Realignment Rumblings: “They’re Back”
+ It’s official: Colorado will join the Big 12 beginning with the 2024-25 academic year. CU Chancellor Philip DiStefano and Buffs AD Rick George, in part: “After careful thought and consideration, it was determined that a switch in conference would give CU Boulder the stability, resources, and exposure necessary for long-term future success in a college athletics environment that is constantly evolving. The Big 12's national reach across three time zones as well as our shared creative vision for the future we feel makes it an excellent fit for CU Boulder, our students, faculty, and alumni. These decisions are never easy and we've valued our 12 years as proud members of the Pac-12 Conference.” (link)
+ The Pac-12 responds, says it will “embrace expansion opportunities” as soon as its media deal is done. (link)
+ Per The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, George “deflect[ed]” a question regarding whether he ever saw a Pac-12 TV deal and “answer[ed] with a line he keeps using about the importance of time slots.” Mandel adds: “The CU brass came in with clear talking points. Every question comes back to the same answer – that the exposure and time slots from the Big 12's TV partners benefit their athletes. Whatever the last update they got/didn't get on the Pac-12 TV deal clearly wasn't reassuring.” Meanwhile, DiStefano noted a driving factor in CU’s original decision to join the Pac-12 was the school’s Southern California alumni base, but now USC and UCLA have left. More from Mandel. (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel observes CU never waited to see what the Pac-12’s TV deal would be. “University presidents are risk-averse creatures. They are not people that take risks. It would make perfect fiscal sense to see what Deal A is, see what Deal B is, and then make a choice. … They were so frustrated they decided to leave. And I think that’s a really important point.” (link)
+ The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports the Big 12 will add between one and three schools to join the Buffs in 2024-25. “The league will first seek other Pac-12 members to join, and if none do so, the Big 12 would add a Group of Five school to reach an even number of members in 2024, sources said.” Those G5 candidates include Connecticut, Memphis, San Diego State and UNLV, McMurphy adds, noting SMU is also a possibility but there’s hesitation about adding yet another Texas school. Per one source, the “dream scenario for the Big 12 would be to get the ‘Four Corner’ schools” from the Pac-12. (link)
+ Don’t sleep on Connecticut as a potential Big 12 target, per The Athletic’s Max Olson, who writes. “Here’s the thing about Yormark: What he wants to sell his members on is UConn. If Colorado is the only Pac-12 member coming in, don’t be surprised if Yormark goes all-in on UConn. All the political capital he’s gaining in the eyes of his league presidents, chancellors and ADs from pulling off this Colorado move? Conference sources believe that’s where he wants to spend it.” Olson also notes that while Big 12 leaders have their doubts about the Huskies’ football relevance, Yormark “sees an entry point into New York City. He sees a dominant basketball conference and big-time events at Madison Square Garden. He sees a future in which the Big 12 makes more money down the road by decoupling its media rights package and selling its basketball rights separately. Conference sources say he sees a sort of buy-low opportunity here, a bet that the Big 12 investing in UConn over the rest of the decade will drive up the conference’s value. For him, there’s no hesitation. There’s real conviction.” More from Olson. (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner argues the “Buffaloes can be replaced, and easily so. They have made little competitive impact and lack the brand value and media market to kneecap the Pac-12 as it negotiates a broadcast contract.” However, Wilner acknowledges CU’s “departure looks bad, especially for commissioner George Kliavkoff, and counts as yet another body blow for a conference that has taken repeated hits over the past 13 months. … Could the Buffaloes’ move back to the Big 12 undercut faith in Kliavkoff’s leadership? Seems likely. Will it cause any remaining presidents to rethink their allegiance to the conference? Seems reasonable.” Still, Wilner suspects Kliavkoff was prepared for this eventuality “and will pivot to Plan B,” but for now, if realignment is a competition between Kliavkoff and Yormark, Wilner notes “Yormark has a commanding lead.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells ESPN’s David Hale the league continues actively considering expansion opportunities but has yet to find a valuable enough option. “The ACC has been and remains highly engaged in looking at anything that makes us a better and stronger conference. We've spent considerable time on expansion to see if there is anything that fits. We have a tremendous group of institutions but if there was something that made us better, we would absolutely be open to it." Phillips also explains that “revenue generation continues to be a priority, but this league is third right now in revenue as we go forward into wherever the next TV deals are for other conferences where, we've looked at it. We've had multiple TV consultants. Third is certainly a good position, but we want to gain and gain traction financially in order to close the gap with the SEC and the Big Ten." (link)

Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer catches up with Missouri Valley Commissioner Jeff Jackson at the 2023 NACDA Convention to Q&A about Jackson’s priorities as a commissioner, what’s been the biggest surprise since taking the position, his perspective on NIL and more, including the growth of women’s sports, about which Jackson remarks: “I think right now one of the things that has occurred that I think everybody's embracing is the importance of women sports not only from a social vantage point, but I also think we're seeing it from very positive economic vantage point. And those two things do need to be there. it's nice if it's good socially and kind of gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling, but now when you start getting to the point where you can see tangible improvement in terms of what's going on in that genre, that really bodes well not only for what’s going to occur for them today, but what’s going to occur in the future.” Full conversation on Connect. Dayton AD Neil Sullivan talks about scheduling for the Flyers’ men’s hoops team, which will play Ohio State in a previously announced exhibition game, as well as Cincinnati and Northwestern in the regular season. Sullivan: “I think anymore you’ve got to be a little bit creative in scheduling, and we put enough feelers out and have enough conversations with neutral site games. It’s tough to get a home-and-home with [Cincinnati], which is just a reality. So you’ve got to do the next best thing.” Sullivan goes on to say that scheduling overall gets harder each season, but he continues to approach schools who have declined previous overtures. “At some point, they’ve got to play people too, right? It’s 365 days a year of trying to get the right feelers out there, and what we’re after is home-and-homes and neutral games against NCAA at-large contending teams. That’s the bottom line.” (link)

+ The NBA yesterday laid off dozens of employees “as part of an increasing emphasis on its burgeoning areas of growth, such as its digital and international business,” SBJ’s Tom Friend reports. NBA Chief Communications Officer Mike Bass tells Friend: “We are reallocating resources to our priority business areas, including digital and international growth, and that has resulted in the elimination of a number of positions at the league office.” Friend adds: “Sources said the layoffs were from departments not focused on revenue generation and that, as of now, they do not expect the league to eliminate any other positions. The sources said the layoffs were more from ‘the service parts’’ of the organization.” (link)

Now live on Connect: D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle is joined by Clemson IPTAY COO Brad Brown at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss how the organization added 3,700 new donors and raised $41M last year, how IPTAY uses technology to identify new donors, what IPTAY has planned for the future and more. Brown notes that “technology is a force multiplier for us. I use the slogan ‘Data drives decisions’ and how best can we collect, aggregate, synthesize that data and give us a really clear snapshot to make decisions? That could be real-time decisions for our fundraisers, could be decisions for our boards or our leaders, and so data is extremely important. We're looking at in-house solutions, certainly third-party solutions, maybe a mix or hybrid thereof, but data is going to be king.” Lots more. (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander catches up with several men’s basketball HCs to gauge their level of burnout in the current environment, and Auburn HC Bruce Pearl observes: "I'm very concerned about our younger coaches. I'm concerned about them as dads not seeing their kids in-season, and when the season's over, their wives are expecting to surely see your son play baseball, or your daughter play softball, or see a play. But no. We're talking about marriages and kids. This has been the conversation." Baylor HC Scott Drew adds: "If we don't change some things, we're going to lose some coaches. If I was 25 and I was in this profession now and an ops guy, I would say there's no way I'm grinding my way through this profession. I'm doing something else, unless the rules would change." Former Cincinnati Men’s Basketball Chief of Staff Chris LePore, who officially left the sport last month, tells Norlander: “For me, it was about having more time for my kids, having more time for my family.” At 31, LePore has three children under six and decided the time it would take to become a head coach wasn’t worth the grind in today’s conditions. Now in a new profession, LePore also remarks that the concept of PTO blew his mind. Lots more. (link)

The Athletic’s Brendan Marks takes a look at the increasing number of boys high school basketball student-athletes who are reclassifying to enter college a year early. Baylor Men’s Hoops HC Scott Drew notes: “I mean, a 15-year-old today looks different than a 15-year-old 20 years ago.” From there, the wisdom of reclassifying can come down to a player’s motivation, as Alabama HC Nate Oats explains: “If you’re trying to get drafted in the NBA the sooner you get to college to start the one year you have to be there, the better off it is for you. If you’re a legitimate NBA prospect.” Oats goes on to note that “kids who have a legitimate chance to go pro aren’t looking to have the best college career they possibly can; they’re looking to put themselves in position to get drafted as soon as possible. If a kid is just looking to have the best possible college career that he can, he should wait to go to college — like back in the day when top kids would do eighth grade twice. Then they’re grown men in college.” (link)

The U.S. GDP grew at a 2.4% rate during Q2, up from a 2% rate during Q1. The New York Times’ Ben Casselman notes that “buoyant consumer spending and resurgent business investment helped, once again, to keep a recession at bay.” (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ Pac-12 leaders are meeting today presumably to discuss what appears to be Colorado’s impending departure, and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger submits that the league “can prevent a domino effect from unfurling if (1) it finally presents to members a suitable television contract, and (2) it expands back to at least 10, if not more.” However, Dellenger notes that “many within the industry continue to express doubt that a television deal will be good enough to prevent further departures.” For instance, one administrator asks: “If there is a deal better than the Big 12, why wouldn’t it have been put on the table already?” CU’s decision – if it comes to fruition, would be a “loud and obvious sign: confidence in a deal is low. Impatience among other members is growing and there’s a good explanation as to why,” Dellenger continues, adding: “Without a presented deal next week, the expectation is that more programs will share in the opinion of Colorado.” As it relates to further Big 12 expansion, Dellenger reports Yormark has targeted Connecticut, but the preference is to add a Power 5 program closer to the geographic footprint. “While Arizona has long been thought as a more real possibility to leave, conversations between the Wildcats and the Big 12 have slowed to a crawl this summer, or outright stopped.” Whether they resume, according to one source, depends on the TV deal. More from Dellenger. (link)
+ JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor reports that one Pac-12 CEO says today’s meeting will include a discussion about the opportunity to “trade up” through expansion given Colorado's decision. As far as what “trading up” means, Canzano asks: “Is a 12-member Pac-12 conference that includes Colorado State, San Diego State and SMU stronger than a 10-school conference that includes Colorado?” As it stands now, Canzano doesn’t “see Oregon and Washington as flight risks. The Ducks and Huskies covet access to the College Football Playoff, above all. They have that access right where they are.” (link)
+ In the event Connecticut were to leave the Big East, The Athletic’s Dana O’Neill advises against a reactionary expansion. “Loyola Chicago’s stutter move to the Atlantic 10, I’d imagine, gives everyone pause. The jump up in competition isn’t easy. Dayton and Saint Louis are viable options, for example, but which can be immediately Big East ready? I’d argue Dayton more, but how does Xavier feel about that? Gonzaga remains a really tricky, if not geographically impossible, pipe dream. … While everyone else chases their tails and reinvents their identities on the fly, the Big East’s success is based on selectivity and knowing what it is.” (link)

Following yesterday’s NIL working group meeting in Indianapolis, AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco explains his belief that the NCAA should concentrate on the big picture. “The collectives are here – fine. You can’t necessarily limit what someone is going to pay as long as there is a quid-pro-quo. I wouldn’t worry about that. Let’s root out the basic abuses. This thing will eventually settle down, in all likelihood. I don’t think you have to micromanage it. You need certain levels of disclosure. Focus on the big stuff that is obvious – and that is it.” He adds: “If you have a level of transparency and there is a quid-pro-quo, and – it’s a free country – if a car dealership wants to pay $200K or $300K, Ok, you may say, ‘That’s really just paying a player. What’s that player’s real worth?’ The other thing you could do is have companies that analyze fair market value argue what’s fair market value. But, boy, you get into really a thicket of problems there. Because who is to determine what fair market value is for you or for me? The nuances there are not easy to deal with.” Ultimately, Aresco believes the various forms NIL takes make it difficult to come up with a uniform contract. “I’d have to be shown how that could really work.” (link)

Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod Q&As with The Athletic’s Chris Vannini about conference expansion, playing midweek football games, inking media rights deal with ESPN and more. MacLeod says there are no imminent plans for expansion, but “ideally we’d rather be at 12, probably. But we’ll make those decisions along the way. … We don’t feel like it’s a rushed situation, but we’ll continue to be diligent and see what might work for us.” Should a recommendation to increase the transition fee from FCS to FBS to $5M pass, MacLeod believes it won’t prove cost-prohibitive but wonders whether it would be more prudent to enact a more modest increase and allow schools to invest that money into their programs. On returning to ESPN and playing midweek games, MacLeod notes: “I give a ton of credit to our coaches. They bought in early and understood that for us to get the exposure we need, that was part of it. They’re embracing the opportunity to be the only game on TV so we can educate not only our own fans about their new opponents but fans across the country how exciting the brand of football we play is. It’s different, but it’s a chance for campuses to come together and do something special.” (link)

Jackson State is putting together a package to retain AD Ashley Robinson which includes an increased salary and a higher operating budget, according to CollegeAD. Robinson, who currently earns $230K per year, has family in Texas, which CollegeAD reports is a chief consideration as he mulls an offer from Prairie View A&M. If Robinson leaves JSU before July 30, 2024, he would owe the school two years’ base salary. (link)

Minnesota Football HC P.J. Fleck calls allegations of a toxic culture within the program “baseless” and adds: “This is a similar story that gets peddled every single year, and the majority of the players have been dismissed or removed from our football team. … We do not use physical activity to discipline our players at the University of Minnesota, and we have never done that. Our players do things like, they wake up early and clean the weight room. Whatever you did, you watch a video on that. If you were late to class, you watch a video on tardiness. You then write your professor a letter. Those are the disciplines we actually have within our program.” Fleck also maintains the “Fleck Bank” is more metaphorical in nature and was used in 2017 and 2018 to illustrate how the more players invest in the program, the more they’ll get out of it. He adds that no coins or currency existed or were exchanged. Additionally, Fleck says there are roughly six ways for players to report any problems, and “to this date, there have been zero claims on this issue. Zero.” (link)
