Colorado AD Rick George reflects on 10 years of leadership in Boulder & also comments on his current contract situation: “I have less than three years left on my contract now, and I don’t see me working past that time frame in this position.” More on George’s tenure as Buffs’ Women’s Soccer HC Danny Sanchez notes key facility improvements: “We understand that things can’t happen overnight. And it’s not inexpensive to do things in Boulder. Never once did we feel the administration wasn’t supporting us. It was just a matter of the right time and the right place. We knew it would happen. But I’d be lying to you if I didn’t say the first time I drove by and saw those lights going up, you get goose bumps. It just really shows the level of commitment to spend that money out there for our student-athletes. It’s fantastic.” (link)

Liberty AD Ian McCaw joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention to chat about the process of hiring a new football coach, the move to Conference USA and the impact of the league’s TV deal with ESPN and CBS Sports Network, playing four straight weekday football games in October and more. Most notably, asked whether he believes in the idea of having a football commissioner, McCaw explains: “I'm in favor of there being an executive director of football within the NCAA structure similar to what Dan Gavitt is for men's basketball. I think that would serve the membership in the FBS extremely well if we’re able to get to that point, so hopefully we do. Football is obviously the largest enterprise in College athletics, and we need to be paying special attention to it.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. (link)

Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton on the introduction of The Flock collective designed by an outside group to raise NIL monies for Mocs student-athletes: “I support the collective and that is a need, but also our number one priority is we've got a long way to go to continue to build the Mocs Club and our budgets and facilities and on and on and on. But I just feel like if I don't come out and say I support the collective — and it's a necessary deal to be able to maintain competitiveness — what I don't want is a year and a half from now, (men’s basketball HC) Dan Earl has a losing season, (women’s basketball HC Shawn) Poppie has a losing season and (football HC) Rusty (Wright) has a losing season and people are saying, 'Well, three years ago you were great. That was a charade.' But this is what we need to compete on that same level. In basketball, two-thirds of the conference is doing that, and we've got to find a way in, so that's where my role and job is, to educate and then support people giving.” The Flock is aiming to raise $325K. Florida A&M’s football program has been temporarily suspended after a rap music video was released by Real Boston Richey with a portion of the video shot from within the Rattlers locker room without permission. FAMU HC Willie Simmons calls graphic language used in the video “not consistent with Florida A&M's core values, principles and beliefs.” Real Boston Richey donned a Rattlers helmet in the video, plus some student-athletes appear in the background. More from Simmons: “It's FAMU, it's our brand, it's our facility. Kids are going to be kids, but I am also trying to help them understand to be super mindful of your involvement and decisions. We will make a determination to address those (involved) individually or the entire team.” An investigation has been launched into the situation. (link); Here’s the full letter from Simmons. (link)

SBJ’s John Ourand reports the “strategic partners” Disney CEO Bob Iger noted the company may seek out for ESPN may come from private equity. Ourand says his sources are “pessimistic” about tech firms, such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Netflix partnering with ESPN, and also expressed skepticism about potential partnerships with Fanatics and Electronic Arts. “The most popular answer centered on private equity investors like KKR, Apollo or Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed media company run by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs. By going the private equity route, Iger would have cover to manage the business more aggressively and move more quickly into sports gaming and streaming. This would let Iger take ESPN’s financials—which are likely to be hampered by the continued shrinking of the cable bundle — off Disney’s balance sheet, while also allowing him to keep his hand in the sports business.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Mike Rooney breaks down the pros and cons of a 72-team tournament with 32 initial hosts, noting first that the model “converts our current regional weekend into two weekends in which everyone is playing a three-game series.” While there are some negatives – Rooney points out the current postseason format is “going splendidly” – he concludes there are too many positives to ignore. For one, expanding to 72 teams would still include just 24% of all DI programs. For comparison, the NFL (44%), NBA (53%) and MLB (40%) all include far higher percentages. Furthermore, at least in the case of last season, expanding to 72 would help address some of the issues many had with the RPI as the eight additional teams would have come from six different conferences. Other pros: Thursday night play-in games that “could be a blast,” alleviating the postseason asks of pitching staffs, more TV money, and more investment by adding more hosts. Rooney on the latter: “This is arguably the most impactful change we will discuss. If you want to get your athletic department and community energized around college baseball, bring them to the postseason. … If we want the Big Ten to continue to grow its investment in college baseball, and we absolutely do, [its lack of hosting in recent years] isn’t great.” Lots more. Elon officially introduced Miami (FL) Senior Deputy AD Jennifer Strawley as its new AD yesterday. Strawley: “We must be bold and innovative to best position Elon for success in the ever-changing world of intercollegiate athletics while remaining steadfast in our commitment to our values and to our integrity.” Phoenix President Connie Ledoux Book: “Jennifer’s commitment to the holistic development of our student-athletes aligns perfectly with our institution’s values, and her presence will undoubtedly enhance the overall experience of our athletes.” More, including Strawley’s thanks to 17-year Elon AD Dave Blank, whose leadership she referred to as “nothing short of extraordinary.” (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel gets an unnamed Pac-12 official on the record to provide more context around yesterday’s angle of new players coming to the table for the league’s media rights opportunity: “Think about what the media and technology companies have been going through the last nine months — economic downturn, soft ad market, worse stock performance for most of those guys in decades, layoffs, writers and now actors strikes. It’s been a brutal economic time. We’re just starting to come out of that. What we’ve seen is, every time we wait, we get more opportunities and better numbers.” More key notes from Mandel: “Two league sources told The Athletic on Friday there’s not unanimity among the presidents to expand at all. It would take an 8-2 vote, and at least two schools — one of them assumed to be Oregon — don’t currently support it. The rationale being, they’d rather compete with fewer schools for the Pac-12’s berth in the expanded College Football Playoff, not to mention sharing CFP revenue with fewer mouths.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the new-look Big 12, renovations to Memorial Stadium, the overall momentum of the football program and lots more. Goff acknowledges there was a period of feeling some instability following the departures of Texas and Oklahoma but now says the tone throughout the conference is optimistic. “Bob Bowsby at the time led us through the additions of these four [new members], was decisive, was strategic and went out and got it done. Now, here we are, fast forward a couple years, instability in the industry generally and in some of our conferences out there, but we really feel incredibly aligned, I think we feel like there is real stability. Part of that is there’s some strength in numbers.” On Commissioner Yormark: “Amazing brand builder and he's stretching all of our comfort zones and I think without question that's what we needed in the Big 12. I think the leadership – the presidents, the chancellors, the athletic directors on and on are responsive to that and helping support a much more maybe progressive approach from a conference angle.” More from Goff on Connect. The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel posits the shift of some ACC football and basketball games to the The CW constitutes a win for fans who have trouble finding games amid the oft-confusing array of streaming options. Meanwhile, The CW President Dennis Miller explains there is a “very strong desire to really build live sports into The CW for the first time and take care of our broadcasters and advertisers. Live is what we know works in broadcast, so we are in conversations with lots of leagues and teams right now. … With all of the sports tectonic plates shifting right now, (Gray and Raycom) brought to our attention that there was an opportunity to capture high-quality college football and basketball with the ACC. We want to improve the value of the real estate on weekends for CW affiliates, so it lined up very nicely with our affiliate groups, including Gray and Sinclair and Nexstar and others. We quickly moved into negotiation mode.” As for what comes next after the deal expires in 2027, Miller tells Teel: “We’re going to get better and better at being a platform for sports. I’m really confident this will be a long-term play for us, but I haven’t had time to focus on 2027 yet.” (link)

SBJ’s Abe Madkour breaks down what the NCAA must take into consideration for its media rights negotiations: “It seems like a certainty that the women’s basketball tournament will be sold as a stand-alone after it drew record ratings this past April. But what else? The women’s and men’s College World Series both rated very well, and women’s gymnastics and volleyball also have audiences. Supporters of these sports are advocating for them to be pulled out and sold individually. The fear is that if the NCAA pulls out too many popular sports, the package will become so diluted it will lose any value and defeats the purpose of maximizing rights fees and distribution. Remember, these are only for the championships — not the regular season or the conference championships. It’s limited inventory and that’s what the NCAA and Endeavor will have to navigate as they go to the marketplace. … Talks are expected to unfold later this year.” (link)

Sportico legal analyst Michael McCann breaks out some of the facets of the College Athletes Protection and Compensation Act of 2023 draft legislation proposed by U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) for a closer inspection. McCann observes the “creation of [the College Athletics Corporation] would be new for college sports, but not for the American economy. Congress has created corporations that, though they vary, function in some ways like a business while being accountable to government oversight. Amtrak, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are all examples of such corporations.” McCann goes on to suggest the CAC is likely to face pushback, “especially regarding its subpoena power. The organization could be viewed as threatening and potentially chill the NIL market. College athletes who find themselves under CAC investigation might feel like they need to hire attorneys. The CAC’s role in certifying agents could also face resistance. Sports agents are ordinarily certified by labor organizations, such as the NFLPA or NBPA; the CAC will not be one.” More from McCann. Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz Q&As with Cal gymnastics student-athlete/DI SAAC representative Elise Byun about the importance of the student-athlete voice, NIL and national standards, and the challenges that student-athletes face in today’s landscape. In discussing what NIL is really like from the student-athlete perspective, Byun explains: “At least for women’s sports I can say that NIL has done great change. It puts us on the map, it shows that, one, female student-athletes are amazing athletes in general, and, two, it gives visibility that our sports are fun to watch, and if you put us on broadcast people will watch. I think that's really exciting. But I think the kind of harsh reality of NIL is that it impacts recruiting and with all the different state legislators and all the different rules, it's hard to make that an even playing field, so hopefully in the future we can see some of that change.” Full interview. Florida football student-athletes during SEC Media Days shared their thoughts on the recruitment of former QB commit Jaden Rashada & reports of a $13M NIL deal. Gators center Kingsley Eguakun told reporters: “I mean… I believed it, I guess. But at the end of the day, reporters can report anything they want. For real. It was really up in the air. But if he did and (they) felt like they had to give him that to come to the school, then it is what it is. Like I said, I’m not worrying about anybody else’s pockets because it doesn’t do anything for me. He’s not going to give me any of that.” UF WR Ricky Pearsall added: “We understood it was the recruiting process and NIL is a thing now. So, all the guys respect him and his decision. I think all the guys are just worried about what’s going on in the locker room, not necessarily outside stuff.” (link)
