Santa Clara AD Baumgartner caught up with AthleticDirectorU’s Brown at last month’s NACDA Convention to talk about cultivating curiosity, reflections on culture & more. Baumgartner on being a part of the Competition Oversight Committee: “We put together a white board of what was important and wheeled it into the Council and I think we got everyone’s attention that we need to invest more resources in championships. Expand brackets. Beach Volleyball is one that has grown. [...] Being able to seed maybe not just 25%, but 50% or 75%. So you’re not seeded by your region by geography, but being seeded in the proper national slot is important if you’re trying to win a national championship.” Lots more. (link)

Intraconference relationships were tested when news first broke of Oklahoma and Texas leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, but Sooners AD Castiglione says, “It’s been getting better progressively as time has gone on.” During last week’s media days, Big 12 Commissioner Yormark referred to the upcoming year as one of celebration for the league: “We're going to celebrate our continuing eight. We're going to celebrate our new four. And in fact, we're going to celebrate Texas and Oklahoma and all the contributions they've made to this conference since day one because they'll always be a big part of this conference.” Yormark, in reference to negotiations last year with both schools regarding their exit process, “When there’s mutual respect and when you’re looking for a win-win scenario, those negotiations don’t really take that long. We all wanted the same thing, and we got there. I’m happy for them. I’m happy for us.” (link)

“Tennessee law prohibits the NCAA from imposing such a sanction (as a postseason ban), and I will not hesitate to vindicate the rights of UT students to enjoy the full measure of their intercollegiate athletic opportunities. NCAA rules cannot supersede Tennessee law.” That was Tennessee Attorney General Skrmetti in a letter to the NCAA back in March promising a legal battle if Tennessee was given a postseason ban as part of the recent penalties for football’s improprieties. More from the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Sparks: “Skrmetti, a conservative, has built a reputation for fighting against the federal government. It made him a popular pick among Republican lawmakers in Tennessee, the only state where the attorney general is appointed by the Supreme Court. Substitute the NCAA for the federal government, and it fits the pattern of Skrmetti’s past positions.” (link)

Troy AD Jones chatted with SBJ’s Nethery during the 2023 NACDA Convention in Orlando last month. Jones points to the additional duties thrust on athletic directors today, such as NIL, transfer portals, etc, and the added workload as the overarching theme that keeps him up at night. Jones: “The current mix of NIL patchwork, transfer portal movement and maintaining the integrity of amateurism is not going to work in the long run. … There needs to be some clear mandate moving forward, so that whether you’re in Alaska, Maine, California or Florida and everywhere else in between, that you’re following the same rules.” Jones goes on to emphasize the need to maintain amateurism and promotes the school’s NIL Education course that all student-athletes will take. Lots more. (link)

Sporting News headliner Trocchi asks why no other Northwestern football coaches have been disciplined in connection to the hazing investigation in Evanston: “The entire staff of assistants, several of whom have worked at Northwestern for at least five years, will all keep their jobs and no punishments have been announced. There have been no punishments announced for the 17 members of the Northwestern football support staff listed on the Northwestern athletics website. [...] The players who participated in the hazing, which according to Schill was confirmed by 11 players, have not been identified, suspended or expelled. [...] So why has only one person been punished?” (link)

Former Utah State football student-athlete Maddox, who, according to the Salt Lake Tribune’s Tanner: “blew the whistle with his damning footage of the teams’ head coach and the campus police chief smearing sex assault victims,” will get $150K from the school in a settlement. Maddox said once his teammates and the staff discovered he was the one who released the audio, he faced retaliation so intenses he felt forced to quit the team. With the settlement of his lawsuit, he is ready to move on and “put this chapter behind me.” (link)

Late Dartmouth donor Keeler set restrictions on his 2002 gift, now valued at $3.8M, that the money was to be used for the “sole purpose” of maintaining the school’s golf course. The Hanover Country Club course, however, was closed in 2020. The state Supreme Court unanimously ruled last week, however, that the school can shift the money to “golf-related” purposes, such as the “study and design of golf practice areas or golf team expenses.” According to the New Hampshire Bulletin: “Keeler had included a second restriction in his will that if Dartmouth opted not to use the money to maintain the course, it return any unspent money to the Robert T. Keeler Foundation, a nonprofit that supports children in need. It’s unclear if this is the last legal challenge the Keeler estate will mount against Dartmouth.” (link)

LSU star women’s basketball student-athlete Reese announces her new foundation, the the Angel C. Reese Foundation, “which will focus on empowering women through sports, education and financial literacy.” From On3’s Nakos: “Reese’s foundation will, ‘aim to foster equity for girls and underrepresented groups through innovative and impactful initiatives, develop practical solutions to overcome systemic challenges and provide comprehensive resources that empower a new generation of girls to excel in sports and successfully transition to the real world.’” (link)

The Duke men’s basketball program will offer fans the chance to see the 2023-24 squad in action for the first time together and “enjoy other exclusive events with current and former Blue Devils” with the 312 Run event in Chicago at the end of this month. The event has been “organized and coordinated by the current players,” who will share in the proceeds. Admission includes a court-side seat, an on-court photo experience, a meet-and-greet with the student-athletes and a private dinner with the team and Chicago-native/Head Coach Scheyer, along with former players and other friends of the program. Mountain West CEOs - minus San Diego State President de la Torre - will meet tomorrow to decide how to proceed with the Aztecs, per the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Zeigler. Interestingly, after releasing the first four letters between the institution & the league, SDSU has denied open record requests for three subsequent letters “citing exemptions.” Zeigler goes on to outline a handful of potential outcomes with the most likely: “The Mountain West agrees that SDSU did not provide formal notice of departure or, if it did, rescinded it before the June 30 deadline (after which the $17 million exit fee would double). SDSU gets its $6.6 million check for 2022-23, and the two sides link arms, sing each other’s praises and move on. It effectively would bind SDSU to the Mountain West for two more years, since Athletic Director John David Wicker has repeatedly said the university cannot afford to pay the doubled exit fee for leaving with less than one year’s notice. Instead of joining the Pac-12 in the 2024-25 academic year, assuming they get an invitation, the Aztecs would give one-year notice of resignation by June 30, 2024, remain in the Mountain West for 2024-25 and leave in 2025-26.” (link)

Boise State AD Dickey on the Broncos future conference potential: “What I will tell you is there is still a lot of politicking going on and don’t believe everything you read. I know what we represent. I know what our brand is. And I know who we are. The people who need to know that, know it. And, you know, there’s only so much we can control in this process. Our viewership numbers are top in the conference. Our success is top in the conference. Our brand is top in the conference. Now, whether or not that’s important to X, Y or Z conference, that is not for me to determine. … I’m not going to apologize for who we are. I’m proud of who we are. I’m proud of where we’ve come from. … To be the big fish in the small pond? I’m not trying to sugarcoat it, but absolutely (there’s a positive to that). I see opportunity in everything. I look at what we’re doing, what we represent, our consistency over the course of time and currently how we’re reinvesting in building up our programs to a much-higher level. Do I see opportunity in that? 1000%. … We are preparing for that success when it happens.” (link)

A quartet of Chicago Tribune journalists write on what the last week means for Northwestern long term. Faculty Senate President Rodgers: “I’d like to think this will not hurt our academics reputation. But it’s concerning. The question it could raise in prospective students’ parents’ minds is, does this university respond adequately to concerns or allegations that impact the safety of my child, not just the athletic students, but all students?” Public relations & crisis management expert Sitrick tells the Tribune it would be beneficial if NU President Schill would explain in detail why he changed his mind on disciplinary measures for former Football HC Fitzgerald. More from Rodgers: “We need to work on getting the athletics department closer in alignment, and not just at the highest level.” (link)

The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Sparks provides more insight on the state of affairs at Tennessee under former AD Fulmer at the time of Football’s improprieties that were penalized late last week by the NCAA. In a drafted email from Fulmer to UT Chancellor Plowman: “I am not (at) all advocating a change in football and hope we do not get there with pending issues. I do believe we can overcome our challenges, and I have seen signs of progress. Jeremy knows the rules and will ask if something comes up. I have made it clear we will not cheat.” Also: “Compliance communication … (is) improved because of Jeremey’s [sic] insistence and our staff follow up. So yes … he has ruffled lots of feathers to get support groups where he wants them.” (link)

Kentucky Senator Paul recently made comments about NIL: “Many of us loved watching amateur athletes that weren’t paid,” Paul said. “Now everybody that plays basketball in college is gonna be driving a Bentley or a Rolls [Royce]. I mean, we’re gonna be seeing rap stars instead of basketball stars. I mean, this is crazy!” ESPN analyst Bilas took exception to Paul’s statement: “To be kind, it was racial undertones. It was overtones. And it was a pretty clear dog whistle. So I didn’t care for it. I’m surprised he hasn’t been called out on it more to date, just like Tommy Tuberville was with the ridiculous things he said recently.” (link)

More from Crakes Media’s namesake on the CW-Raycom deal for ACC football & hoops game inventory: “Overall, this is the best solution available. [...] Biggest challenge with games on CW is getting clearance across networks. There will be some holes & need for alternate stations. [...] In end, it’s equivalent to RSN distribution with upside.” (link)

D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle caught up with FIU AD Carr at the NACDA Convention in Orlando last month. He says culture is something he works on every day, touches on the recent launch of their strategic plan and how that process unfolded and says the hiring of a full-time student-athlete development staffer is forthcoming. Transfer portal and NIL are the hottest topics for Carr, who notes “If we’re being honest, if we have someone who is first team all-conference in… you pick the sport… there is a good chance we’re not going to be able to keep them for the next year. They’re going to end up in the transfer portal and going somewhere else. That’s one that is keeping me up at night.” (link)

Texas Men’s Basketball HC Terry says there was “no thought” on a daily basis about him getting the then-interim tag dropped from his title last season. “I think between me and my staff, I think the thing we were committed to was trying to enjoy the journey with this group. We had a really good group going that we enjoyed being around every single day. Whether it was on the court, in the film room, individually meeting with guys. We just loved being around those guys and that group. I think we got lost in that and trying to put those guys in the best position to be successful.” (link)
