The NCAA has found 175 infractions of its sports-betting policy since 2018, according to a letter President Baker sent this week in response to a query from Rep. Titus (D-NV). There are 17 active investigations, as well. Violations have ranged from $5 wagers to “providing inside information,” according to the letter. Baker: “I appreciate Congress' increased attention to the topic of sports betting. I agree with you that in addition to the opportunities it creates, sports betting brings risk that could undermine the integrity of competition.” (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Radnofsky & Higgins pen on the delay in the California state bill that could lead to student-athletes being compensated as the Women’s Sports Foundation submitted a letter in advance of further legislative advancement: “A best-case scenario of schools providing these payments equitably would likely result in an untenable financial situation which could lead to schools dramatically cutting their sports offerings or eliminating athletics altogether. [...] We agree that college sports are in need of reform, but we must create that change on a broad Federal level while keeping gender equity and existing federal laws top of mind.” More specifically, there were concerns around “a 50-50 payout split between male and female athletes might not be equitable or proportional in a student body that could be 60 percent female.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Forde reflects on comments yesterday from Big 12 Commissioner Yormark: “Yormark is the college sports shark that never stops swimming. And it’s up to his peers outside the towers of power in the SEC and Big Ten to swim with him. The Pac-12 has done plenty to disrupt itself in recent years, from the damaging commissioner tenure of Larry Scott to the loss of USC and UCLA to its ongoing and meandering media-rights saga. But don’t discount the role of Yormark as a sower of discord.” Forde goes on to note how Colorado & Arizona could still be Yormark’s crosshairs, plus the possibilities of Gonzaga & UConn, as well as even St. John’s & Syracuse to “actually deliver a decent slice of the New York City market—at least in one sport.” (link)

Penn State AD Kraft isn’t bashful about where he wants his Baseball program to go: “I fully expect to get to Omaha [for the College World Series]. Like that’s what we’re in this for. And we got to put the right things and the right pieces in place. And that goes back to health and wellness, the mental health we’ve added the sports performance people we’ve added the training table all of those things go to helping you win and being successful. And in whatever sport, baseball included. We can win at baseball.” New Nittany Lions HC Gambino goes on to say that Kraft has made a “huge investment” and “has a great strategy in place,” which was the reason he was willing to make a move from Boston College, “...we were in a great situation and a place that I loved [at Boston College] and our family loved it. This idea and this vision that Penn State can be in the College World Series is something that Pat believes in, that (Deputy AD for Internal Operations) Vinnie (James) believes in, that I believe in.” (link)

+ Interesting comment from NBC President of Acquisitions and Partnerships Miller on former Big Ten Commissioner Warren: “The additions of UCLA and USC changed the dynamic dramatically. Not only did it create a lot more premium inventory for the networks to choose from, but it also made the price considerably more expensive, which we all accepted and acknowledged. And he also, quite honestly, had to balance the issues with (multiple networks). That’s not an easy thing to navigate, and I think he did that pretty well.” (link)

Yesterday's Evening Standard...

Big 12 Commissioner Yormark kicked off Big 12 media day and, without ruffling as many feathers as last year, touched on expansion, the league’s new media rights deal and much more. On expansion: “We do have a plan, and hopefully we can execute that plan sooner than later. But as I've always said, I love the composition of this conference right now. The excitement the four new members have brought to this conference has been incredible, and if we stay at 12, we're perfectly fine with that. If the opportunity presents itself where there's something that creates value and aligns well with our goals and objectives, starting with the board, then we're certainly going to pursue it. […] as it relates to a school that's a non-Power Five, if they create value and they align well with our goals and objectives, it's a conversation we'll consider having.” Yormark notes the conference will explore the possibility of Thursday and Friday FB games as part of the new deal, adding: “But most importantly, just going early was critically important for this conference, giving us the stability and the clarity, and as we all know, there's some challenges in the media market today. […] When you think about the tonnage of college football on air on a Saturday, it provides a lot of opportunity for us to kind of build our profile on a Friday night. But there's a lot that goes into that decision. You're absolutely right. It's not just about visibility, it's all about the fans and what's right for our schools and their campuses.” Yormark also says the conference is nearing a data rights deal, stating: “Well, first of all, I'll say it's more traditional, but we're working with our selected partner on how broad we can go. I do think controlling how our data is disseminated and gathered is critically important with our overall strategy. There are data collectors that are unofficially in our venues right now collecting data and selling it to third parties, and that's happening all over the country. Our data deal will afford us an opportunity to control that, and that's what we're pursuing.” Lots more. (link)

Former Big Ten boss Delany sits for a Q&A with The Athletic’s Dochterman, in which the commish gives his take on expansion in the late-20th and early-21st centuries. Delany thinks the Notre Dame and Florida State dominos don’t fall if the Big East accepts Penn State in the early 80s: “I’m saying none of that happens if the Big East expands properly to eight football schools and 12 basketball schools. But their rationale was, that’s too many schools. Eight and 12. Isn’t that kind of quaint?” That being said, Delany proffers that “there’s a point at which an association of colleges is no longer a conference, and my guess is it’s at 16.” Delany also differentiates between the ACC’s “reactionary” addition of FSU to the Nittany Lions joining the Big Ten, and the SEC adding Arkansas and South Carolina, which he views as “strategic” as part of a marketing play to create a championship game. Lots more. (link)

Vanderbilt AD Lee, to The Tennessean’s Gerson, on her recent contract extension and working relationship with Chancellor Diermeier: “He made it clear from the beginning that he always says he wants there to be no daylight between us and he has supported me and allowed me to do the job that I feel like has been necessary to get Vanderbilt athletics where, at least on track headed towards where I believe we all want us to go. I think that this extension is consistent with what I've seen from day one, which is tremendous support and belief in the vision for what Vanderbilt athletics can be.” (link)

The Athletic’s Sampson dives into the “symbiosis” between Notre Dame FB and NBC, as the current rights deal is set to expire in 2025 and industry analysts see $60M as a target number. Lots from Irish AD Swarbrick, who says NBC’s acquisition of Big Ten rights was “an important sign of their commitment to college football.” Swarbrick also weighs in on D2C, opining: “The dynamic that we all see is that’s where this is headed. ESPN is talking about taking the entire ESPN direct to consumer. I don’t know whether Peacock will be NBC in five years. It may be.” And while continuing a 30-year relationship appears to make sense on a multitude of levels, Swarbrick does say: “When I use the phrase ‘committed media partner,’ I was always intending to communicate financially too. It’s the promotion of us. It’s the positioning of us on Saturday. And it’s the money.” (link)

"We don't intend to go into the American conference and finish dead last. Everybody can be dead last, we want to be number one and be competitive from the very beginning." That’s UAB AD Ingram as the Blazers join the AAC, who adds about the conference’s ESPN media rights deal: “The platform is just incredibly different and the exposure is just 100 times greater than what we had before.” On new FB HC Dilfer, Ingram says Dilfer has told him he is not in the business to climb to the next opportunity, adding: “He says, ‘Listen if we’re not good, I’ll quit. I’m not going to be that guy you gotta push out.’ He’s like ‘Yeah, I’m not gonna have it. We’re going to be great or I’m not going to be here and you won’t have to be the one that does it.’ And I respect that and I also respect the fact that he’s not afraid to say some challenging things.” On criticisms over his potential ability to recruit, Ingram points to his experience with Elite 11, noting: “Can you imagine how many coaches in this country have sent their quarterbacks to his camp or tried to? And when you think about the connectivity there and the number of people he must know there, which he acknowledged and confirmed, it’s maybe bigger than anybody we could have hired.” (link)

Western Illinois AD Bubb sits down with WRAM to discuss the move to the OVC, sport expansion and more. The travel impact of moving from the Summit League to the OVC will give WIU five members within five hours of Macomb as opposed to one in the Summit League. The trio of new women’s sports coming to Macomb – Beach Volleyball, Bowling and STUNT – may be pushed back to kick off in the 2025-26 season. (link)

Ohio State Assoc. AD for Compliance Kume chats with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker about the latest compliance challenges, NIL trends, the impact of the expanded College FB Playoff and more. On the latter, Kume lays out the need to begin conversations now about how FB student-athletes are being certified with a tournament that will take place in the fall and spring semesters, noting how academic calendars, semester versus quarter schedules and more could create a competitive imbalance. Further, Kume questions how this will impact spring football and what legislation needs to be created to allow for flexibility should teams compete deep into the playoffs. With the changes around triggering student-athlete status, Kume says he’s seen incoming student-athletes try to graduate earlier to get into earlier summer classes to trigger that status and allow them to begin having “tangible conversations about name, image likeness.” More only on Connect. Added funds will be used to replace the turf at Pape’ Field, construct “The Jake” golf facility with $1.7M in donations, and future pledges. Cross: “The continued prioritization of women’s sports, supported by entities such as Women in Flight and similar programs throughout the nation, will generate greater resources that provide long-term support and stability.
