The Mountain West has informed San Diego State that the Aztecs remain a member of the conference, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports, noting that SDSU will “be responsible for covering fees that the conference expensed over legal work during a letter exchange with SDSU about its possible withdrawal.” (link); ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirms Dellenger’s reporting and adds: “This includes a release of the $6.6M dollars that has been withheld from San Diego State, per ESPN source, after SDSU's muddled notice of their intent to withdraw.” (link)

A conference source tells JohnCanzano.com’s namesake the Pac-12 has had “very productive [media rights] negotiations. New entrants have come in. We’re feeling good and our schools will be rewarded for their patience. … All the schools are together.” Canzano goes on to posit that “the news leak on Tuesday felt like a concerted effort from within the conference to manage expectations for Friday’s [Media Day] event. Kliavkoff will address media and the conference’s coaches and players will talk about the upcoming football season on Friday morning. The last thing the Pac-12 wants is to have the football event turn into a media-rights debate. … One thing is evident: The Pac-12 is seeing numbers it likes, has some new partners at the table, and believes a deal is near.” Regarding the league’s possible expansion, Canzano reports: “I’ve been told there’s a considerable gap between the [San Diego State and SMU] and the other two possible additions.” (link)

Prairie View A&M wants to bring Jackson State AD Ashley Robinson back to the Lone Star State, according to HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who reports Robinson is “at least aware of the interest.” Robinson previously led PVAMU from 2013-2018. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Jacksonville Sports Radio he would be interested in ranking football teams 1-82 to determine bowl matchups. “I’d take that, sure. We actually did that in a way during COVID, and it worked really well, and what was interesting was all of our unranked teams that played ranked teams beat the ranked teams.” On playing an eight- or nine-game conference schedule, Sankey remarks: “I tend to think when you expand our fans expect more, but then watching the reaction when we said eight games in Destin – and I'm like the ‘scheduling devil,’ if you will – to the reaction to our show where we announce the matchups…and I was the ‘scheduling angel,’ if you will.” (link)

Former Northwestern Football HC Pat Fitzgerald’s attorney, Dan Webb, responds to yesterday’s lawsuit naming Fitzgerald and other university leaders as defendants: “The complaint recites the same anonymous allegations set forth in a July 8, 2023 newspaper article. Instead of making actual detailed factual allegations about Coach Fitzgerald’s conduct, the complaint makes a variety of broad-based and sweeping allegations ‘upon information and belief’ without citing any specific facts or evidence. Nothing in the John Doe complaint comes close to contradicting the conclusions of the months-long investigation led by Attorney Maggie Hickey — that Coach Fitzgerald had no knowledge whatsoever of any form of hazing within the Northwestern Football Program.” (link)

Former Texas Chancellor William McRaven reaffirms his position that serving as a campus president is the toughest job in the country. In a keynote speech at the annual meeting of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the man who led the raid to kill Osama bin Laden remarked: “It was not hyperbole—I stick by those words.” Why? “The complexity of being a president and all of the constituents you deal with on a day-to-day basis. The president has got to be able to manage all of that, and nobody ever seems completely satisfied. You’re making hundreds if not thousands of small decisions a day. You hope you get 80% of them right, but of course the 20% you don’t get right you get criticized for.” McRaven went on to say that compromise should be embraced but added it’s equally as important to know where not to compromise. “If it is anything that in some way diminishes [the academic reputation of your institution], because you’re not allowing freedom of speech, you’re not allowing faculty members to pursue a particular course that they think is academically important, then you’re failing as an academic leader. You have to be prepared to stand up before your chancellor, your regents, the Legislature, and say, ‘This is the line over which I will not step.’” (link)

Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon details the thinking behind refreshing the Bulldogs’ football helmets and uniforms for the coming season, explaining the department gathered feedback from stakeholders before making any decisions. “We never wanted to change the primary mark of the institution. It’s strong, and the heritage we have. We also want to be innovative and use the script ‘State’ a little bit more. … We’ll still do some other things. And the focus is continuing to celebrate our history. So we will have some additional helmets for those games.” Branding, Selmon continues, matters for several reasons, the impressions of recruits chief among them. “Young kids now, they want to feel good, they want to play good, they want to look good. So we’re doing everything we can at State to make sure we’ve got a recognizable brand.” (link)

Louisiana-Monroe AD John Hartwell talks about the need for upgrades to Malone Stadium and other facilities: “Football’s got some needs, and we need to continue to look at those…but that's six days a year. What we really need to do is focus on those things that our student athletes live in 365 days a year. A team meeting room is one of those things that's out there. An indoor practice facility is one of those things that we've had some conversation about. And potentially how could we look at incorporating an indoor practice facility on the opposite side from the press box and maybe do some renovations at the same time to the stadium itself.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Vermont AD Jeff Schulman makes a Men’s Hockey leadership change as HC Todd Woodcroft will exit & the Catamounts will be led in the interim through the 2023-24 season by AC Steve Wiedler. Per the release: “The University of Vermont Athletic Department has high expectations for the conduct of our coaches and all involved with our department. After reviewing the findings of an investigation conducted by UVM's Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity that was completed this week, it is clear that Coach Woodcroft failed to meet those expectations. The specific conduct leading to the investigation involved inappropriate text messages with a UVM student on multiple occasions that failed to maintain professional boundaries.” (link)

Country Roads Trust President Stephen Ford says the West Virginia-focused collective has “seen some attrition” since the departure of former Men’s Basketball HC Bob Huggins, but “for the most part we’ve had a lot of our supporters step up – either do more or extend their contributions with us.” Ford also says of the broader landscape that “we are in a world now where this is professional sports. You're seeing not quite as big of deals with the athletes as you do see in the NFL and the NBA, but I feel like it will be heading towards that model. … I see this in maybe two, three years, if not sooner, the players do perhaps become employees and receive some kind of rev share. I think then you're going to see the transfer portal die down, I think you'll see NIL…grow and it's going to grow massively. How fast it grows just depends on what happens at the NCAA level and at the state level or federal level.” (link)

Bloomberg Law’s Nicole Sadek and Ronnie Greene examine how poorly or misleadingly constructed NIL contracts can exploit student-athletes, citing two specific deals as examples. “One agreement, pitched to basketball players to promote a New Jersey company on [social media], is just one page and does not say who owns the student’s intellectual-property rights, nor does it define the meaning of net profits. In another contract shopped to college football players, a Texas apparel company proposed keeping at least 40% of the revenue from merchandise sales, a rate one lawyer described as ‘obscene.’ The same contract includes a two-sentence add-on that would lock in that same percentage for any future profit-generating deals…effectively turning the company’s relationship with the athlete into that of an agent and a client.” Former New Mexico track student-athlete Kendall Spencer, now an IP attorney, adds: “There are at least five student-athletes that I know personally who have signed away their IP rights in the state of Florida.” VCU Asst. AD for Compliance Ashley Chiera-Davis, who is also an attorney, laments her inability to warn students against signing bad contracts for fear of NCAA violations. The most she can do is provide education and inform student-athletes they can seek legal representation. “In a lot of ways, acting as conservatively as possible isn’t always serving our student-athletes to the best of our abilities.” More. The Pac-12 will not announce a new media deal at Friday’s Media Day, per The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel and Max Olson, who report the delay is in part attributable to “recent developments in the negotiations.” Per their source: “We’ve seen folks come to the table that were not at the table six months ago. The patience that the presidents and chancellors are showing is paying off, because waiting is going to result in better deals than the league would have gotten three, six, nine months ago.” Beyond the “near future,” there remains no specific timeline for an announcement, per the source. Northwestern President Michael Schill announces two external reviews, one into how the athletic department detects threats and assesses accountability and one into the culture of the athletic department, per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, who notes both reviews will be made public once they are complete. (link); Full letter from Schill. (link); Meanwhile, Rittenberg also reports that “both sets of attorneys representing former Northwestern athletes will hold news conferences Wednesday morning in Chicago. Am told a former NU football player will attend at least one of the conferences and address reporters. No plaintiffs have identified themselves yet.” (link)

Former Northwestern Football HC Pat Fitzgerald, President Michael Schill, former President Schapiro, AD Derrick Gragg and the Northwestern Board of Trustees are listed as defendants in a lawsuit filed by a former football student-athlete who alleges the program and coaches were negligent in allowing hazing inside the team's locker room. The identity of the player remains anonymous, but his attorneys say other players, as well as student-athletes from other sports, are expected to join the suit in the coming weeks. The attorneys also say it’s possible that more defendants, including former Wildcats AD/current ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, could be added to the suit, according to which the plaintiff will seek damages in excess of $50K. Northwestern in a statement reiterates its commitment to student-athlete welfare and adds: “When the University was made aware of anonymous hazing complaints in November 2022, we acted immediately with an independent investigator to conduct a comprehensive review of the allegations. We have taken a number of subsequent actions to eliminate hazing from our football program, and we will introduce additional actions in the coming weeks. The administration is committed to working alongside the Board of Trustees, the faculty, and the student body to ensure that hazing has no place at Northwestern." (link)

Syracuse AD John Wildhack talks about the retirement of former Orange Men’s Basketball HC Jim Boeheim and says the two engaged in a “bittersweet conversation” as Boeheim explained his intentions. “What I really respect about Coach Boeheim is every coach will say, ‘Hey, I really care about the program going forward.’ Every coach will say that. Jim Boeheim really does care deeply about this program, about this university. I’m thrilled he’s still part of the university; he’s still part of the athletics department. He’s going to help us in a number of ways. He’s going to help us raise money, which we need to do.’' Asked if Boeheim could’ve coached next season if he’d wanted to, Wildhack replies: “The conversation we had was Jim was ready. Jim was ready to step down and retire and that’s the conversation. You deal with the moment and you deal with the reality of the moment.’' Wildhack also addresses the recently settled lawsuit between the school and football student-athlete LeQuint Allen, who was suspended for two semesters for his role in a campus fight last year. Wildhack declined to say whether he agreed with the school’s suspension or if he advocated for Allen. “That’s not a role an athletic director should play. There’s separation and there’s separation for good reason in terms of there’s disciplinary anything in terms of university conduct.” (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham talks about the leadup to joining the Big 12 and recalls getting ready to make its case following the departures of Texas and Oklahoma. “We prepped like you would for a pitch, and we were ready to go with a pitch. We sat down, and within a minute, (former Big 12 Commissioner) Bob Bowlsby said, ‘We’d like Cincinnati to be a part of what we’re doing.’ Now, [UC President Neville] Pinto is the most stoic person that you’ll ever meet, but I remember him under the table, hitting me on the leg. It was a really cool moment.” The wheels had been in motion prior to Cunningham’s arrival, and he tells The Athletic’s Williams that joining a Power 5 conference was part of his interview process. “Immediately upon taking the job, our path forward was to find a way to a power conference. Nobody was trying to hide that it was clearly a goal.” Bowlsby notes that a previous meeting with UC leadership in 2016 helped expedite the move from the standpoint that the league was familiar with what UC brought to the table. “I prioritized what I believed were schools with the highest upside and best potential to come in the league and compete at a high level immediately and have growth potential.” (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh acknowledges that when it comes to NIL he “had questions as to whether or not a market of our size could support a program of ours relative to others. And I don't have those concerns today.” UW has partnered with several organizations, such as Altius Sports and The Varsity Collective, as well as created YouDub to educate its student-athletes on taxes, personal brand development and contracts, all of which McIntosh says “required an incredible amount of bandwidth on the part of our organization.” He adds: “We’ve had over 200 athletes across men's and women's sports that have benefited from NIL opportunities made possible by the collective. You can't drive around Madison without seeing one of our athletes on a billboard or as part of a promotion and that's what it was intended to be. … It's important that we can demonstrate the success that our student-athletes are having at Wisconsin, and while it's prohibited to use NIL in terms of recruiting, it is important that we can demonstrate that there are opportunities here once recruits become Badgers.” (link)

More from the 2023 NACDA Convention, as Eastern Illinois AD Tom Michael joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the importance of the OVC-Big South partnership, his role as president of FCS ADA and his post on the FCS Selection Committee, as well as trends throughout the industry. In talking about the latter, Michael believes President Baker’s perspective as a former student-athlete will help inform in determining “what the status of our student-athletes means as we move forward and all of those things around that whole centerpiece of making sure that the educational model of of these young men and women who come to our institutions to participate in sport also leave with a degree in their hand – and maybe more importantly are prepared to be successful when they leave. I hope that's why many, most, all of us got into this business is because of that student-athlete experience and the ability to use their sport as a vehicle as a mechanism as a means to say I'm going to be better because of this.” Full interview on Connect. Richmond Football HC Russ Huesman contends the university’s academic reputation works in the Spiders’ favor when it comes to player retention and lays out the following scenario: A player is likely to redshirt as a true freshman, so it’s unreasonable to expect that he would transfer after that year. As a redshirt freshman, the player performs well but has improvement to make and does not attract interest from FBS schools. “Comes in his third year and he’s an All-American. Now, in his mind, he’s thinking, ‘I’m one year away from an elite Richmond degree. I’m not leaving at this point.’” Furthermore, Huesman notes NIL “has affected us very minimally,” and The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor adds that many, if not most, FCS-to-FBS transfers occur after a player has graduated. While Huesman prefers to build the program on high school recruits, he acknowledges that “we’re probably going to lose a couple [to the portal] just like everybody else,’ and then try to gain a couple just like everybody else.” (link)

For instance, WVU has had just 10 ADs in the last 107 years, three men’s basketball HCs over the previous 46 years, and five football HCs over the last 44 years. (link)

Stratechery purveyor Ben Thompson parses Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments regarding ESPN’s future and points out that first and foremost it’s newsworthy Disney is committed to keeping ESPN “because it wasn’t a sure thing.” As Iger pointed out, though, live sports is an “advertiser’s dream,” and Thompson observes: “Disney, like all streamers, has very high hopes for building a big advertising business on streaming. … ESPN provides the best possible anchor for a broad-based advertising business.” Another reason for keeping ESPN in the fold involves a possible plan to recreate the bundle. “Might Disney ultimately offer all of its streaming content only as a single service? Yes, the price would be very high, but the combination of Disney content, Hulu general entertainment, and ESPN would mean there is content for everyone the whole year, mitigating the churn issues that have afflicted Disney+ in particular.” Regarding a potential strategic partnership, Thompson believes Apple, Amazon or Google are likely the top candidates. “Specifically, those are the three companies that actually own the devices people consume content on, which means they own payments, which is the biggest obstacle to ESPN’s mooted idea of being a sports aggregator.” Further, Thompson notes Iger name-checked the new Apple Vision Pro headset. “The single most important factor in the Vision Pro’s success will likely be how quickly entertainment is built for it, and as Cook noted while introducing Iger, “The Walt Disney Company is the world’s leader in entertainment.” (link)
