Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff sits down with JohnCanzano.com’s namesake to discuss the league’s media rights negotiations, why he wants to embrace the Big 12 v. Pac-12 rivalry and more. Kliavkoff says of the media rights talks: “It seems like almost every week for the last eight or nine months there has been some craziness going on amongst our partners, and the conversation we've been having in the boardroom is in that kind of environment you don't really want to be doing a media rights deal because you're going to be in a place where you're leaving money on the table and your partner is not going to be very excited about doing the deal. So, we have to be patient and the board has been incredibly patient and, candidly, the athletic directors, too. This is not easy for them. They’re getting pressure left, right and center from every constituent. … What I have seen is that particularly in the last month or so but even earlier than that, the macroeconomic conditions were getting better…and people have started coming back to the table who were not able to be at the table three months ago or six months ago.” On the Big 12 rivalry, Kliavkoff says it’s “great. As soon as we get our media rights deal, I think Brett and I should sit down and figure out a way to solve it on the field. Let’s put that rivalry on the field.” (link)

Canzano also chats with Oregon AD Rob Mullens, who says the Ducks are around the 90% renewal range for football season tickets. At least one game is sold out while two others are nearly sold out, and Mullens believes the Oregon State game and possibly the Hawai’i matchup could also result in sellouts. Regarding how scheduling impacts season ticket sales, Mullens explains UO has found big-name opponents don’t necessarily translate into commitments for seven Saturdays, but “there’s a little bit of FOMO when you have a big event. So, people are willing to pay a premium for a big event but less likely to commit to” a full season. Therefore, it’s important to have a “longer menu” when it comes to ticket options. UNC Asheville AD Janet Cone, Huron Managing Director Tim Walsh and Huron advisor/Duke AD Emeritus Kevin White join AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss using data to tell the story and shape the future of Bulldogs Athletics through the Dream Bigger. Achieve More strategic plan. Cone says utilizing Huron’s outcome-driven models has allowed her and her team to provide both internal stakeholders, such as the university’s Board of Trustees, and external contributors, such as major donors, with data indicating the level of investment necessary for sustained department-wide success. White says of the strategic planning process it’s “vibrant, it’s fluid and it's ever-changing. So to kind of catch up to your cohort or your peers at the moment isn't the end game. The end game is to get to where they're going to be in three, four, five years and to have that kind of an anticipatory project to take you to that place.” Cone adds: “Kevin mentioned the word peers, I think for a mid-major like us if we send a gap analysis between us and some Power 5, you know, they're not going to listen. Taking your peers and doing those comparisons and so when you come back to your campus and your donors the gap is something that you actually can achieve.” Full conversation on ADU. (link)

The NCAA Committee for Legislative Relief Administrative Committee has approved a blanket waiver to permit FBS institutions to increase the football preseason participant limit from 110 to 120 for the 2023-24 academic year. The waiver does not change any current legislative exceptions to replace student-athletes who voluntarily withdraw or sustain an injury that prevents further participation in preseason activities. The Football Oversight Committee will continue to review the legislation and decide whether to introduce legislation for future academic years. (link)

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports the “group of former Northwestern football players working with civil rights attorney Ben Crump and the Chicago law firm of Levin & Perconti will announce their lawsuit against the school Monday.” According to a release from the firm, the “complaint will include named plaintiffs with horrific incident details." Also per Rittenberg, former Wildcats QB Lloyd Yates will file a three-count lawsuit. “Complaint identifies one Northwestern football coach who allegedly witnessed the hazing and sexual conduct and failed to report it. Other coaches and staff accused of disregarding obvious raucous, hazing and sexual acts. The complaint also will state that two assistant coaches were hazed in similar ways as players.” (link)

USOPC Chief of Paralympic Sport Julie Dussliere joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the alliance between the USOPC and the NCAA, which includes hosting Paralympic events at NCAA championship sites, how athletic administrators can best support and promote Paralympic sports and Paralympic athletes on campus, what sports the USOPC and NCAA might soon be collaborating on, and lots more. Dussliere says the USOPC is working closely with the USTA and NCAA on integrating wheelchair tennis national championships into the NCAA championships. “Some other sports we've had great success – obviously with track and field, so we are looking to expand that a bit next year, and then potentially look at swimming, rowing, volleyball and maybe a few others down the road.” Dussliere also tells Banker opportunity continues to be a chief priority for bringing more sports to college campuses. “There are athletes out there who may not know they're eligible to be a paralympic athlete or they could be training without the knowledge of the athletic department or the coaches. So, really just getting everyone educated on what is Paralympics sports, who's eligible for Paralympics sports, what types of disabilities there are out there, that's the key starting point for everyone.” The full Q&A is now available on Connect. Louisiana brought in $1.6M in taxes from mobile sports betting in June, up from $1.4M in June 2022, and Louisiana Gambling Control Board Chair Ronnie Johns attributes the increase to LSU’s College World Series win, adding: “I think the win ratio was actually down, so I think a lot of people were betting on LSU to win and we’re grateful that they did.” (link)

Google is testing a product that uses AI to produce news stories and is pitching it to news organizations including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. The tool, known internally by the working title Genesis, can take in information — details of current events, for example — and generate news content. The New York Times’ Benjamin Mullin and Nico Grant report that “some executives who saw Google’s pitch described it as unsettling, asking not to be identified discussing a confidential matter. Two people said it seemed to take for granted the effort that went into producing accurate and artful news stories.” Google spokeswoman Crider, however, tells the NYT: “Quite simply, these tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists have in reporting, creating and fact-checking their articles.” Instead, Google believes it can serve as a kind of personal assistant for journalists. Colorado AD Rick George reflects on 10 years of leadership in Boulder & also comments on his current contract situation: “I have less than three years left on my contract now, and I don’t see me working past that time frame in this position.” More on George’s tenure as Buffs’ Women’s Soccer HC Danny Sanchez notes key facility improvements: “We understand that things can’t happen overnight. And it’s not inexpensive to do things in Boulder. Never once did we feel the administration wasn’t supporting us. It was just a matter of the right time and the right place. We knew it would happen. But I’d be lying to you if I didn’t say the first time I drove by and saw those lights going up, you get goose bumps. It just really shows the level of commitment to spend that money out there for our student-athletes. It’s fantastic.” (link)

Liberty AD Ian McCaw joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention to chat about the process of hiring a new football coach, the move to Conference USA and the impact of the league’s TV deal with ESPN and CBS Sports Network, playing four straight weekday football games in October and more. Most notably, asked whether he believes in the idea of having a football commissioner, McCaw explains: “I'm in favor of there being an executive director of football within the NCAA structure similar to what Dan Gavitt is for men's basketball. I think that would serve the membership in the FBS extremely well if we’re able to get to that point, so hopefully we do. Football is obviously the largest enterprise in College athletics, and we need to be paying special attention to it.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. (link)

Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton on the introduction of The Flock collective designed by an outside group to raise NIL monies for Mocs student-athletes: “I support the collective and that is a need, but also our number one priority is we've got a long way to go to continue to build the Mocs Club and our budgets and facilities and on and on and on. But I just feel like if I don't come out and say I support the collective — and it's a necessary deal to be able to maintain competitiveness — what I don't want is a year and a half from now, (men’s basketball HC) Dan Earl has a losing season, (women’s basketball HC Shawn) Poppie has a losing season and (football HC) Rusty (Wright) has a losing season and people are saying, 'Well, three years ago you were great. That was a charade.' But this is what we need to compete on that same level. In basketball, two-thirds of the conference is doing that, and we've got to find a way in, so that's where my role and job is, to educate and then support people giving.” The Flock is aiming to raise $325K. Florida A&M’s football program has been temporarily suspended after a rap music video was released by Real Boston Richey with a portion of the video shot from within the Rattlers locker room without permission. FAMU HC Willie Simmons calls graphic language used in the video “not consistent with Florida A&M's core values, principles and beliefs.” Real Boston Richey donned a Rattlers helmet in the video, plus some student-athletes appear in the background. More from Simmons: “It's FAMU, it's our brand, it's our facility. Kids are going to be kids, but I am also trying to help them understand to be super mindful of your involvement and decisions. We will make a determination to address those (involved) individually or the entire team.” An investigation has been launched into the situation. (link); Here’s the full letter from Simmons. (link)

Florida Atlantic raised $15.3M and gained 503 new donors in FY23, more than doubling the previous year’s fundraising efforts. SBJ’s John Ourand reports the “strategic partners” Disney CEO Bob Iger noted the company may seek out for ESPN may come from private equity. Ourand says his sources are “pessimistic” about tech firms, such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Netflix partnering with ESPN, and also expressed skepticism about potential partnerships with Fanatics and Electronic Arts. “The most popular answer centered on private equity investors like KKR, Apollo or Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed media company run by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs. By going the private equity route, Iger would have cover to manage the business more aggressively and move more quickly into sports gaming and streaming. This would let Iger take ESPN’s financials—which are likely to be hampered by the continued shrinking of the cable bundle — off Disney’s balance sheet, while also allowing him to keep his hand in the sports business.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Mike Rooney breaks down the pros and cons of a 72-team tournament with 32 initial hosts, noting first that the model “converts our current regional weekend into two weekends in which everyone is playing a three-game series.” While there are some negatives – Rooney points out the current postseason format is “going splendidly” – he concludes there are too many positives to ignore. For one, expanding to 72 teams would still include just 24% of all DI programs. For comparison, the NFL (44%), NBA (53%) and MLB (40%) all include far higher percentages. Furthermore, at least in the case of last season, expanding to 72 would help address some of the issues many had with the RPI as the eight additional teams would have come from six different conferences. Other pros: Thursday night play-in games that “could be a blast,” alleviating the postseason asks of pitching staffs, more TV money, and more investment by adding more hosts. Rooney on the latter: “This is arguably the most impactful change we will discuss. If you want to get your athletic department and community energized around college baseball, bring them to the postseason. … If we want the Big Ten to continue to grow its investment in college baseball, and we absolutely do, [its lack of hosting in recent years] isn’t great.” Lots more.
