Gordon AD Jonathan Tymann will retire at the end of the month after 14 years leading the Fighting Scots. The LEC will sponsor Men’s Ice Hockey as its 22nd championship sport beginning in 2025-26. Up to five league members for Women’s Ice Hockey, Commissioner Pamela Samuelson hopes to eventually add a sixth from inside or outside the LEC to trigger sponsorship and secure an AQ. (link); Keene State will add Men’s Ice Hockey, Women’s Ice Hockey and Esports for 2024-25. KSC President Dr. Melinda Treadwell: “The decision supports strategic enrollment and potential academic program growth for our College. In the case of hockey, of equal strategic benefit is that this investment supports our community's growing passion and the future success of Keene Ice. SUNY Morrisville AD Matt Grawrock camped with Extra Points’ Matt Brown to dive deeper into the Mustangs’ new black field turf that took the internet by storm. Grawrock: “I thought we might get some regional media attention, maybe something in D3.ticker. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect ESPN, Sports Illustrated…all of this national attention.” Grawrock on the attention the turf can bring the school: “At our level, because you’re small, your fate isn’t always necessarily in your control…with this kind of project, we get to control things. This is our field; this is our story. And I think our student-athletes really, really gravitated towards that and having a unique identity. […] “Do I think we’re going to get a student or a recruit just because we have a black field? No. But I do think it can get us in some conversations that maybe we weren’t in before…and then, once we get them on campus, get them interacting with our staff… We need that oxygen, we need that enrollment, we need the opportunities to be able to give people a unique experience.” As for the questions over the temperature concerns, the university consulted research that shows black is two or three degrees hotter than green, with Grawrock adding: “We’re in upstate New York. Our average September temperature here is 65 degrees. We might actually want that extra temperature in November. We might want it for when our lacrosse team is out on that field in March. It’s not going to be this burning inferno.” (link)

SBJ’s Abe Madkour breaks down what the NCAA must take into consideration for its media rights negotiations: “It seems like a certainty that the women’s basketball tournament will be sold as a stand-alone after it drew record ratings this past April. But what else? The women’s and men’s College World Series both rated very well, and women’s gymnastics and volleyball also have audiences. Supporters of these sports are advocating for them to be pulled out and sold individually. The fear is that if the NCAA pulls out too many popular sports, the package will become so diluted it will lose any value and defeats the purpose of maximizing rights fees and distribution. Remember, these are only for the championships — not the regular season or the conference championships. It’s limited inventory and that’s what the NCAA and Endeavor will have to navigate as they go to the marketplace. … Talks are expected to unfold later this year.” (link)

USOPC Chief of Paralympic Sport Julie Dussliere joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the alliance between the USOPC and the NCAA, which includes hosting Paralympic events at NCAA championship sites, how athletic administrators can best support and promote Paralympic sports and Paralympic athletes on campus, what sports the USOPC and NCAA might soon be collaborating on, and lots more. Dussliere says the USOPC is working closely with the USTA and NCAA on integrating wheelchair tennis national championships into the NCAA championships. “Some other sports we've had great success – obviously with track and field, so we are looking to expand that a bit next year, and then potentially look at swimming, rowing, volleyball and maybe a few others down the road.” Dussliere also tells Banker opportunity continues to be a chief priority for bringing more sports to college campuses. “There are athletes out there who may not know they're eligible to be a paralympic athlete or they could be training without the knowledge of the athletic department or the coaches. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed into law a bill that will allow colleges and universities to sell alcohol at football, basketball and hockey games. Sales will be allowed to begin an hour before games start and end when the games end, and schools will be permitted to apply for licenses for 100 total days during a calendar year. (link)
