The 562’s JJ Fiddler highlights some of the challenges and idiosyncrasies associated with the Long Beach State AD position, noting that, according to the job listing for the role, the new AD will report to the university’s treasurer/CFO, not the university president. “This is unusual in college sports and a first at LBSU.” Long Beach State Chief Communications & Brand Officer Jeff Cook explains the “university’s chief financial officer also effectively serves as chief operations officer. This reporting relationship for the foreseeable future provides the necessary institutional support to Beach Athletics during a time of leadership transition and the ongoing evolution of the Division I landscape nationally.” Cook also says increased student fees should effectively close the structural budget deficit, which was $4M in 2022, for the future. The next AD will also have to address a roof leak at the Walter Pyramid which could cost up to an estimated $55M to repair. Cook notes the school is “currently conducting a study of the Pyramid’s roof to better understand options for necessary repairs to prevent leaks during rainy weather. … We are limited not by willingness to pursue a variety of upgrades, but by available resources. We will continue to make strategic investments in our facilities and advocate for more state support, while bringing philanthropic and sponsorship opportunities to supporters and organizations who can continue to meaningfully impact our programs.” (link)

Here’s another newsworthy item from the recently unveiled draft legislation of the College Athletes Protection and Compensation Act of 2023 submitted by U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Jerry Moran (R-KS): It includes a provision which states student-athletes would be able to return to college sports after going through a pro draft if they don’t take money from a league, team or agent and declare their intent to resume their college careers no later than seven days after the draft. (link); LEARFIELD CEO Cole Gahagan also spent some time yesterday with Booker, tweeting: “It’s encouraging to have a lawmaker in congress who genuinely cares for those in and around college athletics. Progress in the making…” (link)

The NCAA has asked several schools to recommend “one student-athlete from your school that could provide good perspective of the NIL environment” for a meeting in Indianapolis next week, according to On3’s Andy Wittry. The schools include Alabama, Boston College, Brown, Colorado, Florida, Georgetown, Illinois State, Marquette, Maryland, Notre Dame, Ohio, Ohio State, Saint Joseph’s, Texas Tech, USF and Washington State. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner weighs in on how the departure of Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne will impact the Pac-12 and points out that half of the remaining 10 campus CEOs “are either new to their positions or have announced their departures. … What’s more, there is good reason to question [Washington President Ana Mari] Cauce’s interest in college sports and [Arizona State President Michael] Crow’s instincts for college sports — he was a fervent supporter of Larry Scott — and we can’t help but wonder how much longer [Colorado Chancellor Phil] DiStefano, a septuagenarian, plans to remain on the job. In other words, there are just two presidents, [Washington State’s] Schulz and [Arizona’s] Robbins, with ample experience in office and a solid grasp of college athletics. Fortunately for the Pac-12, both of them are on the executive committee.” Wilner also answers a mailbag question about whether the Pac-12 would be in its current situation if the ADs were in charge. His response: No. “The athletic directors would have been smart enough to accept ESPN’s offer in 2018 to partner on the Pac-12 Networks and sign the conference to a long-term deal for the Tier 1 rights. … The L.A. schools would not have been nearly as motivated to leave; nor would they have possessed the opportunity (because of the long-term contractual commitment).” (link)

News from Northwestern…
+ Northwestern Football AHC Matt MacPherson witnessed student-athletes engaging in various forms of hazing, former student-athlete Ramon Diaz tells USA Today’s Josh Peter. Diaz: “He would come in and laugh at the guy(s) who was doing the naked pull-ups.” Peter adds: “MacPherson also saw players being dry-humped during a ritual called ‘running,’ according to [another] person in contact with several former players.” (link)
+ Headlining industry attorney Tom Mars asserts that the “slanderous allegations being made to the media by the lawyers for the Northwestern players don’t add up. Their lawsuits simply parrot the reporting of the school newspaper and don’t include ANY specific facts that they learned after allegedly interviewing more than 50 people. How could the lawyers for the ‘John Doe’ plaintiffs interview more than 50 people, including more than a dozen players, and not be able to name a single member of Fitzgerald’s coaching staff who they claim saw or knew about the alleged hazing activities?” (link)

The Nebraska-focused 1890 Initiative has signed a 10-year, $5M partnership with the Nebraska Crossing outdoor lifestyle center and JUSTDATA to support the Huskers’ volleyball program. Details have yet to be released, but On3’s Pete Nakos reports the “$5M gift earmarked exclusively for Nebraska volleyball is the biggest donation a collective has publicly received solely for women’s sports in the NIL Era.” (link)

The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder offers a glimpse at the logistics of flying cross-country to and from Penn State, noting the University Park Airport “isn’t long enough to allow for certain narrow-body aircraft types such as the Boeing 737-800, 737-900 and 757-300.” While those aircraft can and do operate there, Snyder points out they have to make certain concessions to do so, “whether it’s the number of passengers, payloads or fuel loads. For football teams traveling to and from the West Coast, this is significant. It means a team can’t fly directly in or out of State College with all of its equipment in the belly of the aircraft.” Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft has already begun making inquiries to professional teams about how to best handle sleep schedules. He has also asked colleagues whether it’s best to take a redeye home or wait until the next morning. He tells Snyder: “We will be able to get out of here, that I’m pretty confident in. The equipment is the thing we don’t really have an answer for right now.” More from behind the scenes. (link)

Former New Mexico AD Paul Krebs took the stand in his embezzlement trial yesterday and explained that golf trips are a common way DI schools fundraise. The Lobo Fund, he added, made a $49K deposit, but when major donors backed out, Krebs was left with three spots he couldn’t fill worth $24K. To entice more donors to sign up, Krebs paid for part of their trip with an athletics account he says he thought he could use, and repaid the Lobo Club for part of the down payment from a university contingency fund. Prosecutors questioned how Krebs, after seven years on the job, wouldn’t know the spending policies. Krebs estimated the athletics department ultimately made between $300K and $400K off of the trip. Jury deliberations continue today. (link, link)

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed into law a bill that will allow colleges and universities to sell alcohol at football, basketball and hockey games. Sales will be allowed to begin an hour before games start and end when the games end, and schools will be permitted to apply for licenses for 100 total days during a calendar year. A spokesperson for Michigan State says MSU is “committed” to putting a plan in place to sell alcohol, while Michigan AVP for Public Affairs Rick Fitzgerald notes the matter is under discussion and a decision has yet to be made by campus leaders. Iowa football student-athlete Noah Shannon will not participate in Big Ten Media Days due to his involvement in the ongoing sports gambling investigation. Shannon had been slated to attend next week’s event but says in a statement: “Given the circumstances, I told Coach Ferentz it would be best for him to select another player. Since the NCAA review is not yet complete, I don’t feel it is right for me to represent the team.” (link)

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) have released a bipartisan discussion draft of the College Athletes Protection and Compensation Act of 2023. The legislation would create an entity called the College Athletics Corporation which, per Steve Berkowitz, “would be charged with creating a formal certification process for people seeking to represent athletes in name, image and likeness (NIL) dealings. It also would maintain a publicly available database showing a variety of data that schools would have to provide annually, including the number, average and total value of athlete endorsement contracts, all broken down by sport, race and ethnicity, and gender. In addition, the new entity would establish a medical trust fund that athletes could access during and after their playing careers. Money for the fund would come from annual contributions by the NCAA and by schools and conferences that have at least $50M in yearly revenue.” Furthermore, the Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the corporation, would be required to establish health and safety standards to “protect college athletes from serious injury and conditions, mistreatment and abuse, and death.” Asked why the draft does not contain some of the pro-athlete provisions included in the College Athlete Bill of Rights, Blumenthal explains: “We are aiming at bipartisan consensus here and what we regard as the most necessary and pressing needs and challenges. And we believe that this consensus will gain the bipartisan majority that we need to pass this legislation and do it soon.” (link)

After hearing a report from the NCAA’s NIL working group, the DI Council, last month the “room fell silent – aside from the voice of the commissioner of the SEC,” per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Dellenger: “I am concerned that we had the opportunity for observations, comments or questions and I was the only one who spoke. You have a DI leadership group receiving a report from a working group, well presented, and only one of 40 representatives engaged in this conversation. We spend more time talking about the committee selection process than we do about the leading issue we are facing, which is name, image and likeness. Maybe for some within Division I, there is an imaginary world where name, image and likeness doesn’t touch them. I think that’s exactly what I described it as — an imaginary world. Those in leadership positions owe their time and position to this topic. … I think we’re all waiting to see NCAA oversight of this area, particularly around the involvement of boosters in recruiting. Direct communication (from boosters) and making of offers, which doesn’t seem to have any relationship to antitrust law, doesn’t bump up against any laws that I know of. I’m just waiting to see some clarity around how the NCAA is going to enforce.” Lots more from Sankey, including his thoughts on why “state laws don’t mandate conflict with NCAA policy.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham joins the Ovies + Giglio podcast, says he doesn’t believe the Smith Center is an appropriate place to sell alcohol, calling it a “perfect facility for 9K people” that UNC regularly fits 21K into. “We’d have to make some renovations, modifications before I’d really consider it.” Cunningham also opens up about the intractability of getting out from under the ACC’s GOR: “People say, well, just get out, pay the fee and then go to court and settle the grant of rights. Well, I'm not sure you can, and I don't know how long it would take, and I don't know what the number would be. So, in my opinion, the better thing to do is make this league the best we can possibly make it.” Full Q&A. (link)

Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich Q&As with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz about the Hurricanes’ athletic season, fundraising momentum for football, communication with league ADs, staying abreast of emerging trends and lots more. On his biggest priorities for the upcoming academic year: “I want to see us take the next step competitively in a number of our sports. For example, basketball, making sure that we're providing them with what's needed for them to stay at that level. We need to continue to do an outstanding job raising dollars, and we will. … We also have a significant milestone. We have the 40th anniversary of the first national championship football team here at the University of Miami, the 1983 Hurricanes and we're looking forward to an incredible celebration with that later on this fall.” The full conversation is now available on Connect. + More on Vermont parting ways with Men’s Hockey HC Todd Woodcroft. According to an internal investigation, Woodcroft was let go for inappropriate conduct. “The specific conduct leading to the investigation involved inappropriate text messages with a UVM student on multiple occasions that failed to maintain professional boundaries.” Catamounts AD Jeff Schulman: “The athletic department has very high standards and expectations of our coaches and of our staff. That’s particularly true for head coaches who have a special responsibility just given the visibility of their roles as mentors and role models for our student athletes.” Woodcroft’s attorney contends UVM’s decision was “contrary to the facts and the law. We intend to pursue justice for Mr. Woodcroft, who has been an outstanding coach and community advocate for over two decades.” (link)

The Athletic’s Kalyn Kahler and Brian Hamilton talk with 21 former Northwestern football student-athletes and staffers in an attempt to determine how and when hazing became a “nearly unavoidable part of the experience in the school’s football program.” They observe that “what might have started as crude behavior during Fitzgerald’s All-American playing days from 1993-96 under head coach Gary Barnett grew increasingly toxic across subsequent coaching tenures, and no one in a position of authority seemed inspired to stop it. One former player who was a freshman in the 2010s tells The Athletic: “I knew this day would come. If someone were to run an investigation on us, we are f—ed.” Much of the hazing seems to have taken place at the preseason Camp Kenosha, which began in 1992, and another player from the 2010s observes: “When you take (a team) off-site to a camp with no interaction, no women, sh– is going to get weird. You are in Kenosha, you have to be off the grid the whole time, what do you think is going to happen? Young boys messing around and doing stuff.” Lots more. (link)

Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin shares his thoughts about student-athletes being designated as employees, explaining during SEC Media Days that he used to believe they should, “so they can have real contracts. So, when you come you can sign somebody to a two, three, four-year contract. But there are way more issues. That solves one problem but then it opens up five, 10 more when they’re actually employees of a university. I don’t have the exact answers. … I’ve told our players. I’ve told our parents of our significant players. It is a great time to be a kid or a parent with where college football is. I’m like they’ll probably eventually fix this, so you will be [in] this one window of a couple years where you literally can leverage your program every window or you can go into free agency and find the most money out there. And now we’re seeing you really get paid three times if you want to. You can get paid coming out of high school. You can one-time transfer, go in, get the most money, get paid again and then you can grad transfer and get paid again.” Kiffin goes on to note he’s not complaining about it “because we’ve taken advantage of it. But I don’t think that’s really good for college football. These massive overhauls of rosters every year, that’s not really good for college football.” (link, link)

A group of Arizona supporters has formed the Desert Takeover Football Collective, which will be powered by Blueprint Sports. Wildcats AD Heeke: “Arizona Athletics has been a national leader in this emerging space, and this new and exciting program is a tremendous opportunity to enhance the experience of student-athletes. NIL is now an integral part of our department’s longstanding Commitment to an Athlete’s Total Success (C.A.T.S). Support of Arizona Football through the Desert Takeover Football Collective is crucial as we look to maintain our competitive position in the Pac-12 and nationally.” (link)

+ Oregon State’s season ticket football sales are up roughly 20% YoY with a 20 percent bump over about 16,700. Beavers Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Elcano: “We’re going to land somewhere between 20% and 30% growth. I don’t want to say too high. We could have 30% because of the momentum and the stadium. Everything beyond 20% is icing on the cake.” (link)
+ Rice raised over $2.1M through the Owl Club, marking a 40% YoY increase and the highest total in five years. (link)
