Babson elevates AD Lynch to Assoc. VP for Athletics and Athletics Advancement. Virginia Wesleyan will add Men’s VB in the spring of 2024 as the Marlins’ 23rd sport program. AD Hoover-Erbig: "Virginia Wesleyan has a long and distinguished record of success in women's volleyball and we have every confidence that this will translate into our new men's program. Our beautiful campus, outstanding facilities, strong academic programs, and terrific location make this addition a logical next step for athletics." Attorney Heitner writes on the NCAA’s Enforcement Division personnel progress: “With very little fanfare, the NCAA has recently started to spruce up its enforcement division. What specifically caught my eye was the hiring of Craig Moringiello in August, who now serves as the Assistant Director of Enforcement at the NCAA. He has an interesting background. Prior to becoming employed by the NCAA, Moringiello was an FBI executive leader with 20 years of federal experience in cybersecurity, counterintelligence, and strategic communications. Before his latest stint at the FBI, he was a Deputy Group Chief at the CIA. That's all to say that the NCAA hired no slouch. It is hard to believe that the NCAA would retain such an individual and that a person like Moringiello would be interested in the job for no reason at all. While I possess no hard evidence as to whether the NCAA will finally attempt to enforce its NIL rules (which may lead to litigation in response), it seems like the Association is gearing up for at least one enforcement action. Otherwise, I would be hard-pressed to understand why it would hire someone with the statute of Moringiello as well as why he would want the position.” (link)

The NFL “increasingly sees flag football as good for business,” according to The Athletic’s Kaplan, who notes the new flag format for the Pro Bowl is one more way to shed light on it. NFL EVP for FB Operations Vincent: “Flag is played by 20 million people in more than 100 countries. This is important to note, this is just not about this investment, the time spent. This is not about being an emerging sport, to participate in the L.A. 2028 (Summer Olympics) games. This is about changing the way people see and feel about the game of football, and where everyone can experience the values of the game. So this goes far beyond that, this is the future of the sport of football, where everyone can participate and enjoy the values that myself, my colleagues, my children that we learned through the sport.” Vincent also notes the NFL has been in “constant communication” with the NCAA about making female flag football a sanctioned sport, something that has already happened in NAIA. For the past two years, NAIA recruiters have attended a flag showcase hosted by the Atlanta Falcons, and Falcons Director of Community Relations Dinkel says: “We know that if girls grow and develop within the sport of football, they’ll become fans. And they’ll be more comfortable with their kids playing at a later date.” More. (link)

Despite the Federal Reserve raising interest rates for the seventh time this year and forecasting that 2023 will bring further rate hikes and growing unemployment, SBJ’s Smith reports there are “generally few concerns among experts that those negative macro trends have begun to or will likely have a significant effect on the sports industry as it heads into 2023.” Fitch Ratings Sports Sector Director Flynn anticipates only moderate concerns for operating costs and consumer spending and tells SBJ: “We always monitor the renewal rates for our credits. If the regular sponsorship renewals are coming in at a decline, that could be a concern. But at the end of the day, a big driver is really media for the financial stability of the leagues. As long as your media is stable and locked in for a long term, then you’ll have financially healthy leagues.” (link)

ESPN reports that for the 31st consecutive year it has held the top spot for men aged 18-34 and 18-49. 2022 also marks the 13th straight year the network finished No. 1 among people 18-34 and 18-49. Additionally, ESPN is the No. 1 cable network in primetime among all key adult demos (P18-34, P18-49, P25-54) for the ninth straight year. The Worldwide Leader also reports that it accounts for the largest share of total sports minutes consumed of any nationally measured network (broadcast or cable) YTD (thru 12/13/22) among total viewers (20%) and adults 18-49 (22.5%). Finally, ESPN2 has been the No. 2 cable sports network among men 18-34 every year (once tied) since its 1993 launch, trailing only ESPN. (link)

The Financial Times’ Olcott and Storbeck detail the tension behind the scenes at Adidas, a “company in crisis” under outgoing boss Rørsted, with shares dropping 54% in a year, the gap between Adidas, Nike and Puma widening post-pandemic and staff turnover attributed to Rørsted’s “authoritarian” management style. The fallout from ending the brand’s partnership with Ye over his anti-Semitic remarks will erase half of its 2022 earnings, reflecting on its over-reliance on the line as it contributed 7% of the group total. Per one analyst: “They did not give us enough of an indication of how big it was and how important it was to growth. Probably, they didn’t want to highlight how reliant they’ve become on the brand.” Meanwhile, a former manager notes: “Things with Ye were bad already for a long time. He was constantly misbehaving— changing his mind, postponing projects, not respecting Adidas timelines.” Incoming CEO Gulden will be charged with executing a culture reset, with Deutsche Bank analyst Cochrane concluding: “The whole company, the belief in what they’re doing and what they’re selling, needs to be reinvigorated.” (link)
