Big Chair Developments…
+ CollegeAD reports Long Beach State is hosting AD finalists on campus next week. Also, Rice is holding virtual interviews this week before two to three candidates visit Houston next week & expectations of a new leader being in place by August 1st. (link)
+ D1.dossiers for both openings are available for those squarely in the mix. William & Mary AD Mann: “It allowed me to focus on prep work, and not the research needed to pull it together. Worth every penny!” (link)
+ Stephen F. Austin AD Ivey will serve as President of the FCS ADA next year with Albany AD Benson, UT Martin AD McGuffin & Lafayette AD Freeman as first, second & third VPs, respectively. Full rundown of Executive Committee members can also be found in the release. (link)

Kent State AD Richmond, Akron AD Guthrie and Cleveland State AD Garrett sound off on some of the issues facing their respective institutions, and Richmond tells Crain’s Cleveland that by expanding the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, it's “not the Kent States and the Mid-American Conference schools that get in, it's probably some of those other (Power Five) schools. I'm not sure that's the answer." Guthrie talks about the impact on conference consolidation: "I'm hoping common sense takes over in college athletics. Even if we go to a pro model, the New York Yankees aren't always going all the way out to L.A. to play the Dodgers. The New York Mets play a regional schedule in their backyard, which keeps their players healthy, keeps travel light, preserves careers and allows their families to actually go to an away game without having to travel 3,000 miles." Garrett shares his thoughts on NIL: "The mid-majors and lower-visibility Division I schools have a little bit of a longer runway to figure things out. It's not affecting us as rapidly from a competitive standpoint, but we also need to make sure we're competitive amongst our peers. We're not an Ohio State or Cincinnati, but we need to pay attention to what's happening at schools like Toledo, Bowling Green and Miami (OH)." (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker covers several sports gambling topics with NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement Development Hicks and Director of Academic and Membership Affairs Vaughn, including the recently updated Student-Athlete Reinstatement Guidelines for cases involving sports wagering, the number of officials screened by the NCAA last year, relationships the NCAA is fostering to stay plugged into the latest developments and lots more. Vaughn says updates to the reinstatement guidelines were made based on an acknowledgement of the nuance surrounding the issue. “In the previous guidelines it was this category that if any wagering occurred through the Internet, basically there was one penalty for that, and the starting point was sit a season, charge a season. … We’ve just seen unprecedented proliferation of sports wagering activities since some of these state laws have been modernized, and [all or nearly all] of that activity occurs through the Internet, through a mobile app, and it’s not the type of activity that it used to be. Now we see things like FanDuel and DraftKings and the others, so the committee really tried to introduce some new guidelines to give us a little bit more tools with wrestling with some of these cases.” Lots more in the full interview, only on Connect. The Athletic’s Auerbach lays out five potential scenarios for the future of conference realignment for 2033 and beyond, starting with the possibility of a so-called Big Three. “If nothing significant in the landscape changes and no major new revenue streams pop up, the ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 will continue to battle for No. 3 billing. Whoever emerges from that battle could become the landing spot for every attractive school the SEC and Big Ten pass on.” Former Big Ten Commissioner Delany wonders, however, what consequences could arise by any one conference expanding beyond 16 teams. “Once a conference maybe moves beyond the 16 (members), I’m not sure it’s not closer to a sports organization that has market power and therefore runs into some of the same challenges that the NCAA or two conferences acting together might run into from the standpoint” of the federal government. “At 16, we have examples. We had the old WAC. We have the SEC. We have the Big Ten. I think, beyond that, people better do a lot of research about what that means from the standpoint of exercising market power.” More. (link)

Northwestern Compensation…
+ USA Today’s Berkowitz reports former Northwestern Football HC Fitzgerald was credited with just over $5.9M in total compensation for 2021 calendar year, per the school's new federal tax return. That figure includes $4.96M in base pay (up from $4.67M in 2020), $375K in bonus pay, and $526K in other reportable compensation. (link)
+ Berkowitz also says former Wildcats AD Polisky received $476,190 in "separation or retirement" pay in 2021 and was credited with a total of $848,970 in total compensation. (link)
+ Former Northwestern AD/current ACC Commissioner Phillips was credited with nearly $1.1M in total pay for 2021. That total includes $155K in base pay, $412,500 in bonus pay and $300K in "separation or retirement" pay. (link)
+ Wildcats Men’s Basketball HC Collins earned just over $3.1M in total pay for 2021, nearly all of which was base salary. (link)
+ Berkowitz continues: “Northwestern AD Gragg, who was named to job in June 2021, credited with just under $595K in total pay for partial calendar year in Evanston. … Gragg also got $1M loan from the school; loan had $800K balance due as of 8/31/2022.” (link)

Months after Texas A&M announced the launch of the 12th Man+ Fund, details remain scarce and the fund has yet to publicly announce any NIL deals, On3’s Wittry reports. Asked about the initiative during SEC Media Days, Aggies Football HC Fisher responded: “I don’t know. That was not in my repertoire. That’s for the athletic director, the lawyers and everybody else to sort through and do what they got to do. I mean, that was what they did or come up with and whatever that is we’ll navigate and work on based off the right laws in which we have. So, I don’t know that answer. I’m just navigating by the rules they give me. I ask compliance every day and we go from there.” (link)

LSU Football HC Kelly discusses the potential uses for Artificial Intelligence in college football, particularly for building recruiting profiles. “We spend a lot of time on profiles, recruiting profiles and the intangibles or the traits that we’re looking for for particular players. I think AI has an opportunity, maybe, to create that kind of model for us relative to who is that kind of player out there all over the country, without making a mistake. So I think that there’s going to be room for it, and I think it’s exciting and something that we’re about to venture into.” (link)

UTSA Football HC Traylor remarked during the Texas High School Coaches Association convention that he has no problems confronting coaches who try to recruit his student-athletes into the portal. "I'm not just going to roll over and let them have my kids. I'm going to say, 'Hey Sam, my kid came in here and screen-shotted you hitting him up. He's on my roster right now. What are you doing, Sam?’ And usually Sam's going to say, 'Your kid came and told you?' 'Yeah, I've got the screen shot, Sam, right here.' That squashed seven of the eight. The one, he did what he had to do. I'm still close to that one, too, I love the kid. I think he'll hit me back in six months and say, 'You know what? I miss you, coach. I might've made a bad decision. I hope not. We'll see." (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Bethune-Cookman taps Claflin (DII) Track & Field/Cross Country HC Jackson for its Director of Track & Field/Cross Country post. (link)
+ Arizona Men’s Tennis HC Shields agrees to a contract extension that could keep him with the Wildcats through 2028. (link)
+ According to Law360, former Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball HC Joseph “asked the Eleventh Circuit to revive a suit she filed against the board of regents and athletic association claiming the school fired her after she repeatedly lodged complaints about the unequal treatment of the women’s basketball program.” (link)

The embezzlement trial for former New Mexico AD Krebs began yesterday with his attorneys arguing he committed no crimes because he gained no financial benefit following the golfing trip to Scotland that came into question. Defense attorney Kennedy: “You will hear no evidence in this case that Paul Krebs cheated anyone, deceived anyone, intended to deceive or cheat anyone, or took any money. You will see no paper trail of money going to Paul Krebs. Not one penny, not one dime went to Mr. Krebs.” Assistant Attorney General Coffing, however, told jurors that, in an effort to fill vacant spots on a trip that had been previously scheduled to include former Lobo/Chicago Bears LB Urlacher, Krebs directed his staff to waive the $8,100 cost of the “ground package” if they could pay their own airfare to Scotland. “This is strictly against the rules the university sets out in how their public funds are managed. By using the university’s funds in this way, with the intent to deprive the university of this money, he was not only breaking the rules, but he was breaking the law.” (link)

On3’s Staples shares his perspective on the ongoing conflict between Georgia and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution regarding its reporting of allegations against football student-athletes. “You come out with a very different impression of what happened based on reading the police report than you do based on reading that story. … I go back to the Jameis Winston case. I covered that for SI, and before they released the police reports and the investigative reports…there wasn't really a complete picture of what happened and that bothered me a lot writing about that stuff because it felt like you didn't have the whole picture. … We don't usually go at other reporters very often, but in this particular case I read the police report and thought how in the world did you read that and those are all the details you chose?” More from Staples and On3’s Simonton. U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen says that in the US, “growth has slowed, but our labor market continues to be quite strong — I don’t expect a recession. Yellen notes the economy is on a “good path” to bring inflation down without a major weakening in the labor market. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs says the odds of a recession in the next 12 months have fallen to 20% from 25%. (link, link)

Americans’ confidence in higher education has fallen to 36%, sharply lower than in two prior readings in 2015 (57%) and 2018 (48%), according to Gallup. In addition to the 17% of U.S. adults who have “a great deal” and 19% who express “quite a lot” of confidence, 40% have “some” and 22% “very little” confidence. From Gallup: “There is a growing divide between Republicans’ and Democrats’ confidence in higher education. Previous Gallup polling found that Democrats expressed concern about the costs, while Republicans registered concern about politics in higher education.” (link)

Trivia Question of the Day…Answer: Troy & TCU.

Yesterday's Evening Standard...

The NCAA has announced the creation of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT). The 32-team postseason event, which will be fully owned and funded by the NCAA, will begin in 2024. Details regarding the formation of a selection committee, the selection process, seeding principles and host sites will be released at a later date. The NCAA also released branding for the tournament, which continues to highlight orange in alignment with other NCAA women's basketball branding, including the March Madness logo. (link)

Sankey at the Podium…
+ SEC Commissioner Sankey kicked off SEC Media Days by remarking that “the reality is, only Congress can fully address the challenges facing college athletics. The NCAA cannot fix all of these issues, the courts cannot resolve all of these issues. The states cannot resolve all of these issues, nor can the conferences. Whether congressional action is achievable is a matter of debate. Much debate. But educational opportunity, supporting equitable opportunities for men and for women, ensuring the United States' continued success in the Olympic Games, providing medical care, nutritional support, academic support, mental wellness counseling, these are nonpartisan issues that deserve a nonpartisan solution." Does Sankey believe expansion is done for now? “People will say I get to decide that. Right now it appears others are going to decide that before we have to make any decisions. My view is we know who we are, we're comfortable as a league. ... You go bigger, there are a whole other set of factors that have to be considered with that. I'm not sure I've seen those teased out other than when my mind played out." (link)
+ On sports gambling: “While some states have enacted laws protecting participants, all states with legalized sports gambling must act to ensure enforcement of gaming regulations and put in place clearly stated laws that protect participants from hostile behavior. The race for revenue is understandable. But states and the gambling industry have a responsibility to protect our participants from threats and abuse."
+ On NIL: “In many ways, NIL has been a net positive for young people competing in collegiate athletics, but it has also created a series of realities that put the long-term viability of collegiate athletics at risk. And, we all know there are stories—some told and many untold—of false promises, empty commitments, NIL agreements unfulfilled, inducements offered but not provided, and other behaviors that rightly cause concern."
+ More on NIL: “Student-athletes want to know their competitors from other states are governed by the same rules. Uniformity will ensure a high school student being recruited by universities across the country knows there is a consistent set of rules guiding their NIL activity. Student-athletes ask for our help in navigating this minefield, and they want protections for themselves, their teammates, and their competitors." (link)

BYU AD Holmoe acknowledges his tenure is likely nearer its end than its beginning, telling Deseret News: “I will say this — this is a job that takes a lot of energy, and a lot of passion. At least it does for me. So that’s how I have done it. And I have that (still). Like today, they just gave me a (metaphoric) IV shot of adrenaline, passion, love, energy. Like, I think I can go for 20 (more) years today. Tomorrow could be a different story. The important thing is I need energy and I need passion, and I need to do it right. Gotta do it right. And I care so much about this school, that when the time comes where I feel someone can do it better, I am going to pass that baton. There is no question about it. You are not going to see me drag this thing down. I won’t do it.” Holmoe also addresses TCU’s recent announcement that it will not sell single-game tickets for the Horned Frogs’ home football matchup against BYU or permit ticket-holders to transfer their tickets to other fans. “I think it is a strategy. And I don’t think it is the way the market moves as much as they feel that that could be a competitive advantage. And that, I think, is a tribute to Cougar Nation.” (link)

North Dakota State President Cook and South Dakota State President Dunn deny they have been actively pursuing Mountain West membership, contradicting remarks made last week by former Montana AD O’Day. Cook asserts that “I have not and am not in conversations with the Mountain West Conference about FBS football, nor have I been in conversations with South Dakota State University about the Mountain West Conference.” Dunn echoed those sentiments in a statement through SDSU Director of Marketing and Communications Lockrem. O’Day today offered some clarification, tweeting: “It's been a rumor for some time...if they are, they are only doing their due diligence should any opportunity ever arise. All presidents in their position should. Their job is to put their schools in the best positions to succeed — academically, athletically & financially." (link)

Charlotte AD Hill outlines upgrades coming to Jerry Richardson Stadium this year, including a new video display board, 110 feet of LED ribbon boards, and a sound system. “We will also be adding new premium seating options and some creative menu items at the concession stands. Adjacent to the stadium will be The 49th Acre dedicated to student tailgating, something that is already the envy of schools across the country.” Meanwhile, in Halton Arena, fans can expect larger LED boards that will enhance the in-venue experience. Several men’s basketball coaches open up to The Athletic’s Tucker about the nonstop recruiting calendar, and Connecticut HC Hurley notes: “With the propensity for players to look for greener pastures, it’s disconcerting to be on the road recruiting as much as we are. You don’t know what you’re coming back to. We’re all paranoid, and I’d be a lot happier on campus, on the court — less recruiting days, more time on the court with my team.” Meanwhile, Kentucky HC Calipari, who had been pushing the idea of playing exhibition games against other schools in the summer, now believes that idea should be tabled. “And the reason is: We got too many other things happening right now. You got all kind of stuff that coaches are dealing with. We don’t need to put one more thing on our plate.” One way to at least alleviate the workload would be to push the transfer portal opening past the national championship game. “The fact that the portal was open while the season was still going on is not good. So push the portal back and shorten up the period.” Alabama’s Oats adds: “It can’t be nonstop, all summer long, the possibility of kids leaving and having to recruit again. The NBA has got a free-agency window. Can’t be a free-for-all, all offseason, up until classes start. That’s a nightmare.” (link)

ESPN’s Rittenberg reports eight “former Northwestern players have retained noted civil rights attorney Ben Crump and Chicago law firm Levin & Perconti for a lawsuit against the university for ‘physical, sexual and emotional abuse’ related to the hazing incidents that took place in the program.” Crump: “Whether the coaches at Northwestern approved or participated in the harassment of these players or not, they are responsible for allowing and enabling a toxic, disgusting, and damaging culture in their programs. Sadly, our research suggests that this kind of abuse of student-athletes may be far more common on college campuses than we know, because there is tremendous pressure to keep quiet. It’s time for a reckoning to protect young athletes." According to the firm, “more players are expected to join the legal action in the coming days. The legal action is expected to expand beyond Northwestern’s football program and will expose extreme and abusive hazing in other college athletic programs as well.” (link, link)

Playfly has launched an NYC consulting practice that will be led by former Horizon Media executive Neuman, who started Horizon’s Scout Sports & Entertainment, and Rival CMO Parise. Playfly COO Sloan: “The most exciting thing about this is that they [Neuman and Parise] built an industry-leading sports and experiential agency within another company. That shows collaboration, which is not easy. We think we can do that bigger and better, using their leadership. We also put a premium on people and culture. They’ve done great work there, and that area is vital. It’s what moves a business forward as much as anything.” (link)
