Executives with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and members of the Memphis City Council have reportedly discussed preliminary plans to renovate FedExForum, which is also home to Memphis men’s hoops. Upgrades could cost at least $350M and involve inverting the number of seats in the lower bowl to allow for more premium seating options. (link)

+ Former South Carolina State WBB HC Smith filed a lawsuit in March accusing the school and former AD Danley of breach of contract, defamation and negligent hiring and retention, among other complaints. Documents show the state’s Insurance Reserve Fund gave Smith a $250K payout last month. The school’s statement: “The matter has been amicably resolved between the parties. Pittsburgh FB HC Narduzzi gives a public thank you to UTEP MBB HC Golding for picking up three Panthers FB student-athletes who, like the Goldings, were stranded in Dallas due to airline travel issues and driving them the nine hours to El Paso to join the rest of the team in bowl prep. Narduzzi: “He, his wife and child picked up our three guys and drove them to get them here for practice. … Just want to give a shout out to them. It goes back to the hospitality... Like Pittsburgh FB - and I’m sure many of your in-season programs - San Diego State MBB has had trouble getting student-athletes back to campus with the ongoing travel industry challenges. Junior wing Parrish had to endure three planes & four cities over 12 hours (Detroit-DC-Atlanta-San Diego) to get back in town & forward Arop was finally due into Las Vegas last night after a series of issues heading back from Omaha. Verdict is still out on if he’ll get on the Vegas-to-SD flight Wednesday or if a SDSU staffer will drive over and back to bring him to campus. The Aztecs open Mountain West play tomorrow night by hosting Air Force. (link); As of 10PM ET last night, Southwest was up to 2,746 cancellations for today & another 2,475 for tomorrow. (link)

With uncertainties ranging from a looming recession to what’s next for crypto, SBJ’s Lefton observes that 2023 “looks somewhere between unsettled and scary” to those in the sports marketing industry. Lefton submits that CBD and sports betting companies are on deck to fill the void being left by crypto’s burst in sponsorship spending in 2022, and IEG Global Managing Director Laatz notes: “FTX left a cloud on the industry, covered up some problems and made every category pay more. Many traditional sponsors had already reached the point where they were saying, ‘Can we live without most of this?’ And they were already concerned about clutter even before all those patches came on the market." Meanwhile, electric vehicles and NIL, Lefton believes, could serve as new opportunities for brands, but neither category is “ripe” yet. On NIL specifically, The Marketing Arm VP for Sports Wojcik explains: “Brands are a bit lukewarm, because it is still such a Wild West. They have to realize these are athletes, not content creators, so unlike influencers per se, in most cases you’re going to have to create content they can fit into." More from Lefton. (link)

Despite the Federal Reserve raising interest rates for the seventh time this year and forecasting that 2023 will bring further rate hikes and growing unemployment, SBJ’s Smith reports there are “generally few concerns among experts that those negative macro trends have begun to or will likely have a significant effect on the sports industry as it heads into 2023.” Fitch Ratings Sports Sector Director Flynn anticipates only moderate concerns for operating costs and consumer spending and tells SBJ: “We always monitor the renewal rates for our credits. If the regular sponsorship renewals are coming in at a decline, that could be a concern. But at the end of the day, a big driver is really media for the financial stability of the leagues. As long as your media is stable and locked in for a long term, then you’ll have financially healthy leagues.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Phillips touts the league’s thriving Olympic sport enterprise, telling the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Teel that the conference can further market its entire Olympic sport portfolio through the ACC Network, ESPN and corporate partners: “There’s a residual that comes over time. It may not be instantly, but as we look forward to revenue generation, this is another way.” Competitive balance is key, with eight different schools winning or sharing the ACC’s seven fall season championships. Overall, the ACC boasted a DI-best three NCAA titles and two additional championship finalists, which Teel posits “dulls the sting of missing the CFP for a second consecutive year.” Phillips: Olympic sports success is “an incredible point of pride for the league and it’s a testament to our schools that offer these amazing broad-based programs, as well as the support, resources, the coaches that they’re hiring and the student-athletes that they’re attracting.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Swarbrick camps with Fighting Irish alums Golic Jr. and Golic Sr. to discuss key industry issues. On NIL: “We never anticipated coming into effect with no regulation, no oversight. And so what we've got now has nothing to do with name, image and likeness. Quite literally, it's what used to be under the table payments and you now call them NIL, and you not only pay it, but you celebrate it.” On where the solution for NIL will come, Swarbrick hopes new NCAA President Baker can provide some unified leadership for the industry. When will that happen? Swarbrick believes there will be a “trigger event” such as the NLRB ruling at USC or the Johnson case “that finally causes the realization we have to do something to solve this.” More from Swarbrick: “I don't think football will come under the governance of the NCAA any more than it is today. I think there are a host of reasons for that, but I think the major conferences will continue to run football as a practical matter. But anything that happens in football is not happening in isolation, it has Title IX implications, it has implications for the academic model so we have to have the NCAA involved. And they are the likely spokesperson, if we can support our new president and put him in a position to do that. … I think we're in a better position with regard to [college football playoff access] than we have ever been. So I feel great about both the value of independence, and our ability to remain independent right now.” (link)

Inforum’s McFeely digs into the final NCAA Simple Rating System ranking provided to the Division I Football Championship Committee on November 20, deeming the process for establishing the playoff field “subjective, just as it’s always been.” The top eight teams in the SRS were Sacramento State, South Dakota State, William & Mary, Samford, Holy Cross, Jackson State, Weber State and North Dakota State, compared to the playoff committee seeds SDSU, Sac State, NDSU, Montana State, W&M, Samford, Incarnate Word and Holy Cross. More from the apex of humanity as the Tampa Bay Times’ Baker provides an update on the Cheez-It hotel room, which will house a select few players during the Cheez-It and Citrus bowls in Orlando. “Players will be able to wear Cheez-It slippers and Cheez-It robes as they walk across a Cheez-It rug to turn off a Cheez-It lamp (with red and yellow mood lighting) before snuggling up under a Cheez-It blanket, pulling a Cheez-It sleep mask over their eyes and resting their head on a Cheez-It pillow. ESPN reports that for the 31st consecutive year it has held the top spot for men aged 18-34 and 18-49. 2022 also marks the 13th straight year the network finished No. 1 among people 18-34 and 18-49. Additionally, ESPN is the No. 1 cable network in primetime among all key adult demos (P18-34, P18-49, P25-54) for the ninth straight year. The Worldwide Leader also reports that it accounts for the largest share of total sports minutes consumed of any nationally measured network (broadcast or cable) YTD (thru 12/13/22) among total viewers (20%) and adults 18-49 (22.5%). Finally, ESPN2 has been the No. 2 cable sports network among men 18-34 every year (once tied) since its 1993 launch, trailing only ESPN. (link)

How bad was holiday travel? Well it depends on what airline. Per FlightAware, Southwest had 42% of its Christmas Day flights canceled and another 64% canceled today, with Southwest, Spirit, Delta and Alaska Airlines having at least 20% of their holiday flights canceled. On the delay side, 52% of JetBlue flights were pushed back with Southwest, United, Spirit and Alaska Airlines all having over 35% of flights delayed. (link, link)

The Financial Times’ Olcott and Storbeck detail the tension behind the scenes at Adidas, a “company in crisis” under outgoing boss Rørsted, with shares dropping 54% in a year, the gap between Adidas, Nike and Puma widening post-pandemic and staff turnover attributed to Rørsted’s “authoritarian” management style. The fallout from ending the brand’s partnership with Ye over his anti-Semitic remarks will erase half of its 2022 earnings, reflecting on its over-reliance on the line as it contributed 7% of the group total. Per one analyst: “They did not give us enough of an indication of how big it was and how important it was to growth. Probably, they didn’t want to highlight how reliant they’ve become on the brand.” Meanwhile, a former manager notes: “Things with Ye were bad already for a long time. He was constantly misbehaving— changing his mind, postponing projects, not respecting Adidas timelines.” Incoming CEO Gulden will be charged with executing a culture reset, with Deutsche Bank analyst Cochrane concluding: “The whole company, the belief in what they’re doing and what they’re selling, needs to be reinvigorated.” (link)

CNBC’s Sherman catches up with several media executives to get their predictions for 2023, starting with how things will unfold for Netflix. Two execs tell Sherman they believe the company will merge, with one predicting a Netflix-Paramount Global partnership and the other prognosticating Disney will join the streaming giant. Another exec predicts Disney CEO Iger, rather than naming a successor, will extend his contract beyond December 31, 2024, his current end date, and stay as Disney CEO for years to come. Meanwhile, the cost of sports rights will peak, according to another executive, who believes it’s possible that traditional pay TV will be completely eliminated in the next five to seven years. Sherman: “That will lead to an environment where there are fewer bidders for sports rights, dropping the price for sports across the board, said this executive. Perhaps the NFL remains an outlier due to its popularity, said the executive. But every other sport’s prospects look bleak, said the person.” Finally, TikTok may be banned in the U.S., following increasing concerns that it’s a security risk and subsequent bipartisan legislation recently introduced by U.S. Senator Rubio (R-FL). One executive tells Sherman that even without a congressional ban, Apple may well ban future TikTok downloads from its App Store given the privacy concerns. More from Sherman. (link)
