, played a role here? […] Northwestern is a school that prides itself on being different….a school that unabashedly demands academic excellence, that wants to win on its terms, without compromising its values. Firing Fitzgerald alone won’t fix those problems. Without a deeper, uncomfortable look at how cultural problems are popping up in their athletic department, how senior university leaders are engaging with those problems, and what kind of role major donors play in this whole process…Northwestern won’t have wins or values.” (link)

Hawaii AD Angelos sits down with Spotlight Hawaii to discuss his first five weeks leading the Rainbow Warriors. On the facilities front, a facilities master plan is in progress. For Football, the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex will have a capacity of 15,300 for this season as the department continues to explore new revenue streams like premium seating. Angelos notes the addition of premium seating across all facilities could bring “upwards of $400K in new revenue,” with the new AD offering his own suite for sale to maximize revenue. As for the timeline on Aloha Stadium, the plan is to post an RFQ in December with proposals to be evaluated in the summer of 2025 and a full stadium ready for the 2028 FB season. Angelos also notes the possibility of converting Klum Gym into a sports performance center, adding a naming rights opportunity may be solidified soon. As for realignment, Angelos says no official conversations about moving all Rainbow Warriors sports to the Mountain West have happened, but “I did wonder in the back of my mind. If San Diego State leaves, are they going to want us to come in with our other sports perhaps to supplement the basketball scheduling and things of that nature.” As for the financial implications, Angelos asserts the travel subsidy paid to the Big West could be used to help fund travel further onto the mainland. + Georgia Deputy AD El Shahawy announces he will step away from the Bulldogs’ department: “It is often said that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life and that certainly applies to me as I truly relished working in intercollegiate athletics. I loved the daily interactions I was blessed to have with student-athletes, coaches, and staff throughout a majority of my career. In transparency the past 2 1/2 years have been the most challenging of my personal life by far and it certainly has impacted the energy level required to perform at my peak professionally. Quite frankly ‘Burnout’ is a very real thing and I found myself exhibiting all of the symptoms of burnout. The career I loved had all of a sudden become a job and I found myself leading from an empty tank. [...] For the first time since I was a senior in high school I will not be affiliated with a college football program this Fall. It will certainly be a strange feeling. I have to say I am excited for the future and planning to enjoy the break with my loved ones.”(link)
