CollegeAD reports Old Dominion AD Selig had his contract extended through early June of 2028 with increased yearly base pay to $385K & supplemental comp of $165K annually. Competitive, academic & compliance bonus opportunities range from $10K to $25K per occurrence. ODU can dismiss Selig without cause by providing a one-year notice, which would include Selig being owed all base salary over the term. If Selig chooses to exit for another DI big chair, he must give 30 days, plus scheduled home & home contests for football (within six years), men’s basketball & women’s basketball (both within two years). Connect/MB Sports’ Banker visits with Drake AD Hardin at the 2023 NACDA Convention. The duo touches on a number of topics including the banner year in athletics, the effort to get people to campus to introduce them to Drake, whether it be for multi-use of current Bulldogs facilities, or with the goal in mind of cultivating future Drake students. Hardin: “As a tuition driven institution, anything that we can do to drive people onto our campus to see what we have at Drake can only help us.” Hardin says the 390 student-athletes from 29 states and 26 countries are the most diverse set of students on campus and acknowledges athletics is a part of the bigger enrollment picture. USA Today’s Toppmeyer takes former Tennessee AD Fulmer to task for his role in the NCAA penalties & fines handed down to the Volunteers yesterday: “Fulmer deserves an Oscar for his performance as a witless athletics director. He either feigned or truly maintained a cluelessness to the cheating occurring under his nose, while he otherwise focused on offensive line performance and weightlifting data. Although the NCAA and UT never implicated Fulmer, the investigation’s findings nonetheless smear the legacy of one of Tennessee athletics’ longtime pillars.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Forde also reviews the situation in Knoxville: “The current NCAA penalty structure requires—not recommends, it requires—a postseason ban in this instance. Yet the COI deviated from established guidelines to avoid it. This is a sign of the times, which have changed even within the past five months. [...] A $9 million hit is significant, even in the revenue-rich SEC. It is ‘exponentially larger’ than the biggest fine the NCAA had previously administered. But make no mistake, Tennessee would much rather fork over seven figures than not be able to play in the postseason the next two years—especially with an expanded, 12-team Playoff looming in 2024. [...] In reality, I suspect the last postseason ban has been given in big-time college sports. Luckless Oklahoma State got it, and has watched every sinner of the past three years skate away with something less.” (link)

Valparaiso AD Small and Lindenwood AD Coomer join AthleticDirectorU’s Brown at the 2023 NACDA Convention to reflect on Year One in the Big Chair. Small and Coomer, both first-time ADs, share insight into navigating expected and unexpected challenges, establishing key relationships on campus – including with the president’s senior leadership team – and adapting to new expectations as the department-wide leader. Small shares his leadership mantras of “build, measure, learn” and “stewardship, strategy and success” while Coomer quotes retired U.S. Army General Dempsey regarding change, saying: “If you don’t like change, you’re going to hate being irrelevant even more.” Full convo. Sports Illustrated’s Forde expects embattled former Northwestern FB HC Fitzgerald to be back on the sidelines, provided he takes accountability in a way his mentor, former NU and Colorado HC Barnett, did not: “Unless there is more damaging information forthcoming, it’s easy to see Fitzgerald getting what Barnett did not get—a second chance after a scandal. [...] Fitzgerald, just 48 years old, likely will have another job within the next six months if he wants it. [...] Fitzgerald will have to convince a school president—and the families of recruits—he’s not a guy who tolerates player hazing or requires Black players to cut their hair to a certain length, but his 110 wins at a prestigious academic school will carry the day. In an era of accelerated coach hirings and firings, don’t be shocked if some embattled athletic director deploys a ‘Fire for Fitz’ strategy come September.” (link)

Crakes Media’s namesake tweets more on the ACC-CW deal, along with what it could mean for Pac-12 rights: “So, almost assured that Tier 3 package of ACC content saw its rights fee eliminated or severely reduced in move to CW. Given Pac-12 needs at least some rights fees CW is right out unless for similar small package. Meanwhile, curious where ion gets economics to counter anything… Raycom took whatever hit here but point is package went from rights fee based to mostly ad sales barter/rev share probably. And that was only viable option for Raycom as without distribution embargo clause in sub-license would force a revert back to ESPN most likely.” (link, link)

More from Disney as some executives are skeptical the company can make Disney+ profitable by September 2024, pointing to slowing subscriber growth and spending on content that totaled $32B last year. The search for CEO Iger’s successor has already begun with Nike Executive Chairman Parker, who chairs the Disney board, leading the search committee and Heidrick & Struggles assisting to find external candidates. Internally, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment and Studio Business Walden and Bergman and Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Product D’Amaro are being “strongly considered.” (link)

WNBA Review…
+ Similar to college athletics (pre-NIL), WNBA organizations are leveraging investments in facilities to aid in the recruitment of top free agents. ESPN’s Pelton: “In a league with a hard salary cap of just $1.42 million per team and restrictions on the use of charter travel, practice facilities are an opportunity for teams to distinguish themselves and compete for free agents. With Las Vegas and Seattle joining in the WNBA teams who share ownership with NBA counterparts in having gleaming, spacious facilities to call home, the rest of the league risks getting left behind.” Pelton gets this from Los Angeles Sparks GM/Chief Administrative Officer Bryant: “It's a critical factor in players' decisions. It came up in just about every conversation with every free agent we had. ... I think as we go forward it will be the differentiator.” (link)
+ A slew of ESPN writers chime in on the pros and cons of each WNBA team’s current practice facility setup. The Minnesota Lynx use The Courts at Mayo Clinic Square and this is the only spot on the list without any cons, according to Voepel. The rest are either inconvenient, shared spaces, or not permanent homes. (link)
+ Midway through the season, attendance is up 27% thus far, on pace to be the highest average attendance since 2018. The league says partnership revenue has grown by double-digits (an all-time high) and merchandise sales at partner Dick’s Sporting Goods are up 68% YOY. (link)

ASU President Fedrick: "Dr. Kelly presents notable expertise, vision, and passion for athletics and student success which makes her an excellent fit for the university. The Committee on Infractions found over 200 infractions during a three-year football stretch at Tennessee including 18 Level I violations that resulted in around $60K in impermissible inducements and benefits to current and prospective student-athletes. Those impermissible benefits included over $17K in cash from former HC Pruitt or his wife to prospects that enrolled at UT, over $12K in inducements and visit expenses during the COVID dead period and more. Penalties include over $9M in fines – $8M to equate to the financial impact of a 2023 and 2024 postseason ban and the prescribed legislated fine of 3% of the FB budget, five years probation, a reduction of 28 scholarships, six-year show-cause for Pruitt, multi-year show-cause penalties for seven other staffers, the disassociation with a booster indefinitely and more. The panel stating: “The failure at Tennessee was cultural. It was a failure of all stakeholders to embrace the shared responsibility of monitoring and compliance and to create a culture where those responsibilities were prioritized and rewarded. This cannot simply be the responsibility of the compliance staff. […] Tennessee's cooperation throughout the investigation and processing of this case was exemplary by any measure. Although this case involved egregious conduct, (Tennessee's) response to that conduct is the model all institutions should strive to follow. […] The panel urges the Infractions Process Committee and the membership to clearly define its philosophy regarding penalties — which extends beyond postseason bans — and memorialize that philosophy in an updated set of penalty guidelines.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Castiglione raps about NIL with On3’s Prisbell. The Sooners’ boss emphasizes the need for student-athletes to have a seat at the table: “We need to embrace what we think the best solution is for the role of how we involve athletes in the future. We need to help figure that out with them and for them.” Castiglione also wants to see athletic departments allowed more involvement, as he says NIL is “one of the – not the only – but one of the only strategies that has some level of sustainability to it. There could be rules around it, guardrails. There could be very bright lines. We can figure all that out. But I just don’t see any other way in the long run.” (link)

The Athletic’s Dochterman posts more of his realignment Q&A with former Big Ten Commissioner Delany, who cautions the SEC and his former league about having eyes bigger than their stomachs, lest they invite government intervention: “If I look at the SEC, I see that they should have pretty much everything that they need. I think the Big Ten probably has everything they need. I think the others may be threatened. But I would say if somebody goes beyond 16, whether it’s the Big Ten or SEC, they’ve got to ask them the question about size and scale and market power. The NCAA was found to have had market power in 1984, and their hold on college sports TV was ruled to be excessive. I don’t know where that point is. Conferences became the natural inheritors of the marketing of the TV rights. [...] The question is what crosses the line beyond 16 because at a certain point, you’re gonna have more people in your group than you can even play. I would hope there would be a healthy Pac-12 and a healthy ACC. I’m really happy that there’s a healthy Big East in basketball. I hope there’s a healthy MAC. Everybody doesn’t have to live in a gated community.” Plenty more, including Delany’s thoughts on cable-, brand- and market-based plays made during his tenure. (link)

The DI Women’s Basketball Committee discussed tournament expansion at its summer meeting, but no movement is imminent. Committee chair and Pac-12 Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Sports Management Petersen, looking ahead: “While we are pleased women's basketball continues to grow and the accomplishments of the past season and championship, it's imperative for the committee and all women's basketball stakeholders to be diligent going forward. We will not rest on the successes we have experienced with the past championship and Women's Final Four. We have spent considerable time leading up to and during the meeting this week reviewing everything that touches the championship and looking for ways to continue growing and improving to make it better for our student-athletes, fans and partners.” Arkansas Asst. Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer, Deputy AD for Student-Athlete Wellness and SWA Dawkins was elected to serve as chair of the committee in 2024-25. (link)

The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee is recommending conferences explore “expanding bat testing to each game day” ahead of the 2024 season. This will remain a suggestion as this is not a year for rule changes in baseball. Chapman (DIII) Assoc. AD for Compliance/Committee Chair: “The discussion we had centered on the integrity of the sport. We want to emphasize that conferences look at what is best when it comes to bat testing, and that it can be done more frequently than what is currently required.” (link)

North Dakota will spend $960K annually as part of its Alston Award program, the 701 Award. Funds will be evenly distributed between men’s and women’s programs with each program getting a specific dollar amount and coaches having discretion in how they dole it out. In the short term, roughly half the funding will come from athletics and the other half from the university. Coaches talk about the impact on recruiting and donors, while AD Chaves explains: “We feel we've made a thoughtful decision for us. I think we're there as far as being on the front end of this, but I've gotten to the point where I worry more about what's right for us (than about what other schools are doing). We feel it's the right thing for UND.” (link)

New Mexico AD Nuñez joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss the new New Mexico Mutual Champions Training Center, hiring coaches, the changing national landscape and more. The 11K+ square-foot facility now gives all UNM student-athletes two state-of-the-art facilities right next to each other. Nuñez credits the university leadership for seeing his vision for facilities very early in his tenure as there were originally plans for a much simpler project. Having just hired a new Cross Country/Track & Field HC and Lobos HCs earning 11 conference coach of the year awards during his tenure, Nuñez keys on character, integrity, having a winning edge, values, adding: “The only limit that we have is the limit that we put on ourselves. For me, that's something that I tell our coaches, don't limit your vision, don't limit the opportunities here. If you can't see it, then maybe this isn't the place for you because for me, I don't care where I am. I want to compete at the highest level.” More only on Connect. (link)

SBJ’s Ourand gets feedback from media executives on who could step in as a strategic partner for ESPN, noting the most popular answer was private equity. Ourand: “By going the private equity route, Iger would have cover to manage the business more aggressively and move more quickly into sports gaming and streaming. This would let Iger take ESPN’s financials — which are likely to be hampered by the continued shrinking of the cable bundle — off Disney’s balance sheet, while also allowing him to keep his hand in the sports business.” Sources were divided on the possibility of a sports gambling entity and pessimistic about the prospects of another digital company or Fanatics entering the fray, with the former being Disney’s direct competition. La Salle Chief of Staff/SWA Smith and TCU Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Johnson join AthleticDirectorU’s Brown to discuss “Lessons in Effective Leadership.” Looking back on their own experiences, both point to transparency and giving people the confidence to be successful as some of the most effective aspects of leadership they’ve seen. Expanding on the latter, Johnson details the importance of doing the small things with staff: “Just popping in, saying hello, doing those small things to try to garner their trust, that I see them working and then commend them for what they do well, that allows me to say to them when they are doing something very well, you can do more. I want you to do this and they’ll say, ‘Okay, if you think I can do it, I think I can do it.’ But it also lets them take feedback about where they can improve too because they know I really have their best interest at heart.” More including how they implement strategic thinking for their departments and impart that on coaches. College Sports Communicators Executive Director Christianson and CSC President/Big East Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Sports Media Relations Paquette sit down with FOX Sports’ Fischer at the 2023 CSC Convention to dive into the vision and direction for the group, industry changes and lots more. Moving into the new academic year, membership for the association has increased to over 4,100 in the last year, and continues to expand among creatives, and CSC will work to reimagine the academic all-american program. With expanding responsibilities and squeezed resources, Christianson on value for members: “It all comes back to your values and your priorities, so what we do then in our space is we advocate for our members, we advocate for the profession, but not just that, we also provide them the tools so that they can do their jobs, be effective, become people of influence on their campuses. They are the subject matter experts when it comes to communications on campus and I believe more and more leaders, ADs, commissioners and others know that when when there are big issues that need to be managed, whether they're you know proactive or reactive, that they need to have their communication staff as part of that process. The ultimate outcome is better when that happens and that's what we're really focused on.” Check out the full convo only on Connect. (link)
